Im going to message you the fabric i just got at the shop. Also i screamed when i saw the dress. I NEED to make this dress so badly. Im pretty sure ive bought this pattern!

Love the way the dress and the spider web corset come together as one outfit but would equally be a nice dress to wear with out corset as everyday go shopping dress
Right?! It's such a versatile pattern, I love it!! (and works well with the corset belt OR just the normal self-fabric belt, OR any other belt you might already own)
I made the underbust corset on your recommendation (and learned lots of new things!) and it's part of my Hallowe'en costume! I'm a pirate this year. I freehanded the skirt out of some curtain offcuts, with a super deep waistband and a long hitch. I did make Ora Lin's pirate shirt ages ago but in white so for Hallowe'en I'll be wearing a black dress underneath to serve as both shirt and petticoat. Your projects are always super inspiring and I love your enthusiasm. Thanks again!
When I was working at Glasto a few years ago I watched a woman very like you testing the trapeze set up. I took a photo as she looked so completely under control all on her own at the top. Don't under estimate artist like this lady, she is a star. Birdy

Yea, I suppose it would be! It just feels a bit unwieldy to be doing a pattern this big with (for my personal tastes), so I might use the tape measure to make a little cardboard gauge of the same width! And yes, we're trying to keep it realistic around here - if you're newer to the channel, I pretty much always keep it down to earth and show some of my mistakes (not all of them, because then we'd be here all day, and this does need to be entertaining, after all, but there are plenty to choose from 🤣)

I was a pattern tester for this dress, I had such fun making it and giving feedback but used what turned out to be the worst fabric! I really need to give it another go in something more wearable (polycotton bed covers are on the No list now)
Absolutely love it and your editing is immaculate. Thank you for sharing the sewing process and putting together this amazing Halloween historybounding outfit🧡🧡🧡
"Nobody wants a Moebius ruffle -- just imagine all that hemming!" may be the funniest math joke ever. Love the finished dress! Especially how well it goes with the waspie and those boots!
Ooh! It turned out beautifully! (Looks very comfy to wear too!) I just finished my Halloween dress yesterday - it's a spooky 1950/60s inspired sheath dress made out of a black and white windowpane print with little spiderwebs, worn with a beaded spider broach, naturally.
Shannon, I've been binge watching all your videos which are exciting and adventurous to me. Your filming and editing is flawless and I never hear any outside noises in you films. A BIG THANK YOU GOES TO YOU.
It came out very well! And the waspy adds a lovely contrast. Ora’s patterns seem ver accessible, I can’t wait to try them when I get back into sewing. I’m officially in the internship portion of my classes as of yesterday and am very happy with my mentor so far. Thank you for sharing ❤
Such a pretty dress! I could almost hear my grandmother speaking in her broken Italian accent, "remember a clean ironing plate is as inportant as a well working sewing machine!" LOL Love your style, Shannon. 👍🫶👍
I really love that top part of the dress I have a top right now that’s got a yoke like that and I think it’s flattering and I like it’s modest and then this pattern has those gorgeous sleeves that are full and kind of fun but they aren’t so big that they will not be overwhelming on my smallish person. And let’s not forget the piece the irresistible bit which is the cuffs. I am going to make it as a dress for sure, but I’m also going to make it into a shirt and Edwardian it up a bit. . .Victorian it up a bit? Anyway, there will be lace. Perhaps pintucks. It’s really got such wonderful opportunities to hack a bit. It’s the most I’d like the pattern in a long time, and I love your dress, because that color and the linen is kind of perfect. I love linen way to much because I have an affordable cotton budget.
Yes, there are so many modifications that can be made to this pattern! The base pattern is fairly simple, to make it more accessible and less daunting to more intermediate level sewists, but if you want to go crazy with pintucks and ruffles and gathers and insertion lace, it's super easy to do so... I even saw one person make a breast-feeding modification to it which was super cool!
I have this pattern and mostly completed the mock-up, then decided I hated the fabric I had for it, and once I got fabric I was on to another project. I'll definitely have to go back and complete it
9:46 I was so excited to get myself a magnet seam guide and then I found out that my sewing machine is mostly plastic. Lol So the tape thing is perfect for me!
LOL the fabric is much less red than it shows up in some of the shots - it's more orange than the fire-truck red of Deadpool, but I still think it'd be a nice outfit to wear together!
Looks great! The mention of adding layers under a costume reminded me of my mum making costumes that could be worn over a winter coat. Some of the other kids just opened their coats at neighbours' doors like flashers. Such a Quebec experience 😂
I love your videos. They really help me to keep finding joy in sewing. Plus you always have really good advice on improving sewing techniques, so thank you!!
I’d never seen the “burrito” method of shoulder seaming! That’s been one of my main struggles in sewing up my own dresses. It’s surprisingly intuitive! Definitely giving it a try ❤
What a gorgeous result yet again!! And this reminded me that I've been meaning to add Ora Lin's Sophie Dress on my to do list. Argh too many project ideas, not enough time. The top part would also make a gorgeous blouse on its own tucked in a skirt if one didn't have enough fabric to make the full dress... so many possibilities!!
Wow I just had a look at a certain mustard linen rayon blend I received in the mail yesterday from a certain fabric bundle *wink* and just realized I have double the amount I was expecting to receive?!? What?!? This was very generous and a pleasant surprise! Although a full dress in mustard yellow might be a tiny bit bold for my taste 😆
LOL was it generosity, or was it an error on my part? We'll never know, but either way I'm so glad that you go the bundle safely and that you're enjoying the fabric - definitely send photos of the full mustard dress on Instagram 😉😜
Thats a very cute dress. Love the combination with the corset and the colors you chose. You mentioned you needed some different fabric for your pockets and I think the fabric you chose is very cute too! (And when I was a dressmaker apprentice we learned that in some cases its even recommended to use a different fabric and only add a facing in the fashion fabric - like you did :D) I was thinking about sewing that dress when Ora Lin showed it on their channel but totally forgot about it. Now I re-added it to my "to sew" list.
Thank you! I, too, am very happy with the whole outfit and the colors, and the pattern is super cute! And yes, I think that there are definitely plenty of fashion fabrics that wouldn't, actually, make suitable pocket fabric (especially giant pockets like this, made for holding actual, realistic amounts of items)... hope you are able to sew a Sophie dress for yourself sometime soon!
It's so cute! And I got my fabric bundle today, which is amazing! I'm a little sad I didn't get the plaid that was in the photo, but that purple wool is better than I expected. And the little extras!
I'm not big on Halloween but I totally love how this dress pairs off with the spiderweb corset. I bet it would look beautiful with a purple one as well and maybe even a green one. Perfect for the upcoming holiday season. I have to say you sure do know how to rock burnt sienna. The color just looks tacky on me. I'm still working on my corset. I used the sandwich method that you used and got it all together oy to discover its too big. Last minute I decided to use a larger pattern because I figured it's easier to take away than it is to add. So after ripping out my seams and cutting everything down I realized I accidentally cut two of the scales upside-down 🤦🏼♀️ lesson of the day, don't do anything when you are hangry.. That will be my project today. Plus washing and ironing my fabric for my corquelicot skirt. Which I hope to start working on this weekend.
It really is a great color combination (and I was mildly surprised that it looked ok on me, because usually anything with reddish tones makes my skin look like a 🍅), but the combo with the black corset is just *chef's kiss* and I'm super happy with it! Best of luck on all your upcoming sewing!!
@@ShannonMakes I feel you there. I'm blond too with similsr skin tones to you. Anything in the orange family makes my skin look like a tomato 🍅 as well.
I saw this pattern a little while ago and the moment I saw it, I knew I had to make it one day! I'm waiting a bit until I feel a liiiiitle more confident in my sewing skills, but it is definitely a project I want to tackle in the next few months. I'll definitely refer back to this video and Ora Lin's tutorial when I do! I love your final product. Great video :)
You're right, that is really stinking cute. I felt your pain with the pockets too, on my recent project I ended up having to redo a pocket three times because I kept making the exact same construction mistake! Don't sew tired, kids, it's not worth it XD
Woah, this is the second time you've come out with a video using a pattern I'd just used and been desperately wishing for a clearer tutorial 😭😂 (the first was a V9288 ). I finished this dress about 10 days ago for a Sophie Hatter cosplay and for some reason really struggled with the pattern. I also made a mistake with the sleeve cuffs simply because I was relying too heavily on the instructions (of which there weren't many for the cuffs). Yours looks amazing and I love the contrasting fabric! Will definitely be giving this video another watch before I make this dress again. 🥰
My seam allowance is always just from the needle til the side of the foot. Yeah, it sometimes gets a little annoying with some fabrics, but it's just easier for me than having a bigger seam allowance and then kind of having two places to keep an eye on at once while sewing 🤷
Well unfortunately I don’t have a ruler that’s the exact same distance as the distance from the needle to the side of my foot. And it was quicker for me to just use the ruler ahead and add a piece of tape, then trying to make the SAs that exact distance!
I don't use French seams very often. They're fine for sheer fabrics but I always find I wind up with godawful lumps when I have seam junctions (like armpits, and gods help me if there were gussets involved) and I'm not sure what the solution is. And I get kind of brain-melty when contemplating pocketses and French seams, brain no brain. That turned out really cute! And oh my that's a lot of yardage! Heh, I bet it would work in the delightfully awful plaid flannels I've been collecting lately...
@ShannonMakes I definitely will!! Thankfully my husband takes her to playgroup on saturday mornings, and then on Monday and Tuesday I'll have a good 4 hours each day to work on them! :)
Your dress turned out great love the color. We have the same purple t-shirt that you are wearing in this video. 😄 I also have the same Pfaff sewing machine. Mine is not working so well.
The dress is really lovely! A perfect fall colour! I think I will have to pick up this pattern it has similar lines to my favourite, and long gone, flannel robe! The robe was longer but that's an easy adjustment as well as button plackets. I'm beginning to think that your a bad influence lol!
@@ShannonMakes lol as long as you’re meeting your goals!! I’m also going to have to admit it doesn’t take much when dealing with sewing and old favourites!
Im sure you know about the trend of turning quilts into a coat. What if it was a quilt into a cloak. I want to do that now. The videos i see usually try use thrifted or used quilts.
I am using a PDF pattern right now that has all the sizes and is supposed to be color-coded as well, but wasn't print in color. It's the first time I've used one and I spent hours taping and then re-taping it because I taped it horizontally and things didn't line up vertically. So had to redo it all vertically. They were all 6 sheets wide, but some were 9 long, which was very unwieldy. I ended up cutting out the pieces and then taping them together. I am not sure if I'll ever use another PDF pattern.
Well it was either a poorly designed pattern, or your technique needs tweaking, because I use almost exclusively PDF patterns (from reputable companies), and have never had a problem!
@@ShannonMakes absolutely! It was my first try. My daughter found the pattern and printed it out. Once I got past the issues with assembly, it's been fine. I'm an amateur sewist at best, but am trying to expand my knowledge and skills. I appreciate your videos and have learned a few things from you.
Well for Halloween, I am going to be a Goth. Oh wait!!!! That isn't a costume, its normal me. Thank you for sharing this sewing journey and it was fun to watch. Overall it turned out well and looks good on you. I would have torn out and sewn the sleeve plackets but that is just me. Nice touch to use coordinating fabric. It would be nice to make such a dress in full length and create a lower class frontier woman vibe. Strangely if "Little House on the Prairie" hadn't been a hit on TV, it wouldn't have registered into American consciousness. The appeal of the dress is that it was so controversial in its time. Until I can get back to work part time, my projects sit around at the fully planned stage waiting for my being able to afford fabric.
I don't love the hole the placket creates (letting cold breezes in) and especially with such a long cuff, I don't like the look either, but the beauty of sewing is that we can all do our own special tweaks and touches!!
@@ShannonMakes I assumed that you adjusted the sleeve to suit yourself. I sometimes use small snaps on sleeve plackets. I tend to be anal-retentive about details and come off as critical when it wasn't my intention. As to tweaks and customizations in our projects, I think that is my favorite part; anything from Frankensteining pattern pieces to doing the construction differently. Years ago my kids were groaning about how I don't follow the easy instructions on easy beginner patterns. I did a lot of haute sewing techniques and would line dresses and skirts. I do far more of it these days because sewing is my primary source of entertainment. After a project it's back to finding things to do.
oh my gosh, so true about "back to finding things to do" - I am like that with books too. I love reading series, because then I don't have to worry about what I'm going to read next; it's already planned out for me!!
@@ShannonMakes my income is limited as I'm on American disability but my adult sons don't require that I pay much for my place in their home, so I can buy something for a project or set aside money for a big one.
I often don't even worry about matching my thread closely (plz see my cotton candy threads inside my green 4-way jumpsuit🤣), but in this case, I bought the thread when I bought the yardage!
I am feeling the sudden urge to make this dress for myself! I have metres of a knit fabric almost the exact shade of Sophie's dress in Howl's moving castle and I wonder if this pattern is compatible with kits/strechy fabrics. But it's maybe a little ambitious since I literally never used knits in my life...
I think it would definitely be possible, but I also agree that it might be a bit ambitious for first time working with knits - on the one hand, at least it's several metres, so if you mess up, you could re-cut, but if you're one who gets easily frustrated and throws projects in time-out corners to collect dust, then maybe stick to non-knits? All about knowing yourself!!
@@ShannonMakes I'll definitely try something less complex for my first dip into knit fabrics, especially since i am very prone to toss the frustrating projects into the "Bermuda Drawer" where they disappear from the surface of the Earth. Also, I'm taking sewing classes to learn how to sew knits, just to have all chances on my side.
Thanks for your comment! I agree 54" chest is not inclusive enough. I'm working on expanding my size range for future patterns and making an extended range of some of my existing patterns including the Sophie dress.
All right, you've seen mine, now show me yours: what is YOUR Halloween outfit going to look like?!
Im going to message you the fabric i just got at the shop. Also i screamed when i saw the dress. I NEED to make this dress so badly. Im pretty sure ive bought this pattern!

Patternmakers who publish layered PDF patterns (print only the size(s) you want) are my heroes.
This one isn't layered, it's just in various packs (because the layered function requires the paid version of Adobe on most computers, and Ora wanted this to be as accessible as possible), but I agree that the layered function is truly magnificent!!
It goes so beautifully with the spiderweb corset! Perfect for Halloween, but also just some great fall/spooky/dark academia vibes.
I totally agree! Thank you!!

I freehanded the skirt out of some curtain offcuts, with a super deep waistband and a long hitch. Darling dress! Lovely color and fabric. Well done!!
Thank you! 😊
The width of your fiberglass tape measure is also a good seam gauge! I’m so glad you include your mistakes along with the successes. So many TH-camrs don’t show theirs, but you know they make them, too. The dress came out so cute!
Yea, I suppose it would be! It just feels a bit unwieldy to be doing a pattern this big with (for my personal tastes), so I might use the tape measure to make a little cardboard gauge of the same width!

The burrito method is one I learned recently when sewing my own undies. Pandemic skills I learned and appreciate.

This was so much fun to watch! Your videography just gets better and better every video. Happy Halloween!
Thanks so much!! 🎥🧡🖤
While this dress is not my typical style, I would still love to make this so I could look like Sophie.
You're right, that is really stinking cute. I felt your pain with the pockets too, on my recent project I ended up having to redo a pocket three times because I kept making the exact same construction mistake! Don't sew tired, kids, it's not worth it XD
Sew, sew true... most of my mistakes are made after dark 🤣
Now we need an Houls corgy cosplay to accessorize XD
SO true!
Awesome and Canelle for the win! ❤😂❤
TOTALLY!!
Spooktacular results! Your hand stitching is beautiful. Mine is very chicken foot looking. I will try to practice more. Maybe LOL
ok, but can we talk about how amazing that description of your stitching is?! I love that!
Oh this turned out amazing, love it! :D
Thank you!! 🎃
Brilliant!
Thank you!! ☺️☺️
i totally plan to make this dress...just need to find the perfect fabric(s)!
It’s a great pattern!
Super cute ❤
Thank you! 😊
That's wild, we must be on similar wave lengths! ....maybe next time, I'll get my video out BEFORE you use the pattern 🤣
Very pretty 😀
Thank you! ☺️☺️
I think you were reading my mind, I actually just finished a orange Sophie dress with white bone maple leaf buttons.
WOW, that's very impressive!!!
@@ShannonMakes I have a bunch of super cool photos we took yesterday! I'm so glad I made it.
Heh, I bet it would work in the delightfully awful plaid flannels I've been collecting lately...
thank you! 🧡🖤🧡 definitely give it a "go" with the plaids! 😜
❤❤Love it!!
thank you! 🖤🧡🖤
This is absolutely gorgeous, Shannon!! I need to get moving on my halloween costume lol its maybe 1/3 done 😬 and my daughter's is 1/2 done lol
You can do it!! Put on some good YT videos in the background, as crafting buddies, and switch on Sewing Beast Mode!
Mine is not working so well.
oh, that's hilarious! Mine was thrifted in Nova Scotia, but turns out I love the color!! And I'm sorry your PFAFF isn't working well, I adore mine!
ALL YOUR FAULT!! I bought the pattern and currently taping it up! Lol. Lady Godiva nibbled on the corner of my front facing piece 0.0
LOLLLL love it!!
The dress is really lovely! A perfect fall colour! I think I will have to pick up this pattern it has similar lines to my favourite, and long gone, flannel robe! The robe was longer but that's an easy adjustment as well as button plackets.
I'm beginning to think that your a bad influence lol!
Thank you! 😊I strive to be the best bad influence 🤣🤣
@@ShannonMakes lol as long as you’re meeting your goals!! I’m also going to have to admit it doesn’t take much when dealing with sewing and old favourites!
I love the ruler as seam allowance idea. I have a gauge. I wonder why that didn’t occur to me the last time I traced out a pattern?
Love it!
Thanks!!
@@ShannonMakes all you need to do now is make a lil’Calcifer. ;)
Im mid 70s and my mother and grandmother both had masking tape on their machines.
PS; I would not use a magnetic seam guide myself if my machine was of the moderny type that incorporates computery-stuff… :P
That's why I put the note on-screen to be careful when using it around modern machines ;-)
Im sure you know about the trend of turning quilts into a coat. What if it was a quilt into a cloak. I want to do that now. The videos i see usually try use thrifted or used quilts.
LOL yea I have had my eye out for a quilt that would be suitable for doing this!
@@ShannonMakes Awesome. Im excited to see what you do hope you find one soon.
stinking cute
Thank you!!
I love your low cut vest! Do you have a pattern for it?
No I don't, sorry!
❤❤❤
🖤🧡🖤🧡
Do you have a hard time finding thread that matches thrifted fabric? Yours always looks so good!
I often don't even worry about matching my thread closely (plz see my cotton candy threads inside my green 4-way jumpsuit🤣), but in this case, I bought the thread when I bought the yardage!
mmm I want those buttons
😃❤❤❤
(Please do not reply, you are a busy women!) , Beautiful dress and it looks so good on you!
I've just received 5 yards of terracotta linen that I had intended for something else but this video may be the devil on my shoulder instead 😅😅
If that’s not my role in life, I don’t know what is 🤣🤣🤣😈😈
It's so sad that the pattern only goes to a 54-inch chest, I wouldn't call that size-inclusive!
Thanks for your comment! I agree 54" chest is not inclusive enough. I'm working on expanding my size range for future patterns and making an extended range of some of my existing patterns including the Sophie dress.
@@Ora_Lin I look forward to those updates!
