    Hi mike living in state we have to cover our load.
    I haul firewood for my self often and what works really good is a piece of chainlink fense.
    Put it on a pole ,metal or wood and hook the front then use a tiedown for the back,reson being the chain link conforms to anything you haul.

    Hey Mike, thanks for the video, and thanks for loading your trailer safely. As a motorcyclist I always appreciate it when people load their truck or trailer safely. Trust me, there are a lot of people who don’t. Sometimes a tarp is appropriate and sometimes it’s not necessary. Personally, I think it’s one of those things that is better controlled with good sense rather than laws. Be safe and have a day!

    Hi Mike , In my rental property business the biggest demander of tarping is the landfill, (possible fines ) the gravel and mulch yards dont require but local PD’s watch for it , I’m not a big tamper but i know that time I’m not expecting PD could pull me over , As you may remember I was From Butler until age 11, I know the State police barracks just below the high school complex about half way up hill , Elmer and wife ( the roller skating rink in the 60-70’s ) My dad was principle at High school when Terry Bradshaws #2 Hanraty was a student , My dad said he was a character , Kerr’s appliances where i think the mall is know , we used to live on LAKEWOOD DRIVE , it has its own lake , our DOT officer with the local PD has mentioned to me about getting DOT#’s for my truck , has something to do with pulling a trailer a deriving income from it, even though I only used my 8 or more trailers to supplement the property management of my own rentals , I still remember Troutmans Store , the ford dealer at the top of the hill in town before the downside to go over the bridge out of town thru the mills , Kelly Chevy out of town , US STEEL , ARMCO, Pullman steel . (HOME OF THE FIRST AND ORIGINAL JEEP ) moved to Coatesville Pa at age 11 1974 , BE safe

    Mike, as a retired WV trooper who also worked for the WV PSC for a while after retirement, a tarp law can be a local ordinance but is not a state statute or federal regulation. The only time you need to tarp a load is to prevent sifting or loss of of transported materials due to wind or vibration; if you are losing material while driving down the road the citation in WV is for Insecure Load. I have an old friend who worked as a PA trooper doing DOT inspections and, as well as I can remember, the PA statutes were similar. As long as material is not coming off the load you should have no problems.

    Mike that is a nice machine. It’s just the right size to get some serious work done, yet small enough to get in and get around easy. I love it. You know, that thing about needing a tarp. You’re right. You don’t need one for firewood. I’ve drove big rig for 35+ years and never heard of that. I’ve tarped lots of loads when I was flat bedding. So you’re right on what that trooper told you. We love your videos Mike and Melissa 👍👍👍❤️

    Thanks for the tarp info. Large dump trucks that haul gravel have a tarp that automatically covers the whole truck top which I’ve seen. The main thing is secured your load. One time I was on the expressway and a van with ladders on top was getting on and I said for precaution I will change my lanes because I don’t know how well those ladders were tied down. As soon as the van got on the expressway the ladders fell off of it good thing I was in the other lane and had plenty of distance. The semi behind the van was slamming on his brakes. So beware to play it safe stay away from Vehicles that are carrying stuff. Just look on the side of the expressway and you’ll see all kinds of stuff that falls off. Be safe

    Nice to know you looked into the legality about tarping the load. That said, my views on a number of things changed after I got my motorcycle. Now I cover all my loads. I just imagine hitting a bump in the road and having something come out in front of a motorcycle. While I may not be legally responsible if that guy on the bike is dead or in a wheelchair his/her whole life, I’m certainly not going to rest easy knowing I could have easily prevented the whole thing with a 2 minute task like securing the load with a tarp.
    My 2 cents. As usual, keep the change! 😂
    Keep up the great work, Mike! And say, “hey” to the Huntman!👍

    Weather report from the western edge of North Dakota. 20 degrees and not a breeze. Sun is shining, it was pretty much overcast the whole time the Arctic Clipper went through. It subsided about 9 p.m. last night. The Flappers in my exhaust vents stop there insomnia inducing noise about 8:30. They close down I-29 from North Dakota to Iowa through South Dakota most of yesterday. Other than that, slept like a baby last night. Have a day!
    I always enjoyed running a backhoe or an excavator ever since I was a roustabout in the oil field, around Dickinson, in my twenties. In 76 I applied and got a position on the BN Railroad. Kind of like being in the military as far as seniority goes. Don't volunteer for anything! I talk too much. The foreman on a Monday morning, when it was climbing into the 90s already said, "I hear you have operated a backhoe before". Of course I rambled on about how much fun it was. "I have got a job for you..., the signal department has brought their backhoe down for the project". There's a fairly high grade between Chama and Sentinel Butte. It seems late Friday night 20 sheep escaped there enclosure and decided to take the easiest path to new pastures. You remember that temperature I mentioned earlier, yes the whole weekend! I buried a perfectly, brand new pair of gloves in that hole that day. The last thing the foreman said, as I left the Section House, "don't forget to count the heads".

    Hi Mike, I'm a retired Trooper from N.H. Pa. may be like N.H. in this regard, not widely understood. Your trailer if the gross weight of which is over 3K pounds is required to have an inspection (with a sticker) for lights, brakes and so on. As far as the cover goes, it may prevent spillage if you were moving material that could easily blow out. Hope this helps. Best to you and yours.

  • @joebledsoe257
    @joebledsoe257 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only time a tarp is required here (TN) is if the stuff you're moving "can" blow out of the truck or trailer. Applies to natural things like tree leaves too. However if you're uncovered or covered and if anything comes out you are responsible for any damages to anyone else's stuff. We love the Simpli-Safe, it took me 30 minutes to do the entire house, storage building and gates.

    Mike I found this with Google search I thought Illinois law was any loose load abave the side walls had to be tarped & I was surprised to find I was wrong because Illinois pretty much likes to make laws about everything. I do know for sure the city dump (Springfield) will not accept a load unless it's tarped. Which makes since to keep papers & stuff from blowing out. It seems to me it is probably wisest to tarp any loose load just for liability reasons.
    Federal Regulations for Cargo Securement
    Regardless of whether or not a state has a law stipulating tarps for cargo securement, the federal government does. Furthermore, commercial truck drivers are mandated to follow the regulations of the FMCSA above all others. Those regulations state that a securement system, such as tarps and tiedowns, must be used whenever necessary to protect a load.
    To be compliant, keep up to date with both your home state and federal rules. In addition, take into consideration specific rules in states where your fleet frequently travels.

    Hi Mike, I roll the dice too, my loads are heaped higher then yours, I've never lost any and never been bothered by local authorities for it. However I was told by HP that if my lost cargo causes an accident I would more than likely get sighted for unsecure load even if it was tarped or strapped because the way they look at it is if it fell off it obviously wasn't secure enough, basicly someone has to be sighted for the accident and would still be blamed on my load.
    MY dump box has a handy factory roll up netting that's simple and fast to use, but I rarely use it.

    Hi, Mike...
    Even without knowing the exact requirement for tarping, my feeling is that it's a good idea for safety/liability reasons, entirely apart from the law.
    I've found that a cargo net is more convenient than a tarp for containing pieces of a load of whatever you're hauling. They're made of bungee cords, so will stretch to cover any shape, they have hooks on all corners plus additional hooks along the sides for secure coverage. The only problem is that if you're not careful when you put it away, you end up with a real tangled mess the next time you want to use it.... Gary

    Hi Mike, Some states have regulations about covering loose content in the trailer such as this one from NY: It is unlawful to operate any open truck or trailer transporting loose materials, unless the truck or trailer has a cover, tarpaulin, or other device that covers the opening on the truck or trailer to prevent the falling of any material. However, if the load is arranged so that no loose material can fall from or blow out of the truck or trailer, the covering is not necessary. PA doesn't appear to have this rule. trailers.com covers the regulations in every state.

  • @newenglander4513
    @newenglander4513 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    In Australia, we are required to cover the load no matter what it is. Some use cheap plastic tarps but most use the more durable safety net type. Some of these have a stretch cord right around the edge to attach on to hooks around the trailer or Ute (Pick-Up). Others have a number of ratchet straps built in which can be tightened down more.
    I never used them at all until one day I'd bought a three ton truckload of wood into town, unloaded it, and on the way back out, I saw a block of wood sitting in the middle of an intersection on the State Highway I was travelling! Yes, it was one of mine, so from that day on I covered all my loads no matter what. Imagine if that block had bounced and went through someones windscreen at 50 mph?
    My advice Mike is unless you are just going down to a neighbours place not far away is to "tarp up". It might be a nuisance having to do it, and not required by law, but even so, just for piece of mind.

    Mike,
    I’m sure the DOT rules vary from state to state much like they do here in the north between provinces. I know in Ontario, for instance, if the load is above the walls of the trailer (if it’s a loose load item like firewood) then a tarp is required. I’d suspect folks are commenting with the knowledge of the rules in their area not taking into account they may vary by region.
    Stay safe

    Cool start to the video today Mike scratching piant off the 4 foot bucket cool. Goodmorning Morgans and everyone watching. Again great start to the video that would have been a perfect time to have Melissa learn more on the excavator. Here in New Mexico we have to tarp a trailer when any loose material is to high in a trailer. Great video Mike and thanks for sharing see you tomorrow

    whether it is required by law or not i found it best to be safe than sorry, you may think a log is a little too heavy to fall off a trailer but i've seen a piece of wood like a split log and it flipped a car on the highway... since then any time i use my trailer for any reason, i always put a tarp over it, but at the end of the day anything you carry could fall of and be a potential hazard on the road, from a rock the size of a marble to a barrel, its down to the operator/owner of the trailer to make sure the content is secured safely...
    also thinking about it, what would the insurance claim be if and i say if a log fell off and say went through a persons windscreen, or flipped their car? is it really worth the risk?

    When I bought my dump trailer (in NC) the tarp wasn't on the trailer, it was offered as an "option". I took the option and put one on it because I figured it couldn't hurt, a "better safe than sorry" kind of thing.

    Mike I get a kick out of you tractor with its little bucket on the AW900 our small bucket is 54 yard the uncle had a 100 yard bucket made how much #3 could you spread to cover your ground with one bucket, stand is loving it build the new roads on the property in Wyoming first he uses the D12 with 25 ft blade to cut then the AW900 to clean up the road using the 54 bucket, he's like a puppy with you know what it's kind of funny he's 72 years young looks alot like Sam Eliot but with what he's using now he's 16 again its great.

    The excavator looks great Mike, I wouldn't worry so much about a tarp on firewood. I know up here in NY we need to tarp our construction debris. I would look into the weight ratings on you truck and trailer. I have herd of some nightmares with people getting weight tickets with 1/2 ton trucks with dump trailers!

    Did you try the long bucket on the firewood ?
    Tarping a load is different in every state and different on what's carried and if its commercial or small business and private citizen in every state.
    Like with any law or activity just because you cant do it in your state doesn't mean you cant do it in another.

  • @streetrodder2846
    @streetrodder2846 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The tarping of loads varies from one jurisdiction to another. Here in Washington it's a county thing. Some landfills will not allow you to enter to dump your load of garbage unless it is tarped.

    Good morning all! Now that the holiday rush has settled, I’m starting to think about farm projects again. For one, I’m going to acquire a pole saw to help trimming back from fences. Fighting my way in to the trunk of a honey locust, Osage Orange, or even a cedar tree isn’t fun, and getting to the base of a bunch of multiflora rose stems isn’t either. I’m looking forward to fixing some of that. I had a guy dump some base rock and cover it with the crusher run around our shed, and he left me a stockpile of each, so that project can happen. I need to get the power line to the well house buried, and get power extended to the shed. With the money from the logging comes the ability to get some things done!
    I noticed you switched back to the 30” bucket to load the firewood. I also would like to see if the thumb can hold it in the 48” bucket.

    I think you will wind up using that 4 foot smooth bucket a lot, it is very handy. I find having a plate compactor is also very handy but you can compact quite well with the back side of either of your buckets. As long as all your lights and brakes are working you probably won’t get stopped for not having the load covered....although I’m basing that on the way the normal world used to be.

    i did mention about the tarp with the tree pieces falling from the guys truck in front of me but also like you said the guy was kind of over loaded but here in Florida in majorities of the county it is the law mainly because of scrappers over loading and loosing stuff on the road also gravel stone every thing that is can not be totally tied down need's a tarp and if you want to make sure of things ask your insurance company what they got to say
    On #978 i mention a little something about your saw dust i also wanted to mention if you got plenty of slat and that apply to all if you got a bad wet area { or a small swampy area } you can use those across your road next to each other to make kind of a bridge you put a couple of row thick and cover every thing with the saw dust but it is also good to put a"calvet" or pipes for draining from one side to the other
    i am new to your video and yes i do like them

    hello Mike, We have thought of getting a security system here on the farm, but just haven't found the right one. I will have a closer look to see how we can secure the barn, garage and the house all from the same base. You asked the community about laws regarding transporting trailers with cargo. In Manitoba, Canada we are required to cover the load with a tarp/mesh or something that will secure it and keep it in place. Long logs need to be strapped so they don't roll. Here is the link to the Manitoba regulations. web2.gov.mb.ca/laws/regs/current/_pdf-regs.php?reg=37/2005 I know that this is not the general rule of thumb for other provinces/territories and I am sure states are all different. Anyway, just thought I would share that.

    I mentioned the trap to you as a safety precaution on your behalf. You are a smart guy Mike, you take things to extent in pretty much what ever you do, this could be your Achilles Heel that takes you down. Hey, ask your insurance agent and what he thinks. As I've always said, "you ever love it or hate it, the internet that is". You expose yourself everyday showing what you do, so be extra careful. Accident chasers, chase the dollars!

    Here in So. Ca., only aggregate type material, if above the rim of the bed, needs to be tarped. With that said, every driver is responsible for their load, no matter what it is. Nothing can be in danger of falling out.

    Only on loose loads, like gravel/sand, do you have to have it tarped here in Texas. But you do have to have it secured.

  • @mitchp350
    @mitchp350 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The laws on that subject are different in different States, and Provinces here.
    Here in Nova Scotia, you could be fined with an unsecured load. But they have to prove that the load could blow out, or fall out without the tarp.
    We will just say for instance a piece of bark blows out, and is going towards an oncoming vehicle, said vehicle may think it is a rock and swerves to avoid it, causing an accident. We are really reaching all the what if's and maybe's but, there is a chance of being held responsible for said accident. But in most cases of this type, very hard to prove, and will be dropped.

  • @johnduncomb6171
    @johnduncomb6171 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    we have to cover any loose load, if it's something that may blow away a net will suffice, however firewood, stone, etc must be tarped. The reason being it only takes one piece of wood, stone through a windscreen to cause a fatality. You do what you are comfortable with.

    That tarp law probably changes from state to state. Many years ago, we used to have tractor trailors that would haul steel from NYC to the plants in our town that didn't want to go back empty. So they would come up to our operation & we would fill them up with firewood and they always covered them up with tarps. However, we never did that when we were delivering! That was upstate NY.

    I drove a dump truck here in IN. Its a local thing some cities have laws that all loads have to be tarped some dont, as far as the state I dont think it's a law our company to be safe required us to tarp all loads. But all we had to do was flip a switch so was no big deal. But these poor guys with the transfer trucks going to the dump that was by hand !!!!! And landscapers had to tarp everything in the city close by here. You sure Love that excavator don't you? I would too. Have a day Mike

  • @hpelisr
    @hpelisr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, might be by state. I know from working on construction sites that the dumpster's can't be higher than the top edge. That's called the spill level, the trucks have a tarp system that rolls back to cover load. Especially if they are running the interstate. If anything comes out and hits someone or damage, they are liable.

      I believe that is true too that it's a state-by-state situation.
      However any load that is above the sides of a trailer, I would just think that common sense justifies using some kind of netting or tarp to prevent a piece coming loose...... if you hit a pothole. I've seen stuff bouncing off a trailer before and going down the highway at 55+ mph, that log bouncing up and going through somebody's windshield could kill them!

    you need a tarp over a load In Ontario the only time no is if its prewrapped like lumber lifts ( we are talking trailers ) 1/2tonners do what they want . Also hauling machinery like farm tractors and excavators you need binders and chains and the number is depended on the weight . I'd stop at a weigh scale and ask they will tell you . Be safe

    Hey mike just a recommendation when loading your dump trailer with stone or dirt if at all possible try to have your truck and trailer parked the other way that way your swinging over the back of the trailer instead of over the backside of the truck just in case anything falls out of the bucket while the machine is turning

  • @PabloP169
    @PabloP169 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, different jurisdictions have different requirements regarding load restraints. In Oz some states mandate covering a load, others don't, but in any of them if you lose any part of the load then expect a heavy fine. One state even mandates the length of a rope or strap that can be left unsecured, go figure.
