  • Eden rose 88. Aka Pierre de Ronsard. Climbing rose.
    This is a rose that many state has a reputation for blackspot. If blackspot is an issue for you then perhaps further investigation might be needed. That said it’s roses are so beautiful I decided to purchase another.
    For me in my garden I didn’t get blackspot until the end of October, but I know others claim early blackspot. Bred by Meilland a lovely climbing rose with the most beautiful and abundant roses when in flower. Purchased from Thompson and Morgan a company that sell a wide range of roses and plants.

    I’ve just had an Eden 88 climber delivered here in U.K. (October). Roses were on offer from Peter Beales so I expected they were getting rid of the worst specimens at the end of the year.
    It isn’t very big at all, quite puny really and it also has some rust.
    I’ve plucked off the worst and sprayed it with Sulphur Rose.
    I’m planting it in my garden when my obelisk arrives, hopefully in a couple of days.
    Question: Does anyone know why the Eden Climber is also known as both “Eden 85” and “Eden 88”?
    I’ve searched for an explanation and there’s never a detailed reason given, just “also known as…..”, created by Marie-Louise Meilland in 1976, then introduced in France by Meilland International in 1985…… so what happened in 1988? I’d like to know 🤔

      Hi. There are multiple cultivars of the Eden Rose. The original is 1985, then there is Eden 88 which is described as "a climbing rose with fully double, creamy-white flowers washed in pink on the petal edges", and there are newer ones White Eden, Pink Eden and Red Eden. I also saw Mini Eden in some nurseries.

    I would pull off those leaves, I’m sure they’re not this years! Beautiful rose nonetheless and such a classic.

      Yes I’ve pulled them off. I’m really not sure if they are this years or not. I have to say I’m leaning towards this years growth which is just so odd. They are all plucked off now and new shoots are coming through so will see in the coming months but Either way, when in bloom such awesome flowers to make up for it.

    I don't understand why they would ship a rose with leaves at all, & esp. one with so much blackspot, which they've now been kind enough to introduce into your garden. Heirloom, in the U.S., ships all their roses, potted or not, stark naked so they won't dry out in shipping. I know the UK is smaller than the US, but in shipping , Stuff Happens that can cause delays. But to ship one so badly black-spotted?? Hope it survived, I'm sure you brought it back to health!

    She'll hopefully pick up once the wearher gets better... Looks like a good root anyway.
    Im still waiting on my friend fixing my youtube settings. I hate black spot. My ice land rose gets it every year but its such a good flowering one I don't want to throw it out. Looks cold. Its freezing here too.

      Hi Smita apologies for not replying sooner. As of last year there were several places in the U.K. selling this rose. Peter beales, and Trevor White. Thompson and Morgan. But for me the one I have had best roses from is Jones the rose.

      Yes my other one is looking good although she is not in a great spot, the growth is a little sluggish now I’ve moved it into a shadier position. I’ll monitor it perhaps I will move until she has some height to reach the sun rays.

    I didn't realized Thompson sold them! I was searching for a while and finally got mine from Peter Beales, bare root, which arrived in January. How's it doing now? Lots of new growth/canes?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Susan shortly after I got this rose from T&M I got another from C K Jones. I have shown a video of the two but the one from CK Jones is maybe 3 times the size. Both are doing well now but I had to move that one I was growing in the shade as it wasn’t doing so well. I have seen many times that Eden can take a year or three to start stretching its legs. Bit mine for new roses I’m happy. All 3 are in bud or flowering which is a bonus as occasionally climbers don’t flower the first year. Best of luck with yours

      Hi there. I have 2 of these Eden roses and so far the growth has been slow. I can’t remember how long ago this video was made but I think this will be the 3rd summer this coming season. And so far the growth is slow. However you have to bear in mind the poor treatment they have both had in my garden. One was left in a part sunny position for most of one summer and it didn’t like it at all. Very little growth if any. That was mid afternoon and evening sun only. Both roses are currently potted still. The ground would be better. Great in wet weather and long lasting flowers. Repeats well. No fragrance from my nose. But a lovely flower. I’m hoping to get one in the ground next year when I have an arch.

    Hi jay, I’m seeing a trend that you’re moving away from da roses towards kordes and other breeders. I’ve bought a few DA roses after all the hype from social media but they simply don’t last longer than 2 days on the bush. The flowers are very weather sensitive. I’m in Leeds, and It’s been a couple years now since I’ve purchased these roses. And I’m disappointed with DA. Or maybe I’m being impatient. I’m seeing better health, vigour and flower power from my kordes roses. What are your thoughts on DA roses?

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Shravani. There was a time when all of the roses in my garden were from DA. It was like a presumption, if you want the finest roses, get DA. I love all roses including DA. But I started to see that there are more to roses than DA. I started to see roses being bred from elsewhere around the world that seemed to be doing particularly well with not so much credit being attached to them. Some of the DA roses I got I was a little disappointed with, the Heath, growing habit or ability to stand up to weather was a little lacking just like your experiencing. There are some fantastic DA roses that I have still in my garden and I have removed the ones doing not so well for me. I have replaced those roses with kordes or other roses. Roses breeders which seem to be hugely underrated in my humble opinion. I can’t help but think the presumption I had of DA roses i mentioned above is a little engineered that way on social media making it more of a clever marketing perception. But if you think about it logically no one rose breeder can put out the best roses consistently. I don’t care where my roses come from I just want the best. This is why I now have a mixture of award winning kordes roses aswell as DA roses and roses from other rose breeders. I don’t knock DA roses I love many of them, but I just think there’s more to roses than DA. I may talk about this is another video to make clear my thoughts. Thanks for your input it’s appreciated.

      @@Jay_Jay I know how you feel. I felt the same. I don’t care where my roses come from as long as they do well. DA roses have definitely overshadowed my judgement as a newbie , and the price tag …!! I’ve seen your journey from the beginning, and I thought I should suggest you to make a video about conveying that there ARE better roses out there quality and budget wise. Eg- timeless collection.. a gem for cut flowers, and Dickson nursery- I’m waiting for the bare root season again now. :) thanks tc

    That‘s a lovely rose, we call it Eden rose 85 here in Germany. I got three of them, one is a mini Eden rose climber. They are an eye catcher in the garden when they bloom in summer. Your rose plant collection is increasing in numbers Jay Jay! 🐝

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gemma. Yes I agree an eye catcher. I couldn’t establish if Eden rose 85 and 88 were different roses. The roses I have received more recently were all roses I had ordered months ago. This one I ordered a few months ago at least. :)

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gemma how does your Eden’s get on with disease resistance to blackspot? Can you recall when the blackspot sets in for Eden? Thanks

    • @rosegardengems
      @rosegardengems 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jay_Jay Yes! I have them too in my Eden rose and some roses, they appear after summer. Most of the leaves with or with out black spots fall down into the ground beginning fall until winter, I just gather them and throw in the special garbage. I once asked an owner of a plant nursery how to deal with blackspots, he said there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s in the air (spores). I don‘t see it as a problem, I am more concerned about rust( orange colour pigment on leaves) which appears in fall, I remove the leaves right away if I see them.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rosegardengems thanks Gemma yes for me it’s the same. On my Eden I didn’t get blackspot until end of October. I’m just surprised to see this one with blackspot already. It may be last years growth yes but I’d be surprised as my Eden was naked by November/ December. Even the very healthiest of my roses were naked by March.
