Over 40 years ago, Mr. Chandrashekar, originally from Sasthan in Dakshina Kannada, had to wind up his long running restaurant in Shimoga during the emergency. Forced to once again begin from scratch, he chose a spot in Birur, then a sleepy village around 240 kilometres from Bengaluru to set up an eatery. Since then Birur has grown to a bustling trading town, the spot where his venture, Preethi Canteen stands, is now a busy highway. And this tiffin restaurant has been elevated to legendary status by its many patrons for whom a halt here is a must when on the road around here. Over time, I have received many requests to taste their iconic masala dosae, and so on a recent drive to Shimoga, I stopped here and caught not just a taste of their tasty fare, but also a conversation with its second generation owner, Mr. Prakash Holla on what makes Preethi Canteen a hugely popular culinary institution.

How wonderful to trace most of the hotels owners origin and history into udupi manglore belt...sure they have given a structure to karnataka hotel menu and streamlined it😊 (staying in chennai since last one year and missing karnataka style grainy idly and sambar badly)

Food is good as rated,
What was fascinating was incredible service given to people who have food in car,
We had ghee dosa and the staff brought tissue to wipe the fat off the fingers and also hot water to wash hands - without even asking for. Pro active and very family friendly, This is five star hotel pit stop for me

Masala Puri at Bhatru Paani Puri was really good, but now permanently closed.
PS: I am a Maharashtrian and my partner is from Madburu, Chickmanglur but schooling was done in Shimoga.

Ders a small eatery IN TARIKERE just 20 kms from here, it's called the dosa hotel. Sri ram Darshini , old legendary taste.
Kripal, you missed meeting the other owner Deepu who is also very down to earth person. Preeti canteen food is really good needless to stay. People travelling on that road plan for their timing and enjoy their tiffins. Their staff are very well mannered and give good service.
