You are a guy after my own heart. I am a 56 year old woman I was in my 20s during the grunge phase and my husband was in a grunge band. I relate to you more than I do most people. To me grunge is deep and cryptic and, we were just learning how to express our pain because mental health was not good then and it wasn’t OK to talk about. To me grunge has the most heartfelt messages usually about what not to do and how life can tear you down. But it can be inspiring!! If I lived across the pond, we could be best friends! Love, love, love your grunge reactions thank you for going down that rabbit hole❤❤
Honestly, contrasting Chris singing Stay With Me Baby and then listening to Cochise by Audioslave will give you a really comprehensive grounding of what Chris was capable of. Very seriously, he was quite probably in the top 10 voices of rock and metal of all time. Very few people can sing like silky heaven and then do tortured screams and long AF notes like he could.

This song is grungy goodness from the get go! Chris Cornell can not be replaced. I was fortunate enough to see him on his "Higher Truth" solo tour. The man was a musical beast. He played alone for hours with only ONE other artist accompanying him at any time. He literally moved you with his voice. I loved that show so much even though I was seated in the nose-bleed seats, so when I found out Soundgarden was going to be performing at my fave rock festival, I was elated. the reason chris cornell is consider one of the best singers of all time is bc of: "slaves and bulldozers" and "beyond the wheel" with soundgarden and "say hello to heaven" (and "hunger strike" maybe???) with temple of the dogs. those are his opus-magnus when it comes to vocal range. until you listen to those performances you wont get why ppl speak of him the way they do. of course he has many many more really good songs but when it comes to vocal range, those are the songs you should listen.

Soundgarden is up there for me of my favorites and Chris Cornell had an incredible voice. He also has a very extensive body of work to go through with Soundgarden, Audioslave and not to mention his incredible solo career. And he was an a very nice guy and we were all devastated when he died in 2017. Next up check out Rusty cage by Soundgarden. Johnny cash himseld covered it !
"birth ritual" is my fav soundgarden song, because his vocals are INSANE in it. they only tried to play it once, and chris wasn't happy w his performance. that tells you what a HIGH level of intensity he's performing at on that recording. his voice sounds like a high tension cable ready to snap at any second, and he continues to put pressure on it and push it further as the song goes along. GLORIOUS.
👏👏👏👏 I'm SO glad you got to this song so you can see what all the fuss is about Chris Cornell! Between Soundgarden and Audioslave, and his solo stuff, there are tons of great songs that really showcase his talent and diversity. You literally can't go wrong with ANY song off of this album, though (Badmotorfinger).
If you love this, you will go bonkers over Spoonman. Chris’s voice is insane this, the band is fantastic and Artiss the Spoonman’s spoons are phenomenal!!!
More like Layne is 1 small rung under Chris. Chris evolved throughout his music career, his vocal abilities seen from the late 80s to the 2010s is nothing more than dynamic power. Layne Staleys vocals are very powerful, but his vocal ability is unmatched to Chris' ability, If layne was around today he would not be singing as good as you think.
I tend to agree with you, and Layne is my favorite singer by a long shot. However, just to be fair, Chris couldn't do with his voice later on what he could when he was young either.
My take on the Layne , Chris debate is this……. Chris has a classic metal high end vocals, he is probably technically better than Layne, HOWEVER Layne has a phenomenal dynamic voice. Layne”s vocals define the “grunge” vocal sound that has been emulated more than any other. Within the grunge genre my vote goes to Layne
@kikivon3501 The only reason i give my vote to Chris is that he advanced throughout his music career experimenting with all different types of singing styles whereas Layne never had the chance to. How I wish Layne would've progressed through the 2000s
I was in my 20's in the 90's. Why don't you go thru these outstanding bands in the order they came out it'll give you the same perspective we had growing up with it, and it'll give you a good mix of the "grunge"bands at least. OF course take fan requests, but it will let you evolve as a fan as they evolve as artist. Just a thought it's the closest you can get to being there at the time all this was going down, and believe me man it was incredible to be young and coming of age with the greatest music as the theme of our lives IMHO of course. Others might disagree but everything from pop to rap, to blues, and of course grunge and rock in general were fresh and new , and don't forget we had all the classics at our disposal to, 60's , 70's ,80's, too... just a thought, cheers.
Mind blowing to think that the grunge scene in Seattle all kind of happened at once. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and many more were all playing in clubs almost every weekend while I was in college at the University of Washington. Each weekend we'd go out and be in a club with about 100 people and watch these bands get bigger and bigger. Mind blowing! All of these bands from Seattle
Great reaction! You have to react to "Jesus Christ Pose" and "Slaves & Bulldozers" (studio versions)...Chris Cornell: absurd, extraterrestrial, immortal...Soundgarden: best band of the "Grunge" Generation and one of the best Rock/Metal of all time!!! They have a lot of influence simply from the best Heavy Metal band of all time: sacred and immortal Black Sabbath!!! Greetings from Brazil!!!
No matter what anyone says, music today wouldn't be what it is without Nirvana. They were literally the most influential band of the Grunge era. That's not to take away from the others, they were all good, but Nirvana broke down all the barriers. It's crazy to know that some members of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam all knew each other and played together. Eddie Vedder's collab with Chris in Temple Of The Dog is utterly amazing. Two legends together.
Alot of the time people put Nirvana down just because they were the most successful airplay wise but they had some great tunes. But as a musician Alice in Chains, Soundgarden & Pearl Jam are just more entertaining to listen to. I'd even put Stone Temple Pilots above Nirvana in that department. Great reaction dude 🤙
I was in high school from 92 to 95, and it makes me so happy to hear you fall in love with the music that meant so much to me. It was a truly special time, and you certainly seem like you belong. Enjoy the journey!
This song is also in 7/4 tike which makes it extra nice. 😊 Andrew Wood had the best voice from all the 'grunge artists'. He was the first to go (die). He sang for Mother Love Bone. Please check out them. They were the GENESIS of the grunge scene. You should listen to 'Hunger Strike' - a duet with Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell - by 'Temple of the Dog'
MollyGrungeBoy Welcome to the world of Soungarden another group that will hit u hard in the soul, and stir ur emotions. One of my favorite's as well.... thank u for sharing ur journey with us
I was a teen in the 90s and I absolutely believe we had the best of rock/metal/grunge. All the inspiration from the classics with a dirtier grit to them. I still get the chills listening to Chris Cornell. AH!
I think he’s the best grunge singers and one of the greatest singers of all time. His range is beyond comprehension on Slaves And Bulldozers. Matt Cameron is a phenomenal (and underrated) drummer as well.
Imagine being on a college campus in the fall of 1991 and seeing Smells Like Teen Spirit Debut on MTV. After being bludgeoned by hair metal throughout the 80s, it was such an amazing and much needed contrast… And then about a year later Dirt dropped. That album still sounds so crisp and amazing today (over 30 years later).
Anything Chris Cornell is gonna be awesome. Layne and Chris's voices raised me through middle school and high school. I love Kurt and Eddie but there was just something else about Layne and Chris' voices that appealed to me so much more. Fell on Black Days, Rusty Cage and Blow Up the Outside would be my suggestions.
Grunge is "White Guy Blues", lol. That's objectively the best comparison to another musical style from the riffs and bass lines to the lyrics and vocals, and Blues is a major influence on the early grunge bands. It's blues music with hard-rock instrumentation. If you're coming from the world of Hip Hop, which also is derived from Blues, that's going to be an easy transition for you.
In my opinion Chris Cornell was one of the best singers that ever lived and he will always be missed!
Agreed
RIP Chris 💔
Honestly not sure I’m over the fact that he’s no longer with us.
Yep..him and Layne as well were awesome...so sad they are no longer with us.

Best vocalist in history for me.
Beyond the wheel live in Germany 1991. Is ´amazing´! Say hello to heaven live 1990. RIP Chris.
You're going to love it! Thick and epic jam!
Dude was the first GUY asked to sing the James Bond Theme in the movie.
Audioslave next! Gotta check them out too.. never a bad song! ❤rip Chris..we miss you 😢
the reason chris cornell is consider one of the best singers of all time is bc of: "slaves and bulldozers" and "beyond the wheel" with soundgarden and "say hello to heaven" (and "hunger strike" maybe???) with temple of the dogs. those are his opus-magnus when it comes to vocal range. until you listen to those performances you wont get why ppl speak of him the way they do. of course he has many many more really good songs but when it comes to vocal range, those are the songs you should listen.
Dude! This is a good one to learn on guitar. Drop D 😉
I'm a 52 year old head banging grandma. This was the best music in my opinion.
I LOVE IT!!! CHRIS CORNELL WILL NEVER BE OUTSHINED, GORGEOUS VOCALS AND BEAUTIFUL MAN!! MAYBE NEXT THE BAND TEMPLE OF THE DOG AND THE SONG " HUNGER STRIKE " YOU GET CHRIS CORNELL AND EDDIE VEDDER SINGING IN DUET!! IT'S INCREDIBLE BUT I SOON AS YOU REACT TO IT, FANS FOCUS AND CHRIS AND NOT MUCH ON EDDIE EVEN THOUGH EDDIE DID INCREDIBLE JOB!! AWESOME REACTION MOLLYBOY!!!
I ♥️ GRUNGE!! MY FAVORITE ERA OF MUSIC. LAYNE STALEY AND MIKE FREAKIN MCCREADY IN THE BAND MAD SEASON!! 😊🩷🤘✌️🔥
I'M FEELING OUTSHINED! OUTSHINED!! OUTSHINED!! OUTSHINED!! YEAAAAAAA!! 😊🩷🔥🤘✌️ THE AWESOME DRUMMER MATT CAMERON IS DRUMMER FOR PEARL JAM SINCE 1998 TILL NOW.
Prepare....to be OUTSHINED OUTSHINED OUTSHINEDDDDDD YEAH....💚🤍🧡
Soundgarden is up there for me of my favorites and Chris Cornell had an incredible voice. He also has a very extensive body of work to go through with Soundgarden, Audioslave and not to mention his incredible solo career. And he was an a very nice guy and we were all devastated when he died in 2017. Next up check out Rusty cage by Soundgarden. Johnny cash himseld covered it !
First time i heard Soundgarden i thoufmght to myself "Self, these guys are the Sabbath babies."
Turns out they were huge Sabbath fans.
Indeed. I loved watching them at Download in 2012 just before Black Sabbath. Great combo.
Room 1000 Years Wide sounded like Sabbath, MC5 and The Stooges did a song. My favorite Soundgarden song
They cover Into the Void if that tells you anything.
GLORIOUS.
Definitely looking forward to this. Their best, IMO.
Flashbacks from playing Road Rash on PS1 in the mid 90's are coming 🙈
If you love this, you will go bonkers over Spoonman. Chris’s voice is insane this, the band is fantastic and Artiss the Spoonman’s spoons are phenomenal!!!
As good as outshined is, you've got to do Slaves and Bulldozers.
Agreed! Gotta be heard!❤
My favourite Soundgarden song is "Tighter and Tighter"
It's gorgeous
Chris is just 1 small rung below Layne as a vocal God on the musical ladder of angels❤
Where is Mike Patton on this ladder? Just asking…
No one's a better rock singer than Chris, AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.
Another great band that shows the blurred lines between metal and the better grunge bands
Behold the legacy of Andrew Wood. Two great bands, and who can forget the first time they heard this? Immortal. RIP Wood RIP Cornell
Chris the literal voice of his Entire Generation
Yes!! Go all the way back to the beginning...Loud Love, Ugly Truth, Hands All Over!
My musical life changed in the early ‘90’s when grunge hit the scene and it’s still my favorite genre!
Thanx 🖤🖤💌🇨🇦
Chris... Audio slave,
Temple of the dog
Layne...AIC,
Mad Season
Chris made so many people happy and feel different emotions just with his little vocal chords
MollyGrungeBoy Welcome to the world of Soungarden another group that will hit u hard in the soul, and stir ur emotions. One of my favorite's as well.... thank u for sharing ur journey with us
That whole few years of the early nineties was a completely different vibe from anything that was previously played happy I got to experience it
I was a teen in the 90s and I absolutely believe we had the best of rock/metal/grunge.
He's also in a band called Temple of the Dog. You absolutely MUST listen to Hunger Strike. It features Eddie Vedder on vocals with Chris Cornell.
I was 14 when this came out, and I was hooked. Soundgarden, Pantera, Megadeth, Metallica, Bodycount(Ice-T), Pearl Jam, and Nirvana were the 90s faves.
Great track, also heard in the movie 'True Romance' just as a side note.
Brings back memories of heavy chains, fast motorcycles and curvy roads. There will never be another Road Rash.
