If you haven't heard Tool Sweat yet, you NEED to. It's 1st on Tool's 1st album because if'n you ain't ready to Sweat, just leave the Tool in the box, boy. FYI, aliens are simply fallen angels/devils in disguise. The Rapture will happen very soon. Everything he said to watch for, we're seeing. He said when you see it, REJOICE & fear NOT. Seeing all this means he is VERY close. Come quickly Lord Jesus
There's way more played out songs from Tool, but yes this did get a ton of radio play, thankfully. Can't even imagine a song this long and this complex on the radio today 😅
I'm pretty sure watching that thing is how they come up with the meters for their songs. It is so irregular, but also has a pattern if you watch long enough
This song has something like 47 meter changes, with 12 time signatures, but instead of just being noise for the sake of noise, it is a nuanced, emotionally devastating and powerful song. There are other bands that achieve this, but none as consistently as Tool. To balance the emotion and the technical prowess is rare. Often it is one or the other.
Time signature and Meter are basically the same thing. I like to think of TOOL in meter more than signatures. Because of the way they add phrases or beats in between measures so that polyrhythms may align or Maynard can have an extra word etc…you can tell they are writing by feel, not by counting. They make statements that are concise like sentences and when people outside the band come in and chop it up you have to say well look there is a bar of 3/4 and then one of 7 and one of 5 and then there is an extra beat so Maynard can finish his line….. thats interesting but its NOT what the band is doing when they are writing. It reminds me a lot of Djembe playing in West Africa. Especially who ever is soloing at the moment. They split up the groove into polyrhythms by playing different times over the main rhythm of the Dun Dun’s. But they do not think about numbers. They are patterns that make phrases but MOST importantly you practice so that they become FEELINGS and then you express your feelings. They do not think about time and the grand masters are the greatest drummers on Earth. Its the same with TOOL. They may use some numerology in the initial construction of the songs but by the time they have the tunes practiced, you take off the training wheels and just rip it up time feel, execution and sonic creativity.
You couldn't tell me this wasn't in their top 5 when I was listening 15 years ago now there's so many other songs that I find myself liking just as much or more that I used to think weren't as good. I was so happy this got put on guitar hero over so many other good choices. It's weird maybe it depends on which songs you heard first, this was one of the first songs I listened to back then when a friend showed me who they were so maybe that has something to do with it.
@@greggjohnson5634 It was the first TOOL song that I really fell in love with and it was my favorite until Pneuma came along. Then I finally got around to exploring more of their earlier work and now I'm a huge fan.

Ok, I discovered Tool about a year ago. In the nineties, I was listening to other stuff and being totally ignorant, I thought they were a metal group. I based it on how they looked. SMH now. I was blown away when I finally listened to them. I’m a child of the 70’s and love hard rock of that era. At age 66, I’m a big fan of their musicality, the vocals, everything!
I'm assuming you're around my age (42) I got into tool when I moved from an "urban" school to the burbs. Had to adapt to a totally different vibe and try and be open minded. That's when one of my friends introduced me to tool (and other rock/metal). 25+ years later I'm still a massive tool fan. TLDR; welcome to the club 😊
I'm so glad you found them and have fallen in love with their incredibly amazing music!! My dad is 63 and didn't like ANY of my music growing up, but he's a huge Zeppelin fan (as am I of course!), so I played Tool for him once and he instantly loved them and knows every single lyric now! He even happens to live in the same town as Maynard now and has met him a couple of times! I'm so jealous! 🤣
Well then, welcome to the Tool army Ruth! I’ve been a member ever since I saw them live on their very first tour in the early 90’s. I was 17-18 and I’m now nearly 49.
What!?! After all those other Tool songs you’re finally doing Schism!? My mind is blown. But dood, I’m really looking forward to your reaction to Third Eye, the studio version. Whenever that happens, I want to be there see you transform…
First time I saw them live was I believe 9/20/01 in Cleveland OH. I'm pretty sure it was the 20th, at least it's in my head that it was 9 days after, either way it was in that ballpark. It was surreal looking out over the crowd after days of not being sure if the show was even going to happen at that point or not. Not to mention what had just happened. It was a great way to start getting back to something like normal. It goes without saying that the show was phenomenal.
I remember that because it had you play Parabola/Schism/Vicarious back to back. Kicked my 12 year old ass. 😂 The only set in the game I failed in Hard Mode.
This song is hypnotic and trippy as fuck. This record came out during a time in my life when I was absolutely immersed in LSD, and this song rapidly became not only one of my favourites from this record, but eventually one of my favourite Tool tunes of all time.
This is the song that actually got me into ToOL, I remember me and my older brother were watching MTV together when I was a teen and this music video would come on and I was just amazed by how eerie the video was. This song stuck with me for ever and then one day much later in life is when I revisited their music and THEN I became a blown out Tool fan.
For me, I love this particular song because it really builds a repetitive, frustrated tension based on the subject matter. It seems to be about a relationship slowly falling apart, both in communication and feeling, and that comes out in the repetitive, aggressive way it's composed and in Maynard's voice. It's almost like he's recounting how it happened over and over in his head, repeating to himself that he can make it work again and trying to come to terns with things. It doesn't have the crazy moments like some other Tool songs, but I feel that the entire song is it's own 'crazy moment' because it paints in both music, tone, and tempo such a distinct, strong story and state of emotion.
I remember first hearing on the radio as the lead off single for this album. It was mind blowing. You could tell that TOOL had made an evolution in their music and the album was going to be something special. Then the radio station here in Oklahoma (100.5 KATT before it got bought out), played the full album the Sunday before it was released. Suspicions confirmed: It was something special. Great reaction.
It's been what... just about 30 years now or something... I still find myself strumming the guitar riff of this with finger taps while doing stuff at work constantly. This song is infectous.
This is one of my favorite songs, not just by Tool, but overall. Thanks for reacting to it. Once you've had a chance to listen to all of the individual songs on the album, I'd recommend listing to the whole album 2 times: once in order track listing order, so you can see how the musical themes presented in the first few help to build the album as released and once in "Fibonacci Order" (AKA the "Holy Gift"), so you can have your mind totally blown.
My friends every time back in the day. Me:"Check this song out." Them:"It's ok." Me, staring at them as the song progresses. Them, their head bobbing:"It could grow me." Me, all Pedro Pascal smile in the passenger seat staring as they start headbanging. Them:"It was ok." A couple days later... Them, all ravenous like they haven't eaten:"Hey man I gotta hear that song again. I couldn't get it out of my head!!" Days later... Us, driving down the road, jamming and screaming at the top of our lungs, album on repeat. Sometimes this process took months but once they got it they were hooked. Reminds me of some of your reviews. Love it.😂
This is for you, or anyone reading this who has gone through a heartbreaking split up, or who are going through tough times with a significant other. Or if you can’t stop thinking about that someone you grew apart from: turn on Schism with your headphones on, turn up the volume and think about them, and really pay attention to the lyrics. It might take a couple listens, but this song will surely resonate even stronger with everyone.
I was in basic training (Army) 20 years ago and we were allowed phone calls on certain nights. I would call my friends and ask them to play certain TOOL songs over the phone. Because I didn’t want to talk. I just wanted to hear greatness.
The cool thing with all of these tool videos is knowing what polo is in for as the song progresses and having the moment of "oh you like that? Well check this part where they turn it up a notch"
I remember waiting at Zia records in line in Phoenix at midnight of Tuesday am when they started the sale of the CD. Same with 10,000 days my cousin who recently passed and I would do this. Love you Joe.
This was the song that made me a Tool fan. I remember the first time I heard it... sitting in a Taco Bell parking lot and I was completely hooked from the first listen
The song is mainly about themselves. They had a bit of a falling out with each other after the aenima album and the record label legal troubles. They basically forced themselves to get back together, and they created this album. The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it, Finding beauty in the dissonance!!! Between supposed brothers
Thi song does something strange as you keep on hearing it and it changes into a complex work of genius. You won’t catch it one first listen or even third but you’ll notice over time you stop skipping over it to get to the higher energy songs. Almost 30 years since I first heard it and it has morphed so many times. I think that’s the genius about Schism.
I love that the whole song builds to the laser-focused, almost wardrum-like beat. The syncopation, cadence, rhythm... And that's not even counting the lyrics.
Tool is unique. The only band I know that every one of their songs sound better and better with each listen. Most bands if you listen over and over you get tired of it. Not Tool. With every listen you hear something new and you grow to appreciate the song more and more. Everyone of their songs is like that. Not saying you didn't like this one, but listen a few more times and you will think it's incredible.
This is one of those Tool songs that grow with you once you get familiar with it. This is actually one of their greatest songs. Gotta give a couple listen.
Please don’t forget Opiate… the song and the album… it’s the first thing I ever heard from Tool and many of the songs are live recordings. I love Tool, but my favorites are still Opiate and Undertow just like Bleach is my favorite from Nirvana still. Little more raw and messy, but those are qualities I like and they do it so well! Just as good as the other stuff, but different.
I’ve been on an Opiate bender lately and have listened to it straight through every day for the last month or so. I agree it’s so raw, but sooo damn powerful! Jerk-off is my jam, and I can’t wait for Polo to hear Maynard play God! 🔥
@@itsayswithoutgoing9571 I agree!! I love Jerk Off! I first heard it when it came out and I still have Opiate benders too! I just know Polo is going to love it! lol 🔥🤘
And this was Justin's riff. The two of them are equally credited as to the amount of ideas and writing there is. As well as Danny of course...u know the greatest drummer on the planet
This song is a brutal skeleton. It's bones are tribal rhythm and math rock complexity. It's tight skin is a blissful harmony. Melody rides in the back seat on this one. It's a grower!
I think Schism is one of those songs that needs a couple of plays before it gets good(er). Granted, most Tool songs need more plays but I feel that liking Schism after one listen is rarer than The Pot for example.
I've had this song as my ringtone forever. Everytime it rings it creates a schism. It totally disrupts whatever else is going on. The irony is the device leads to communicating. Ah TOOL, you 4 genius bastards. I'm 50/50 on them being from this planet. Especially the Octopus, " H "
I don't know how to play an instrument, but I absolutely love the intro where it sounds like the base is literally doing a rolling "R" sound. CHILLS EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
This is your first reaction video that I have watched. Your raw reaction to the elemental diversity of Tool brought tears to my eyes. As a mixed race person who enjoys Tool it is beautiful to see you embrace the music. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
The amount of different time signatures in this song are ridiculous even how they overlap between drum, guitar and bass playing in diff time is amazing. Which is why this is one of my favorite Tool songs
Adam, Justin, and Danny complement Maynard’s vocal cadence very well, or vice-versa. Collectively, they build crescendos and sink into diminuendos very smoothly.
You are one of the most authentic and best Tool Reactors. Your facial expression alone is worth its weight in gold. You feel it and I love it. Best regards from Germany
Yooooo, those swinging sticks in the back are perfect for tool reactions. Get a couple more of those perpetual motion thingies on shelves. It'll look like metronomes for Danny.
My first time hearing Tool was Sober when it first aired on mtv. I was hooked right away by that bass opening. I have always enjoyed their music but never really, I mean really got it consciously till about a year ago when I started to practice bass and tool was my number one. It took awhile to realize why their music is tough to learn. I am grateful that I didn't miss this train!!!
One can lose the sense of meaning while waiting for the larger melodies to engross the listener He compares the disintegration of communication between people - lovers, brothers, etc. it doesn’t matter - to the falling of the tower of Babylon. It’s a spiritual experience i get from this band’s every track that i havne’t found anywhere else
I bought the swinging sticks from amazon and they came in the mail today. Got it set up as a sensory item for work as I work in community services/mental health. Cheers for the recommendation. 👌
The blank face for the last 10 seconds of the song told so much ... almost disbelief that you were hearing that and trying to keel up with danny gettin TF .. OFF. LOVE YOUR REACTS ❤.
I'm so stoked that you love Tool!! They are in a tie for my favorite all-time band, tying with Pink Floyd. I would love to see/hear your reaction to Pink Floyd. I think your first one should be Comfortably Numb....epic song! Their music style is much like Tool, just more mellow, yet still intense. I hope you decide to give Pink Floyd a try. Until then, thanks for all the Tool content. 😊
I love that you took the time to make the "Tool to everyone else" VS. the "Tool vs. Tool" distinction. I feel like this was important.... Great stuff as always, keep on keepin' on... ;)
I know the pieces fit 'Cause I watched them fall away Mildewed and smouldering Fundamental differing Pure intention juxtaposed Will set two lovers' souls in motion Disintegrating as it goes Testing our communication. The light that fueled our fire then Has burned a hole between us so We cannot seem to reach an end Crippling our communication. I know the pieces fit 'Cause I watched them tumble down No fault, none to blame It doesn't mean I don't desire To point the finger, blame the other Watch the temple topple over To bring the pieces back together Rediscover communication. The poetry that comes from The squaring off between And the circling is worth it Finding beauty in the dissonance. There was a time that the pieces fit But I watched them fall away Mildewed and smouldering Strangled by our coveting I've done the math enough to know The dangers of our second guessing Doomed to crumble unless we grow And strengthen our communication. Cold silence has A tendency to Atrophy any Sense of compassion. Between supposed lovers Between supposed lovers I know the pieces fit I know the pieces fit ~"Schism"~
Saw them finally... In this tour in Dallas, lead singer had his head shaved, covered in black costume paint. The difference was his EARS are NOT COVERED with theactrical paint. (Circles of EARS) I remember the dance floor parted when this song appeared! AMAZING!
This shits spiritual. Btw, The time signature is in 12/8 time which can also be called 6/4 time. But we count it in eight notes because makes more sense in this song. Go ahead count to 12 while listening to where it repeats. This is how time signatures work. You’ll be able to pick them out after a while. Poly rhythm means more than one rhythm at one time. For example the guitar could be playing a riff in 4/4 time and the drums could be playing in 3/4 which would would cause both lines to drift away from each other and come back together to meet after…you guessed it…12 counts altogether. Danny will play two rhythms at once on the drums alone at times.
First TOOL song I ever heard. Was going through a break-up at the time and I have to say, this song hit me like a brick in my face. Still my favorite of theirs for how meaningful and introspective it is, especially when compared to most pop music break-up songs.
I remember from the concert during the extended intermission they had tall silver painted figures walk through in A shape bobbing their heads. The out of world visuals in combination with such music will forever occupy my memory.
Just saw your Bone basketball story, I'm 45 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland. Who knows, there may have been a time you heard earlier tool blasting from my car and wondered what's wrong with that white dude. Love your channel, takes me back to hearing all these for the first time.
Schism is perfection the melody is solid thru out the beginning has feel of peace in the beginning vocals then the fire and then back to soft of opening melody it’s very solid ❤
Whatever that moving fixture u have behind you if u watch this video back it goes perfectly with the song. It almost put me in a trance. What is that and where do I get it?
They played this one on the radio a LOT back when alternative rock stations were still a big thing. This one, The Pot and Sober might have gotten the most air play on radio. Somebody help me out with other Tool tracks that were on the radio a lot.
This song has my favorite line of all the Tool songs “Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion BETWEEN SUPPOSED LOVERS!” Women stop giving your man the cold shoulder when your mad at them, it’s just chips away.
6:15 to 6:30 in the forerunner on 10 repeat, or 5:45 to 6:30, but that 6:16 breakdown absolutely KILLS!!! Over and over and over! (In this video its 10:00 to 10:45, especially10:25)

Because I didn’t want to talk. I just wanted to hear greatness.
One of the deepest songs EVER!!! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
That little toy you have back there complements the music so well
The cool thing with all of these tool videos is knowing what polo is in for as the song progresses and having the moment of "oh you like that? Well check this part where they turn it up a notch"
I’m always like … “BUT WAIT THERE’S MOREEEEEEE!”
I love to see people of all nationalities digging Tool. Their music is a trip, I love that you appreciate good music, rock on Polo.
You should check out a live Schism performance. They add a fast interlude that's fire.
Actually, they have several songs that they extend live.
This was the first single off of this album. I remember waiting on mtv for it to premiere and it was absolutely worth it.
I had to be class that day so I set my VCR timer (remember those?) to record it.
@@jrod112278 and going to record stores to buy physical copies on release day! Hell, I went to L5P in Atlanta to buy the vinyl when it came out.
@@chadcross8008 I paid to reserve my physical copy at Hastings prior to purchasing my copy.
Same for me, my first TOOL love!
Yep then watching the music video on MTV
This was my hook too. First time I heard them and I immediately had to hear more.
Hearing this song for the first time is something you could never forget.
My Taco Bell manager got me into Tool.
One of my absolute favorite Tool songs. Really just one of my favorite songs altogether.
Danny’s drum parts at the end of every song are so good it’s ridiculous
The song is mainly about themselves. They had a bit of a falling out with each other after the aenima album and the record label legal troubles. They basically forced themselves to get back together, and they created this album. The poetry that comes from the squaring off between and the circling is worth it, Finding beauty in the dissonance!!! Between supposed brothers
This song was one to grow on me and it’s now one of my favourites. A deserved Grammy. A tidy and complete composition with all members shining.
Adams riff right as the bridge starts is one of the most heaviest, awesome riffs ever written. It’s simple yet so awesome
Top 10 tool songs (in no particular order):
Schism
Rosetta Stoned
Right in Two
Eulogy
Vicarious
Descending
Pneuma
Lateralus
Parabola
Reflection
Thi song does something strange as you keep on hearing it and it changes into a complex work of genius. You won’t catch it one first listen or even third but you’ll notice over time you stop skipping over it to get to the higher energy songs. Almost 30 years since I first heard it and it has morphed so many times. I think that’s the genius about Schism.
This song just goes deeper and deeper as it unfolds. nice quality
So happy you got to it!!! Heck yes!! The melody will grow on you. It took awhile for me but once it clicked, it fit
That opening riff is actually the bass guitar and it is THE bass line that haunts Guitar Center stores everywhere.
I can't imagine this bass riff behind stairway to heaven. 😂
@@lobotomizedjellyfish2171 thanks to Stranger Things it’s currently paired with “Master of Puppets”.
Godspeed brother. Schism what enlisted me in the Army. I'm a lifer. Uniform on
This is one of those Tool songs that grow with you once you get familiar with it. This is actually one of their greatest songs. Gotta give a couple listen.
This is one of those songs that the more you listen to, the more you love it. It’s easily top 10 for me
Please don’t forget Opiate… the song and the album… it’s the first thing I ever heard from Tool and many of the songs are live recordings.
In my case, one listen to this song 20 years ago was all I needed. I will never forget that day. Then Prison Sex and Sober closed the deal!
It is Toolsday 🤙🤘 that's what's up. I remember back in school when this was on the radio.
💚💚💚💚💚
"I KNOW the pieces fit, cause I WATCHED them fall away"
This was like the original Tool song for my age group. People who knew this band 20 years ago found them with this song
“Music is the hidden arithmetical exercise of a mind unconscious that it is calculating.”
― Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz
I don't know how to play an instrument, but I absolutely love the intro where it sounds like the base is literally doing a rolling "R" sound. CHILLS EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
This one of the only Tool songs i've ever heard on the radio, it's that good.
"Finding Beauty in the Dissonance." might be my favorite combination of words ever.
This is your first reaction video that I have watched. Your raw reaction to the elemental diversity of Tool brought tears to my eyes. As a mixed race person who enjoys Tool it is beautiful to see you embrace the music. Thank you for sharing this with the world.
Just so you know, there's a lot of people from every race in the world that like tool they aren't just something only white people listen to
The amount of different time signatures in this song are ridiculous even how they overlap between drum, guitar and bass playing in diff time is amazing.
Tool is epic. Such amazing musicianship and progressive melody. They are def in my Top 5 all time
One can lose the sense of meaning while waiting for the larger melodies to engross the listener He compares the disintegration of communication between people - lovers, brothers, etc. it doesn’t matter - to the falling of the tower of Babylon. It’s a spiritual experience i get from this band’s every track that i havne’t found anywhere else
This song won a grammy and probably most successful song (often part of guitar hero video game too)
"Beautifully aggressive" is a perfect description!
“Beautifully aggressive”-a perfect description❣️ They are just beyond everything 🤯
Great honest review! One of the greatest basslines ever composed by Justin or anyone outside of Primus.
Para mi, la banda más auténtica del mundo.
Nadie suena como ellos.
There is a reason Tool play this live most times. I play guitar and I at least enjoy playing it. :)
Great stuff as always, keep on keepin' on... ;)
The key part of tool is, a new journey on every track
Thats why they are my favorite band (along with metallica) of all time
I'm a tool fan but I was born in Memphis, so I love the blues. I love u Polo, u are genuine ill subscribe.
I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed
Will set two lovers' souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes
Testing our communication.
The light that fueled our fire then
Has burned a hole between us so
We cannot seem to reach an end
Crippling our communication.
I know the pieces fit
'Cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame
It doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other
Watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together
Rediscover communication.
The poetry that comes from
The squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance.
There was a time that the pieces fit
But I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smouldering
Strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know
The dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow
And strengthen our communication.
Cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion.
Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
~"Schism"~
In this song Justin and the lyrics are of another planet!
Saw them finally...
In this tour in Dallas, lead singer had his head shaved, covered in black costume paint.
The difference was his EARS are NOT COVERED with theactrical paint. (Circles of EARS)
I remember the dance floor parted when this song appeared!
My favorite Tool's song, masterpiece
I remember from the concert during the extended intermission they had tall silver painted figures walk through in A shape bobbing their heads. The out of world visuals in combination with such music will forever occupy my memory.
The gentleman and scholar on the bass guitar Justin Chancellor with that intro 👌
Just saw your Bone basketball story, I'm 45 and grew up on the east side of Cleveland. Who knows, there may have been a time you heard earlier tool blasting from my car and wondered what's wrong with that white dude. Love your channel, takes me back to hearing all these for the first time.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song is kind of in its own special Tool category. An absolutely brilliant behemoth.
I think this will grow on you even more.
I don’t hear anything but your pendulum explain everything about the song ! Thank you for adding that 👍🏻
Bro! How have you gone this long without hearing this one! This song is amazing
Schism is perfection the melody is solid thru out the beginning has feel of peace in the beginning vocals then the fire and then back to soft of opening melody it’s very solid ❤
“I hold tool to a really high standard.. it’s their fault, you know” that’s a quotable quote if I ever heard one ❤
Honestly the only positive thing about America anymore is that we suddenly all appreciate each other’s music! Build bridges instead of walls
This song is like a snake plant...don't fret, it will grow on you. A song that perfectly embodies its Title!
5 listens in the 4-Runner and I guarantee your opinion about this song will change. It will become a Top-3 track, just wait and see.
6:15 to 6:30 in the forerunner on 10 repeat, or 5:45 to 6:30, but that 6:16 breakdown absolutely KILLS!!! Over and over and over! (In this video its 10:00 to 10:45, especially10:25)
So many reactors seem to think some of Tools riffs are Adam, but in actuality, it’s Justin on the bass . Like the bass solo in Invicible
thank you much for your Tool reactions. I have been following your journey since the 1st track. I love coming home and finding your reactions :)
