I will say I'm much happier with the design choices they chose to follow with the s21. Camera layout, the way the screen wraps, it's all better than this, which has a boxy antiquated design by today's standard.

Uncomfortable as hell to hold due to right-angle edges.
Gimmicky control method which realistically requires turning the phone around to see what you are doing. Taking a feature to an extreme without considering if it actually works.
I think there is merit in extending the functionality of edge controls, but not in that way.
Do it instead with direction gestures, long and short swipes of a thumb or finger, long or short presses or squeezes, taps, etc.
The form you present has I feel major usability and ergonomic problems.
Front and rear fingerprint sensors seems really off.
512gb of internal storage seems rather a stretch at that point. though could appear on a premium flagship with a price to match.

And look at where the iPhone, and most for that matter are in terms of that aspect. Curved.
And what do models now several generations old have to do with the argument, when modern releases have moved ever further away from that.
You aren't even providing in my view an argument that I was wrong, just pointing out one example of phones with a similar edge design for a very different reason.
There are tempered glass protectors that work for a screen, so potentially you could have glass sides on a case. Though that would be very prone to being broken.
At best it would offer protection from preventing direct contact, so more from scratches and dust etc rather than shock.
I still think that case aside, there are fundamental problems with how that part of the design is approached.
