I'm really gonna miss Al on these videos, ive watched him for years and years and he was the inspiration behind me building my own car, the engine build, the fabrication for my turbo kit, wiring in a haltech, hes inspired me to have a go myself, just gotta say a massive thanks to Al and woody for all there brilliant videos over the years!
How about leave old mate to make his own decisions. If he’s decided he wants to do something else he can and should. I doubt woody would ever say no to him rejoining at a later point if al wanted to.
I suspect that because of the popularity of the channel Al has more work than he can poke a stick at....and filming content takes a hell of a lot of time. Pretty sure he's just going to concentrate on doing those jobs. He's still going to be there working, just not hosting the channel like he has been. After all, it's still his workshop.
For the shifter, you could also snag a shortened shifter bracket intended for use when putting the Z32 box into an S/R chassis car, it also gets rid of the floppy flexible bushes and the prone-to-failure chassis mount rubber bush that drops the shifter onto your driveshaft when it it lets go. It's a common mod for standard VG30 Z32s as well (albeit not shortened) as it massively improves shifter feel and eliminates a point of failure.
also for the HICAS delete, you can get brackets that emulate the factory non-HICAS toe arm locations and utilise the same toe arms as a non-HICAS car, and once you press out the always-trashed HICAS ball joints on the knuckle the hole left is the same size so you can use a poly bush or spherical joint in that location.
@@30dettjimvg replacing the shifter bracket doesn't require using a short shifter, what I'm referring to as "shortened" literally means shortening the distance between the shifter and the gearbox, not changing the shift throw
This was absolutely the correct engine for this job! I mean the exact way you built it from the bottom up. Such a legend, can't wait to see this thing finished.
Agreed I would love to throw an RB30DETT build in a clean 300ZX chassis. That RB sound at full revs just sounds so menacing and raw compared to the VG.
Safe travels Al. Its been a pleasure getting to know you over the last few years. Thanks for all the knowledge dropped and inspiration. Not just for the mechanics but as a role model because of your laid back nature and hard working ethic. The world needs more good dudes like you. [Firm hand shake and slap on the shoulder] Thank you .
Those twin turbos + pods with a big plazmaman intake on the other side is going to look sick! Al keeps saying this is for the missus but we all know that Gus is going to pounce on it the second anyone blinks :D
hey ale, while you are modifying the length of the oem z32 shifter brackets. you should take apart the shifter, then hammer the pivot ball all the way down so you can grind the pinch seam off of the shaft, then hammer the pivot ball back up but 1" higher then its oem position. shouldnt have to weld or grnid it friction fit will keep it in place. but this will make your shifter fell night and day crisper! along with a set of brash shifter bushings. the oem plastic ones are junk. this is hands down the easiest shifter mod. good as oem but crisp and fast shifts like after market short throw shifter.. well worth. i promise!
For me as a mechanic i love the realness of the work that really goes in a prodject.. Never liked the channels on tv that gave a wrong impression of what it really takes to actually make something.. Wishing yall the best
I've always admired you patience Al, if that was me in your shoes going back and forth to the beach like that.. .... lets just say Woody would have some editing and bleeping to do 😂. Love your work gentleman
My dad taught me how to work on cars. Al taught me how to be patient and go the extra mile to build something special. His influence will sorely be missed. But im very grateful for what I have learned watching your videos 👍🏼
al, great speaking in this video. something to be said about that skill accompanied with your technical prowess. a craftsman that has perfected his craft must move on to bigger and better things. hope retirement for you is as great as my time has been watching you build things.
With the brakes you could have done a full 370Z Akebono conversion that i have seen on The Aussie Shed channel an extremely detailed rebuild of a a modified 300zx, definitely one to have a look at.
Would have to run 18 inch wheels for those not to mention some semi-creative machining of the rear caliper to fit the adapter brackets. Can’t run the Akebonos on anything less than an 18 inch plus the offset has to be something funny to clear the caliper face otherwise would have to run spacers which, if I remember correctly, are illegal in Australia.
@@TJCook-jo8pg Oh I know. You have to have them to run the Akebonos regardless. They won’t straight bolt on without them. Still doesn’t change the fact that the rotor size for them is so large and where the caliper is relocated to with the adapter that you HAVE to run an 18 inch wheel and not all 18 inch wheels will work. Concept Z and Z1 both outline that in their instruction guide along with a cut out template to see if the wheels you have will fit or not. I had to get some 10mm spacers so the calipers and 2 piece rotors from Z1 would clear my 17 inch Enkei Lusso wheels
Your build is going to be awesome and up there with your usual quality. I will slightly disagree with the video title..... The VG30DETT is a great engine, provided you are prepared to maintain it properly.

Agreed, decent brakes are a must since the stock ones aren't really up to stopping a stock Z32, never mind a modified one. Got a set of the 370Z Akebonos on my Z32 and huge improvement. Roughly 350mm on each corner. Will need some 18's to fit over them, but well worth it. 350Z wheels fit over them fine if you're still after an OE sort of look.
Re: flexi brake line - it’s so you can remove the caliper without disconnecting the brake line. It helps facilitate pad and disc changes without letting air into the system.
That is not what they were talking about. They were questioning why it has an unnecessary bracket and hard line at the caliper. Most other manufacturers simply screw the brake hose directly into the caliper. Even my Infiniti G37X sedan had hard lines that wrapped around the knuckles, while aftermarket hose removed the hard lines.
28:50 "Good Tires" with the better struts and more power is a sure fire way to tear those "low ks"/Low mile , but still old rotten rubber bushes out. While it may work for a while, would have been cool to see them just throw some poly upgraded bushes in to give it the complete restomod feel.
On the brake rotors, to get the candy effect, you are supposed to paint them white or silver. Imagine it more like a colored clear coat... main reason they came out that maroon color
Great acknowledgement of the complete cooling package there. I’ve spent time around earth moving equipment and the cooling issues they have, moving back into automotive mechanical some guys just just can’t grasp the concept.
