    Don’t wait to monetize! I think you’ll still be getting good passive income from people watching your old videos in winter. I always search for videos of roses I’m interested in buying and people place plant orders all times of the year. Besides, what else is a gardener to do in the winter besides watching garden videos? It’s the only way to get through the cold gardenless months. Monetize now!

    Yours is a prime location, really, I'm green with envy! I'm a little bit tired of roses now, you know why, but I do like your Wedding Piano. I must tell you I've "shovel-pruned" at least a dozen of roses in the last few years; some of them grow in my friends' gardens, some are fighting for survival in the local park. Congratulations on the number of your subscribers! Making videos is time-consuming and requires a lot of planning, thinking, doing research, editing etc.etc. One can't do it for ever free of charge. Just take the money and feel happy about it :-)

    Thanks for the video Jay Jay. I bought your best performer for 2023 - Sweet Honey - and it's been fantastic, 3 flushes, undamaged by the rain, no blackspot and each subsequent flush has been more delicate and 'sophisticated' than the last. A fantastic addition to the garden - Nice one!

      Hi Stu, my sweet honey hasnt done so well this year (since I moved it). But it’s a fantastic rose. I suspect it’s a strong grower and thorny so be careful :)

    Absolutely you should accept the money!!! I always wondered why utubers were so happy to reach 1000 viewers, thanks for explaining. 😊

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Kim, as far as I’m aware it’s the number of views over a thousand that a channel gets will “earn” them a payment from YT. And it’s for how long people watch the video for will dictate how much money they will get per thousand views.
      So a video with a thousand views average watch duration of 10 seconds might earn 1p say. But a 1000 views with average watch duration of 10 minutes would be more.

      Yes, I see advertisements in your videos. I’d been watching your videos as I like to watch and listen to your story telling about your roses. Why don’t you try to get monetize. I’d been seeing advertisements in your videos all the time so may as well make money out of it. I don’t mind waiting for the advertise to finish for me to watch your video. It’s your channel it’s your right whether you want to monetize or not.

    Hi, Jay Jay !
    From my own experience -learning by doing/working, reading, etc. -and also from nursery teachers, I know that the real black spot on roses is often confused with other stress symptoms. When a rose has black spot, it is also visible under the leaf, but in the case of the rose 'Summer Romance', for example, its underside is visible at minute 5:17 when the wind blows and looks clean. So, if there are no spots under the leaves, it does not mean that the plant is sick, but rather that it is under stress and shock due to a sudden drop in temperature, cold water, or that this is sometimes their way of preparing for autumn etc. I think plants also have something in common with people: they are moody and love to attract attention..
    Wish you a great September!

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there and thanks for your comment.
      The section you talk of i will take your word for it in there will be a leaf with no blackspot on the underside. However I have learnt that sometimes the blackspot on the underside can take a little while to burn through from the topside of the leaf. It’s not always simultaneous top and bottom. I have in the past left an infected rose and watched it spread only to discover a week or so later it’s not rain damage but blackspot had burnt through from the topside of the leaves to bottom, and by that time the infection is widespread on the rose. This is my experience anyway. So if I see leaves with spots on them that are black in colour, (whether black spot or something else) I usually pluck those off which stops the spread. And new leaves grow back within a short space of time.
      Also I have been in garden centres and have been told the black spots on leaves are just rain damage and not any sort of infection. (100 percent
      was blackspot). These are my experience and thoughts anyway but I’m not claiming to be a Rosario ;)

    Fantastic collection, loved the timeless purple, gabriel oak and mum in a million (i have 2 mum in a million myself) personally.
    I would monetise personally, people are used to adverts as you say. Would love to see vids on preparing for winter, i bought 12 young potted rose bushes (and planted out) this june.
    They have flowered very well on a mix of slow release fertiliser and uncle toms. But i am very unsure when to stop deadheading / when to cut back etc. And whether to bury the graft for winter. Anyway you have a new sub :)

    Hi Jay Jay, Your best rose Elizabeth is so lovely, mine is only a year old but has given me so many blooms already. Gorgeous Girl looks well, thank you so much for showing her. Porcelain Parfuma & Summer Romance, both gifts from you, thank you ! are coming into bloom again, doing great I'm really happy with their performance so far and PP is still in her original pot as I haven't decided where she is going to live yet, very impressed with that rose. I think black spot that you mentioned on some of your roses has been an issue for many people this year, it's been so wet in the UK. I'm sure most people won't know whether you have monetised your channel or not, most won't care, you do what you want to do it's your channel. I have a block on ads so I don't see them anyway, that's always an option people can use if they don't want the ads, it works for me. Thank you for the walk around your beautiful roses, lovely to see you back again.

    Greetings from Kentucky Jay Jay, my DA Poet's Wife rose is in a pot and has not done very well this summer. I had to cut it back sharply and move it into more sun. I had it in part shade. The black spot was terrible and yes, I had to stake it up. It's putting on new growth and seems to be doing better since I moved it into more sun. My local nursery had a great sale this weekend in that all roses in 3-gallon pots were just $10.00 US dollars apiece. They normally sell for $54.00 apiece. I purchased one from the Veranda Collection by Kordes. The variety is Roxanne. It's healthy and full of bright red blooms and just $10.00. Most of my DA roses are doing fair as we still are not getting any rain. At least the daily 100 degrees has ended as it was only a cooler 80 degrees today. Your Rose Elizabeth is beautiful. Pink roses are my favorite. Happy gardening from the US, James

      All the best

    I 'shovel prune' a lot! This year I am afraid that I said goodbye to Gabriel Oak (shock!). I had been hoping for a really dark David Austin (I really wanted Munstead Wood) and, for me, Gabriel Oak doesn't stand up to the old Portland Rose, Rose de Rescht. In my garden, the colour is similar, the fragrance similar but Rose de Rescht is just a much better looking plant. If I had a bigger garden, Gabriel Oak might have stayed but as it was ... I am currently considering doing the same for Empereur Charles IV (Lens) which is in its third year and is covered in blackspot again with very few flowers and twiggy sparse form. I am a firm advocate of shovel pruning.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow shovel pruning Gabriel oak! This year I thought Gabriel oak kept its deeper colour well compared to previous years. And yes I’m not a huge fan of that faded pink it can turn when it heats up. But not often that rose gets shovel pruned.
      I think digging up roses does happen in the wider audience, I’d like to give roses 2, 3 years before deciding but truth be told that doesn’t always happen. And of course the longer they stay in the ground to consider the greater chance of rose replant disease setting in.
      Best of luck with your replacement for next year :)

    Absolutely beautiful roses and you always make me laugh. Thank you ❤ Wanted to know your thoughts on companion planting salvias with roses. Tried it this year and I love their gorgeous ultraviolet color with virtually all my roses from whites to the deeper reds, magentas, apricots, and yellows. The variety that I have strategically planted was, 'Black and Blue'. I have noticed a marked improvement in the black spot too.

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s excellent news. I’m sure I mentioned before? I have some dwarf salvias and dwarf Veronica’s that do well, I will have to dig out the varieties but I know they are dwarf. I also grow nepeta the variety is cats pyjamas that doesn’t grow so tall but it spreads pretty fast and needs cutting back or separating. The bees 🐝 love it. And thanks for for lovely comment.

Have TPW rose and Sceptre D isle rose, both in 62L pots and both have several stakes for support and doing exceptionally well. The TPW rose performances much better in partial shade not in full Sun. @vintagelady1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Whoa JayJay!! Had me nervous there for a moment, thinking you had some weird thing going on with...is that The Poet's Wife? Whew. OK. Now on to the roses.
    I was thrilled to see my fave, Bro Cadfael doing well, & it looks like you are going to have a bang-up fall flush, with all those buds on all those bushes. Someone in my garden club was mentioning that if you plant your roses closer than 4 feet apart that you should strip leaves off the bottom 1/3 of the bush---makes sense to me, as those leaves aren't getting much sunlight & might be prone to blackspot & the other nasties, but I don't know, may be worth a try? And I believe you have convinced me to buy one more rose, Boscobel, perhaps for a container on my new patio. I think it is an excellent idea to go ahead & monetize your channel---it's so slimy of YT to put ads on anyway. But those of us w/ premium subscriptions don't see the ads & supposedly you will get a small cut of that subscription money. For a long time before I got the Premium subscription, I didn't see ads b/c I had an ad blocker, but then YT cracked down & they would just stop the video for a while & threaten to kick me off. I've heard that some ad blockers have a hack around letting anyone know they're being blocked but I don't really know. You go to a great deal of trouble & give your lovely viewers great enjoyment & ad vice, so do it. Thanks for sharing your garden!

    • @Jay_Jay
      @Jay_Jay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there vintage,
      Yes brother Cadfael is looking nice currently, I suspect it’s in a too sunny/exposed position but he isn’t getting moved, he’s growing very well so I will leave him be exactly where he is.
      Yes I have yt premium also just to avoid the ads. And yes yt can be annoying with there circumnavigation. The “today’s sponsor” is even more annoying!

    Just hope you don't mind me trying to contact you this way. I wondered whether you "Shovel Pruned" your David Austin Carolyn Knight rose/s? I have two, which are turning out to be constant black spot magnets! I am considering the future place of quite a few of my current rose varieties at this juncture.

      Hi lovely English Peter of course it’s always good to hear from you.
      Carolyn knight I’m unsure. This year she got moved to a more sheltered spot in the front garden and is again a blackspot magnet, its flowers burst quickly in any heat or rain I find. But then when I think she’s going she produces the most gorgeous flower again. I’m not sure I know another rose would suit her position very well. Hmmm let’s see what the next year brings. :)

Personally i have never had an advert whilst watching your videos so maybe im one of very few but you tube dont play fair at all. If you dont tick that box your videos wont get noticed as much as those that have adverts. I love seeing your garden and i also asked uncle toms when i should stop spraying and yes it can be done through to approx October time. My roses look fantastic. The start of the year was awful and they were riddled with aphids. I still follow your suggestion with the diluted rose tonic and it has definitely helped stop the scorching. Im thrilled with 90% of my roses this year ( i only spray the tonic every 4 weeks and use a seaweed here, and there too). Ill be doing the same next year. I am persisting with The Poet's Wife despite its floppiness, which I will try to support better next year - I bought Bring Me Sunshine as a possible replacement, but (a) my wife says she likes TPW, and (b) I think that BMS would be too tall to go in that spot. I agree with your positive view of Lady of S., Eustacia and Gabriel - all have flowered pretty continuously for me. Elizabeth is a nice shaped bush and I do like the flowers, but mine has just produced so few this year compared with last year - maybe she'll be back firing on all cylinders for me next year.
    We've had absolutely torrential rain today, so we have a lot of bent stems, bedraggled flowers and a lot that have lost their petals entirely, but as you say Queen of Sweden's blooms stand up well to rain. I don't seem to see adverts on TH-cam (except when presenters do product adverts as part of their videos) - but I have no idea why not. I am sure that I won't be put off watching your videos if adverts do appear though. And if, by watching, I give you enough to buy a pint on me, that's fine! I do think, as you suggest, that your new phone is not producing the same quality as your last - the focus seems slower and you commented on the skipping - perhaps it's faulty? I know mine is very poor at reproducing reds, but I am not buying a new phone just for that. Anyway, thanks for the video - it made my rainy day!

      Hi nik yes it’s a strange thing. Elizabeth this year in my garden has been continual flowering. It’s been in flower with buds and new growth coming through. Wasn’t this good last year. Nor was it usually fragrant! :) Queen of Sweden to out flower Olivia rose Austin this year I think is most surprising also. I just think different years different locations.
      I was just investigating my phone camera nik. I’m reading there were problems with the 15 pro max. This was the first video I shot and after watching the video it’s way worse than I feared!!!! Flicking like that and the colour/focus is awful. Problem is I’ve had the phone nearly a month not sure a replacement can be easily aquired. Annoyed I didn’t test video when I got it.
      Yes I’m not sure why you don’t get pop up adverts. I have TH-cam premium so don’t get them but I think most people do. Yes the sponsored ads I do get but I can assure you they won’t happen on my channel. They are even more infuriating. :)

    I'm so pleased you have decided to monetize your channel! This is just an extra motivation to produce more videos and generate more content for us. My best performing rose this year is Dannahue, but my Elizabeth was also doing pretty good so totally get that, my plant is even healthier than yours sitting in a shadier spot so I think she is really healthy overall. Bring me sunshine is another monster that smells surprisingly like Boscobel- it has two scents, one is more medical and one is Boscobel, depending on the stage of the flower opening - I think you'd like that one, but the plant is HUGE.

    • @nikkonch
      @nikkonch 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I recently bought Bring Me Sunshine - have you got any tips on how to grow it since it gets huge? Would an obelisk or canes be useful to support her or can she just be left to her own devices? Does she grow wide?

    • @vorong2ru
      @vorong2ru 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It grows taller than wider and it's more like a shrub rather than a climber in it's growth habit, so you get lots of basal canes and lots of tall stems. I've seen 2 meter by 2 meter plants in DA gardens so It needs a lot of space. The stems aren't thick on my plant yet so it's slightly floppy. I have it on the obelisk and it's doing fine but it needs to be tightened into that obelisk, if you leave it unattended it will just flop all over it and won't look good. I also have it in a baseless pot which I won't recommend as it makes it even taller than it actually is, however if you want it to look down on you from the above- that will work nicely. The scent is amazing and it's very prolific, lots of flowers! @@nikkonch

    Hi Jay, just checked out your video and you mentioned about shovel pruning your Poet’s wife rose bush. I have a question about planting a new Rose bush where a previous Rose bush was taken out. Did you notice that new plant doesn’t grow as vigorously as it should due to Rose sickness or more appropriately named Rose Replant Disease. Not many people mention this and I was just wondering if you have heard or experienced this.

      Hi Jeff.
      I have dug up several roses that had been growing for a year or two and replaced a new rose in the exact same spot without issue. However I’ve also had issue on one or two occasions.
      From now on I will always dig out get rid of the old soil, place an empty cardboard box in the hole and plant the new rose in the cardboard box filling it with fresh new soil.
      Also if I have opportunity to leave the area empty for a few months prior to planting the new rose I will do that also.
      I was told if a rose is planted in the ground for 5 years plus it will most likely cause issue. But I suspect it can also take less time than this. Best of luck.

      @@Jay_Jay We are in a moderate drought this year so there has been a low amount of growth on roses even with watering!!! it worries me going into autumn/winter with dry roots and canes. Winter winds dry canes enough without them starting out dry. I've seen what roses can take drier weather. First Crush has 0 black spot plus its blossoms last a few days even in this dryness which is good! Sonia Rykiel has a little black spot but damn its fragrance is STRONG! it's Abraham Darby x Graham Thomas i believe. Odd it has good b.s. resistance being English not bred by Austins. So far its wide, so i'm hoping it will build up. Sweet Mademoiselle has 0 b.s. with an English parent, most likely Graham Thomas. It seems European breeders like to use him. 1:56 Yes, my Poet's Wife is the only rose that I have under shade to prevent her blooms from fading under strong sunlight. Her fragrance is intoxicating. 5:31 Oh my! Earth Angel, absolutely flawless old romantic Victorian, Redoute cabbage rose form with definite grapefruit scent under old rose scent. Summer heat that discouraged my Earth Angel aka Christiana Herzegovina has abated here in Ohio, so she is recovering from that now. 7:45 Eustacia Vye exhales a wonderful, strong, old rose perfume underlaid with perhaps camphor scent, more remarkable is that the centers glow as if a sunbeam is shining on them, truly a must have rose. 8:13 Boscabel, nice cabbage form. 10:07 Oh my Francois Rabaillard takes first prize for black spot, totally denuded itself of foliage , replenished it's foliage, now well on it's way to denuding itself again. I have quite reached my limit with this so come next springtime I am going to learn what is a reliable preventative to spray or dust on. 11:43 The bright sunshine is overexposng for video, bright overcast is best, but we do what we can when we have opportunity. 18:07 Yes, the adverts are annoying, but they never discourage me when there is good content. If we have magazines and they are full of adverts, we don't pitch the magazine because of the adverts, operating costs must be recovered in some way, otherwise the service would disappear. And if the advert income helps to buy more roses, then THAT is good ! LOL! I instantly skip through the adverts anyhow unless I am too preoccupied with something.
