I love how this one focused more on character dynamics and less on piecing together spooky set pieces. The demonic possession could’ve easily been an excuse to just do easy scares but instead you felt how desperate Jesses friends and family were to help him. It really made the inevitable ending hit harder than the others
Hispanic was the right word but the fact that you guys cared and spoke of about the Hispanic community and heritage with such respect is such a commendable aspect of episode!
The Marked Ones was great. All the dark magic and witches and Brujeria reminded me of all the stories I’d hear growing up from my Mexican parents. Characters reminded me of people growing up, by far the most relatable ghost film I’ve ever seen 💯💯
I know I’m a little late, but I’m sad they didn’t notice (or just didn’t talk about) my favorite scare! It’s where they go in Ana’s apartment the first time and they’re in the nursery and Jesse is standing in front of a mirror. Jesses moving around, but the reflection is just staring at him… gives me chills! Also, the confusion at the beginning about how long the movie is, I’m pretty sure they watched the extended cut, because i watched the one that was 84 minutes and i had no idea what they were talking about when describing the church scene
The Marked Ones is my personal favorite. The RT score could be because the Paranormal Activity series was getting stale and tiring, so most critics just blindly wrote it off as "just another one".
I started watchng this without having seen Marked Ones even though I faithfully watched the other PA movies when they came out. The fact that you guys were so positive and pleased about a film I refused to see when I heard it being advertised 5 years ago (because disappointment) made me watch the film before coming back. Marked Ones was great, I really liked it. Fabulous sense of humour and the characters are so well done. Hector and Irma especially get an A+.
I’m from Oxnard so yeah Hispanic is the right word. Hearing that Marked Ones was, at the time, going to be made in my hometown was mind boggling. I actually had friends live in the apartment complex they filmed in and we were like “bro you’re gonna be in the movie theater!” It was amazing. Love the podcast btw.
This by far is my favorite of the paranormal activity movies. Firstly because as someone who's Mexican-American, I get everything they're talking about. Especially with the grandmother snatching the Simon toy away and blessing the house. Plus, I agree that it's by far the best of the series, it kept me in suspense the entire time.
Actually, there IS (fanboy here, I know) something from the 4th in this movie. Wyatt/Hunter appears for a split second during the chase sequence at Grandma's house by the end. It's a super hard easteregg to find, but it's there! Haha, don't mind me, I've watched this series back to back.
The care that this film took letting the cast of primarily Mexican and Latinx actors and actresses flex their own experiences has always made it a fave of mine. Because, frankly, it’s something that is wholly missing in haunting style horror films in Hollywood. You want a person super freaked out by spooky demonic witch things and for their family to be down to also be spooked and try to defend themselves? Mexicans are all about keeping that brujería (witchcraft) far the hell away from anyone they love.
I agree with your comment but my fucking God don't use "Latinx"! It's patronizing. www.vox.com/platform/amp/2020/11/5/21548677/trump-hispanic-vote-latinx
Fun Fact: I watched Marked Ones recently after watching the podcast for the first movie. As soon as I noticed Hector was in Katie’s home, I immediately rewound to find the jar of peppers. I was not disappointed
Actually something does happen when they do the spell in the church. A figure comes out from one of the pillars in the big stain glass window for a little bit and then goes back behind the pillar.
This is gonna be long. I'm sorry. The creepy witch lady that shows up by the end at Louis' house you mentioned is Louis :) they're portrayed by the same actress and imdb lists it as Louis (don't know about the woman who turns the camera off by the final scene tho). Also, your theory about various time traveling doors are pretty much correct (kinda?). It was never exposed in the series, but remember the 4th movie when Robbie drew a key symbol on Wyatt's chest and later we see a chain-locked door at Robbie's house? I guess this was Christopher Landon pretty much telling us that the choosen first males were the "keys" to open those portals? Then again, a lot of the lore of this saga is never properly explained (which I don't think it's a problem. After all, I love the aura of mystery the Paranormal Activity mythology has). It's a bummer that The Ghost Dimension it's probably the worst ending I've ever seen in a movie franchise. It's also one of the worst horror movies I've seen, and that's coming from someone who loves PA to the point of defending the 4th movie. I blame it all on the fact that Christopher wasn't involved in the making of the 6th film at all. A shame since he has been crafting the story from the very second installment. I remember being so mad after leaving the theater haha I went to the point of re-writing the final movie in a fanscript, which I consider my personal canon ending lol. By the way, you guys should check out the TH-cam channel Jacob Degloshi. It was a marketing campaign made by the PA crew back in 2013. It tells the story of Sarah, Alex's friend from the 4th one (turns out even this small, insignificant character was somehow involved in the witch cult shenanigans lmao). It's like a side story that tells what happens between Paranormal Activity 4 and The Marked Ones. Almost like a "Paranormal Activity 4.5" haha Anyway, great podcast! Luv u guys! TMO is my favorite PA movie, too ^^
Love the podcast, love your guys dynamic. I really like that someone else actually enjoyed this movie, which I routinely call the Mexican Paranormal Activity movie (with all affection, as I'm of Native American/Mexican descent). I especially loved how when the kids went to investigate the coven they didn't just bring flashlights and a camcorder...they brought homeboys with shotguns, which I gotta say, reminded me of those cousins I don't get to see too much of due to them being in and out of jail/prison a bunch. It really was a proactive ending, unlike PA 4. Even if they went down, at least they went out fighting. Which is appropriate, cause Emiliano Zappata is quoted as having said "It's better to die on your feet fighting as a free person than living on your knees as a slave"
That firework scene is really fucking good btw. It increases the tension SOOOOOOO well. The immediate danger we know of with the incoming explosion from the lit fuse, the startling noise from Oscar jumping down, and then the reveal that Oscar WAS a danger because he was fleeing a crime scene. just. such a well written way of raising the stakes.
Honestly, the scene when Jesse goes into the basement looking for Chavo is one of the scariest scenes in the franchise. I absolutely love The Marked Ones
I wanna speak on this movie as someone from Oxnard. Man did they nail the feel of the city. The people. The way we talk. I know it wasn't filmed in Oxnard but it might as well have been. I loved this movie and I'm so glad you guys did. Oxnard is heavily Hispanic.
You may have already noticed this, but around 22:45 when they are flipping through that book there’s a family picture of Katie and kristi and their mom. And then it looks like a single headshot of dennis.
Hey James and Chelsea, I have been watching the channel for a while now (first looking for a video on John Carpenter's The Thing) and absolutely love what you do! Horror is one of my favorite genres and I thank you for exposing to me not only many movies but also so much information; Chelsea is great at the research for the podcasts. Just a suggestion for a podcast, I think that you might enjoy Sweeney Todd...of course you have a schedule, but perhaps just something to think about. Thanks again for all of the content, one of my regular channels on TH-cam.
I got a notification from Final Destination 3. It said my comment was highlighted. Went to check the vid and saw this. That's why i'm here. Loved the podcast by the way , don't stop you two!
This is my favorite Bc as a Latino it’s the only one that I can connect to. Where it’s in an apartment complex in the hood. Not a big ass house in a good neighborhood.
Interesting how this series and Final Destination have their fifth installment not only rival some of the initial movies in their respective franchise after a dissapointing fourth film, but they also literally tie in with their originals! Pretty cool!
I love your coverage of the movies. I usually don't watch podcasts but you guys are just so into it that I get into it. I wish there were more clips of what you're talking about but I understand that is a very hard editing process. Keep up the insanely good work guys! Be good people!
47:10 to answer your question James, yes you guys forgot the scene where the demon fully takes possession of jesse. When he goes to the basement the second time to search for his dog and gets ambushed by the demon.
This movie single handedly revolutionized ghost communication! Instead of lugging around devices that cost hundreds of dollars, just carry a game of Simon. 😀
I'm soooo glad to hear that people hold the marked ones in such high regard...because I love this movie...it's sooooo fucking entertaining....and a great movie to watch
it's been years since i've seen this movie and don't remember a ton of it but there's a moment that's always stuck with me. when the guys are in ana's apartment, jesse is standing facing a mirror and he turns around to talk to hector but his reflection doesn't move and it just stares at him and it was sO CREEPY! and i love how they don't call attention to it in the movie! subtle scares like that are my favorite
This one was definitely the one that terrified me the most. Being raised by old school catholic Mexicans superstitions about demons and witches was ingrained very early in my life. This definitely triggered those fears that I had at a young age
I remember when this movie came out. My family and I were excited. Because this movie takes place in our hometown. Love the podcast keep up the great work 😊
Literally just watched the theatrical cut last night and the scene you described with them going into a church and checking the bathroom stalls was not in there so it sounds like u guys watched an alternate cut.
Great video guys, it's always nice to find people that obsess over horror as much as yourself. Marked Ones is definitely top-tier PA alongside the first and third movies. I'm so sorry that you'll suffer through Ghost Dimension after this. I could go on at length about how terrible it is but I'll wait til that podcast.
While Hispanic and Latinx are often used interchangeably they actually mean two different things. Being Latinx refers to geography location. It’s used to signify that a person is from or a descended from ppl from Latin America. Hispanic on the other hand refers to Language. Ppl who speak Spanish and/or are from a country that primarily speaks Spanish. Hispanic = Spanish-speaking origin Latinx = Latin American origin
That said, it does come down a little to personal preference for a couple people. I have a friend from Latin America who generally prefers to be called Hispanic, for example. Same for his whole family, they simply prefer to be called Hispanic.
32:57 when that happened I was getting strong Chronicle vibes. Like as if this was some kind of superhero origin story for him. And getting Chronicle vibes from a Paranormal Activity movie was a GREAT sign. Had it gone the direction of these powers somehow being a foil to the other demon I wouldn't have been against it. But yeah that "Chronicle" Moment, had me thinking The Marked Ones was about to go in another direction entirely lol. Definitely one of the best of the bunch.
So glad you guys covered this one. It’s definitely the best of the series along with the original. And thanks for saying you can skip 4, totally validates the fact that I only own 1-3 in a set and then The Marked Ones 😂 4 is trash. But Ghost Dimension is gonna be tough, I could barely finish it.
Aye james! When hector and jessie and marisol are in the church summoning the demon and nothing happens after they say the chant you can totally see someone or something just step out of the darkness and appear in the background where the church mirrors are. The figure just stands there for a good while and then disappears! It was watching them. You should go back and see it. It totally freaked me out when I first saw it. It's a good attention to detail and adds so much creepiness to that scene.
The extended version is a completely differant movie. There are so many great and important scenes not in the theatrical version I think that might be why that RT score is so low. The extended version is a solid 75-82% in my opinion.
This was probably my favorite of ALL of the films (even the first one), simply because it shakes up the formula and feels a lot more natural than most of the dialogue in the rest of the series. The ending of Ghost Dimension is probably the best part of the film, to be honest with you. It was a bit disappointing in format (I won't spoil it for you), but the ending straight-up gave me the creeps!
_Paranormal Activity 5_ wasn't a _Paranormal Activity_ movie or even a spin-off; it was an unrelated movie about a coven of witches. The studio wanted to release a _PA_ movie on Halloween, but they didn't have one that would be ready in time, so they checked their vault of unreleased movies (most studios have lots collecting dust) for one that is similar and rebranded it as _PA5_ ; studios do this sometimes. To be fair, they at least brought Molly Ephraim back to shoot that one scene where she exposited the connection to the franchise, which is still more than J.J. Abrams did to connect _-10 Cloverfield Lane-_ _The Cellar_ to _Cloverfield_ (the only connection was a website they made afterwards, there was _nothing_ in the movie to connect it).
This is my favorite entry of the series. It’s so much fun and honestly could have been set in New Mexico (tho that wouldn’t have made sense with the rest of the story.) the characters remind me so much of my own family members. The shirt that says powered by frijoles is easily something any one of my friends would wear. It’s such a genuine portrayal of Latinx families and I adore it.
Arturo is Coco from Mayans M.C.! He really is a good actor. His character on there is amazing IMO. He has a dark sense of humor but he goes to great lengths to protect his friends and family. Definitely one of my favorites.
Hey guys! Puerto Rican here. You guys are technically right in using hispanic. The main distinctions between hispanic and latino are the langauje spoken and the continent. For example: Brazilians are latinos but not hispanic (they do not speak spanish), whereas Spaniards are hispanic but not latinos (they speak spanish but are european) It goes deeper than that but I just gave you the tl;dr of it
I have seen all of the Paranormal Activity movies in theaters, yes even Ghost Dimension 👻 Theatrically, Marked Ones is a great experience, but I wish I had seen the extended version in the theater. The church scene is one of the scariest scenes in any PA movie. I was so freaked out when they went into the dark church bathroom. There’s something unsettling about being in a church at night when no one else is around. Add the demonic element and it’s terrifying.
Hispanic is a generalization honestly I never understood why anyone got mad since no one can always know what ethnicity we are by glance and considering you can't ask what kind of community since no one's there I would hope no one would get mad about you calling it a Hispanic area as we called it the same 🤷♂️
I once had a long stand of hair in my eye and can confirm, it doesn't feel all that nice to pull it out. It's a very strange sensation at leaves your eye feeling itchy and irritated. But I guess thats better than having a hair that about an inch and a half stuck in your eye.

The Marked ones actually had me spooked when i saw it in theaters when dude fell off the roof and hit the car. Spooked me lol
Hispanic = Spanish-speaking origin
Latinx = Latin American origin
Justice for the marked ones! ❤It's not genius but it's a pretty entertaining movie!
In marked ones when he’s going through the time Machine he goes into the garage of the 4th one 💗
I listened to the first 4 of this series audio only so I thought they were actually in a pool lol
"I think were dead meat, real dead meat"
This is my favorite entry of the series. It’s so much fun and honestly could have been set in New Mexico (tho that wouldn’t have made sense with the rest of the story.) the characters remind me so much of my own family members.
The shirt that says powered by frijoles is easily something any one of my friends would wear. It’s such a genuine portrayal of Latinx families and I adore it.
I'm so glad you guys actually covered this movie I remember watching g this and theater and enjoying the crap out of the movie!
Arturo is Coco from Mayans M.C.! He really is a good actor. His character on there is amazing IMO. He has a dark sense of humor but he goes to great lengths to protect his friends and family. Definitely one of my favorites.
I’m so happy that this part is finally released
Glad I'm not the only one who felt emotional over that little scene of Hector realizing Jessie isnt the same anymore
Hey guys! Puerto Rican here. You guys are technically right in using hispanic. The main distinctions between hispanic and latino are the langauje spoken and the continent. For example: Brazilians are latinos but not hispanic (they do not speak spanish), whereas Spaniards are hispanic but not latinos (they speak spanish but are european)
It goes deeper than that but I just gave you the tl;dr of it
Y’all forgot about when Oscar shows Jesse the bite and a water effect flows under Oscar’s bite mark
For mexicans you can use Hispanic/Latinx/ or Chicano. Sidenote: Mexicans take spirits very seriously.
*Latino
Hispanic is a generalization honestly I never understood why anyone got mad since no one can always know what ethnicity we are by glance and considering you can't ask what kind of community since no one's there I would hope no one would get mad about you calling it a Hispanic area as we called it the same 🤷♂️
Yeah thats true, ppl get worked up for no reason and waste their energy on that
Screw the demonic entity attacking this family. The most supernatural thing is making a perfect circle WITH TAPE none the less
I once had a long stand of hair in my eye and can confirm, it doesn't feel all that nice to pull it out. It's a very strange sensation at leaves your eye feeling itchy and irritated. But I guess thats better than having a hair that about an inch and a half stuck in your eye.
Marked Ones is my favorite in the whole franchise
I live for this. Literally dealing with TOO much bs and this takes me out of my dismal reality
This one is totally the best one of the series...hated the lil doggo being hurt.
Lucky he wasn’t really being hurt, but he was really scared and the noises he was making were so painful :(
@@hkazu63 I always skip animal parts in horror movies...ugh. I hate it!
