Finally a tutorial on masking that doesn't assume I already know what masking means, and actually uses an example that is realistic to what a beginner would do
I've been looking for sculpting mask brush tutorials for a couple of days and found some good tutorials, but not quite what I needed. Then, Ryan appeared and, as always, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. You're a godsend, man! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
I just watched your 100k subscribers video and I must say you deserve it. Love your tutorials and they helped me so much through my 3D journey. Congrats Ryan, God bless you!
wow, i wish i knew about both the mask tool, and the dynotopo setting, earlier, would have been super useful...... defiantly going to be using this in the future.
Great video, thank you! One thing I was trying to find that you didn't cover was how to apply the mask only to front faces; mine kept showing up on the opposite side of my mesh too. Under the Brush dropdown, tick the "Front Faces Only" option. Figured I'd pass that along in case anyone else needed it!
I was following a different tutorial that required me to use the mask tool to add some inscriptions to an axehead. Couldn't get it to work. Figured I should step back a bit and look at the mask tool itself so I'd at least know what it was I couldn't do. So while I still can't get it to work, I at least understand the problem better now. Thanks!
is there any way to mask object parts with an alpha map that comes from UV and inflate the mask in sculpting mode? there is such a way in Zbrush but in Blender, I only find the alpha as brush, not as a mask.
tysfm! Ive been wondering this for sometime, and seen tutorials were there is heads being scultped, and always seen that dark mask, and realized thats exactly what it was , a "mask"! Also, the dyno topo thing thats what ive been trying to figure out as well, but did njot know how people turned it on. never seen it done, it was like people had it turned on as blender loaded up.
This at least makes me a little less overwhelmed, thank you. Trying to resculpt an old Gamecube model to use as a 3D Print. I wanted to sculpt some of the details that were originally made through texturing, but I've been struggling like crazy just to get the sculpt tools to do what I want lol Half barely do anything, and tools like Clay, that are supposed to "add on" in fact cave the model inwards. Masking should hopefully help a lot, the only issue is I can't really see what I've masked lol
If they’re doing the opposite of what they’re supposed to do, go into edit mode and alt+N and flip normals. That should solve that, or alt+N and either recalculate inside/outside. One of those usually solves the issue for me.
I must have clicked something and now i can't use mask at all in a file of mine. It just doesn't do anything. Any idea how to enable it again?! I'm going to have to make a new file and import all the stuff to that If I can't get this fixed.
When I use the Mask tool to paint, nothing shows up. The Mask Overlay is turned on. It's the same with Subdivision Surface applied or not. ... Upgraded from 3.2.1 to 3.6.2 and that fixed it. Bug in the system.
This video is an excellent demonstration of how much you can get done with just the masking tool, and I highly recommend combining it with the info from Blender Secrets "Hard Surface Sculpting Tips" Part 1 and 2. Thanks Ryan!
hi, is there a way to rotate mesh after masking certain area? such as a cat ears. i want to just rotate but it's too high poly so i want to rotate just ear part with rotation of sculpting mode. but can't! Zbrush just can do. but blender i don't know how..plz help
hey it's me again 😅I'm desperate about something small again and am searching like crazy on Google. I thought there was a function to make the masked area invisible so that i can see inside the body. Or am I stupid and that's not possible with the mask, and another mode/funktion? 🙈 Thanks. And great Tutorial as Always 👌

glad you like it!
This "paint the shape you want, then invert the mask" technique is brilliant. Thanks for sharing
thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! Yes, I use Linux Mint! 👍

Hi ryan how'd you get a nice crisp mask please
how do you clear out the mask after your done sculpting the specific area?
thank you Sir for sharing your knowledge in such a didactic way making everything clear while going straight to the topic, +like and keep it up.
glad you like it!
is there an option to smooth out the mask?
I tried using mask but it doesn't show the brush marks that yours does.
Thank you. Another very helpful rundown.
I'm wondering if it's possible to set masks from selected faces.

hey quick question here. Can i export the mask i made on my mesh to be used in substance painter?
amazing
thanks!
awesome! can you cover the mask and facesets menu on the top bar next Please!
thanks for the tutorial request 👍 👍
I can turn the mask into a texture?

You can use multiresolution instead of subvision for great performance while sculpting

Do masks protect a spot from merging with other surfaces during a remesh? I have problems with fingers merging during a full body sculpt.
maybe try sculpting with the "Front Faces Only" Checked on the Brush Settings
thank you, fortunately, areas masked in sculpt mode remain that way switching to texture painting
Im not able to see mask black color on my sculpt any solution?
Can you hide masked region in sculpt mode? Somehow I find they said there is a hide_mask menu, but I can't find it..
Good tutorial, Ryan. Could you do something on geometry nodes? It still remains a bit of a mystery for me and the posibilities are imens.
thanks for the tutorial request. I will consider it. 👍
Tf clay strip are not working in 3.6 version
So, when I click on Dyntopo, my model looks all low-poly when I sculpt it. What am I doing wrong? thanks
maybe turn the dyntopo detail level down, so its more detailed.
Thanks Ryan
you are welcome!

is there not a shortcut for this brush?
Nice tips

How to hide area masking
hi, is there a way to rotate mesh after masking certain area? such as a cat ears. i want to just rotate but it's too high poly so i want to rotate just ear part with rotation of sculpting mode. but can't!
Zbrush just can do. but blender i don't know how..plz help
Rotate tool is on the menu of brushes near the pose brush on the left and there’s the rotate button near the bottom too.
Fantastic ...thanks from india

What about erasing the mask filled area?
I think its alt+m
Good! ❤
