As a retired Air Traffic Controller if I had a pound for every "near miss" "low flying" complaint on flights which were properly managed and/or separated I would be very wealthy. Ground observers in general have a poor sense of assessing altitudes .Good job you had Sky Demon , it provides great evidence.

Agreed, it’s definitely easy to misjudge the altitudes even with flying experience. Even sometimes when looking at traffic in the circuit 1000ft above I could easily underestimate their actual altitude and I fly the same bloomin circuit!

I disagree here. These people should Not be classed as Funny, or Trollish. In this modern age, too many now feel it is their right to make complaints or allegations about others who are going about their lawfully permitted business. If, after investigation, their accusation is found to be false, then the complainant should be fined for wasting Govt. time - in the same way as in Police cases. And the accused - if found innocent - should then have the right take legal action in return. There needs to be a deterrent against these people.

Hi Noel. I had exactly the same thing happen. I took a neighbour over our village so he could spot his house. 10 minutes after landing I had an email from the owner of the club saying he’d had a resident ranting and raving in his ear. Apparently I’d been ‘zooming low over his house’, ‘recklessly endangering…….’. Etc etc. in this instance it was handy that the guy had been cc’d in on the request to explain myself. I simply sent back the SkyDemon debriefing pack for the flight which showed I had been no lower than 2,000ft. As it turns out I knew who the guy was. He couldn’t look me in the eye next time I saw him……. Tosser.
Keep up the good work and the great videos.

Exactly, the sound of a little prop plane at 150 feet would wake the whole village up as I mentioned, you've probably heard police helicopters flying low when chasing criminals or doing exercises, and yes their engines are usually gas turbine and noisier, but 150ft is a height that would disturb hundreds of households and now with social media and smartphones being endemic, it's strange that the person who complained didn't have backup witnesses or evidence of his own to back up his libellious accusations!!

As he mentioned, if the engine were to fail, he had fields to land in, away from civilization.

As a PPL(A) I saw someone flying circuits overhead my pretty densely populated neighbourhood, lower than circuit height. Went inside, looked at FR24 (according to them it was at 500ft…) saw it came from Lelystad, got the registration, and just called the flying club about the fact that his/her flying could jeopardise the feeling people had about GA. They talked to the guy who hired the C172 and phoned me back to thank me for educating their customers and for taking this route, and not the official one (which in my eyes is ratting a fellow aviator out, whilst he just may have forgotten to keep track of his altitude).

The "try not to piss people off" advice is a bit of a delicate one. There are all sorts of people who will get pissed off by the most normal thing, to try and keep everyone happy would mean to stay at home and do nothing. And sometimes that will piss your neighbour off as well!
The real lesson learnt here is to always cover your back by tracking your flight.

Its worth noting that what constitutes a congested area when it comes to towns and villages are only those marked with irregular yellow boundaries or the yellow squares on a half mil chart. Villages that are marked with a yellow circle are not considered to be congested areas.

I ask this and have read on your website about your travels during covid, regular testing etc, but don't you feel unsafe, any concerns? (possible duplicate, message disapoeared). While the clup treated you professionally upon seeing your log, if this were to get to a court, would there be a way to prove autnenticity of your log? (if you had opportunity to edit the .GPX file, you could have falsified the alttude readings for instance). Or are the logs tamper proof? If upon landing, police connected to your plane and downlaoded the log themselves, they they cab vouch for its accuracy, but if you hand the log yourself after the complaint has been lodged, someone could argue that it was tanmpered with. Would the club download the logs after efery rental? (at which point they would become trusted source of info) ?

I'm not sure which model of Cherokee he's flying, but the PA28-181 Archer III has a service ceiling of 14,085 feet and an absolute ceiling of 16,400 feet.
The service ceiling is the altitude where the maximum rate of climb you can attain is 100 feet per minute. The absolute ceiling is the altitude where your rate of climb decreases to zero.

Reminds me of a friends mother who used to sit in her garden in Hampton and take pictures of any plane on its way to Heathrow which she deemed was too noisy. She then wrote to the airline to complain and had a filing cabinet full of letters from the airlines. This was back in the 1970's so with the DC8's, 707's and Concorde being amongst the nosiest she was kept busy. :-)
