  • New for 2020, this Gerber utility knife offers a sliding utility blade with the added functionality of a pry bar with several integrated features. This is one that I am looking forward to carry for a while. My only issue with this knife is the lack of a pocket clip.

    At last! A Gerber multi-tool that I would buy! A 100% work related tool that I probably wouldn't carry whilst wearing a dinner suit, but would feel right at home with on the job site. Well done Gerber!

      This is definitely what I would categorize as a job site tool. There are many options out there for a utility blade holder in slimmer profiles for those that just need a utility knife. This one is meant to go to work. It’s larger, more robust, and the integrated pry tool make it a winner I do believe. A few weeks on the job site will tell that tale though.

      So they do sell one now with a pocket clip. I purchased one last week in this same color with the clip. One thing to note though. They put clip on the prybar end so when you go to pull it out of your pocket I occasionally jab myself with the prybar as it’s sticking up in your pocket. The way it’s designed though they really couldn’t have attached it any differently though. Overall I like it and I carry it on my belt sheath.

    Thanks for the great review. I think Gerber really hit a home run with this one. I've been looking for a pocket utility knife for a while. I've tried several, but they were either too light and flimsy, or big bulky folders, or ridiculously expenive. This thing is built very solid, the price is decent, and it feels like it should withstand lots of heavy duty use. I haven't had much faith in anything Gerber lately. I hope this is a sign of the direction they're headed.

    Thank you I am looking at that tool right now. A key ring with a clip may require two hands to clip it. But I as well like a neat way to store a tool that is easy to access. Maybe I will take a clip off another knife and try to fasten it on. I like the fact the blade is not a break off style. I can also sharpen those blades in a pinch. Though probably not on the job. 🤗

    Last week I lost my Gerber EAB Lite . I need a box cutter / utility tool for my warehouse job . I use it for cutting straps and breaking down boxes . I went to a sporting goods store ( name withheld ) to buy another . I picked up one of these instead . After using it for eight hours I'm liking it alot . Its easily worth twice the price of the EAB as It is much sturdier and has the extra functions . My EAB Lite worked loose in the joint , the pocket clip wasn't securely fixed in place , I needed to use the screwdriver in my Swiss Army knife to change the blade , and I nearly lost the miniscule blade screw a couple of times . One time I left my EAB in my jeans pocket when I put it through the wash and nearly lost the pocket clip . The blade retention screw came loose and the blade nearly came out when I opened it . Im my opinion the EAB is a lighweight cutter for occasional use , but this tool is meant for heavier duty . Thanks for making the video , and for reading my input .

    Great review man, may need to pick one of these up! If you want to add your own pocket clip, I highly recommend the Niteize Hipclip. It's made of steel and fastens on to your tool with VHB tape. I know a clip held on with tape doesn't sound very robust but it's surprisingly strong stuff. I use it to pocket carry my Victorinox Spirit X and it's held strong for over a year of EDC with no sign of failure. They're only a few bucks each.
    Keep doing what you're doing!

    This was a useful review for me, ended up buying one a month ago. Much sturdier blade lock than my old Stanley 99E and easier to grip. I agree the prybar is all but useless as a screwdriver. Bottle opener is an option of last resort, and did nick my hand when I was first getting used to it. If they dropped the bottle opener idea and widened the pry bar to fully span it would be a better tool IMO. Has become my go-to box cutter and handy little prybar here and there. Would buy again

I would like to see the lanyward hole changed to a 1/4" hex hole- one of my tool sets to throw a couple of bits, a fingertip driver, and a driver extension (among other things) into an altoids tin. Seems like a pocket clip would rob some thickness to the prybar use... I'm not an engineer and I don't know the proper terms so... let's say you have 40° of usable lever action. The added thickness of the clip would reduce it to 30° or less.... or am i wrong....?

    • @txtoolcrib

      In this case, the pocket clip would be located on the top side. So for this particular tool I don't believe it would take away anything for the usefulness of the pry bar.

    The notch that you postulate is for cutting cord or string would probably also work well for cutting plastic sheeting or Tyvek house wrap. The prybar and stripper part of the tool looks useful. The handle design doesn't look as if it will be comfortable to grip for long periods of time, however; and I have never much cared for the lever-type blade mechanisms ( too easy to squeeze the lever/button by accident when using the tool, forcing the blade to retract).. As a general purpose utility knife, I think I'll stick with my Olfa, the type with a thumb wheel blade-lock and the snap-to-renew blades. I have never found a standard utility blade of any brand that is as sharp as the Olfa blades.

    • @txtoolcrib
      @txtoolcrib  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve never tried Olfa blades. My curiosity is raised now, I think I’ll try to check them out.

    • @goodun2974
      @goodun2974 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@txtoolcrib , until I read some positive things about Olfa, I had never been impressed with any of the "snap to renew" style blades or especially the typically cheesy holders that those blades worked with, mostly because of the propensity to accidentally squeeze the lever or button and have the blade retract on you while working with the knife. The larger OLFA knives, however, have a thumb wheel that locks the blade *tight*. They're easily available st Home Dumpo for about 7 or 8 bucks, and another 8 or 9 bucks for a 5pack of spare blades. ( You will not find OLFA knives displayed with all the other utility knives in the tools section, for some reason; you'll only find them in the paint department! Most home dumpo employees seemed completely unaware that they even have them.). I bought one of these knives and liked it so much that now I've got 5 or 6 scattered around the house, the car, in strategic locations so to speak. The blades are *surgically sharp*; especially the double honed blades with the black anodized finish which cost an extra dollar or 2 per pack of 5 . They seem to be made of a very good quality carbon steel, which, combined their relative thinness, does mean they're a little more brittle than your traditional utility knife blade.
      As far as I am aware, Olfa doesn't make standard style utility knife blades, which is a shame. The packaging does show pictures of other OLFA blades with sawtooth patterns and various useful shapes or designs available, but nobody local stocks them and those probably have to be purchased online.

      T Cruikshank thanks for the information. I only held it for probably less then a minute at the store and put it back. Probably felt like plastic since it’s surrounded by plastic.

    • @TimCruikshank
      @TimCruikshank 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BudgetBuiltDiesel Understood. I thought the same before I bought it. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Also, the G10 handles are a dense epoxy fiber material and don't feel plasticy at all. Gerber has produced some items of questionable quality in past years, but this isn't one of those. Hopefully it's a sign of good things to come from them.

    I like my Rexford RUT V4 so much but use my RUK every day it seems..I don’t know how I feel about gerber and what they have become..I just feel after their gimmicky run with bear grylls, it lowered or tarnished their quality..i don’t know if it is me but back when gerber started with knives, it was hard to say anything bad about them and I WANTED to own their knives/tools..now, not so much...great review as usual!

The locking slide mechanism broke off the utility blade holding part. 8:38 if you look closely on the left of the button, it's only that thin piece of metal holding them together. After looking online seems like multiple people have the same problem as I did.

    My two cents: Remove the prybar and bottle opener, make it only as large/thick as needed and make in the US/Canada and I'd buy one! We use these a lot at work.
      Gerber EAB is great, but feels a bit loose w/ standard blades. I prefer the Dewalt carbide ones.
      The Workpro folders are cheap & small w/ a quick change mechanism. I got a 3-pk for the crew. 1 of is as solid as the Gerber, 2 are a bit loose.
      Honestly the egg-shaped "Sheffield" brand at Walmart is really good. While you're there, grab a lightweight "Hyper Tough" 4-way fiberglass screwdriver. Really good edc, also insulated & UL-rated , made in the US. & $5. they're also sold under Stanley & Allway.
