Okay, confession time. When I was carrying the Eablité, I would cut packing foam and cardboard over a concrete floor without hesitation. That's part of why I loved it. This was my introduction to EDCing a knife, and it was really born of being frustrated with my warehouse. Everytime I had to open a box, which is probably 1-3 times daily, I would have to hunt around the warehouse for 5 minutes for a knife. If I had to make a package... oh boy, you better believe there was never a table with a clean and clear cutting mat available. I'm a terrible person, I know, but I'd never do that again after I 'graduated' to better knives. Your impressions were pretty similar to my own... can't disagree with you anywhere. The one time I still carry the EAB is into the city (Chicago). If a venue I'm going in checks, I'd be happy to dispose of the blade for them. And yes... it does happen... I almost got turned away from a concert last weekend for my KeySmart!

This thing fulfills a very specific need for me. I travel quite a bit, and I hate checking bags. I can go for a week of business meetings with only a small carry on bag. But of course this means no knife. So I Gerber ESB in my pocket, sans blade. And I either mail a blade (well wrapped) to myself ahead of time care of my hotel, or I stop at a hardware store on my way to the hotel and pick up a five pack of bales for a couple of bucks. Then I throw the blades away before I fly home.
Not being able to carry a small blade on an aircraft is bureaucratic idiocy, but it is what it is, and this thing at least gives me something sharp in my pocket when otherwise I wouldn't have anything.

(GERBER LITE TRICK). Ok so I’ve used the gerber for years and after two years I found out if you push down on the pocket clip right on the hump where is has the GE in gerber and then push up as you push down with your thumb the clip will come out and you can use that as the screw driver for the blade and then it just pops back into place once you are done. I’ve been doing this every time I change blades for around 3 years now and the clip still goes back into place and doesn’t come out on accident.

Actually, the blades are NOT readily available at any hardware store. Gerber uses a rather thick blade, that is not readily found. If you use a standard thickness blade, the screw sets too deeply, and the knife will not close. This is because the threads will protrude and interfere with the money-clip. Stanley's EXTRA-HEAVY-DUTY blades work fine, and are found on Amazon (yet to see them in a hardware store).
p.s. I replaced the original screw with a shorter thread, and a lower profile head (the original scratches my pocket contents), and it works so much better.

The Original, and far superior, EAB is not like that, or at least the ones I have aren't. I bought a few extras on clearance when the "lite" was introduced.
Thankfully it does not look like they have in fact discontinued old faithful so you might go that route.

Shawn Forsythe You must have gotten one with a weird screw because if I take the blade out and put the screw back in, tightened all the way down without any blade it doesn't protrude at all.

honestly, for one of these utility knives/box cutters, the best one to get imho is the Husky Sure Grip (super cheap at Home Depot). Swapping the blades is so much simpler on that thing. I only use it for breaking down boxes, but when it dulls, I don't need to get a penny to switch the blade.
Love the look of this thing though (again, I know I'm only talking about a box cutter).

You can get dime-a-dozen folding utility blades that beat this. Husky has one that costs about the same, comes with a set of blades, and has a backlock, a thumb stud, and a quick release for the blade that doesn't require any tools. The only feature on the EAB lite that stands out is the blade guard.

    • @mia_757
      @mia_757 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I have that one, and it really sticks out of the pocket, and and the button blade release is a big safety issue. The backlock and liner lock on these utility knives don't matter since you shouldn't be using them for hard use.

I actually used this as a money clip for a while. I kept cards in a card holder, and kept this in a pocket and put bills in the clip in the rare cases that I actually carried cash. It was pretty good, but it fell out of my pocket into a part of my car where I couldn't get it, and I didn't go buy another one.

Nick, I beg to differ about the clip being useless. I'm a delivery driver for a very famous pizzeria franchise and I hold my bank (change money) in the clip very effectively. We are not allowed to carry a knife so when I saw this nifty little "box cutter", I knew it would be acceptable, given the fact that I use it to cut open boxes periodically. I own the silver one in your review and also a black one which I installed a gold razor blade making it look pretty cool against the black finish. This tool is very useful for small intermittent tasks, I would definitely recommend it for every day carrying. I enjoy your reviews nonetheless.

I normally go through two of these Gerber utility knives within a year. In the six years I've been using these knives the screw is the biggest issue! Daily use the screw tends to warp the screw head and almost becomes nearly impossible to replace the blade, and it's Very Easy to lose the screw. Also the frame itself misalignes with the body.

I found you can easily one hand open the knife if you hold it by the blade and push on the clip. Your thumb on the screw and forefinger clamping down your middle finger slides it open effortlessly. Also another poster said you cant find the thicker blades and the thin ones make the screw to long to close the blade. They must have put a shorter screw in mine. But a thin washer or a new screw would work too.

For one handed open Try putting it in your back left pocket when you pull it out you will be holding the blade side instead of handle side. Then just give it a flick. You will be holding the blade of course but will be in just right position for handing it to a knife-less minded friend with a knife need.

If I may, I carried one gerber EAB for a while, not the lite version but it should work with that too, to open it one handed, simply grab the knife by the screw (as a rough point of reference) betweenyour thumb and the knuckle of your index and give it a quick tug, not that much force is required, and the knife will lock open in an instant, gloves or barehanded.
That said I MUCH prefer the regular EAB to the light one, it looks so much better, much more nicely designed, a cool clean shape..I really dislike those cuts in the handle...
    A couple more infos:
if you want you can unscrew the thumbstud from a chinese cheap knife and substitue your EABLITE screw, but given the way I personally opened mine, I was happy to not have a thumbstud that would get cought up in my pocket.
The screw can also be opened with the back of a utility blade.
Also I think you can tighten up the center screw the one with the 2 side divets by using retention ring plyers, probably the 90° ones are the best idea, but i'll be experimenting soon on that to make sure since i'll be buying 4 EABs tomorrow :D

@@blairtaylor9552 Anyone that owns an EAB deserves an answer even on a 4 years old comment 😁
In all honesty I bought 4 of them because the plan was to use and abuse them as daily tools, little did I know that the first one I started using survived all and I mean ALL the abuse I could muster...
I have used it to cut cardboard, ropes, hoses, and even pvc pipes.
the butt of the knife is a wonderful bottle opener.
I have used the flat sides to hammer nails.
It has been in contact with acids, I have used it to cut drywall, and the list goes on an on.
The only issue I've had with it was when a dumb collegue of mine broke the pocket clip by handling it like a caveman but as you can imagine I had 3 knives worth of spare parts 😎
I litterally cannot find something to complain about and trust me I looked...
FYI I am also the owner of a Giaco Whatever knife which for roughly 60$ is a steaming pile of dung compared to an 8$ EAB.
I'll leave you with a curiosity about my favourite knife, do you know why the slot of the screw is so large on the EAB?
Because it is designed to be loosened with a penny 😁 and it works with a euro cent as well 😍
P.S. If by any chance you are into lighters as well, take a loom at the Zorro 912HK also known as Zorro War Armor, a chinese clone of the Zippo, cool part is that it is not stamped like the Zippo but machined from a solid brass chunk, it is somewhat waterproof, it looks like a roided up zippo and the best part?

I own one of these and it has no play at all. While I'm aware that the model has undergone a few changes and one of those could be to get rid of whatever play there was, it's also possible that this guy created the play himself by forcing his thumb hard against the blade hold trying to upen it one handed all the time. It's true that you can make a knife sharper then a razor blade, its important to note that you can buy titanium and even tungsten razor blades. A tungsten pocket knife would be pretty. Personally it isnt so much of a pain to open this with two hand but It might be possible to get a screw from the hardware store that will replace the standard set screw and give yourself a better surface for opening with your thumb. Also money clips are for money, not cards. I worried all the time that when pulling things out of my pocket, I could accidentally drop some money to blow away in the wind. With this, the money will just drop straight down for me to pick up. I did get a kick out of your observation of the grinder work and its present on mine to lol

I don’t think it’s painted. I actually polished mine and it looks nice. I’ve been carrying mine for six years trucking in NY using it for everything including heavy rope canvas, cardboard , plastic , rubber etc. There is guy in Texas that makes a cool little sheath for it. I bought one and it’s been in the sheath on my belt for two years. I bought it for nine bucks but now they are up to almost twenty bucks.

Terrible knife for use in the shipping/receiving field. Clip breaks off easily and often. Clip is backwards when clipping inside your front right pocket - disallows smooth pull from pocket to deploying the blade, to using on boxes when receiving in product. I still have one but is in the kitchen as a small house hold tool. It is ridiculous that you need another tool to switch out the blade. Try the Lenox Gold Utility knife. Nice size, weight, easy deploying of the blade and even easier to replace the blade. The best utility knife I have ever used on the job.

being French, it sounds like you are saying "Diable de la Thé" ;) I had the EAB and EAB Lite - ended up giving the EAB Lite to a friend. I personally prefer the EAB. I found them to be pretty slippery so I had to use some skateboard tape on mine - only way I can open it one handed.

      @NickShabazz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Luc Albert Hah. I do love me some tea-devils. Skateboard tape seems like a decent idea, good thinking. But I'm likely giving this away anyways...

+Luc Albert There are a bunch of these out there. The MUT too. I'm not entirely convinced by the concept, but it does have some joys. Particularly that it's easy to travel with. Ditch the blade when you depart, buy one at a local hardware store on arrival.

+Nick Shabazz I have a Rexford RUT and like it quite a bit, but it requires two hands to get the blade out (tucking it back in can be done with one hand). Depending on the blades you are using, it's not always the smoothest thing, but I appreciate it for what it is.
Tell you what tho, for opening boxes it's awesome. I learned the hard way once when I use a long slicer blade that was very shart to cut open a box, just to accidentally slice through the content of the package :o(

There's always somebody asking dumb questions or complaining: Are they legit or counterfeits? They look cheaply made? Don't trust Gearbest...
C'mon girls, nothing more than bitching, bitching, bitching!!..The darn thing sells for "peanuts" so of course is made in China, but is built well, it's light weight, looks cool and perfect for opening boxes, cutting paper, opening mail, etc. This is a small project knife and it serves it's purpose so, who gives a f..*&%# if it is sold by Gearbest or if it's made in China or if it's legit or counterfeit, to me it's strong enough , unless you're planning to fight bears with it.
