You don’t have to avoid using retinoids while breastfeeding.
It’s something I see popping up a lot among my fellow moms, so I thought I’d share some insights. While there’s not direct data on retinoid use during breastfeeding, it’s worth noting that tretinoin, a type of retinoid, isn’t heavily absorbed when applied topically, especially on small areas like your face. So, the risk to your baby from any tiny amount that might make it into your breast milk is super low. I haven’t come across any evidence showing harm to infants from using topical tretinoin.

Also, I firmly believe that being a mom doesn’t mean sacrificing everything, including your skincare routine. Retinoids have been my go-to for keeping my skin in check, and I’ve already gone without them for months while trying to conceive and during pregnancy. It’s frustrating that guidance around pregnancy and breastfeeding often gets lumped together when the risks are really quite different. Ultimately, the decision to use retinoids while breastfeeding is yours to make, but it’s always a good idea to chat with your doctor about it.
