- The Chaika GAZ-13 model was produced by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics at the Saratov plant. I got my copy from my friend Sergei. It was sold by the Nowoexport company, among others, to the countries of Western Europe. The model was made with great accuracy and attention to detail. It had all the doors open and the tailgate. You can turn on and off the subtitles in your language in the video.
In order to implement this project, I had to complete the missing thresholds and roof pillars in this model. Thanks to the collector Joachim from Germany, I was able to copy the rear lamps and some chrome decorations. The making of the box by me was only possible thanks to Alexei, who sent me very carefully dimensioned photos of the original packaging from many sides. This project was very laborious. It took me over a month to make it. It was associated with multiple grinding and filling in defects in the car body. I had to do it very carefully because the model is painted black like every diplomatic limousine. The black color highlights all the shortcomings. I know this model from my childhood. I have seen him many times during state ceremonies in Poland and during visits of statesmen. I also presented a photo from the visit of the President of France Charles de Gaulle in September 1967 to Poland. About 30 years ago while working on a TV documentary in Russia I had the pleasure in riding in a Chaika 13 and also a Zil (or Zim?) convertible limousine, so this video brought back some memories for me. I was very impressed by your re-construction and profiling of the door cills. Surely one of your best model restorations.

I love the Saratov models, and this is one of their finest. Your careful and skilled restoration brought it fully back to its former glory.
Many say, jokingly, that the Saratov models were of significantly better quality than the real cars they represented, and in many ways they are fully on par - and in some cases even better - than the western models of the time with features like chrome hubcaps, opening rear doors and lots of chrome inserts.
Their one big enemy was metal fatigue, which has been the bane of many of their cars. Some models are not affected at all, while for others it is present in large percentages of the production. Personally I have two of this GAZ 13, one in perfect condition, and the other totally crumbled, bought for next to nothing just for the spares and for studying the decay. The GAZ 13 is one of the Saratov models most badly affected by fatigue, another is the Moskvitch 2141 "Aleko" (I have two different versions, both are brittle as biscuts)

Regarding the destruction of metal, we call it plague or distemper - these are different periods of making models. Models are almost not destroyed made before the early 90s. In the early 90s, with the collapse of the country and control over the quality of manufacturing, they stopped controlling the composition and amount of additives in the alloys from which the models were made. AZLK 2141 just started doing after the 90s. But mine is strong).
Certainly strong ones that have factory numbering on the bottom of the model: A1, A2, etc. Which has been cancelled looks like mid 80's.

Thank you for your comments. I've always had an interest in these models due to their level of functionality for their size, something which fetches comparably large sums of money from more well-known toy manufacturers of the time.
I have a GAZ 24 and having read about certain examples in peoples collections "decomposing" in their display cases i've always kept it in a dry place away from fluctuating temperatures, just in case.
I recently came across a 3102 at an automobilia exhibition and was tempted on getting it, but resisted in the end because it was a high price with bad paint and detached bonnet.

There is also a very rare factory modification of this model with luminous headlights and taillights. There were capacitors in the trunk to store electricity. Using this channel, I will try to explain the history and high quality of Soviet models: pay attention to the quality of manufacture of at least the wheel, from several parts and different materials.
At the end of the 60s, Dinky Toys for the first time in the world released a metal model in 1/43 "Moskvich - 408". For the Soviet industry, this was a real reproach. And since, in the absence of private entrepreneurs, in the presence of a planned economy, they were assigned to produce these models to one of the military factories in Saratov on the banks of the Volga River, associated with the aerospace and aviation industries, namely the production of radio electronics. The first models, "Moskvichi", very similar to the models from Dinky Toys, appeared closer to the first half of the 70s. Further, the models became more complicated with their detailing: for example, the VAZ-2102, an analogue of the FIAT - 124 Familiare, had a three-piece engine, a separate rear fifth door with separate glass and separate plastic taillights - you will not find the Familiare in this quality of those years . It could be made in this quality in Europe, but it would be very expensive for mass collecting. The price of 2102 was the same as that of simpler Muscovites: 3.50 rubles. This "Seagull"= Chaika was much more difficult, but cost not much more - 5.60 rubles. The average salary in the country was 120 rubles. Other more complex models cost about the same: for example, the Niva, in which the steering shaft turned the wheels. They did not increase in price - because the plant financed by state orders did not have the task of making a profit. There was pure creativity in the design and production of models. In addition, in the Soviet Union, large enterprises, including the military, were obliged to produce small products for retail sale in stores for the population. It was important, not pricing. That is, the models became complex disproportionately to prices that did not correspond to this complexity. The cost was offset by the huge budget of military orders. This is probably the only period in the world production of scale models, when artificial low prices and high quality workmanship allowed millions of people in our country to join the collection. Further, with the collapse of the country, factories were no longer required to produce products for the people, especially such complex and not calculated real costs. And the history of models that are common both for collectors and for children to play due to the price is over.
5.60р.стоила Волга ГаЗ-24. Чайка стоила в районе 10 рублей. А насчёт средней зарплаты.. Моя мать-медсестра в детской поликлинике, получала 180р. А отец-газоэлектосварщик, зарабатывал около 500р, без учёта "халтуры".И это далеко не на "северах"..

Можно заодно и с Чайкой сравнить: ну там , что у неё, у Чайки, да и у Москвича под капотом, из скольких деталей двигатель и почему дно такое же унылое( как Vassia), чем у ГАЗ-24? Европе в 90ые по возможно не пропускал автомодельные лавки. Если и были высококачественные модели 70/80ых годов - то они были достаточно дорогие и очень хрупкие. Вот смысл моего коммента, а не цена Чайки.
По зарплатам ты даже потрафил идее моего коммента: насколько модели были массовы благодаря своей цене.Но нет, оппонируя начинаешь приводить в пример зарплаты высоко оплачиваемых профессии и не понимаешь смысла понятия средней зарплаты по стране. У моей мамы было меньше 100руб . медсестрой в поликлинике. Она ушла на завод на 120 руб., где красила радиодетали для космоса и военной авиации и одновременно красила модели грузовиков "Камаз", отец еле еле с повышением в органах МВД офицером добрался до 200 руб. и это 70/80ые годы. У тебя скорее всего 80/90ые. Поспрашивай у других людей про 70ые ,чтобы ср.зарплату в своей семье не приравнивать к ср.зарплате по стране тех лет.
И вообще, цепляться за мелкости, а не за основную идею коммента . прятаться за ником, в котором нет реального имени (в моём есть) - удел ущербных в психологическом самочувствии людей. Решай, Васиа, эти проблемы каким то другим путём - не здесь.

I believe these cars were modelled on the last of the Packards - a very imposing vehicle. I saw a pair of them in a scrapyard in Georgia a few years ago. Brilliant surgery - you are the Christian Barnard of model recovery, Paul! Get another one: do it in Red! The finish is terrific.

Да не держится она там,было две таких,на голый силумин покрашено!
В сравнении с другими отечественными моделями держится довольно хорошо, до сих пор в родной краске модель стоит на полке, несмотря на активную "эксплуатацию" в свое время :)

Wspomnień czar...ech.Mocno zmęczona ta "Czajka",tym większa radość za przywrócenie jej z niebytu.Sam w kolekcji posiadam ok.50 modeli odlewanych produkcji CCCP zakupionych na bazarkach i giełdach na początku lat 90-tych,od Russobałt-ów przez Waz-y,Gaz-y,Uaz-y itp do Zil-ów i Kamaz-ów.Z całej kolekcji tylko dwa modele są w fabrycznych opakowaniach,kupione na wycieczce w Bułgarii.To były czasy!Tym bardziej "chapeau bas" za przywrócenie świetności temu Gaz-owi 13 "Czajka".Pozdrawiam!

I've had tough paint on a couple of old Dinky toys. I find that if you go over the paint with a 3M Scotchbrite pad, it gives the surface a bit of 'tooth', which helps the caustic soda penetrate.
That's a beautiful, but horrendously complicated model - looks like three hands are required to reassemble it!
