Sarah, I absolutely love your videos. I watch them on repeat and always get something new each time. I petsit a lot and it is like 5 star vacations in beautiful homes with sweet pets. I have pared down my packing to a tiny backpack thanks to your sage advice. Its fun to see how much i can eliminate and still feel like I have enough. I stopped wearing makeup 10 years ago and I’m fine with it. I do bring a set of Velcro rollers for my hair and I bring a few colors of nail polish and cotton and remover. Im particularly fond of turquoise, coral and an off white pink. Im down to 2 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, a sweatshirt, socks, sneakers, flipflops, and my denim jacket. It is enough. Wow, that is a magic backpack, I would never think that so many items would fit in there. Amazing. I would need a full size suitcase and I would still run out of space.
You are The Boss!! Amazing! I have watched a lot of packing videos and you are the first with radical, practical ideas and information that I can put into practice. I am about to start packing in the next few days for a 2 1/2 mth trip with my husband (we took early retirement and are travelling as much as we can, and still maintaining life back at home). Last fall we did carry on and back pack only, for 3mths. I was proud of us but I feel I could do better to make it nicer for me/us. It's not just so a person can say, I only travel with x amount. I want it to make travel easier. We have a lot of flights and moves we're making in our first month in Turkey. Less to carry and manage makes it so much easier. Thank you SO much!
We bring pillows too! I thought maybe that was excessive. Nice to see someone packing light and also bringing a pillow. We're not light packers at the moment, but maybe someday... 🌺 Heidi
Fantastic video, thank you! I am actually amazed at how much you fit into that bag. I really appreciated the reminder of how great silk clothing is, for thermal regulation, compactness and featherlight weight. So many other great tips too!
Regarding a scarf, it can warm your neck if it's cold, protect your head or shoulders from the sun, your head from the rain, your clothes when you sit somewhere. It can be carried tied to your bag or around your waist. If you wash it, make sure you chose one that dries fast. So, takes little space and can be used for lots of stuff.
I started packing my own travel-sized pillow because I can't sleep with hotel pillows. I also use it on my lap during flights. It's been a game-changer!
I have learned so much from you! I love silk and merino. I have now weighed my items before I pack. You are an inspiration. Thank you so much for what you share.
Silk and Merino wool are my favorites, too. I had a mid priced pack that seemed to check all the boxes... until the zipper broke. Since then I've carried Osprey, REI, and like brands, intended for actual backpackers. They're light weight and very sturdy. Once, all the overhead bins were full, and I had to gate check my carry-on. I was so glad that I had a rugged, Osprey ultra-light pack.
Osprey is my go-to for backpacking but can get heavy. If you check out thru-hiker blogs and videos, you’ll find lots of cottage brands producing wildly popular bags that weigh mere ounces yet durable enough for 2000k mile trips on rough trails! And many are custom made to your specs, with your choice of belts, straps, pockets, padding, volume, etc. Just search for ultralight backpack and pay attention to reviews by hikers on the AT (Appalachian Trail), PCT (Pacific Crest Trail), CDT (Continental Divide Trail), etc - especially vids and blogs when they review gear AFTER they’ve finished for brutal feedback.
I have to admit that I am a fan of the crumpler brand luggage - I have had a suitcase and backpacks for about 10+ years now and they are still going strong - I gave my husband a backpack and he loves it... its not the lightest or the cheapest and it may not be available everywhere but boy do they last.
I like to use those memory foam pillows with a bump to support the neck. I bought one and cut it to the width of my head only (I'm a side sleeper, so measuring from back of head to nose, plus an inch: 10"). I shove it in a gallon ziplock to compress it. Takes up about 6 cubic inches.
I enjoy your practical packing videos. Thanks, Sarah. ☺️❤️✈️ Update two years later: I am watching yet again for reminders how to pack lighter, carry-on only for the 2nd time, while staying stylish. 😊❤️
Can you add the names of everything and where to buy them? Ex: The backpack, the toiletries and the different bags, toothbrush, charger, the underwear, the variety of clothing manufacturers, , the size of that scarf, what type of pillow case/ down pillow, etc . Thank you for all the travel and info you share with us.
Just found you and subbed immediately! I cannot believe how many clothes you managed to pack in that one cube. I’m a big fan of Eileen Fisher as well, love your style, and will be binge-ing all your previous videos. Very much wanting to do lightweight travel. Thank you!
Ill share a tip with the viewers who like to carry camera gear and also have to bring along a cpap machine. This is a real conundrum for me for packing light. While in italy 3 years ago, i figured out that my cpap bag doubles great as a camera bag for daily outings! Lenses and bodies fit in there since its all padded and theres room to carry little souvenirs. I noticed that nobody was interested in pickpocketing a cpap bag! I also wore a scarf with hidden zip pocket where i kept all my valuables. I simply turned the cpap bag with zipper facing my body and it was fabulous. The only thing is packing your camera gear properly inside your backpack which you can do with travel towels, sweater etc. tiny prime lenses can go in tube socks. Its not fancy but it worked well for me!
Thanks for sharing about packing silk items! Now I know how to make more room. Also, I can envision how many different outfits you can make from your selections. Great job👍🏻
I’m hoping to go to Scotland in June, and I am challenging myself to go as light as possible with just a backpack. I got a Tom Bihn Synik 22 liter. I’m taking silk and merino wool shirts, 2 long sleeve button shirts, cashmere cardigan, light fleece zip sweater/jacket, nylon windbreaker jacket. My only outer bottom is a Macabi trekking skirt (with silk short johns and knee socks underneath if cold). Eagle Creek folding day bag. Small Baggallini shoulder bag/waist pack for my sketching/watercolor supplies. Purse is my ScotteVest featherweight model travel vest so my valuables are in inner pockets and on my body at all times. My backpack weighs 10 lbs. I appreciate all the tips you give us, Sarah.
@@arlenealennox3136 brilliant. And you know of course it will be 80* since you're ready for chilly weather 🤣. You'll have the best time!!! Keep us posted 😊
I have the brand "taskin" packing cubes that do the same as your Tom bihn one with the double sides, I use it the same way. I loved them so much I just bought another set. they also have a patented piece of vinyl behind the zipper so the ykk zipper doesn't eat the fabric. they're seriously awesome.
I highly recommended powdered toothpaste for travel. I've used the eco-dent brand for years and the 2 oz containers last a long time. You could put it in something even smaller for travel to save space.
Hi Sarah, awesome information & very well presented. I travel quite a bit as well & you have given me a lot of ideas of stuff to look for to streamline my current gear. I'm very curious about 2 things though. How do you wash all of your silk items while you're on the road & how well does silk breathe? I've only owned one silk shirt & it was like wearing a really expensive plastic bag for how well air flowed through it. Is it more a function of the silk thread itself or the weave or something else? How has your experience been with using mostly silk? Thanks for any info & cheers from a fellow traveler!
Years ago, my daughter in law gave me a cashmere poncho. That, along with my silk and linen finds from thrift stores, will get me to Hawaii next week. Thanks for your tips!
Sarah, few months ago someone mentioned using Osprey bags, and you asked which kind... if you are interested, Maggi Fuchs also packs very light and she just put out a video about her progression. She is now using an Osprey Arcane Duffel... part of their Arcane series. It is 30 liters and pretty light. I wish it were a tad smaller, more underseat size, because it looks well made. Happy travels, Lynne
That Osprey bag is brilliant! I bought one after seeing Maggi’s video about it. It opens suitcase style, so easy to pack, but quite lightweight. Very important on flights with a maximum combined weight of 7kg for carry on and personal item, which is often the case within and between New Zealand & Australia
@@anneinauckland2318 My husband and I bought them after one trip with our backpacks, because we had "stuff" spread all over, and the suitcase style just keeps everything together and easier to deal with. We love them! And I agree, the weight matters. We used them on Lufthansa and Condor, with a PC bag as our shared underseat personal item. But for RyanAir, we have Fjellraven Kånken Laptop 13s, which are small, but we used one, shared, for an overnight trip, so I think it will work for European flights with Ryan Air. And, I am planning to use it this summer as my personal item next to the Osprey. So I might have the "perfect for us" system now, maybe?! 😂🤞🏻
One of the most common sense packing videos I've seen. I appreciate your clothing choices which are stylish and modest. I was feeling pretty good about being able to use a carry on only, but after watching this video I'm going to TRY to pare down to a backpack only.

Hi, I really like your video, they are very educational for a new traveler. The only thing is they the volume is very low. I have checked my settings. Has anyone else ever had that issue? Thank you.
Love your videos! I'm watching this one for probably the third time just getting ready for a trip to Europe. It has kind of a magician vibe like pulling rabbits out of a hat! I will never come close to the way you do it but I'm getting better. Thank you!
Love all the natural fibers in your wardrobe! I'm going to look into silk pants. I've been wanting to add a pair of pants to my travel wardrobe. 🌺 Heidi
And if you're on a budget, loads of Eileen Fisher can be found at thrift stores. So beautifully made and durable. I love taking as little as possible. Going to bring a down pillow on my next trip abroad.💖
Always love your videos Sarah. I have had success with Lume deodorant. It took a few days of use before it started working well but now 1 ounce lasts me about a month. My favorite scent is Warm Vanilla; my husband’s is Silver Spruce. Also always travel with a Swiss Army Card. TSA friendly scissors, tweezers, nail file, magnifying glass, toothpick, pen, and tiny screwdriver. All in the size of about 3 or 4 credit cards stacked. Best wishes and looking forward to more of your videos.
Because of my work I always have to have a laptop with me. With cords, it just adds a ton of extra weight. Yet I've managed to keep my stuff under 8 kg even though I sometimes include a yoga mat. As you said, the secret is having an ultralight backpack. Mine is Gossamer Gear. Its' front mesh pocket is especially handy when going from cold (my home country Finland) to a warmer climate. I can stuff any outer layer in it without a fuss
Thanks for taking time to make this very helpful video! Could we have the links for the amazon products. I would highly recommend swapping out the cloth masks for N95 masks and let them sit in the sun to disinfect once used.
I have loved your packing tips for years! Thanks for sharing your new inexpensive backpack find. This one looks like it has good organization instead of some others I've tried with just one big compartment. I have one question - What size is your Tom Bihn cafe bag? Is it a medium or a large?
Thanks for the recommendation on the super light underwear. I keep the total of my luggage under 8 kilos (roughly 17.6 lbs) but I do use a slightly larger backpack or a roller. Having a bag that's so completely full means I need to tetris everything any time I want to grab something. Just way too annoying for me. Plus gives me some space to dump some of the things I'd have in my personal item on a plane but that I don't need to have on my walking around wherever I'm visiting.
I continue to be a huge fan of a large scarf, Pashmina, Turkish Towel, whatever you call it, for travelling and everyday use. It's such a highly underrated item, in my opinion! ☺️❤️✈️🏡 Vast price points, too, for every budget, Target, Amazon, Teema, etc.!
Yes to a large scarf! I love my Coolibar UPF 50+ rectangular shawl. Sun protection while driving, warm at night, and I've even used it as a sunshade (one edge rolled up in window) and room darkener (draped over a too-bright window).
@@heatherframpton9693 If you get one, I hope you like it as much as I do! I've never tried using it as a towel, so I'm currently considering your method of a turkish towel if I can find one I love that's lightweight and a decent UPF. Nice to have options!
Just love it, Sarah!! I am going to try to invest in some of those “used” clothes. My husband and I go on a lot of birding trips so of course, we look like we are on a safari. Really like the silk tops and bottoms. Thanks for the information and inspiration:)
Thanks for sharing all your insights, I have been wanting to try silk but was hesitant. Your review has given me more confidence to find some some silk garments. I have also heard good things about alpaca being similar to wool. Have you ever tried clothing made of alpaca?
I love your packing videos!!! I don't see anything about packing for mixed/likely rainy weather. I'm from a dry climate. If it rains we stay inside or grab a junky umbrella! Traveling is different though. You live in a rainy destination so this should be up your alley! We're doing Dublin and Amsterdam in September.
I dunno if this comment is too late to help you. I've been to both Ireland and Amsterdam, during summer and shoulder season. I also live in a wet climate, similar to Sarah (I think it's actually wetter where I live than where she does lol). It's standard for me to wear waterproof shoes and have a raincoat, but I rarely bring an umbrella. If we really need one, we can buy a cheap one on vacation. I'd say the best advice for traveling in Ireland and Amsterdam in September is to layer. And wear real shoes.
ohhh my god thank you for the toothbrush recommendation i'm so stoked to buy one of my own, i saw they have a yellow one which is my favorite color!!!! never been so excited to buy a toothbrush in my life lmao
Excellent video, best of the many I’ve watched for carryon-only travel!! ❤️ And SO wonderful to see adult clothing ideas rather than relying on tech hiking gear (cargo pants!) or nothing but black separates with an ethnic scarf…. I’m a longtime hiker, but sure don’t want to wear that stuff into a museum or restaurant every day for weeks. 😂
I agree! It's been a long-time joke in the travel industry that travelers with all the expensive "travel clothes" look like they are going on safari, even in Paris or Rome :)
Excellent video full of helpful information. I am getting ready for a short domestic trip and am revising my wardrobe, finding silk and lighter weight bottom options. Thanks!
I neeeeeded this! My purse weighs more than 15 pounds 🙄😥😯. Thank u Sarah n dad! The scarf and shoes ideas helped me the most ....also leggings thank u!
I always love to see your videos. - I learn something new each time. Questions - what is a good substitute for Merino wool which is too scratchy for me? And what if one is of an age where sleeveless and short sleeve tops look terrible? I only feel comfortable with ¾ sleeve tops. Do you have recommendations for this el ght
right off the bat - I didn't know Sonicare made a travel toothbrush. Now I don't have to sacrifice my dental hygiene. I have peridontal issues, and was afraid skipping the sonicare for 3 weeks would not be a good idea. Thank You!
Wow! Just discovered you via this video (thanks, YT algorithm!) and subscribed. I'm impressed by how many clothes fit in that packing cube. Sadly, I am allergic to wool - even cashmere and merino, which apparently some people can tolerate better than "regular" wool. And silk just makes me sweat. :-( But I will check out linen.

H Borders can you share source for your tiny tools?
I got my Swiss Army Card from Victorinox.
Agree Lume
walking is looking amazing and you're so slim Snow! That black patterned dress with the band around the midriff is sooooo flattering! Love it.
I would highly recommend swapping out the cloth masks for N95 masks and let them sit in the sun to disinfect once used.
this is astonishing!!!
This is such a good point. When I travel with a bag that has a little room to spare it's like a breath of fresh air!
@@bellaluce7088 thanks for the brand recommendation! I just looked that up. Beautiful scarves, etc... Putting at least one on my wish list. 😁
@@heatherframpton9693 If you get one, I hope you like it as much as I do! I've never tried using it as a towel, so I'm currently considering your method of a turkish towel if I can find one I love that's lightweight and a decent UPF. Nice to have options!
Love this, can you please name the little jewellery pouch please …..great vid
Great video! My only concern is, how to pack everything back if you are asked to open the back pack at he security.
This minimal lifestyle is addictive! My concern is the wrinkles in washable silk…
Thank you!!🤍🤍🤍
Just love it, Sarah!! I am going to try to invest in some of those “used” clothes. My husband and I go on a lot of birding trips so of course, we look like we are on a safari. Really like the silk tops and bottoms. Thanks for the information and inspiration:)
Great advice! Thanks again!
Fabulous content. Thanks so much.
Great video!! ❤
Great video! Amazing to see how many things you were able to carry in such small bags. What do you do about the wrinkles in your silk and linen items?
ohhh my god thank you for the toothbrush recommendation i'm so stoked to buy one of my own, i saw they have a yellow one which is my favorite color!!!! never been so excited to buy a toothbrush in my life lmao
This was extremely. helpful! thank you!
@@SarahMurdochadventures Hi will this fit as a personal bag for jet blue and sprite
Yes if you don’t overstuff it. Dimensione are 1-2” taller then 18” but easy enough o squish.
Excellent video full of helpful information. I am getting ready for a short domestic trip and am revising my wardrobe, finding silk and lighter weight bottom options. Thanks!
Very Nice Packing tips! Thank You very Much!
Great video!! So many awesome tops and pants
Um, get over it. No one really notices what you wear so long as you’re neat.
right off the bat - I didn't know Sonicare made a travel toothbrush. Now I don't have to sacrifice my dental hygiene. I have peridontal issues, and was afraid skipping the sonicare for 3 weeks would not be a good idea. Thank You!
Loved you video... looking for a link to your poncho Thanks
That was so fun! Thanks!
I just got that toothbrush! It’s awesome!
love, love, love thrive mascara! the black and white scarf is fantastic -- details?
Good tips Wish you would include links to the products like your pillow, the shampoo and conditioner, silk poncho to dress up tshirts.
Loved your clothing assistance. Wondering about what do you pack for cooler weather, say April in Vienna?
You have the best ideas
So happy I found your videos! Thanks! Where does the large cotton scarf come from?
How do those silk shirts and pants hold up in the heat? Don’t they stick to you and show any sweating if hiking?
Amazing
