When it comes to tiffin eateries in Bengaluru, there are those that are celebrated, even venerated, and splashed across media, both traditional and new. Nothing wrong with that. And then there are those that quietly go about their work, serving customers for decades on end, content to not bask in the limelight. A great example of the latter is Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room in Basavanagudi, South Bengaluru, though open since 1926 is still unknown to most in the city. I visited them one afternoon to meet the second and third generation owners, and to also taste an assortment of their honestly-priced fare, including a deliciously light and fluffy khali dosae and a satisfying sambar. Hope you enjoy this tiffin episode; take care, stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

In bangalore we don't find khali dosa in 95% of hotel there is plain dosa & set dosa but in mangalore we find khali dosa in all hotels.
This hotel was started by my grandfather Shri Late Ramakrishna Karanth and now my cousin brother Girish is looking after. My dad tirelessly worked with his brother for the upliftment of this hotel. This hotel is named after my grandmother Smt Mahalakshmi.
Brother why don't you carry forward the business and expand it to different areas further. These are gems of Bangalore and our old tasty treasures...
@@ravishankar5164 true but my parents didn't want me to carry it as they have seen ups and downs in the hotel business
Nice to know of your connection to MLTR. Your cousin brother and uncle are carrying forward the legacy of Shri Ramakrishna Karanth wonderfully well.
@@FoodLoversTV Thank you sir for visiting and hope you enjoyed the Kaali dose which is what my grandfather pioneered. He was a Jack of cooking all types of food. For people from Kundapura, Cooking food runs in our blood 😂
Hey I've been to kundapura on my way to Mangalore not sure before or after ....but it's in or part of udipi ... traditional eateries are no doubt hard to maintain as costs are to be kept marginal.... hope the footfall increases and business booms even more that requires your presence to run it .... if I'm ever in Bangalore would love to visit .
It's very rare to see these kind of tiffin rooms who maintains same old traditions and recipes. It's amazing. I hope next generation will keep running this keep this tiffin room alive ✌
We hope so too.
There are plenty of these old hotels opened and run by Udupi Kota Brahmins in Bengaluru almost in all old areas like basavangudi Gandhi Bazaar Malleswaram Rajajinagar.
Mahalakshmi Hotel is very good for Dosa, Idly, Vada, Karabath, Coffee, Carrot Halwa etc. I visited there once. Truly a memorable taste. They only take cash I believe. For me this hotel is better than Vidyarthy Bhavan which is nearby. One of the best tiffin spots in Malleswaram.😊Thanks for the Vlog Gourmet Sir🙏...
Hello sir I am bhagath basically I am a soldier you are the only one person I see you narrate extremely well your communication skills are fabulous sir I watched your videos regular I learned too much of words thank you for this keep going on
Either it's 7star hotel or small canteen..kripal sir your way of expressing opinion and enjoying food is the same..such a down to earth person
🙏
Last year, was taking my mom to VB after getting down at National College Metro. While walking in DVG road, we suddenly noticed MLTR, and was somehow drawn towards it. Tried Benne Dose, Vade, and coffee and realised it was the best decision to come here!
Yesterday took my wife here for breakfast. In addition to the items above, tried yummy kesari bath. Now, after watching the video, planning one more visit in the afternoon to have some of that jam-sagu-toast combination and goli bhajji.
Sitting in a corner of the world, I literally tasted the food through your words and pictures. Thanks Sir..
😀🙏 happy eating!
It’s truly wonderful to see you, Mr Kripal, covering once again a very modest but almost like a heritage eatery. All the items you have tasted, especially idly & vade and goli bajji look lovely and mouthwatering. This khali dose is called plain dose in AP/Telangana.Small and beautiful and homely establishment. Good that you visit and encourage such small establishments; surely your visits must matter them a lot. Surely you must have done many pious deeds in your previous lives to deserve and enjoy this type of happy eating in this life.
I wish you not many years of happy eating but many future lives of happy eating.
Kripal, I understand you are trying to reach broader audience and it becomes necessary for you to narrate in English. My request to you is please ask the locals to speak to you in Kannada as much as possible. They think it is a pride for them to speak to you in English, which is unnecessary as you speak and understand Kannada very well. I believe that the local food such as this one goes hand in hand very much with the local language. It is incumbent upon us to encourage and make sure the local language also survives just like the local food. We have already lost so much of Kannada to English. Please do not forget that food and language are integral part of each other.
I am from Bangalore settled in Philadelphia for past 30 plus years. I watch your shows with mouth open. Unfortunately cannot taste. Also I admire your appetite. I would have called it a morning with khali dose, and coffee.
I like such places rather than fancy restaurant. It gives a humble feeling always. Chitchat of peoples in background, tan-tan sound and aroma of food from kitchen, crowdy noise of outside road all these mixture represents livelihood.
And I wish such places to be as it is. Simple.
Every now and then, I keep coming to Kripal'd videos and use them as an opportunity to express my gratitude to the wonderful people of Karnataka, a beautiful culture, and beautiful people rooted deeply in the Sanskriti. I am from Pune and was fortunate to live in Bengaluru for 4 years. I have nothing else but gratitude to express to the place, people, and to this platform where I can express myself, to Kripal Amanna, and to God.
I have been eating here since my childhood almost from 1990. This place is my favourite and I visit at least thrice a week for coffees with my friend and superb dosa without soda
Hey. Being a regular, when i saw the clip of this vlog i said to myself what could i possibly enjoy watching about idli vade; however, was wrong and thorougly enjoyed the entire vlog. Thanks
Sir, you are amazing... Have been following you for last 4 years.. Of all the food vloggers on You tube, you stand out head and shoulders above the rest. More than a vlogger I see you as a story teller and it is incredible to watch you again and again. Kudos!
11:32 I wish this kind of culinary places stand still for the next generations...
In the days where ghee drenched dosaes are in trend, its high time these places do prosper while standing the test of times
For people who are born and brought up in Gandhi Bazaar/Basavanagudi area, we call this place as MTR as this was a close competitor to some of the top dose places around Bengaluru! Khaali doses are heavenly and so is Vade Sambhar!
A good dose doesn't need loads of ghee, a Khali dose from a well made batter gives a satisfaction of its own.
And too non veg but do you support it
I wholeheartedly wish for 100 years centenary celebrations soon. God bless you all.
I wanted to send you this recommendation about this hotel. Good you visited this place finally. I have been visiting this place for now 30 years. Very nice for Kali dose and masala dosa. Girish is one of very well known friend. Good review by you sir.
You shouldn’t change the recipe because of Jains, marvadis keep up the originality ginger is so good for health yes coffee price and other price is more expensive than near by restaurants.
As usual, another great review from you on an iconic eatery. I remember seeing this hotel as a kid from the early 70s and 80s while I was in National College, Basavanagudi. Those days, I never had the money to go to hotels and even eating out was almost unheard of for a traditional middle class family from Shankarapuram. After I started my professional journey, I visited this place multiple times and introduced many of my friends to this wonderful place. The Khali Dosae is just out of the world, the goLi baje is awesome. I just love the ambience of this place - the marble top tables, the wooden benches with the formica sheets, the flooring... everything takes us back in time on a wonderful, nostalgic journey..
What I appreciate with your channel is you approach and enjoy with equal enthusiasm both a nice military hotel non-veg meal and a traditional idly vade sambar dunk!
I have mentioned earlier too that I m amazed that after so many years of ur vlogging in Bangalore the city still has so many pearls to offer 👌👍
reminds me of the childhood in Malleshwaram, since hotels like these don't really function well anymore.
We had been many times to MTR in basavanagudi all items are tasty, authentic taste I love Mahalakshmi tiffin room you also visit when ever you are in basavanagudi
I loved this channel not only to enjoy the savoury meals you share & eat but to learn the vocabularies you use while speak.. great channel..
Baayelli neeru bantu sir nimma dose explanation keli🙂👌
This place was suggested by our house owner and I instantly fell in love with the food there. The food there is so good ! Sitting abroad and watching this on a Sunday evening , eagerly waiting for my vacation . So that I can visit this tiffin place and enjoy the dosa s. Thanks for the video :)
You know you are a true foodie when you save a Goli Baje to have with your coffee😀 Happy Deepavali Kripal!!!
You make me hungry every time I watch your videos, will try visiting this place in my next visit to Bangalore
Truly Heritage city in Basvanagudi..😊
👌🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
After a long time iam seeing u review mahalakshmi restaurant in Mangalore on all old fashioned items beautifully as usual. A top class review kripalji way to go as always
This is nostalgic for me. As we grew up going to this hotel. The taste is still the same even after so many years have passed. I just love the sagu dose😋😋
👍MAHALAKSHMI TIFFIN ROOM IS FAR BETTER THAN A MORE CELEBRATED RESTAURANT # LOCATED NEARBY, AND ANOTHER LEGACY RESTAURANT IN BENGALURU WITH THE SAME INITIALS $
Mahalakshmi Tiffin Room is no frills, reasonable pricing, and genuine.
# VB
$ MTR
I love the way you eat and explain the taste of food.
This is one my fav food joints in Basavanagudi and a regular there. My fav being Khali Dose. Keep the the good work.
Again an excellent presentation. Kripal Amanna is the best food vlogger. It’s just not about the food, the awareness towards the establishment’s emotion and legacy add so much value to all his videos. Great job , Sir !!
Hello sir love that u have visited basavangudi. U should try our another best place in basavangudi is vaibhav hotel one of the best places to have ur breakfast and enjoy the hole day with the taste of the wonders
First is the best Vada and sambar dip and there are lots of others tiffin u should try it at once sir
Try this place sir ull be surprised
Excellent. These places deserve to be known by one and all and certainly deserves the respect for being kept up and running for so long. I have visited MTR many times but surprised that I didn't make it to this place having lived near Sajjan Rao Circle! May their tribe prosper and flourish. More power to you Kripal.
They certainly deserve the credit. Appreciate your kind words. 🙏
One of the best hotel for jains and marwadi families and good for tummy mainly no soda and artificial colours I visit regularly which reminds my college days
The clenteile was for decades The Kannada Vegetarian communities Brahmins Lingayats Vaishya Shettys plus other non veg local communities too in vegetarian mood
Jain Marwadi clientiele is a recent phenomenon
I too used to frequent this hotel 6 years back, before moving to my native place. Very deciplined management and staff. No compromise in quality or service. God bless them.
I have very good memories of this hotel and makes it special for me to go back to Mahalakshmi tiffin room❤
Thanks for the video sir.I have a list of eatries to visít when v come to India . You have given us the best must tryies ,thank u so much . regards from Mel Australia . Happy Diwali .
Lovely! Happy eating, Mel!
Mr.kripal i yearned you to visit this eatery for its Gandhi bazaar Great food Gem of a place thanks
Finally, you visited MLTR, my go to hotel for Kaali Dose, I had actually requested you to visit this place long back when you had put a tweet about places that you hadn't visited yet and wanted some suggestions, and along with me, many others had mentioned about this hotel too, happy that you tried all the dishes and especially the Kaali Dose, happy eating.👍🙂
Kripal sir is back to his Old Style of Content 🔥
Yes These are the kind of vlogs he began with
Hope he doesn’t wilt under the pressure of bigger fancier establishments who may be aiming to have him just to see a boost in their sales
Vintage classic place 👍
True!
Wow! Love your show. Should visit Mahalakhmi Tiffin Room very soon and it will be No.1 eat out in India..
I have enjoyed eating in this hotel since 1967.! Even now when we are in Gandhi Bazaar, a visit to Bhattara hotel for Khali Dose is tempting. For a long time it was NCC hotel for National College Students, encashing their tokens.
👌👍👋👋 Thank you Kripal Bhai
Kripal sir, Nice to see you are in Basavangudi, which is famous food and culture enjoy it ❤❤
I want to taste Khali dose
😋 looking smart mouth watering 🌹
One of my go to hotels in basvangudi. Set dose and carrot halwa are my fav😊
Nice Good,Happy Deepawali to everyone, Jay shree Ram 🇮🇳🚩🙏🙏🙏
Excellent content as usual!! Please cover Mahalakshmi Refreshments in Mahalakshmi Layout, that's also very very legendary
Mahalakshmi Refreshments is legendary 👍🙏🏾
Every saturday we dont miss ....Hot poooriiii...set dose....idli and vade with family...
Poori and White Saagu is bestest, and even masala dose@@iampassed
I thought this was that one only. Mahalaxmi layout.
I also enjoy visiting MLTR. love the idli/vada, Kali dosa.
When you see such establishments you can appreciate the contibution of South Kanara especially Udupi district to the culinary experience of the State
Kripal Great Question when you asked about sustaining the business what is amazing is 98 years old. If you look at today's industries or multinationals running over century old. This is only in FOOD Enterprises where you had showcased Delhi and few in TamilNadu and Karnataka. We must keep such tradition alive wishing this place will continue the current century hoping to see such places continue to flourish 🙂
That’s true, these culinary legacies should be nurtured for future generations too.
Your discription of the dishes make me crave for these dishes and I feel more hungry, but alas we can't tase these delicious foods as we don't get it here in Delhi 🙏
GOOD VEDIO FOR FOOD LOVERS THANK YOU SIR
Kaali Dosa, idly vada sambar and sagu dosa are redefined
ಈ ಟಿಫಿನ್ ರೂಮ್.. U must visit around 8.30. Morning.... The only one hotel i visit continually from last 15 years.... Dip idly and poori are jus jus amazingly awesome... Un beatable 🙏🙏🙏
Used to be a frequent visitor to this hotel( about 3 times a week minimum). But stopped going due to the arrogant and pathetic service by the servers. Don't know whether the owners are more arrogant or the service staff.
In today's world labor is biggest challenge faced in food industry, you cannot say a word to worker, tomorrow you should be ready to work in his place
The Pre Independence Era restaurants of Bangalore such as Vidyarthi Bhavan and Bramhins are overhyped and score low on the Customer Service Quotient.
The insolence of the staff is something that needs to be detested.
Mahalakshmi does slightly better.
Enjoy the tiffin at this old tiffin center and keep your palate satisfied and soul very happy Great to visit these small eatery
Somehow missed this place all these years. I will visit this soon. Hotel dwaraka's khali dose is famous too
Mate also be prepared to face their rude servers whenever you visit.
We’ve featured Dwarka Hotel in a previous episode, here’s a link to the episode th-cam.com/video/QetDuAGoYSw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B6iVVIPxU4IZEfQ_
Very tasty and typical Bangalore old hotel which has to be visited
I love this place more than Vidyarthi Bhavan. VB is too crowded and taste for me is overrated (nowadays). MTR gives me a slice of life from my childhood. Old decor and vibe.
Fantastic presentation Sir!
1st 🎉 happy deepawali to all food lovers 🎉🎉
Thank you, Happy Deepavali to you and your loved ones too!
Another vlog digging out the old treasures😊 Happy Diwali
Vlog *
Happy Deepavali to you too!
@@dan2009009, edited. Thanks
Whole of 2026 must be celebrated eating here once in a wk
Would like request kripala sir to visit Kolkata and places around it where we have tiffin cabins as we call them here which are more than 100 years old 🙏🏼
It is really great to run hotel close to vidyarthibhavan.
Mouth watering khali dosae....happy deepavali...🎉
That's the taste of ಬಸವನಗುಡಿ one of the best place for simple food friends meet up and for a family timepass also....🎉
One of the best Hotel
Very Nice Vlog !! Old Treasure, Food Looks Amazing.
Hope this establishmet lasts for generations to come
To create something new, is very easy. But to maintain a Legacy is very difficult. Power words!!!
Traditional establishments should keep going.
VISHNU BAHAWAN ON K G ROAD WAS FAMOUS FOR BREAD JAM, THEY ARE THE INVENTERS ❤❤
Sorry to correct, it is not Goli Bhaje. We call it Uddina Ambade in South Canara.
Love your videos. Thanks ❤
We pray god to give the strength to run these great restaurants
Like genuineness of the owner.
Good evening dear Kripal - At the outset I would like to wish you and your loved ones and the FL team a Happy Diwali 🪔🪔🪔💥💥💥⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I saw some snippets of this Vlog along with mixed comments from your viewers. Anyways for me if you go to a place your review is absolutely 100% authentic and candid . I simply love the BTS - Kitchen tour and that provides a lot of insight into their culture. Time for the investigator to get more information on the ingredients and process . Glad that the owner is able to honestly explain et al . Great that their focus is on modernisation and hygiene ( dishwasher as an example) . The fact that the establishment is a century old is a testament to their quality , hygiene and service 👍 Fans galore as usual and suggestions from Patrons are worth trying . So it’s Goli bajje to begin with and glad to watch you relish the dish . That’s a great combo of the tad sweet GB and a spicy chutney 😋😋 The size of the Idli and Sambhar is quite large. That would go well with the Ghetti chutney . Is the Sambhar more gravitating towards the Chennai style Sambhar ? . So now to their favourite Kaali Dosae with Palya , chutney and Sambhar 👌👌 There were so many comments which mentioned that it’s kind of “cardinal sin” to have Dosae with the Sambhar as in the K region it’s Dosae with the chutney . For me and others in Mumbai or say TN , we can’t have Dosae without Sambhar and chutney. I am so glad that Mr Girish is the voice of the customers and accordingly caters to the customers . Wow this bread toast looks unique ( with Palya and Tomato jam ) . Never have seen this kind of dish before . Saw this clip on SM and was wondering how it would taste and glad that you relished it . Cool and time for desserts; Carrot Halwa ( typically home made texture , ingredients, preparation and flavour ) . So happy that you thoroughly enjoyed this MITR fare and a wonderful way to end the meal outing with a nice strong filter coffee ☕️ and a Goli Bhajje to go with it . Thoroughly enjoyed every frame of the Vlog . Honestly I detest all the folks who reviewed that this was a overhyped place . No ways as it has your stamp of authenticity and approval . Too good dear Chief ! Loads of love and respect 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
Happy Deepavali 🪔🪔 to you and your family too, Rajesh. This was certainly a special episode featuring a culinary institution that has done its best to remain faithful to traditions from yore. I personally feel it is important to encourage and nurture their remarkable service for future generations too. I am glad you enjoyed the tasty. Stay blessed. 🙏🙏
Super sir 👌👌👌👌👌
banana ketchup is a filipino favorite !
It’s still our social hangout place Kripal Sir
Wonderful!
Super Kripal. Thanks for this Episode.
Long back in 2012 I have visited this place

Nange kudaa! Another time.
Great 👍
What will you do to the remainings of your food after tasting?
I love owner humility
This is near my National College. I used to go almost daily in 1967 to 72 to drink water (As I couldn't afford to buy snacks)
Yes sir you are correct maintaining legacy is very very tough and difficult
Very nice hotel in Gandhi bazar
