Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this funeral via video. I am a minister of a small non-denominational church here in the cornfields of Illinois. I appreciate the message - one like I would give - and the message in the congregational singing! God bless you and your family!
"I know I will be taking a lot of grief from TH-cam uploaders for taking this video, but Let me get one thing straight up front this is my family not yours! Otherwise the amish do not appreciate photographers taking their photos just so you know." The entire family of God is my family. Hence, thank you for taking this video and blessings to you.
I am sorry for your loss. I am reminded of the saying to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. We will one day be reunited with our loved ones and all praise God on that glorious day
After watching awhile and seeing the grave service, I finally realized that this was the funeral for Bertha who married my Gross Dawdi John Yoder after the death of my grandma. I have watched it a number of times now and am so thankful that you shared. I see many relatives from my mother and father's families. I figured out after talking with my mother, that she and your mother are 1st cousins. What a small world.
S Nafziger your name threw me off but when you said Petershiem that changed everything! Wow! Now you are making me curious you say the Oakland Maryland Church is no longer considered Old Order Amish? When did this all come about? I myself was raised Amish till turned nine years old when my folks joined the Amish Mennonite car church.
Simon Kinsinger My cousin L. Vaughn had replied earlier and her maiden name was Petersheim. She can answer the questions about the church. I was never a member there. I just have relatives that attend there :)
Hi, I lived one hour from Lancaster Pa and I'm very familiar with the Amish and I Was Surprised that the service wasn't in German I thought it would have been.Thank you for giving us a glimpse into Amish life apart I have never seen.My deepest Condolences.
thanks for sharing. as a funeral director, i always appreciate funeral customs. with all respect to family and friends and honor and dignity to the deceased.
Thank you for sharing these precious moments..... By filming this event, you are preserving a little bit of Anabaptist liturgical music & culture for future generations. Thank you.
Living amongst the Nebraska Amish here in Mifflin county PA, I have been blessed to have been to an Amish viewing and funeral as well as many other events, I am a lucky english to be so close with so many families. Nothing but admiration, well done!
You will get no grief from me. I have nothing but respect for the Amish, and I am a Congregationalist. They are welcome in my church at any time, as I know that I am in theirs.
They do not have churches. They worship in each other's homes....and I highly doubt they would be very happy if some stranger showed up at their worship service uninvited.
kay jay You are partly right and mostly wrong the Amish are just like any other protestant group in that there are the STRICT AMISH, Moderate Amish and Conservative Amish. This group is both! But if you really want to know you should become a part of the Amish it would be an enlightenment for you!
kay jay The Amish I grew up with will except anyone who conforms to their strict dress code race is a none issue. I know you say you don't believe in Gods but there is only one living God and unless you gave yourself life you will go back to the God that created you! What's worse the bible states it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God! It would seem such a shame for that to happen to a nice person like you!
Amalgamaite Umm...look at my nose and lips. Those are black features...Lol! You have never met a black woman that looks like me...well then you have never met my mother, sister and grandmother. If this was 1860 in the South...I would still be a slave.
A man named Jim Shaw renounced freemasonry. He published the date when each cardinal in the 1950s was initiated into grand orient freemasonry. They took over the papacy in the election of 1958 by coercion. You can learn about this online I'll not try to find it for you. One of the best series has the word "imposter" in it and gives many details and testimonies of those involved.
Thank you Simon for sharing this video,God Bless you....And I was raised in Western New York,Jamestown, and on our way to Camp in Cattaraugus there were several Amish Farms, always loved to see the Buggy's on the road, again thanks for sharing, loved how this man spoke, beautiful singing,of course singing to the Lord is always beautiful
Simon, Please accept my condolences on the passing of your Aunt Bertha. The very real beauty of the service and burial is in the simplicity and quiet way things are done in such a personal way. Thank you for sharing this with us, I think in the film is an example of what may have been lost to the wider world and on what is most important.
Deepest sympathy. For your loss! I have always wondered about Amish. Funeral were like and now i know! Thank you! May you have peace in your time of loss! And your futures always be full of peace and happiness! With much love and repect to all of you!
I'm actually from this community and my parents are still members of this congregation. Many of the people shown at the grave sight are my dear Uncles, Aunts and cousins. They are not Old Order Amish and have electricity in their homes as well as in the church building- it was not because of building code. Thanks for sharing!
L Vaughn wow it is a small world! You are aware John Yoder's 1st wife was my great Aunt Beverly and his second wife Bertha Kinsinger Zook Yoder was my father's oldest sister and also my aunt!
Simon Kinsinger Actually John N. Yoder's first wife was Barbara (Peight). Did you mean Barbara or Beverly? They were both originally from the Kishacoquillas Valley in PA. They were my grandparents.
Sorry I'm not Amish ,but I like Amish people their so friendly and Respectful people ,I love the way they teach their young kids to respect every one.Any way thank you for sharing this video GOD bless you all
Farmers don't need much more than that. Any one of those kids is free to go get more education if they feel they really want and need it. No one is forcing anyone to do anything..
And their kids know how to work and make their own way. Higher education doesn't seem to be paying off nowadays, exorbitantly expensive, no related job after graduation, mountain of student loan debt. I'll wager these Amish kids can read and do arithmetic in circles around the average HS grad, and earn a living in the process.
You do realize the Amish are self-sustaining, right? If we lost electrical power for 6 months, could you survive? The Amish would be perfectly fine. Also, almost every Amish home and farm I've seen are beautiful and kept up meticulously. I'm college educated and know I would NOT be fine through a 6 month electrical outage and my home is nowhere as nice as many of theirs. I think they're much more intelligent than most of us.
I wish the whole world could just be and live like the Amish💖💖💖💖 I would love living like this but I'm black so I'm sure I'm not welcome😔 but I would love if you all would please pray for my son Elijah 💖💖. He has a very rare bone cancer that only 2 people in the entire state of pennsylvania has ever had in 20 yrs. He is stage 4 and now is home with me under Hospice care. He is 19 yrs old.
Sure no problem! The Amish do not use a concrete vault instead, the coffin is made of Pine and set inside a ruff box which is installed when the grave is dug. After the pine coffin has been placed the last thing they have to do before closing up the hole with dirt is lay the wood slats on top of the ruff box to keep dirt off the coffin.
First of all had this been a normal service I would not have been allowed to film it! But in a normal service they have segregated seating, all german preaching and singing. The main reason for the exception is out of respect for those out of the area and out of state visitors who cannot understand german.
Amen! There is no way to paint death in a pretty picture! When our number is up it is over, done and so final! To be ready to go is the ultimate Blessing! I recall another one of my late aunts died with a smile on her face! :-)
I was moved by watching this. I remember at the funeral of a member of the church where I attend was put to rest in the church columbarium (it's like a cemetery but the ashes are put in niches) the final words of the minister was "Alleluia Christ is risen" and we responded "The Lord is risen indeed Alleluia!) it was the first time I felt joy at a funeral. Although there was sadness the hope of being a Christian really hit home. May the family of this person who passed feel the same joy and hope which the resurrection of Christ brings ti this who believe.
Here are the answers to your questions, yes the body is embalmed by a licensed professional, yes there is a viewing,No there is no wake or ritual, the clothes are a matter of choice by either the deceased or the family within the Amish standard, yes there is an Amish Undertaker who works in conjunction with a Licensed Mortician.
And this dear sister in the Lord awaits her Easter Morning. I would love to be at this cemetery when Christ returns and see His many Saints resurrected. What a precious video and community. May God richly bless. A brother in Christ.
If I may, I have a few questions to ask - what is done to the person after they have died (Special washing, embalming)? Is there a "Viewing" held before the funeral/burial to see the deceased one more time? Is there a "Wake", or mourning time/ritual? Are there special clothes the deceased wears? Is there an Amish Undertaker" in each community?
I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. May you find comfort in Jehovah God's word the Bible at Isaiah 25:8 where it's said that death and tears of pain will be gone.
.Mr. and Mrs.. I see episodes 1 to 4 the Amish Everything is beautiful in a natural life. I love the people of Good Create and respectful and beautiful. I love the house and the wood, cow and horse and family pretty boys and girls and men and women everything Are beautiful clothes. Black and white and beautiful smile. A woman in the house to cook something of the nature of her hand everything that a good health No electricity. No phone. Television. Any family feel comfortable.
Hello Simon. I am considering going to a Mennonite church in Arizona but I do not want to stick out too much...I know I will anyway. What should I wear that would be accepted by all Mennonites. Thank you in advance.
My grandpa was Pennsylvania Dutch and he spoke in a form of German and a few English thrown in...we understood what he said, he died when I was 7, I here it now and do not understand, I wonder why
The Amish where I live in PA do not hold their services in a building with lights, but in the home or outbuilding of the deceased family. The singing is the same but that's all.
This sure DOES NOT represent the Amish in Canada. Canadian OLD Amish would never meet in a building like this for any church service. They meet strictly in each other homes. And would Never under any circumstance allow a camera anywhere near them and they do NOT sing in English but their Pennsylvanian Dutch. How do I know mt father lives amongst the amish, the on English welcome as a hard workjer in the mill.
+julia hammond I'm sure they dont what you just described is called the Nebraska Amish. Most people are unaware there are also Amish Mennonites who drive cars. I know to the outsider it seems all very confusing. What you have to understand Amish is a Culture not a Religion.
+Simon Kinsinger (Mountain Reigns) It is described as the new "Old Order Amish Church" near Oakland Maryland. Nowher was it described as being Mennonite -- I am aware of the difference. Old Order Amish have services in their homes. I too am surprised by this, as Old Order Amish do not have churches, and would certainly never have allowed a camera at any services of any kind -- very puzzling. I also don't think Old Order Amish sing these kinds of hymns at their services.
+Pam Hannam I question your statement why are you so sure Old order Amish do not have churches? My father grew up Old Order Amish in Somerset County Pa.they met in a church building. my mother on the other hand grew up Old Order Amish in Belleville,Pa. they had services in their houses and barns. I grew up amish till I was eight years old in Stuarts Draft,Va. So by what authority, are you speaking from? Is it from a book you read your own experiences or something you heard someone else say?
Simon, sir ... I have a question. Are you aware that many Amish are leaving the communities because they believe they only need to place their faith in Christ and need only the scriptures to guide their lives by? They believe the elders that control things are unnecessary because Jesus guides people's lives with the His Word and the Holy Spirit. If they have a Pastor and church to worship in, why would they be shunned for leaving? How say you about this?
I don't claim any authority on these matters. I am fortunate to know a number of Amish families, some of whom have shared Amish history with me. I am aware that of the Old Order Amish who had broken with those in Lancaster County, many ultimately became part of an Old Order in Somerset County which broke off further between the traditional old Amish and the Beachy Amish. I didn't think of Beachy as Old Order -- a progressive old order, I guess -- but perhaps they are considered old order.. One of the distinguishing features of the Beachy Amish in Somerset County was holding church services in a church building rather than in homes. I see that you come from the Somerset County so I'm assuming you may have grown up in the progressive Beachy Amish culture. Of course, now there are Beachy Amish worldwide, with congregations that meet in church buildings. Additionally, I know that some Old Order groups started meeting in church buildings as early as the 19th century, but some members of those groups separated and reverted back to meeting in homes. To my knowledge, none of them, however, would have looked kindly upon being photographed. However, I learned most of my history from my Amish friends, all of whom are Lancaster County Old Order. Later, I read books on the same subject -- but I don't claim authoritative or comprehensive knowledge on any of these subjects. I just had not personally known any Old Order Amish who worshipped in church buildings.
Do the Amish in Canada have their own burial grounds/cemeteries or are they buried in same cemeteries as non amish folks. I always assumed they just had family plots on their own land. I heard a story about an amish family buying a farm here and there was an old non amish family cemetery on the land. The amish people removed the head stones, used them for steps and used the land as grazing pasture.
At first my condolence to you. I know it is not so easy to be at a funeral. At secound I wonder me your amish family be traditional amish but use english sign (exit over the church door), singing in english, and I see electrical bulbs. I thinks it is hard for everybody want live same 1650 but be in this time right? But another question I have - they use horse power wagon for fire and ambulance service or ask at help the neighborhood comunity with modern truck and cars?
Things are changing. For the longest time I wanted to know about this secret group; what they believe, and I do admire living off the land, and work does keep people from getting into trouble. I sometimes go to Amish stores and the older ones are very friendly but the teenagers hardly want to talk at all.
Is this real? I have done business with them and I live very close to them. I know they don't like being photographed especially during such a serious personal time. Hmmmm just doesn't seem right... I could be wrong probably am...
Parts of this were unintelligible- especially the preacher. Was part of it in German? It is rather pathetic that I know no German- my Dad spoke no English until he went to primary school. His side of the family are Mennonites (Dad was the first to marry an Inglysch)- My maiden name is Klaassen. Many of the faces there at the funeral are so familiar! They could as well be my cousins!
Simon, does everyone have to stand there until all the dirt is filled? Do kids get fussy when they have to be still and quiet? Why are a couple of girls not dressed in Amish clothes?
I agree, it is hard enough to grieve the loss of a life, but it is taken care of so quickly, its very final. But really, there is no "chance" for the person who passed away. They are asleep in death.
hey quick questions for you. why are the people walking around the church during the signing of hymns? they sing hymns accapella? is that how they sing during sunday services too? just some questions for you. not trying to be mean or disrespectful at all.
Simon you didn't have to be an ass about it. all it said in the discription was it was filmed at a funeral nothing about the singing or how the service normally are for the amish. guess i'll have to look it up on google since you were that much of a help.
Andy C Im not being an ASS about it! There is nothing to say ITS A FUNERAL this is NOT A SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE what part cant you understand???? The movie is scripted as it plays did you even watch it?
Andy C I don't understand why its such a HUGE deal to you? Are you planning to join the Amish if so then do so it might be a good experience for you! I was Amish until I was eight years old and I really don't care to go back!
I heard there are some black Amish, but they're mostly adopted into households. For Mennonites, however, some families have mixed children (black and white).
+Rebecca Meister I can only talk from my own experience but as an Amish Youth growing up for Sunday evening Hymn Sings we would sing from the German songbooks for the first half and then switch to the English Hymn Books for the last half, Church & Sunday School Hymnal, Church Hymnal, Christian Hymnal, and the Christian Hymnary which was used a lot more in later years because it had over 1000 hymns to select from and covered both German and English songs and hymns.
Is there a significance to singing the same songs from one language to another? Why not just English, or just German? Wouldn't it be most important the songs are sung from the heart, rather than being concerned with language? Or am i missing something?
Having lived near Amish growing up, those that I have encountered did not generally speak English until they were older. All the children I met all spoke the low German. Does it change from community to community?
Many of these relatives in the video are mine. They are a more progressive church in Oakland. From what I would understand is that singing in German is to still hold on to traditions that have been passed down for centuries.
Anthony Parsons You mean Levi the Amish Bully? That movie series so distorts who the Amish really are and NO WAY represents the Amish I grew up out of!
They don't want photos of their faces,. although some tolerate English people taking photos of their faces,. since that photo would not be the property of the Amish person. When the English possess the photo, then the English is violating the commandment prohibition of graven images.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this funeral via video. I am a minister of a small non-denominational church here in the cornfields of Illinois. I appreciate the message - one like I would give - and the message in the congregational singing! God bless you and your family!

Why was this "not a normal Amish service". Is there different types of funerals among the Amish? I too am sorry for your loss.
God Bless you. I pray you won't get too much grief. Why is there a march of people walking around in Church, if I may ask?
Thank you for sharing your funeral rite. I appreciate being able to view how other cultures and societies interpret and manage death.
you will get no grief form me. and respect to your family at this sad time

Question: Is this the choir holding the music sheets?
So surreal how similar and straight-foward the Amish funeral rites are to Islamic rites, especially when it comes to burial.
Yes I agree, in 2012 when I visited the Pennsylvania Amish, They refused to let picture to be taken, Claiming it stoled their soul.
Things are changing. For the longest time I wanted to know about this secret group; what they believe, and I do admire living off the land, and work does keep people from getting into trouble. I sometimes go to Amish stores and the older ones are very friendly but the teenagers hardly want to talk at all.
I'm black! And although the amish don't like people of color, I respect and love the strength of amish people.
Electric lights?
Beautiful people
My condolences.
+Laura Minnick Welcome to the club that describes me so amish I could not speak English! Now I'm so English its difficult to speak Pa Dutch
Simon, does everyone have to stand there until all the dirt is filled? Do kids get fussy when they have to be still and quiet? Why are a couple of girls not dressed in Amish clothes?
What is the song right after the Preacher's Speech?
+Ted Jackson Its a song found in the Christian Hymnal and Church Hymnal called "City Of light"
Mr. Kinsinger, thank you for your help. Although, I was looking for the song that started at 9:05.
I agree, it is hard enough to grieve the loss of a life, but it is taken care of so quickly, its very final. But really, there is no "chance" for the person who passed away. They are asleep in death.
How did you get by with filming them? Are they ok now with that?
It is her own family. Read the description.
Intriging footage. My condolances.
Very beautiful and touching!
why are they putting planks in the grave?
I wondered the same thing.
Who’s the guy two benches up?
hey quick questions for you. why are the people walking around the church during the signing of hymns? they sing hymns accapella? is that how they sing during sunday services too? just some questions for you. not trying to be mean or disrespectful at all.
Andy C Did you read the video credits and why it was made?
Andy C I get so FED UP with ignorant TH-camrs like that guy I just deleted!
I am I interested Amish community... love learning about them... I thought that Amish do not have funerals.... just wondering.... have a good day
Funereals of Amish are usually at home ,same as their church services ,weddings or even the birth of a baby.
I saw some English children are you related?
Loriwood Show Yes that was my late Amish Aunts funeral.
How do you become Amish? Why aren't there any black Amish?
I heard there are some black Amish, but they're mostly adopted into households. For Mennonites, however, some families have mixed children (black and white).
Oh no, I know that... That was being said VERY tongue in cheek. =)
Just curious, why are they standing up a lot and walking around the church?
Viewing the body.
Charles M thanks :-)
wHAT SONGS DO aMISH YOUTH SING WHEN THEY GATHER FOR HYMN SINGS?
From what I would understand is that singing in German is to still hold on to traditions that have been passed down for centuries.
also did you get Levi's permission to record this and put it on youtube??? lol
Anthony Parsons You mean Levi the Amish Bully? That movie series so distorts who the Amish really are and NO WAY represents the Amish I grew up out of!
Simon Kinsinger I know that show is bull. I grew up near the Amish In Ohio I was just making a joke of,that stupid show
+Simon Kinsinger (Mountain Reigns) just curious do you know Levi or ever see him?
What's the significance of 6:25
I thought the same if it's regarding the planks of wood.
What’s with the the Dixie cup hats .
yea and electric whats up with that?
Anthony Parsons Its called building code!
+Simon Kinsinger (Mountain Reigns) Building code has nothing to do with it. No codes require electric.
+junk But they do require lighted safety exits
Not in unlighted buildings.
I don't get your point
nice.
true Christians !
I thought the Amish cult had forbidden any form of photography??
They don't want photos of their faces,. although some tolerate English people taking photos of their faces,. since that photo would not be the property of the Amish person. When the English possess the photo, then the English is violating the commandment prohibition of graven images.
It is not a cult,it is a conservative Protestant Christian denomination that believes in the Anabaptist precepts.
Although I'm Iraqi, I love Amish people and I'd like to get married from Amish woman
😅
At a Jewish funeral the meh throw the dirt in and share the experience .
the
Funeral on youtube? Totally in bad taste.
Yep you are right that's why I will delete you and your comment!
