Beekeeper here. In the UK, all honey is raw (which is why our beloved podcaster’s honey is a bit crystalized), but in the US, most honey is heat treated in order to filter it more finely and stop the (normal, harmless) process of crystalization by removing nucleation sites. This also destroys the antimicrobial properties. So, if in the US, make sure your honey is labeled as ‘raw’. Oh, and honey is the second most faked food in the world, so maybe try to buy from a neighbor. If you don’t know the beekeeper, how do you know it is real honey? Oh and Mr. Sheffield, if you prefer your honey less crystalized, keep it in a gently warm place, like the cabinet on top of your fridge, or stand the jar in warm water, under 110 degrees F, this will make it runny again without hurting the natural antimicrobial properties. Praise bees!

I did a wreath ring for my Hoya. Put some fairy lights around it and it’s a beautiful feature in the windowsill. It flowered this year. I’m very reluctant to allow any plant that roots from the stem anywhere near my walls, I’ve witnessed what an orchid aerial root did to a glazed plant pot. I had an outbreak of thrips, used a lint roller on every plant leave, nuked them with a spray, now I have parasitic bugs to help kill any.

Thank you, great video! I’ve never had chopsticks strong enough that I want to unpair, so use an aluminium knitting needle instead, plus use them as stakes too. Thrift stores usually have knitting needles.
Very educational and entertaining video! The avocado cutting has been dead for 3 days and I haven't seen any signs of life. It's completely black or dark brown. But it's still hydrated and doesn't smell at all. I'm 99% it's a combination of Pythium and Phyphthora fungus that killed the cutting. It got severly infected 2 weeks ago while I was gone for 3 days. Even if I change the water 3-4 times a day and add chamomile and fungicide continuously, it won't matter much. At this point, the fact that there's some firmness and hydration on the bottom portion on the cutting can be considered as a small victory. But it's not alive and I'm never growing avocado trees ever again, unless the cutting survives, which obviously won't.

The rope in the self-watering system ideally shouldn't be organic material since it decays quickly. Instead use a microfiber cloth that you cut into strips ^^ and be careful with self-watering in combination with soil/ organic substrates
I actually bought pots that have organic ropes for self watering pretty much like Mr Sheffield’s made here. I’ve had them for about a year and I’ve never had a problem with them.

The problem with some of these hacks is they work contrary to the very reason we have plants: to make our homes more attractive. I don’t think, clever as the idea may be, that I want sawed off Pepsi bottles scattered throughout my living room.
Using fabric scraps, you can glue them to the bottom part of the bottle where the pot is and it gives it some character, it’s simple, easy and makes the dome look cute!
I am confused. You keep showing humidifiers when discussing misting and water dishes, which are not helping with humidity. Humidifiers are verifiably effective at changing the humidity in your home. Obviously the size of the unit and the space you are using it in matters, just as it would with grow lights. Is it just a visual choice or have you not had any luck with humidifiers?
I love your videos but seeing all that perlite in your potting mix makes my hairs stand on end after a horrendous few months battling white root mealybugs which had spread, unknown to me, to every single pot in my house and veranda, often completely invisible on the soil surface (like my 2 metre tall money tree which seemed to be thriving but was absolutely chokka with the little devils, their children and grandchildren). When they get to the surface, they look just like perlite which I used to use. I had to completely remove all the plants from smaller pots and clean the roots under the tap but just removed as much soil as poss from said money tree and soaked in Albagarden Homeopathic liquid (strongest dosage) as I did all the other plants' roots. Several treatments later, all the smaller pot plants are clear but fingers crossed for the money tree. So now, a bit of potting compost mixed with a lot of the tiniest dark brown clay balls, black gravel and your trusty black charcoal (in small pellets) and I can spot the mealybugs immediately in the completely dark soil. And weirdly the plants love the homeopathic treatment even when the bare roots were left soaking for 2 days during an emergency.
plants that are an ongoing pain are not worth keeping in my books. life is already complicated. to the bin and try to get plants that arent such a nuisance.

I purchased a cotton mop head at the Dollar Tree and use it for the self watering hack. Only $1.25 and you can make a lot of self watering systems.

I actually bought pots that have organic ropes for self watering pretty much like Mr Sheffield’s made here. I’ve had them for about a year and I’ve never had a problem with them.
