    Hello everyone - A quick and dirty (no not like that!) video of my experience trying to 'better' the Edifier S2000 MKiii active speakers with a passive solution. I went for a £125 SMSL Bluetooth amp and the Triangle Borea BR02 speakers...the results...well have a watch!
    Equipment Used
    SMSL SA300 Bluetooth enabled amplifier
    Van Damme Blue Series Passive Speaker Cable
    Triangle Borea BR02
    Edifier S2000 Mk iii
    And yes...creating good sound clips of speakers playing music is a lot harder than I thought it would be! Might have to leave these types of videos to others!
    MUSIC FEATURED
    Steve Twinley - Side B: Lachesism (From the album 'Meet me on the moon'
    Check Steve out on Spotify and try the track on your own stereo!
    Special Thanks to Steve Twinley for the music used in this video and look out for him playing live in Horsham Surrey soon!

    These days, the convenience of being able to use bluetooth would outweigh a slight disadvantage in sound quality when compared to the passive speaker setup. The Edifiers support the Qualcomm aptX HD bluetooth audio codec and the sound quality is outstanding when connected to a compatible device. I have 2 pairs of the S2000MKIII speakers, one in the bedroom/office and the other set is in the living room.

    In the favor for active systems, most off them have DSP with speaker/driver correction. One of the benefits is there is an effort to make them sound the same playing them on low, mid and high volume. Passive systems have a sweet spot on the dial and in the case of (smaller) low sensitivity speakers, you kinda need to crank them up to make them come alive.

    I've always been curious about your room given your channel name.. Audiophile: confirmed!
    To be honest, my room looks similar! It's a cliché but the biggest upgrade I ever made was treating my room: impossible to over estimate the importance of room acoustics..

    Quick question for you! I’ve ordered a pair of these Edifiers and I currently own an ifi Zen Dac v2 for my headphones. Would you recommend going for the triangles BR03’s not sure which are better 02’s or 03’s (£299 in walnut currently) instead of the edifiers? They’ll be setup as monitor speakers. I hope that’s enough info but let me know if you need more. Thanks!

    I'm adding external speakers to my TV that my techno-phobic wife has to be able to operate, so I just ordered the S2000MKIII. My big stereo speakers can get too bassy for general TV use so I'm hoping the Edifers will be useable for all general TV programming. For music I can still fire up the big system for better sound.

    Love the listening room, cant wait for a video on it. I curious to see hear about why you have more diffusion rather than absorption. Also I dont see the Klipsch anymore, traded up to something nicer?

    • @SmallRoomAudio
      @SmallRoomAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I needed to sell them to get funds for the dynaudio heritage specials and a Mola mola Tambaqui - want to see if all the fuss is justified! The absorption thing is a funny one - used to almost have all absorption and imaging was super good, if a bit narrow (like the room) but wanted a bigger soundstage….spoke to GIK and they basically said I need to scatter more sound - so it’s mostly all aimed at absorption with scattering now, and it definitely feels bigger!

    • @dajikbatarang1
      @dajikbatarang1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SmallRoomAudio Did you trade up some pinpoint imaging for soundstage width?

    • @SmallRoomAudio
      @SmallRoomAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a little bit - it’s all compromise really. The good thing about the panels is you can turn them around and they turn back into pure broadband absorbers, so it’s possible to flavour the room for different setups. Could only do this in a dedicated room, if I put panels in the living room my wife would kill me!

    5:43 vs 6:31 check out the plucks and slides. Enough said. Btw, was it with the DAC in the sound clip? Also, which one plays louder without distorting? This has got to be the best comparison in youtube for powered vs separates! Also, 5:09 vs 5:58

    • @SmallRoomAudio
      @SmallRoomAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark, no DAC32 added in this comparison sound clip, just straight to the SMSL SA300. Adding the dac really does take it up a notch though for sure! Loudness I would hand to the passives - just because the port chuffing from the Edifier gets a bit much when pushed

    • @-MarkWinston-
      @-MarkWinston- 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SmallRoomAudio was the Eds in Monitor mode or Dynamic? Port chuffin aside, which you reckon would go louder before it crackles? The SA300 is a great mini amp, but for separates we could alway go a notch or 3 higher with different amps like the DA-9 or even the SA400 and stuff :)

    • @SmallRoomAudio
      @SmallRoomAudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had them in classic (which was my preferred sound setting, similar to dynamic but a bit less in your face) I think both go pretty loud, but it’s a tricky test for me to do as I don’t need a lot of volume before my room becomes absolutely saturated! More watts with the passives will get you more bang for sure in the long run though!

    • @-MarkWinston-
      @-MarkWinston- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SmallRoomAudio awesome! Seriously, thank you for putting this passive vs active topic to rest, at least for now. The passives sounds wat better to me, and that is without that el cheapo DAC that will transform it into another beast that the S3000Pro, A100 and even the A300Pro will never achieve!

    The triangles sell for $730 on their own here in Australia, edifiers i picked up for $400 here, the edifiers seem to be far cheaper in oz? unsure why? like the comparable Klipsch there $1200, i guess if u add the rest of the equipment u wld be round $1000, its a big price hike.

    That Edifer is not an Active speaker, only one of them is , the other one is passive. That is not what i mean when i say Active speakers.
    You can get a proper Active speaker for half the price also , so that Edifier is not budget either.
    So for sure its not Budget Active speaker . its just a scam
