    A good friend of mine whom I know via 13th Cent re-enactment served aboard HMS Sheffield during the falklands war as a rating. Obviously he suffered a great amount of emotional trauma and post traumatic stress from the the incident. But over the last few years he has recently been able to speak about his experiences more confidently. One of his most fond memories in the Navy is training with sterling SMGs aboard a ship, and desperately trying to avoid the ricochets.

      I'm very glad to hear your friend has been able to talk more, recently. Hopefully a healing experience. A relative on my wife's side served aboard HMS Fearless and thankfully came through with little serious trauma though he attributes that to having been down in the engine room for most of the time he was down south!

    The gloves were not called combat gloves but "weapons handling gloves" they were always referred to as NI (Northern Ireland) gloves though. I carried a Jaguar 65 in two tone green for years bought by my Father as my graduation present and carried until i was issued an Airbourne Bergan. I can't believe a blue one woukd be carried, we sweated blood looking for comfortable green civvy rucks. Air attacks were a constant risk on the Falklands.

    Great video! That RAC pattern helmet looks amazing. Is it unissued? I've been looking for one for some time now and not having much luck. They used to be easily avaliable but I suppose that was quite a while ago now. Anyhow, thanks for this. Very well done.

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter, the RAC helmet is actually one which had been badly knocked about to make a very poor repro of a HSAT. I filled the hole for the third chinstrap attachment point (actually drilled in the front...) and resprayed it.

    Just a small point to a well made video. When putting camouflage on a SLR. You never put any on the barrel. It would get too hot when firing and any material could burn. Thank you for your well made videos. John R , Ex csm, Infantry. 69 to 93.

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers John! In the photo this was referenced from the chap I was copying had added scrim to the barrel, perhaps because at this point the Scots Guards were on the short march from San Carlos to positions just east of the settlement and as I understand it whilst there was naturally a significant threat of air attack, ground action was not expected. That said I think I've wrapped it rather too tightly here when looking back at the original photograph. Thank you for the advice and I shall avoid this in future as it is atypical, I'm not aiming to mislead people!

    I used to have exactly the same mug. They were sold in the NAAFI and were guaranteed to lose heat from the liquid contents quicker than any other method.

    hmm seems a bit off that they painted their face, used camo covers for their helmets and wrapped their black rifles for more camo but the still HAD A BIG ASS BLUE RUCKSACK ON THEIR BACKS?!

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I've never quite understood that but it's what's shown in the photo. It's true to say that somepainted theirs to create a cmouflge effect and some photographs show civilian rucksacks covered in scrim and camouflage nets.

      British infantry soldiers were getting by with mainly private purchase bergans right up to the advent of plce bergans in the late 80,s ! The 58 pattern large pack was awful!

    • @faeembrugh
      @faeembrugh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Guards were not really the best choice for that operation. They were neither equipped not trained for the kind of Falklands battles that occurred and well done to them for doing as well as they did. I think there were those who wanted some of the Highland regiments who were trained and equipped in Norway-area ops to go out but top brass wanted to see the Guards represented. Who knows?

    • @josephvandyck5469

      Possibly rubber bands or electrical tape.?

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used electrical tape, it is difficult to tell precisely in the original photographs but this method works.

    Question on the helmets, I see the navy wearing the RAC type helmet but have also seen a good few pics of marines wearing them too.was that the type of helmet they were issued or did they also use the mk4 helmet?

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are definitely some photos of RM with the Mk IV. It is my understanding that the RAC helmets were held as part of ships stores and issued out as needed. As for the Mk IVs I'm not sure if these were individual issue to Marines. Sorry I can't give a more definite answer!

  • @josephvandyck5469

    What was the camouflage pattern worn by the Scots Guard? Possible an early variant of DPM?

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just bog standard DPM. 1968 Pattern combats which were standard issue at the time.

  • @darthsoldier6939
    @darthsoldier6939 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kinda off topic but i recently obtained the large backpack that's worn with p37 webbing in marching order but the backpack is marked what seems to be blackman 1970 which confuses me because i thought that p37 production was completely stopped by then
    Amazing video as always btw

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was still being made quite late on under contract to the Royal Navy it's possible your pack is one of these.

      Yes, it was done I believe if the Bergans were of a less tactical colour .

    Why were they issued civi bergens and not dmp ones?

    • @RiflemanMoore

      Because of a lack of issue bergens. Many went out and bought their own.

      @@RiflemanMoore The Karrimor range at the time was quite good and sat on the waist very well. Totally different and an eye compared with the replica WWII metal framed canvas Bergen purchased from the Famous Army Stores. In '83 I purchased the Lynx II and I have still have it, excellent product. Nothing in their product range was manufactured in Olive Green like it is today!
