Don't play any more, but when I did I use to wear my beloved para smock. It was my Dads issued one and had been all over the world with him, which he gave to me when I was in Cadets. Certainly made all my instructor's jealous, and was a lot warmer then the c95 smock.
As I understand it a smock was an over the head overgarment worn by agricultural workers being issued to troops to protect uniforms on long sea voyages in the 19th century that ended up being dyed khaki, slit down the front with buttons or ties sewn on and worn as early camouflage in India.
Typed in British Army Smocks and this came up. I'm a big fan of British army smocks. What a great treat for my Sunday morning. Really enjoyable presentation. Thanks for posting. 👍
RADAR REDCAR marketed their DPM smock as an SAS Smock, they also did an artic version and a SBS and Mountain version at one point. They also did somthing that had masses of pockets which was called the Sniper smock IIRC. Oh and they often did BLACK versions
Yes lads!!! Good stuff again. I still have a smock in the plastic bag I picked it up in from slops. Hated them. Too heavy, wouldn't dry and the best bit about them - the fleece-lined pockets, we're of no use because we'd get press-ups if we used them! Gadge is spot on about hoods; nobody wore/wears them, and to stow them we always took our lead from Royal, and rolled them inwards, using the wire to keep it in a nice, tight roll.
Re the para smock, those seen worn on Bloody Sunday (and in use in the Para Reg until the mid-1970s) were NOT very light versions of the DPM para smock. They were 1959 Pattern Denison smocks, similar to late WW2 full-zip Denisons but with a noticeably yellow base colour.
Excellent topic. My smock collection includes a WPG repro Denison full zip, original 68 pattern, desert and dpm Canadian button without shoulder Velcro, and a mint gabardine dpm. I really enjoy the variations. Hi from NJ.
I have my grandads 1952 dated Denison, its a second pattern but with knitted cuffs, interestingly he was TA and a tanky at that. I asked him why he got one and he asked the same question at the time and was told only half of him needed to be camoglaged!
great video, brought back some memories of my old kit and my old mans. I had 2 favourite smocks when I served (been out nearly a decade). MTP version of the 'SAS' Arctic Windproof and an MVP lined version of the MTP smock you showed at the end. There were so many variants of the DPM S95 smock, I think the ripstop was the worst, but the version before the one showed (late model with velcro) had a stupid little pocket on the arm that no one knew what it was for. '85 pattern was good for one thing - camp. It was a doddle to iron and thus good for parades and guard mount, other than that fell apart with a strong wind. Most troops I knew, cut off the wire on the hoods and they tend to leave them flat on their backs when worn now rather than rolling up.
Good video. I've got a 1980s windproof smock which I bought from a company called SASS (I think) back in the late 80's or early 90's. Can just about read the label inside which says '(SAS) Windproof smock'. I remember RADAR being one of the other companies doing them.
One smock that you didn't mention was the DPM sniper smock. Extremely rare, only issued to snipers. My Battalion only ever had 6 at any one time and if one went missing there was hell to pay. A general description is similar in design to a para smock but covered in nylon loops to stuff foliage through, padded elbows and a strange hook gadget on the upper arm. Snipers in my Battalion never used them and the only time you ever saw them was on KAPE tours and open day show and tell stands.
I used to have a sniper smock. never used it, really heavy and cumbersome and quite specialist so didnt really think many people would want us to mention it... the hooks are so you can drag a rifle on them by its sling or in a drag bag when crawling. As you say hardly anyone used them , the battalion snipers tended to make their own ghillies using other smocks as a base
Radar in Redcar and I think SASS bother made a sniper version with more pockets and tabs for foliage. I think (not sure) the extra pockets were for ammo clips or mags for sniping rifles and were mounted on the lower back, so the shooter could retrieve ammo from his smock without having to roll over when in the prone position.
When I joined up as a boy soldier in 72 we got the plain green two pocket work/fatigue jacket, plus DPM 68 patterns, they were very well made and ironed to a drill pigs delight. They were OK but not great for field soldiering, most got exceeding tailored so we looks Puka for the local girls :) but heavy as hell when soggy.. The 80s stuff was obviously made to the cheapest tender and was considerred water soluable, many lads got quite upset when they tried to take our 68s off us. The 90 pattern smock was far more useful, practical, very well made, a looser cut than the 68 pattern allowing for better flexibility and cargo carrying whilst retaining some style :) . The Soldier 95 abandoned all efforts at "style" or barrack dress chique but was bloody well made from a fabric good choice, pockets etc were well sown together. Its a PROPER combat smock SYSTEM designed with 100% utility in mind, but generally looked like a sack on the squaddie. And it did not blouse nicely as preferred by many regiments. Being Poseurs as well as squaddies we usually sewed down the upper chest pocket bellows , even occasionally doing to bottom pockets as well. Hated wearing DPM pants, often went with either Barrack dress trs in camp or Green lightweights with sewn in creases. I still wear my 90 pattern today but I would love to get a 95 pattern loose cut smock in xxl, none to be had. BTW RESPECTS for not wearing berets and kit you did not earn. Cede Nullis.
Used sas, para and denison smock in airsoft, para smocks when it's really cold as they're thick. Had a private purchase para smock for a few years when serving, it was my go to for exercise as after removing the epalettes and bum flap so didn't catch on cam nets.
Really love 95 pattern, I got my first windproof DPM 5 years ago, fit for SEA weather most of the time(except summer of course) and chest pocket is very useful it's quit big in there. I can hide 2 bottles of Whiskey just in one pocket. keep up a good work!🙌🙌🙌
The SAS smock looks like a great choice. Cotton gabardine. No zip pockets which add thickness and may leak when wet, that is, if you choose to waterproof it. The Windproof 95 is surprisingly heavy.
great video . some helpful info, to determine the material the labels usually state "wash as synthetic" or "wash as cotton", or "50% cotton 50% polyester." after much perseverance I found a 2nd hand 'windproof smock', was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually new; badges (now removed) were 16th signals regt. - serial # suggests manufactured in april 1991, only a few months older than myself blimey! I longed for a W.S. for its gabardine material, of which was phased out in the mid 90s for under poly-cotton blend. The pockets are somewhat cumbersome though and would benefit from popper buttons...
My Jackets are dpm Nato with a fine square feel to it, and my other one is British Army "Falklands" Pattern 68 Parka .Will buy a new one BULLDOG MK2 EVOLVED SAS SMOCK ,Waterproof Lined Military Coat
My Bulldog smock came today it's brillant it has molle on it above pockets and it has 12 pockets, it's like a assault vest built into it. Came from ukmcpro
I'm a bit partial to the Arktis Mountain Smock. Excellent bit of kit, but not cheap. Likewise, for wet weather, the keela smocks are superb. In one game where it was raining faster than my goggles could drain, my core stayed nice and dry.
Trying to figure out what i was issued in 1984 it was a 68 jacket but had covers over the buttons ( wind storm covers i think you said ) and pockets on the inside going around the back in the lining
I’ve had the CS95 DPM which I swapped out for a windproof. Fast forward 10 or so years and I’m using the PCS with gentle modifications to some features, a MTP “sas” windproof and a level peaks. All good in their own rights but all for different purposes.
My first issue was 85 smock, that thin you could spit through it,pockets very thin. Had to use the old Mao Quilted to stay warm. Combat 95 was good, plenty of stash points.buttons were an improvement, never had the Velcro though, union flag on the shoulder was a surprise. Soldier 2000 was good,a hood was a welcome addition. Had Windproof smocks and Para Smock, sewed on extra pockets for storage.
Kit I use when it’s a bit more fresh outside is a CS95 non hooded issue rip stop material smock or a helikon windproof/waterproof lightweight jacket in MTP/MC . Most the time I’m either in a ubacs, various camos normally non-issue repro types. Depending on the weather/season/location/time and team colour will dictate the camo pattern 🤣
I normally use either a tropical shirt or a windproof in dpm when I get the choice. If team rules demand it’s mtp / Multicam. Combination of issue and Crye / Arc’teryx. Though as I’ve lost a load of weight nothing really fits so I’m starting again! Probably just going to stick to surplus issue for the cost.
SAS private purchase " Kabrit Smock " in the 80s from Survival Aids in London in a breathable fabric that was waterproof when wet . I believe cost £150 if memory serves me well . Came complete with Canadian buttons . Tailored (modified ) issue kit with Canadian buttons from a specialist button premises at the top of Portland St . London . Issue crap hat . German Para issue black boots with welted oil acid proof sole and integral tongue for water resistance ,drainage and quick drying . Later MTP included ideas that featured in earlier private purchase smocks . Mesh inner pockets are for drying socks or slow thawing of snow for drinking water while on the move . In cold weather the external zips negate the problem of completely unzipping the front of the smock and exposure to chill to place your pouch of snow or socks inside . Dry feet and water are essential to maintain combat effectiveness regardless of conditions as it is as important to stay hydrated in cold conditions as hot , possibly more so as the brain does not recognise dehydration in winter as readily as in warmer conditions due to reduced blood flow to the extremities . All are very practical features if used as designed . A lesson learned in the South Atlantic as far as UKSF are concerned .
Waw! That was a long one (but very good). I'm using a Mil-tec smock with about 10 pockets. I was looking at a few versions of british smocks, but the sizes were very small... a real shame.
Got my grandads old 68 pattern smock, ripped up to buggery from a “barbed wire incident” and the cuff buttons have now come off, i would restore it if i knew how to sew
I'm an American collector of British Army Smocks. I like my lovely used and faded ripstop 95 with button hood. It even has the shadow on the right shoulder of SAS wings. I also have a newer DPM wire hood it's a bit heavier. I like the wire hood because you can shape it. It had a name tape above the right pocket I'm assuming it once said "parachute rgmt"?
No wings were ever worn on smocks by SAS only Para reg. No Para reg ever wore anything above the pockets except for foreign earned wings. Never ever a unit name or personal name. Hope that helps.
I use a m75 norwegian smock. Its a warm jacket so it works great in norwegian winters. Its still issued kit but most soldiers dont use it. But hunters and home guard soldiers like them. And they are cheap to buy if you dont get the one you used in service.
Wearing one my mate sold me right now in fact! Arctic Windproof is just awesome in this cold weather. And a pretty shade of DPM too, very fashionable :D Edit: Pretty sure mine is the arctic variant to the sas smock that Gadge is on about with the wired hood. Yet to go to an Airsoft game that's cold enough to warrant it but I'm sure I will soon
many thanks , i did visit my friend there but it was a long time ago , i just remember i was living in london at the time but rarely went to that bit of town. Nice guys , like i say that sas smock is from them!
As far as I’m aware, The Stardard Issue MTP smocks still have the fleece lined pockets, they deleted the internal mesh though. The marines have moved away from PCS Issue to UK Crye.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV when we got issued it in training after CS95 our troop boss made us stitch them up. He said we didn’t have them in our day, why do you guys need them! Normally when it the obvious would come down, we would don the Gary goretex over the top which would alleviate getting a wet crotch 🤣!
@Hew Jarsols we rolled our hoods inwards, to make a collar. Bloused the bottom of our jackets, that way when doing mag changes when wearing webbing as opposed to plate carriers, we would throw empty mags in our jackets and they wouldn’t fall out the bottom.
I was lucky enough to find a fat bastard size 68patt para smock at a bootsale for a tenner! It's my go to kit for Cold War, Gulf, and colder skirmish days.
I brought a smock about 30yrs ago from an ex soldier which had button hood and a crouch thingy which you would button on the inside of your jacket. Dnt know what type of smock it was and thank you for telling what the british army call a smock as i thought a smock went over your head
I think originally that was the difference. The smock was a over the head garment that went over your normal working clothes. The name stuck though for any camo combat jacket.
The flap you buttoned in was for parachuting so the smock didn't ride up when jumping, we called them jump smocks back in early 80s. We also had a Canadian jump smock in a lighter shade of British DPM, which also had the flap and had snaps to secure it. The smock was only issued to members of the Special Service Force which I think was a brigade that included the (now disbanded) Canadian Airborne Regiment. It was pretty lightweight, sometimes worn in the field but also worn as a garrison uniform. It was replaced by a horrible woodland style camo and a fugly style of jacket, all before Cadpat was developed.
So the MTP smock you’ve shown in the video is PCS. As you mentioned that used the original CS95 cut clothing in MTP. So the storm flaps came on PCS issue Smocks with the trousers, as well as velcro shirts etc.
I have seen surplus British-issue DPM smocks made with a ripstop material and Canadian buttons. Most have no hood but some came with detachable hood. Tag is marked "Jacket DPM, Field." Who used these?
Hi guys. I have a smock arctic windproof ... however no one has told me the best/preferred way to sort out the hood. I don't roll it, but there's a drawcord... I have heard horror stories of people stuck, snagged etc, what's the best way in your opinion? Great video, subbed!
@Hew Jarsols I had thought of that, I'm pretty sure the 'SAS smock' has it removed, but being a wimp I like to use the hood when it's pissing it down and blowing a gale, and without the wire it'll flap around like fook won't it? Thanks for your reply 😁
I know this may be out of place for the video, but I saw his video with some of his older Colt carbine kits and I was wondering, do any companies make anymore of those mock Ops Inc clones? I have seen a few, but they seem to all be old relics, long discontinued.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Ah, alright. I looked up the type you used and I got the site ApexTac, are you aware if they are a reputable seller, or would it be better if I looked elsewhere?
I mean there is a video in it I mean you have the raf goretex royal navy goretex then there's the raf Foul Weather jacket then there's the dpm and desert mvp jacket then you have the jacket that was made around the Falklands war the rubber waterproof jacket and so on 😂
Hi. Just came across this vid. Great vid. I have a few of these. I also have a DPM wind proof smock but with a label in it saying ‘For Training Purposes Only’. Do you have one like that? All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
I thought I’d answered. I’ll rephrase. I have a Windproof jacket (combat 95 type) badged up as RAF Regiment that’s marked as ‘For Training Purposes Only’
Para smocks arent easy to come by, really need to watch ebay for a genuine issue. I got a brand new one that was a size too big. Then managed to get one that fit me about a month or so later. All that was wrong with it was a faulty zip, so was an absolute steal for such an easy fix. I stand by my mtp para smock, its become my everyday jacket.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV I completely understand what you say about it being a badge if honour, like the maroon beret. For me personally, ive never had any experience where a service member or ex service member has felt mocked about it, if anything its sparked more conversations about our time serving. As for a beret, it really depends, if im doing an impression kit id wear a maroon or green beret, but under no circumstance will i attach a cap badge. I would however wear a navy beret with my old cap badge. But its all down to personal preference for the individual.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV i feel, aslong as your prepared for the inevitable hate. And make it very clear your not who your pretending to be. Most vets and active service dont bother too much. Regardless though keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing whats next
@@AnvilAirsoftTV ok ive got Ammo boots from WWII, the successor DMS, the following BCH and i probably have an assault boot and some pro boots somewhere as well as the issue jungle boot. What i dont have are any of the desert boots or the newer stuff like 'haix' but its doable as a loose overview
@@AnvilAirsoftTV we all learn something all the time, it's actually the last version of the smock before Mpt Camo. check the label, it might have ' for training only'
It does. I’ll go looking for earlier c95 one. Not that I need an excuse to hit the surplus shop. I’ve also put a note in the video description. Thanks for your help.
I think we talked about the 80s/90s gabardine Windproof smocks in this episode. The other one most associated with them was the WW2 vintage version as used by B2Z in Iraq. We could do if Gadge has a WW2 version.
What kit and especially Smocks do you use when playing? Let us know.

The arm pocket on the 68 smocks was for the First Field Dressing, sort of giant tampon thing with a bandage attached.

I use a m75 norwegian smock. Its a warm jacket so it works great in norwegian winters. Its still issued kit but most soldiers dont use it. But hunters and home guard soldiers like them. And they are cheap to buy if you dont get the one you used in service.
I’ve not seen those. I’ll have a look at them.
Wearing one my mate sold me right now in fact! Arctic Windproof is just awesome in this cold weather. And a pretty shade of DPM too, very fashionable :D
Edit: Pretty sure mine is the arctic variant to the sas smock that Gadge is on about with the wired hood. Yet to go to an Airsoft game that's cold enough to warrant it but I'm sure I will soon
I wear my SAS Windproof with just a T-shirt most of the year.
Gadge it was 21v sas at the Duke of York in the Kings Road of sloane Square
Thanks!
many thanks , i did visit my friend there but it was a long time ago , i just remember i was living in london at the time but rarely went to that bit of town. Nice guys , like i say that sas smock is from them!
As far as I’m aware, The Stardard Issue MTP smocks still have the fleece lined pockets, they deleted the internal mesh though.
The marines have moved away from PCS Issue to UK Crye.
RM when we were issued smocks we would roll our hoods inwards to make it like a thick collar. We would use elastic to secure the hood in place.
Thanks for letting us know. Not a fan of those pockets in anything other than perfect conditions. Mine get soaked.
Nice work.
What Price Glory produce 68 pattern smocks and trousers that I'm told are good quality.
denisons.... the very originals, i thought a big tarp was laid out and brushed with paint, then cut into patterns and sewn up.
Excellent video on a often ignored garment when it comes to airsofting.
We love a smock.
So the MTP smock you’ve shown in the video is PCS.
As you mentioned that used the original CS95 cut clothing in MTP.
So the storm flaps came on PCS issue Smocks with the trousers, as well as velcro shirts etc.
Thanks. I was going off the date on mine which is pretty early. I’ll put a correction in the description.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV no problemo! All about sharing information 🥰
The later MTP smocks have a zip on the fleece pockets
I have seen surplus British-issue DPM smocks made with a ripstop material and Canadian buttons. Most have no hood but some came with detachable hood. Tag is marked "Jacket DPM, Field." Who used these?
I don’t know I’m afraid.
Did you figured out? I have the same doubt
"Id feel a little bit dodgy wearing that para smock"... is the polite way to say, I'm terrified a para will see me in it and go bloody mental 🤣
No chance I’m wearing a para smock to the pub :)
Love this video
I got a brand new arctic dpm from silvermans, cost me 180 but I really wanted one lol.
I know this may be out of place for the video, but I saw his video with some of his older Colt carbine kits and I was wondering, do any companies make anymore of those mock Ops Inc clones? I have seen a few, but they seem to all be old relics, long discontinued.
They are out of production now. I make conversion kits for an FMA suppressor. If you are interested drop me a message on Instagram or Facebook.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Ah, alright. I looked up the type you used and I got the site ApexTac, are you aware if they are a reputable seller, or would it be better if I looked elsewhere?
What smock come after
British Army issue Temperate Combat Smock 94
You should do a video on army waterproof jackets now that would be epic
Show some old we2 ponchos 95 pattern poncho
Nice idea. I’ll see what Gadge has tucked away in stores.
I mean there is a video in it
I mean you have the raf goretex royal navy goretex then there's the raf Foul Weather jacket then there's the dpm and desert mvp jacket then you have the jacket that was made around the Falklands war the rubber waterproof jacket and so on 😂
Woohoo new video with a cuppa tea...does it get better? 🙌
Need a big cuppa tea for this one!
Hi.
Just came across this vid.
Great vid. I have a few of these.
I also have a DPM wind proof smock but with a label in it saying ‘For Training Purposes Only’.
Do you have one like that?
All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
I’ve got an RAF one. Means it’s not IRR treated against night vision devices.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Nice.
So…..you ever see one like the one I am on about?
I thought I’d answered. I’ll rephrase. I have a Windproof jacket (combat 95 type) badged up as RAF Regiment that’s marked as ‘For Training Purposes Only’
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Sorry, miss understood, as I thought the RAF ones were completely different, not DPM looking.
Cheers.
Is there a good source that shows the differences between the different iterations of para smock?
Someone will be running a website that goes into all the detail. Rifleman Moore on TH-cam has covered a lot of British and commonwealth uniforms.
Where can I get one like the last shown in the vid? eBay seems to be out of stock for my size....
If you are in the UK army surplus stores will have loads.
How does those smocks work with a chest rig ? Does the chest rig forbid the access to the chest pockets or else ?
They can limit how much you can carry in the upper pockets, As you long as you don't go mad I've not had a problem using my normal setup.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV well I am now on the hunt for a smock then, it’s a shame they are not as cheap in France as in the UK 😅
The movie The Wild Geese, what uniforms were they wearing?

@@AnvilAirsoftTV Thank you!
I’ve got a DPM one coming but I won’t be wearing it unless it’s for a photo shoot :)
@@jockin_around8314 we’re very similar when it comes to cap badges and berets. We do sometimes wear Int Corp insignia for role playing at events.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV i feel, aslong as your prepared for the inevitable hate. And make it very clear your not who your pretending to be. Most vets and active service dont bother too much. Regardless though keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing whats next
Would it be possible for a British army boots video
It’ll depend on how many different boots Gadge has. I have one pair!
@@AnvilAirsoftTV ok ive got Ammo boots from WWII, the successor DMS, the following BCH and i probably have an assault boot and some pro boots somewhere as well as the issue jungle boot. What i dont have are any of the desert boots or the newer stuff like 'haix' but its doable as a loose overview
thats a soldier 2000 smock as opposed to a c95 smock.
Thanks. You learn something every day.
@@AnvilAirsoftTV
we all learn something all the time, it's actually the last version of the smock before Mpt Camo. check the label, it might have ' for training only'
It does. I’ll go looking for earlier c95 one. Not that I need an excuse to hit the surplus shop. I’ve also put a note in the video description. Thanks for your help.
Great video, Would have been interesting if you could have sourced a SASS made Kit Karry smock to compare to
An issue one from the same time period ?
Agreed but our collections are only so big and our budget non existent! :)
@@AnvilAirsoftTV I hear you, and those SASS jackets are starting to skyrocket
Debbie McGear
Glad someone got the joke! :)
@@AnvilAirsoftTV Debbie added a great dynamic! Another superb video guys
You lads able to do a video on genuine “Sas” smocks ?? There are a lot of good fakes and private purchases on the market
I think we talked about the 80s/90s gabardine Windproof smocks in this episode. The other one most associated with them was the WW2 vintage version as used by B2Z in Iraq. We could do if Gadge has a WW2 version.
I meant to hit the like option but hit the dislike option I'm still waiting on my new glasses so couldn't see!!!!
