Smokey had a looong career in music...performing AND writing! He's had hits with the Miracles (of course), the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and the list goes on forever! He was a very important part of the Motown rise as a musical powerhouse! The women especially loved him from the early 60's and even now! The man was a phenom! This song is from 1979. For a "history lesson", you should hear his very early hit, "Shop Around" that was at the start of his career and Motown's success in 1960-1 when he was 20. In those early years, he wrote classic hits for himself and other Motown artists and became Berry Gordy's "right-hand man". The two are still best friends who appear on special shows together to share stories about Motown.

I was reading about Smokey's background and he's like a walking UN. "Robinson's ancestry is also part Nigerian, Scandinavian, Portuguese, and Cherokee." This is besides being part French on his mother's side. He got the name Smokey from his favorite uncle because he loved going to cowboy movies as a kid and his uncle used to call him Smokey Joe. It later got shortened to Smokey. Smokey was one of Motown's top songwriters, writing not only his own hits but also big hits for other artists. He wrote top hits like: My Guy, The Way You Do The Things You Do, My Girl, I'll Be Doggone and Aint That Peculiar. This was his first time meeting Berry Gordy: "In August 1957, Robinson and the Miracles met songwriter Berry Gordy after a failed audition for Brunswick Records. At that time during the audition, Robinson had brought along with him a "Big 10" notebook with 100 songs he wrote while in high school. Gordy was impressed with Robinson's vocals and even more impressed with Robinson's ambitious songwriting."

Some radio stations still have a Quiet Storm show today. A year or 2 ago, Smokey released a duet with Charlie Wilson (Gap Band) called "All Of My Love".I don't know if he still has the company, but Smokey had some frozen creole dinners in stores years ago. Patti LaBelle, Bobby Brown, & the late Linda McCartney have food products too. Check out these tribute songs: George Harrison - Pure Smokey / ABC - When Smokey Sings

I saw Smokey Robinson perform in Atlantic City, a dinner theater type show. He sang his hits with the Miracles, his solo hits, and hits he wrote for other artists. For most of the songs he would explain how he came to write it before singing it. At over three hours in I had to leave because my date had to use the bathroom and the rules were if you left the hotel ballroom you couldn't return. That was over a decade ago. For all I know Smokey might still be there singing.

This song was Smokey Robinson's first Top 10 r&b crossover hit of the 1980s. The song did peaked at the #4 spot on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Soul charts in the early winter of 1980. Some people considered this song a "quiet storm" song of the 1980s as well. A beautiful song indeed!!!

I love this song so much. Me and my husband have cruised together for 42 years and I would not change anything. I was 16 and he was 18 when we got married everyone said we didn't know what we were getting into but they were all wrong

Taking nothing away from the great Smokey Robinson, but there's a good cover of this song with absolutely amazing harmonizing by the real singer between the two who did it. Huey Lewis & Gwynneth Paltrow starred in & did that cover of Cruisin' for the 2000 movie 'Duets' - put it back on the charts again! In fact, Huey Lewis & the News went back and recorded an entire album of oldies from the 50s & 60s; worth checking out.

This song is smooth and was released in 1979! Smokey Robinson is a legend who still performs! Since his days at Motown where he performed with the Miracles and wrote so many songs for them and other artists at Motown! He is a musical icon!❤❤

Can't go wrong with Smokey. One of a kind. One of the original Motown artist. He helped get the Temptations going. He and one of his Miracles Ronald White, wrote the Temps hit, "My Girl".

This reminds me of my old neighborhood, growing up. Summer days on school vacay, playing with your friends. This song wafting in the air in the distance from someone’s car stereo on Summer evenings. Good times, for sure. Miss those days SO much! Years later, I got a chance to meet him and get his autograph. I can tell you, he is as smooth in person as he is on wax. ❤️

The movie duets has Gweneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis doing a duet of this song. I rarely like a cover song. They knock it out the park even on your own time you should go and listen to that. Thanks guys.

This song came out much later in his career. I was already a huge Motown fanatic, when I heard this on the radio I went out and bought the single that same day. If honey could sing it would sound like Smokey Robinson. There's a great single called "when Smokey sings" that you guys should definitely check out see how his musical peers think of him

Without looking it up, I believe the band ABC did the song "When Smokey Sings." I wouldn't call them his peers because of the decades between them as well as the fact that Smokey Robinson has few peers at all. One of the best songwriters of all time. In fact, Bob Dylan famously called Smokey Robinson "America's greatest living poet." The highest praise!
