  • In 2019 I brought my Canon 814xls Super 8 camera whenever I could fit it in my bag. From that footage I created this collection of memories.
    Shot on Kodak Ektachrome 100D, 500T and 50d

    Wow, that's gorgeous and very sharp! I shoot on Super 16, with a modded K-3 since I always found Super8 just a bit too soft and too gritty, but looking at your footage, I am convinced that Super8 can produce great looking images. Perfect for that dreamy, silky, magical, emotional look that film is all about. Thanks for sharing. Have a great 2021!

      Super 8 is fine, the biggest problem is scanning such a small film with enough resolution. To do so you have to find a company with a 4K and preferably even 8K film scanner and be willing to pay the scanning costs. The more I see of well shot Super 8 film scanned at 4K and some even at 8K the more I realise it isn't the frame size but the scanning methold. I used to think the same thing though... Until I saw videos like this and then realised all the Kodak Professional stocks are now coming in super 8 cartridges.
      The real limitation is the cartridge size... 50ft at 24fps gets you about two and a half minutes of footage. You have to have your scene downpat to fit it into that time frame and not mess anything up otherwise your going to start to burn through cartridges and what you thought might cost you about $500 in film for an episode shot at 24fps is going to start costing you much more.
      The biggest problem is film itself isn't cheap and the average person who is interested in shooting film on TH-cam doesn't actually have that kind of money to burn each time they want to produce something. and then I watched one episode of a guy who did, and then the pressure plate gave out on his 8mm camera, which meant about half of his footage came out ruined. It shot an image but the results were tragic.

      Btw, on Super Bow Sunday I shot my first roll in this very same camera model so I don't even know if the thing works. To make it even MORE of an uphill challenge I used old Ektachrome 160 (the "A" variety) hoping to get an actual sound, though probably horrible, out of it. Spectra will attempt to develop it but costs almost $100 and takes 4 months. Still haven't sent it in. I might get NOTHING back!
      However, seeing how well your footage turned out encourages me to try more film with this camera!

I've shot a couple of rolls of the new 100D plus some TRI-X. I like the looks and have a projector to show it, but based on your results, I'll go with 50D and 500T and have it scanned.

    WOW! Love the vibrancy and cinematography! I’m just starting out with Super 8 and this is a great reference. Any suggestions for shooting indoor with natural light and bright outdoor shots?

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. If you plan to shoot Indoors you’ll want to use a high speed film. You can shoot 500T just make sure you use the 85 filter in daylight, most super 8 cameras have the built in. For bright outdoors I always shoot 50D, it produces great results even in harsh sunlight. 500T and 50d are my go to’s for everything super 8 these days.

  • @theundefinedphotographer
    @theundefinedphotographer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    These scenes are stunning. Love the change of seasons and change of locations. Love your gliding camera movements too. I haven't tried super 8 ektachrome yet since it's pricier than color negative, but it's definitely on my list. How many rolls of film did you go through?

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! I had no shot Super8 for a few years and the return of ektachrome is what sparked my interest. The main reason being I wanted to relive the magic of projecting film and viewing it for the first time. The negative stocks perform significantly better under most conditions however you have no choice but to have the film digitized to view it. So that’s essentially the trade off. If you don’t plan to project your film I personally don’t see any benefit in shooting ektachrome - unless you want the reversal film look when digitized. I think everything you saw here came from a total of around 10 rolls? Something like 4 ektachrome, 4 50d, and 2 500t.

    • @theundefinedphotographer
      @theundefinedphotographer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@RyanNavazio Thanks so much for the detailed advice! This helps a lot. I don't own a projector, so I've always been going the route of getting my film digitized anyway. And wow, 10 rolls, that's impressive. It must have taken you a lot of patience to wait until you've gotten enough footage from 10 rolls, but it really did pay off because in the end you were able to choose the best footage from the 10 rolls and edit them together to create a wonderful little short film :)

    Hey man just wanted to say your videos are amazing, inspiring and have really sold me on getting into super 8. Just curious, for the shot of the flowers and blurry background at 1:48 , did you use an ND filter in order to get this shallow depth of field ? Or was your exposure just good enough to be able to shoot wide open ?

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t think this was shot wide open. The canon 814xls lens has a macro mode and it was shot using that. Most likely somewhere around f5.6-f8 with no ND.

  • @TheHoleshoes
    @TheHoleshoes ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks great!! When you had 500T in your camera and wanted to get a shot in bright day light did you have to use an ND? Also, did you notice a big difference in 50D and 500T in terms of grain? yours looks pretty clean but other videos I've seen are really grainy. (Just purchased my first cart of 500 and 50. that's why I'm asking)

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      500T is definitely much grainier than 50D. For this video I only used 500T in lower light situations, so no need for ND. I was usually over exposing it by 2/3 - 1 stop, depending on how much light was available. Over exposing it a bit can help minimize the appearance of grain. Also, depending on how high resolution your scan is, post sharpening, etc.

    • @TheHoleshoes
      @TheHoleshoes ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RyanNavazio And this is why I love youtube! Thanks man this is super helpful!! I think I'll try that overexposing trick! I've got my Minolta XL601 coming in the mail so I'll have to do some tests on my first cartridge to figure out the manual exposure. Just saw you have a 16mm video as well! I window shopped for one of those for a while! cool stuff!

    If I can ask, where did you have your film processed? and any advice for color correcting this film?

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was processed by pro8mm. If you don’t have any experience color correcting / grading footage I would recommend using a best light scan. It’s a bit more costly but a colorist will go through and balance out your film. If you have experience with color grading or you want to learn it, have your film scanned in LOG/FLAT and grade it yourself. One thing to remember is you want a nice high quality file to work with so if you’re going to log route get a pro-res file or similar so you have room to work in the grade.

    Great Video! Which film type did you choose for the low light outdoor scenes? Like the three shots starting from 0:10 ? And how did you get so high saturated colours for the lake scenes at 0:56? Just started with 8mm and I think your results are beyond perfect! cheers

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      :55 is going to 50D. The other scenes are a mix of 250D (black sprocket hole) and ektachrome 100D (white sprocket holes) - if you’re just starting I suggest shooting 50D in bright light and 500T in subdued light. I’ve shot just about every film available at this point and I’m now at the point where I don’t shoot anything other than those 2 stocks.

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the color is just properly exposing those film stocks in the right scenes. Very little post color is added. I just balance everything out in the grade.

  • @andreacora777

    hi! great shoots! a quick question, is there a big difference in saturation when using 50d film or 500t?

    • @RyanNavazio
      @RyanNavazio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. It’s hard for me to give you a definitive answer to that question. I’ll explain. When I shoot 50D - I’m typically shooting under brighter lighting conditions and more direct sunlight. When I shoot 500T I tend to shoot in more subdued light. In that sense, the 50d is showing more saturated color because of how it handles the lighting. In subdued lighting the 500t does create vibrant color but if I were shooting 500t in bright sunlight, I think the image might be a little more flat and less saturated than the 50d. As far as skin tones go, both films seem to handle them very well. Hope this helps.
