    It's really frustrating how on the consumer side, IMAX as a term has basically been degraded to mean "big screen with loud blown out audio" rather than the full experience. You can find "IMAX" anywhere but most of the theatres/projections suck in comparison to the real deal. I've seen 3 Nolan films in 65mm IMAX and you always have to explain "no no, this is *actual* IMAX"

    • @zoulzopan
      @zoulzopan ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree I hate how they lie to the consumers like this. Not just screen size but actual movies shot with 18k cameras vs movies digitally scaled to fit Imax formats.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@zoulzopan I've seen multiple comments from you talking about "18k". What are you referring to? There's no 18k cameras and no 18k projectors. It seems like you read the theoretical digital equivalent resolution to 15-70 film, which is completely theoretical and is not based in any kind of fact, and took that to mean they shoot or project in 18k.
      Even on a 70mm projector you're viewing a positive print out from a digital scan of the original negative for anything made recently.

      You're right that even films which get 15/70 distributions are usually printed from digital. But Oppenheimer's 15/70 release was an exception as they printed it though a strictly photochemical process

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@ojtheaviator1795 Most of the film was finished entirely photochemically, but to say "strictly" is verifiably false.
      The film has a number of VFX shots that use digital compositing, so would have had to have been scanned and then printed.

    IMAX is the supreme modern format, it might have it's drawbacks like the size of the camera and how loud it is, and how expensive it is to shoot and process IMAX film but it sure pays off in the end with a supremely crisper pristine image over any other format, this is something that other formats cannot do and anything you watch from home will not give you this experience. It's kinda like a when movies of the 60's and 70's were shot on Super Panavision 70mm first only shown in certain cinemas in a super widescreen format in which television of the time couldn't give.

    • @antoinepetrov
      @antoinepetrov ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Actually, it's because television could accommodate a 4:3 ratio that films in the 50s started being made in 1.66, 1.85 and wider. Now's the same, always cinema Vs TV

    • @robertobuatti7226
      @robertobuatti7226 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@antoinepetrov Yes definitely, at that time they were starting to show widescreen movies on to the 4:3 Square TV's of the time so to combat this this format was to entice audiences to see these super widescreen 70mm movies only in theaters.

    • @zoulzopan
      @zoulzopan ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The issue is the consumers, theyre not convinced that paying a premium to see these movies is worth it I disagree though. Coupled with the fact that so many movies and cinemas lie to their audience about what constitute as a true "Imax" most ppl dont realize that true Imax screens are rare and only exists in certain locations and movies that are shot in true 18k Imax resolution vs digital upscaled Imax which sucks.

      99.99% of the population just doesn't give a damn about quality, sadly, eventually going the way of the dodo. Maybe one day we'll have the ability to replicate the experience at home. Reduces everything to basic plot with no sensory and visual perception and immersion the way a big big screen and imax can provide to really give that all-encompassing experince of “being inside” the movie not just sitting outside it watching from afar . Just looking at that shot of the mountains in that one documentary you showed, you can see how utterly amazing the format looks. We’ve gotten somewhat close to emulating the 15/70 format digitally (most notably on Dune and its second Part which went so far as getting a 70mm print), but we’re still a long ways off from ever truly matching the 70mm IMAX look to an exact. There is truly nothing like it.

    But why can’t digital imax projectors show the full 1.43 picture? Even if it means losing a little resolution, wouldn’t filmmakers want more audiences to see the frame/composition as it was intended? With the way it is now, filmmakers gotta consider the 1.43 frame that’s only gonna play on a couple dozen screens, the 1.9 frame for the digital of the IMAX screens, and the 1.77 or 2.35 frame for regular screens. For the budget that IMAX adds to the production, it doesn’t seem worth it if barely anyone is gonna see all that extra screen real estate the filmmakers paid so much for.

I don't know if that's a branding sellout, a short-term patch to fund these better technologies, or what. I don't know what gets people into theaters, but a big-ass wall with a movie on it...might.

    Well all quiet correct except for some details... The shallow depth of field achieved in Imax shot is relative and can be obtained in many other ways: anamorphics, shooting wide open with fast lenses and so on... I guess Imax is a great medium for film but a bit overrated and absolutely not democratic... And there are some specs that nobody seems to be involved or interested in: for example Imax format has been conceived in order to be projected at 75 IRE of maximum level - being thought to be on theaters -. Definitely it s not for any pixel screen whatsoever. So scanning it to be digitalized can also be a cons. Nevertheless I d be not so sure that its DR in terms of useable stops could match the 17 stops of Alexa35... All considered I guess there is too hype around this format.
