    Thanks for this video, I have this task to do also.... So can you knock out the bricks where the lintel needs to go without worrying the bricks will buckle? how long can it last without a lintel?

    • @lnaylo12
      @lnaylo12  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Based on the the triangulation theory only an equilateral triangle of brickwork would fall out ..but this depends on how its constructed ,more than likely if its less than 900mm itll be ok without props but I'd still be getting a lintel in ASAP. Good luck with the project ...I will upload the final video of the finished room soon 👍🏼

      I was thinking the same thing as I have this job to do - thought I would have put a support in or something else bricks would fall out - but it’s ok? As long as we get the lintel asap!!

      What clearance do you recommend either side of the wood burner please? As this determines the length of the lintel right??

      That all depends on the fire you're buying ,it's in the fires specification which if you've chosen one you can usually download the install spec from the manufacturers website

      When its spanning two different materials of two different densities it was liable for cracking so a couple of rods will help prevent that for the sake of £4 for a couple of rods gave me piece of mind

    This is very dangerous - you have posted a video without explaining when you need to support the chimney above as you fit the lintel. If you can simply take out the bricks before you put the lintel in, then you don't need a lintel! The bricks above should have been supported with 'strong boy' acrows, before you removed all of the bricks!

      Nope mr keyboard warrior I've been a builder for 25 years ...learn about the traingular load bearing of brick work
      An assessment of the loading carried by a lintel can be made by a triangle method, as given in BS 5977: Part 1 (European and British Standard specification for lintels). The 45 degree triangle, of base equal to the span of the lintel, represents the load the lintel must bear.
      Basicaly means is only a triangle of Brickwork would fall out if unsupported and seeing as tho its only a small opening that would equate to 10 bricks at best ..but those are still held together by the plaster for the 1hr it was left unsupported....if you think the whole stack would fall down then you really shouldn't be doing the work yourself .not saying this is the case for every install but it was for mine .....its not an instructional video mearly a video on how I did mine

      @@lnaylo12 OK I'm sure that your knowledge is excellent and I didn't mean to suggest that you are wrong when you do it. However, this is a public information video and really does need a lot of caution for anyone copying you, and as such really it would be much better if you spent time explaining the risks; including when it might not be OK to rely on the 'triangle'. I am planning to take my fire place up much higher, to add a kitchen cooker in the recess, I will not be relying on 'triangles' and will support with strong boys above the line I intend to add the new raised lintel before I remove the bricks.

      Then you have the perfect opetunity to make a video yourself post it on TH-cam and show everyone how to do it ...I will look forward watching it .....if people blindly follow other people on the internet with out proper research that's their look out and not my responsibility
