Every time I played the game I romanced Naoto, skrew Kanji he is too slow, even in battle his turn is last and his hit/evade is garbage.
While Naoto is probably still number one, Kanji makes it a tough decision. Kanji is definitely a very good waifu. Can never go wrong with picking Kanji.
Kanji will always be my favorite persona teammate. As someone who in his youth really questioned his sexuality and was confused a lot, it really hit home for me. I always though he was bi though. Because he was still super attracted to naoto after finding out she was a female

I think less of Kanji as gay, and more or less bisexual and genuinely fearful of being bullied. Keeping a harsh façade outwardly so others do not bully his more sensitive self. He's clearly not sexually motivated, nor does he just fantasize men. When it comes to characters like Naoto; Naoto has a focus and a desire to not only help others, but prove themselves among their peers. An admirable trait that they both have but take different paths to achieve. He adores strength, determination, and the will to act without hesitation.
His flair for the "effeminate" is not a trade taken lightly. Tailoring, knitting, weaving, he could easily be a strong-suited tailor or outfitter. A worry he carries but a passion he enjoys. As we all can be sensitive to the hobbies we enjoy being scrutinized.
Kanji is the type of male friend i'd love to have irl.
He's not just my favorite persona character, but one of my favorite video game characters in general.

I relate to kanji very much.
When I was little, I was constantly called gay by many for the same reasons as Kanji. While he coped with it by being a brute, I coped in my own introverted way of reclusing myself and watching manly shows and playing manly games in the vain hopes of getting approved by someone, just like Kanji.
It was only recently that I've manned up and faced my shadow as well. In other words, I'm openly gay to everyone now! Laugh all they want but nothing is manlier than accepting who you really are!

You might've missed the point, bud.
The whole point is that Kanji ISN'T gay, but was being labeled that by outsiders. It took his senpai setting him straight to realize that it didn't matter what others thought of his profession (the cause of all the gay accusations). That's why when Yu returns after a year, Kanji has embraced his profession and is comfortable in his own skin. He didn't go "yeah, guess they were right about me!" He did the total opposite and ignored them. His shadow wasn't proof that he was gay deep down. Rather it was a manifestation of his fear that he was what they labeled him to be, and his desire to simply give up and accept it. Kanji ultimately chose to reject it, even going so far as to literally beat the snot out of his own shadow.
If you're gay, then whatever, that's your prerogative and I'm not here to congratulate or to berate you either way. Just pointing out that you completely missed the point of Kanji's character arc.

Kanji isn't gay, he was just scared about being open with who he actually was because he had trauma of being thought of poorly due to what his hobbies were. In his SL, it even shows that he took things the wrong way. Now, for the whole Naoto thing, I have no comment other than he potentially is just fixated on Naoto and/or thought she was a girl at first while she was in her masculine phase.

Hes not gay but hes incredibly afraid of being perceived as gay. I think he’s questioning at best. Out of everyone besides teddie he’s the most open with his sexuality after accepting himself. I think the fandom really wants him to be gay but really him struggling with being a more feminine man is the joke. But the answer at the end of the day is that it doesn’t matter.

Kanji is great. He's the only one who understands that there is no point in trying to stop someone from denying their shadow. That they need to go through this in order to understand and accept their repressed emotions and feelings, otherwise it won't be genuine. He's not the smartest, but he's the most understanding. (and stop calling him gay, the game is not about it at all)
Troy Baker was talking out of his ass on Kanji being gay (not the first time Baker does this kind of thing). Everyone knows Kanji has a massive, colossal crush on Naoto (as mentioned here), so at the very least he's bisexual. That said, I think his sexual orientation never being confirmed makes his character a lot more interesting. After all, Kanji's final realization on that regard is that "it doesn't matter". Also, best waifu/husbando in P4.

Said it many times before and I'll say it one last time, Kanji being gay would go completely against his entire character arc.
The entire reason he felt insecure about his sexuality was because people called him gay and such for liking and doing more feminine things than most men would do. Add his constant insistence that he was a "manly dude", it made him seem like he was compensating, when really, he was just awful at trying to prove himself otherwise (He's shown to be pretty awful at understanding subtleties)
Kanji is supposed to show that you can be more in touch with the feminine side of things and still be straight, or at most bi. It should also be noted that, while even Yosuke had a scrapped romance route, Kanji had none, leading me to think that he was never intended to be bi, and definitely not gay.
Everyone saying he's gay is pretty much falling directly in line with the idea that "doing things that are more prevalent to do as a certain gender makes you gay". I mean, people can have their headcanons and such, but this is the new Persona community... the shit you see on Twitter, man...
@@5irus I wouldn't 100% discard Kanji being gay but I agree with you. Some people just project what they want to see in those characters, just like those morons claiming that Naoto is a transgender. That would go against her character even more than Kanji being gay since her wanting to be male was how she was denying her true self. The moment she accepted her shadow was when she dropped that idea completely.
The people you mentioned are also exactly the kind of people Kanji was trying to get away from.

There is no way people really think Kanji is 100% straight. I can't say what exactly he is, but he is not straight. I'd even say pansexual because I don't think guy or girl matters to him. I absolutely love Kanji, he is the best boy of Persona 4. Personally I think Kanji would probably be considered pansexual, he loves a person no matter what their gender is. He loved Naoto when he thought she was a boy and still loves Naoto when he finds out that she is a girl. His loyalty to his friends, giving respect, and making some of the cutest toys ever are some of the many things that make Kanji so great.

Honestly, despite what the English voice actor says about Kanji, and the fact that he is gay. I honestly think its more he is a normal guy that is just into feminine things such as fashion and knitting. Not only that, but as I recall, Kanji does not have either his parents in his life, so he has no real parental figures to talk to about his issues. All and all, he is a just a young man still trying to figure out himself. He is also 15, and many just be a late bloomer when it comes to the girls. The reason why he is attracted to Naoto is not because she cross-dresses as a man, but rather because she is in a similar spot as he is. Afraid that people wont like the real him when its exposed, just as Naoto fears that her detective work would be downplayed and discredited when people find out that she is actually a girl and not actually on her merits. They both are naturally drawn to one another, because they are both trying to figure out who is the real person they want to portray, not just to the rest of society, but to their friends, and to one another.
Honestly even through everything I never saw Kanji as gay. But more accepting of his feminine side and enjoyment of female-oriented media which doesn’t make anyone gay necessarily. Which is why I think he tried so hard to be masculine and not embrace his feminine and softer nature. I think Naoto proves this idea.
To me, the Naoto part proves that he's more pansexual.

Honestly I think Kanji is either bisexual or gay considering he does show genuine attraction to girls at points. But he most definitely has some level of attraction towards men and I think thats where some of his hang ups are. Especially since he’s young and due to the setting’s homophobia its likely Kanji hasn’t figured himself out yet in regards to sexuality but wants to be accepted and not judged for gender norms or sexuality.
Also, I think maybe Kanji might be somewhat fluid in his attraction? The big ringer is Naoto who presents as a male even though she’s female. I don’t think the intention was Naoto to be transgender but that whole spectrum and Kanji’s own attraction to Naoto would confuse him. She’s a girl but presents against her own gender norm and in ways I could see Kanji liking that given his own hangups.

Kanji is AWESOME!!!! He's one of my favorite members of the Investigation Team.
Personally, I think the whole façade with his shadow being overly flamboyant is more of an allegory than anything. Either way, he wanted to be accepted by others, and that's all that mattered to him.
I relate to Kanji quite a bit because I struggled to find out why I never felt accepted; only to find out that I needed to accept myself first. It's a huge, important step in life to not only recognize your flaws, but to understand your strengths as well. Much like Kanji said after his shadow boss fight, it ain't about dudes or chicks, but rather about wanting people to appreciate you for who you are.

How the fluff did Namatame capture him ?! Is it explained in the anime ? Because in the game it is never really explained (or did I miss it ?) how he manage to :
-Make people lose conciousness without even seeing him
-Put them into a bag, carry them into his truck, and throw them into the TV without anyone ever being suspicious about the deliveryman coming back from a house with a bag that strangely have a shape like there is a body inside.

The irony is that Kanji ISN'T gay. That aspect of his shadow was his fear of being something everyone labeled him as. Because Kanji was the son of a textiles maker, he was proficient in a profession not traditionally seen as masculine. Kanji was great at making dolls as well, which is obviously something sterotypically left to women. Because of this, people began calling him gay and ridiculing him. This is what led him to adopt a tough guy image, his way of compensating. Throw his attraction to Naoto into the mix (which further confused him since he believed her to be a boy at the time), and Kanji was a powderkeg waiting to explode.
In the course of the game, he never shows any sort of sexual attraction to men, but shows plenty to women. Chie and Yukiko in their swimsuits cause him to get a nosebleed, he's very obviously got a crush on Naoto, etc. His attraction to Naoto needs a bit of explanation. Kanji subconsciously picked up on her feminine traits, which is what he found attractive. The problem arose when his conscious belief of Naoto=boy conflicted with his subconscious attraction to Naoto=girl. That's why he was so relieved when her true gender was revealed.
Kanji continued feeling uncomfortable in his own skin until his senpai finally set him straight. Yu let Kanji know that it didn't matter what others thought of him. He taught him to embrace what he was good at, and to hell with naysayers. When Yu returns after a year, Kanji has grown as a person and ditched the tough guy act, wearing glasses and dressed in a dress shirt, comfortable and self-assured.
The irony here is that even people like Troy Baker (his very own VO actor) tried to label Kanji as gay. They obviously didn't get the entire point of his story arc. They're the very people who were tormenting him in the first place.
