man i took my ram out to the woods, not sweat. was a beast in the woods. no issues what so ever. snow is coming soon will give update once it gets here.
Just because they're not running it through a 3 foot deep mud hole doesn't mean it's not off roading. This is just a basic test of what a stock truck with stock tires can do off road.
In the UK we have roads called 'green lanes', these are often more off road than this trail, yet are still part of the highways network in the UK. This is NOT an off road test!
But it doesn't show what a stock truck on stock tyres can do, because there is nothing remotely challenging. A 2wd car on normal road tyres could just have easily coped with that terrain.
Same no complaints. Do a ton of towing all year long and still running perfectly. Have even taken my 2,200 lb trailer loaded with trash, through wet muddy terrain. 👌🏾
This video reminded me how much I appreciate the deep well of car insights you guys provide in your videos!! Thanks for the daily dose of car-oriented fun.
Thanks for the kind words about our videos and for the heads up. We'd love to review the Longhorn with the 8-speed and leather everything and/or the Laramie. If we can get our hands on one we promise to get it plenty dirty.
Another point to mention about the Ram, is that they can fit 33inch mud tires straight from the factory. For a chevy to fit them it has to have a 2inch leveling kit and some plastic trimming just to make them not rub. Also, when lifted they can run 37's where as chevy can barely stuff 35's
Qwerty I had a 2012 z71. I think I would know. I had 33's and even with a 2 inch level they rubbed on bumps when I turned. I had to trim the valence for them to keep from rubbing.
Qwerty I had a 2012 z71. I think I would know. I had 33's and even with a 2 inch level they rubbed on bumps when I turned. I had to trim the valence for them to keep from rubbing.
A ram comes with a 275/65R20 from factory which is a 34.1" tall tire so fitting a 33x12.50R20 Is a piece of cake. But I went on and leveled it cause my hammerhead bumper replacement weighed down the front end a lot so I went with 3" leveling blocks and I have no rub or scrub
Hey guys, get a RAM Outdoorsman with 17" rims (preferably with real A/T tires, not Goodyears) and aim that thing off road. The only problem is deciding when you've had enough fun and turn to go home.
The Fast Lane Truck, I have a 2015 Ram 1500 SLT with the 5.7 Hemi..... Please feel free to take it for a REAL off road spin like I have. Just needed to replace the stock crap tires with KO2's.... Its fantastic in deep mud and snow, hill climbing, you name it. Please give the SLT 4x4 a chance and take it up Gold Mine Hill!!!
Nice review, I just bought this same truck only in sport model. No this review is not rock crawling but its more then most people will do with a stock 4x4 truck. And honestly if you want to do more hard core, I would get a Jeep.
I should make a remake of this. Something more off-road. Instead of little puddles and not even that much snow. In the winter where i live, it snows non-stop. Where you got to make your own tracks on the actual road. Sometimes theres about a foot of snow where i live on the road.
Being a 13 year old i notice alot of things and i was watching this and i noticed that when you were going up a hill you let out air to get better traction witch is good, but dont let too much because if you go to fast and your tire doesnt have enough air you could pop your tire (very unlikley) or damage your rims. so be careful letting out air of your tires.
If you can get your truck up our route (you can't) then I would agree with you. We had to pull in the mirrors of the Ram and, even then, we were brushing both sides of the path. Remember: we're not permitted to destroy the vehicles we review.
A Jeep guy I know swears that coils are (usually) more durable, easier to modify and last much longer than leafs. From what I've seen, leaf springs may be on their way out of 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks. Only time will tell. Thanks for watching!
They weren't necessarily complaining. They stated the fact that it is a large vehicle... which it is. They mentioned they had to fold the mirrors on some of the more narrow passes. What's wrong with mentioning that fact? Overall it was a very positive review of the RAM.
I believe that it locks the central differential so it would be useful when off roading. then you have full time 4x4, not only when the car realizes that wheels are spinning. It will just be even more effective.
i bought mine like 2 months ago... i'm loving it... make sure u get the 8 speed.. it will take the 6 speed by 2 truck lengths off the line and the 6 speed didn't catch up...
Thats the one thing i do like on my ML320. AWD body on frame (W163) but i do have low range option. It was cool when i had a massive berm of snow to get through.
We were on a family hiking trip with my dad driving his 2011 ram 1500 2wd up a trail very similar to this one nothing difficult but at the very top we found a Prius parked at the trailhead. My point is that a Prius would most defininently make it up this trail may scrape but wouldn't get stuck and would still make it.
Somehow your videos make me smile each time I watch them :D, that's really nice. By the way - some of the RAMs (every Laramie for example) have the Auto 4x4 mode which pretty much is an AWD system.
usually a 4x4 that has a low-range doesn't have a center differential, just a solid transfer case. the "auto" program engages the front drive shafts by linking them to the front differential. at least that's how my Avalanche works (uses a fork to engage a gear-set inside the front diff - which is in addition to engaging the front prop shaft in the central transfer case)
Glad you pointed out that most of the trails were able to be done in 2wd, I go on alot worse with my camping unit (4x4 quad in tow) and no issues!! lol
We'd love to test the new 8-speed but currently we only this truck in the Denver Press Fleet so at the moment we don't have access to the new transmission.
Not always, just look at the Jeep Grand Cherokees, the Toyota Land Cruisers, the Land Rover Discoverys. They all use computers to assist there off road capabilities, and have been doing so for over a decade. Traction control can react the wheel slipping fastest and more effectively then most limited slips. The thing is though they have traction control systems that are designed for off roading and nowadays can adapt to different sufface conditions as well as a proper 4wds due to center locks.
ive taken my ram into some way serious mud and actually got stuck due to traction control being on and in 2wd the mud was up to my axles and i was dead stuck. popped it into 4high t/c off and gunned it. took some while to get out but for having 3.55 gears and open diff its fuckin amazing still and having all terain tires made a huge difference than having summer street tires
You guys crack me up, I love your videos! I especially love these off-roading and snow videos with the trucks and Jeeps you've been posting lately. Keep them up when you can! I'm a big fan of the new Rams, I myself would get the Longhorn trim, it's practically the ultimate cowboy truck. Lol.
Hey guys really enjoyed this review....also really did like the music that you included....looking forward to the new Toyota Tacoma review (whenever that thing comes out)....
The Raptor also has locking front and rear diffs okay front diff the rear is electronic but it is also good at rock crawling as well as dessert running. Awesome pickup.
Great video as usual i have a 2012 ram express but its a reg cab and i love it. But i hope when the diesel 1500 get release you will be able to get your hands to test drive it. Keep up the good work.
I live on the South Coast UK (Portsmouth) and we are starting to get bad winters. The UK is so small though its difficult to find off roading areas to test my skills and the Ram. I liked this clip but would love to see the Ram on The White Rim Trail Utah (Canyon Land Moab) we did it in a rental Cherekee in the summer.
I have a 2019 Cherokee TrailHawk elite awd 4x4 and a 2021 ram 1500 classic 5.7 4x4 with the 3.92 gears and the only thing the Jeep Cherokee awd does better is turn in a tighter radius lol great video
Going off the discussion in the video, it would be great to see a MASHUP of AWD vs 4x4 to see first hand what the (dis)advantages of both and where the limits are. What do you think?
I see you referenced the Range Rover, which together with its utilitarian cousin the Land Rover Defender is a world beater off road. Here in the Alps, with winter tyres fitted, mine is literally unstoppable on steep snowy tracks, and the Hill Descent Control is something else. It takes some nerve the first time descending a steep slippery hill when you take your feet off all the pedals, but you can sense the car feeling its way down, with the drive, braking and ABS all working constantly to deliver what each wheel needs at any moment in time. By the way, do those older simpler 4WD set ups all have a manually operated Diff Lock as well? I also have a Toyota Land Cruiser which has AWD but in a simpler form, and it has hi-lo box and diff lock. You’re right about one thing, that technology on the RR is only good when it actually works!
Yeah I bet . A guy on vacation with his family here in Colorado basically said the same thing when he saw me come off a trail with my Tahoe. Not a Jeep trail or anything but not a trail for a Sienna. About 20 mins later he comes walking up... later we find out his oil pan got ripped right off the engine. Lovely tow fee as well to get his van off the trail.
This is a Sport. No recovery points, no skid plating, no lockers, 20" rims and low profile street tires. It's basically a 395hp shopping cart. This trail is about what it's intended for; rutted out dirt roads to the cabin, camp site, or the job site, not much more. It's not a purpose built off road truck.
in my opinion, thats nothing a little leveling kit couldnt fix. i dont like the way the front end sits lower, but thats designed like that for towing and hauling. also, there is a little black plastic guard under the bumper, which you can take off aswell.
Subaru's AWD works differently than the GMC's AWD system. Subaru's system is more like other peoples "Full Time 4WD," in that power is always being sent to the front and the rear. The only reaction it has to make is to shift more or less to the front or rear.
I can understand the mild trail for a brand new truck that isnt yours, BUT i cannot agree with your comment about ground clearance. That front bumper would be gone even on a tall curb. While you sit high in the truck, it also hangs very low.
I find it funny this is how people review vehicles, when they should find 5 owners with 2008 Ram 1500's and ask them what went wrong and how much repairs were, what went first, what parts of truck they love.
Pretty good video. On the 4x4 though, you could of went in more detail. AWD is for the street, rainy street, icy streets, ect. Not for offroading. But 4x4 is for offroading, rock crawling, mudding, ect. That's why when y'all take the AWD vehicles offroad they have problems, they are not meant to do that. 4x4 are made to do that, it's not old technology, it's what works for offroading so they don't need to change it with stupid computers. Too many computers just mess things up.
Not sure why people are talking about Raptor and Ramrunner here, but the Ramrunner is significantly more expensive than a Raptor and not a good daily driver and the Raptor is far more than a desert runner, if you pay any attention to off-road comparison tests--it has tested second only to the Wrangler for all terrain off-roading, and that, only due to its large size. But rock crawling, snow, mud and mountain trails, the Raptor has proven itself more than capable in numerous third party tests. Just look around TH-cam, don't take my word for it. And it has definitely placed AHEAD of the PowerWagon in offroading over uneven terrain like in this video above, and worse.
Theres rumors out that chrysler has a new twin turbo pentastar coming for the rams to compete with Fixed Or Repaired Daily's ecoboost. Its already in a new maserati and it puts out 404bhp. Mated to the new 8 speed dodge has, It'l give that ecoboost a good run for its money.
How do you think this would do with the Pentastar V6 with 4WD? I know you didn't have access to it, but Roman went to the press release. I know the HEMI has as Nathan would say CAHONES. Will the 3.6L Pentastar V6 Ram 1500 be as effective? It's been a winner Pentastar that's with the other Chrysler vehicles, especially with the 200 and 300. I know you'll find out in a future review...
You call that offroad ? IN NOVA SCOTIA our streets look like that...my driveway has bigger ruts and holes....put some off road tires on that thing and turn the wheel off that road..let's see what that ram is made of..had enough of these whimpy reviews..
great video quality guys i was wondering what camera was on the side of the truck at 8:24 to 8:30 the blue one was it a contour camera? and would u guys recommend it? i am trying to buy one and see it its good need one that can be used outdoors like yuo guys. be great if you had an episode of all the cameras you guys use.
Question: Toyota 4Runner Trail version vs Jeep Grand Cherokee Trail Rated for light to moderate off-roading. Which one would you recommend? I'm leaning toward the Jeep GC Limited with the diesel 4x4.
Raptor is good only for race in streight lines ... and I would take the Ramrunner package before the raptor for the price and the offroad quality ... The powerwagon is a really good offroad truck ... the Raptor is like a race truck .. not made for the same things than the powerwagon ... better to take a Powerwagon for this kind of offroading than the Raptor
Have you been able to test the new 2013 RAM1500 with the adjustable air ride suspension that will raise and lower the vehicle? Did you do any damage to the front lower plastic air dam on the truck as that seems to be the low point for an approach angle on these trucks. Lots of ground clearance otherwise!
I'm going to guess this isn't with the 8 speed and air suspension options. I'm curious, do you guys know when a ram will be tested with those? Love to see an outdoorsman model or laredo shown with those new tech's they added for this year.
Hey I have a quest. - btw great video as always, but which do you think maintains its stiffness over the longer miles.....coil springs or leaf springs? I think coils because leafs tend to sag but what do you think?
+Elaine Carol Wright I absolutely LOVE the 3.6 V-6 GAS! I am getting 21mpg without trying in a 4x full sized crew cab! The most I EVER got in my 09 Tacoma with a 4 cyl. is 18 and lame power- The 3.6 has plenty of power for all driving
man i took my ram out to the woods, not sweat. was a beast in the woods. no issues what so ever. snow is coming soon will give update once it gets here.
It's been 5 years still waiting

300bhpton i agree.. this seems like a simple lake road too me

I’d like to see these trucks actually get tested, this channel isn’t very good at doing that though.
I have a 2014 1500 sport and live in Alaska... it handles really well on ice and snow no problems at all .
Same no complaints. Do a ton of towing all year long and still running perfectly. Have even taken my 2,200 lb trailer loaded with trash, through wet muddy terrain. 👌🏾

One of the better reviews with them both in it.
You guys are defiantly my favorite car reviewers on TH-cam. Keep up the good work!!

Kirk Bowden I just bought one. Love it
I have a 2016 Ram 1500, and If you buy any Ram, replace the factory Goodyears. With 10K miles they already were terrible in the rain and snow!
Bfg ko2
The Fast Lane Truck, I have a 2015 Ram 1500 SLT with the 5.7 Hemi..... Please feel free to take it for a REAL off road spin like I have. Just needed to replace the stock crap tires with KO2's.... Contour, we love them.
We'd love to test the new 8-speed but currently we only this truck in the Denver Press Fleet so at the moment we don't have access to the new transmission.
its not just about having all the torque its about a balance between power, efficiency, reliability, and cost which GM has in their trucks

I have this exact truck with air ride. I like the extra clearance but the ride is quite firm on the highest setting.

Getting the single cab 4x4 and it's going to be awesome
You guys have the best job ever! I hope you're grateful for that :)
Off-road? Seriously? I could drive my wifes Grand Caravan down that trail easily. Pathetic excuse for off road testing.
Yeah I bet . A guy on vacation with his family here in Colorado basically said the same thing when he saw me come off a trail with my Tahoe. Not a Jeep trail or anything but not a trail for a Sienna. I was thinking the same thing.
This off-road for Honda Accord only😉😎
It's not the sport. It's the Express. Tradesman with cloth seats and carpet, 20 inch wheels and dual exhaust. Just bought the same color 2018.
Awd: can get u home on snowy roads
4wd: can make its own damn road wherever it pleases.
Off road - it's a massive vehicle.
More trucks guys! I love watching y'alls reviews.
Bring out the Tundra soon, eh? :)
And most important, THANKS for testing and sharing your videos! This one was awesome as always! :o)
That LandCruiser made me happy haha
The LED's are equipped on different trims such as the R/T and Sport.
in my opinion, thats nothing a little leveling kit couldnt fix. i dont like the way the front end sits lower, but thats designed like that for towing and hauling. also, there is a little black plastic guard under the bumper, which you can take off aswell.
Good Review, I'm actually looking at getting one of these, the higher end models have an auto setting on the 4x4 system which kind of acts like awd.
i love my new 2013 ram 1500 Big Horn

three words why you should get the 6 speed "center console shifter"
i could see this making a good farm truck with the extended bed, and shorter box, with the Cummins Diesel 2500 or 3500 model frame
great video. love the music intro for the truck.
Like that HEMI!!!!!
I can understand the mild trail for a brand new truck that isnt yours, BUT i cannot agree with your comment about ground clearance. That front bumper would be gone even on a tall curb. While you sit high in the truck, it also hangs very low.

another great vid! Ram rules!
a v6 with a turbo can make more torque and whp than a v8 can ever dream of and while saving gas
Wow! I test drove the 6 speed and I thought that was fast!
You should test it off road with the new air suspension
i love your reviews!
Pretty good video. On the 4x4 though, you could of went in more detail. AWD is for the street, rainy street, icy streets, ect. Not for offroading. Love the Chevrolet commercial before the Dodge review. :r
I am considering buying this truck. Took it for a test drive today. Does anyone own this truck? Any customer reviews?

when you can buy a $45,000 plus pickup and are able to beat it at will and pay for damages you can do this :-)
Take her out to NB and we'll take er out for a rip buds lmao
Typical "You call that offroad?" comment. Knew that would be somewhere, they're in every off road video. Shut up
christ...if only you made sense !!!
here in Cape breton we have moon craters everywhere
great video quality guys i was wondering what camera was on the side of the truck at 8:24 to 8:30 the blue one was it a contour camera? and would u guys recommend it? i am trying to buy one and see it its good need one that can be used outdoors like yuo guys. be great if you had an episode of all the cameras you guys use.
Love that truck!!
HA! That's the best post this week. Besides, Roman's too uptight for that.
That's an excellent idea.
I hate that they are complaining about how big it is. Its a truck for gods sake
The Fiat Ram 1500. Hands down.
I love my 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 4wd
Hey I have a quest. - btw great video as always, but which do you think maintains its stiffness over the longer miles.....coil springs or leaf springs? I think coils because leafs tend to sag but what do you think?
I wouldn't mention Subaru as a typical example of an automatic 4X4 system.
How would the 3.6L Penastar do in this terrain?
+Elaine Carol Wright I absolutely LOVE the 3.6 V-6 GAS! I am getting 21mpg without trying in a 4x full sized crew cab! The most I EVER got in my 09 Tacoma with a 4 cyl. is 18 and lame power- The 3.6 has plenty of power for all driving
395 hp , damn that'll shit-n-git
you need that to put the 8 speed and air ride suspension
i hate ford but i respect them for selling full size pick ups with turbos i was starting to wonder if it ever was gonna happen
Thanks for your efforts , Can you make a review for the Nissan Pathfinder 2010 se 1 ?
You guys should get a hold of a power wagon :)
That's a good size off road truck
