I love my little Koi set. It is just right for me. I'm a card maker and crafter. I don't plan on painting masterpieces, so I don't need expensive sets. But I wanted better quality than the chalky little sets they sell at Michael's.
The only thing I hate about the chalky set is there aren’t very pigmented. I always have to apply so much and then... I run out quickly. But! They work for being a card maker/crafter :D
+Christine Lee Sakura Koi is a Japanese brand but I think this field set is "made in China". The ones in tubes are the ones which are made in Japan, though there's no significant difference between the colors... I think.
I got mine at Hobby Lobby witha 40% off coupon and have not useed it much. I really like the one you did the review on the mission colors. They are awesome.
Amy, I have to say, again, how much I enjoy your TH-cams. I watch them to learn and for ideas, not to pick them apart or dispute what you tell us. I find it disconcerting that people use the comment area to be condescending and/or mean. You provide a range of products and are very honest about the quality and your opinion of the product. When you create a card that is not one of my favorites, I don't feel compelled to leave a condescending comment. Again, I love your youtubes and thankful that discovering your site is what started me making cards.
Thanks for sharing this watercolor set Amy. I really like the size, it seems a good match for me. Your objectivity and honesty really helps me with my purchases. Student quality is fine for me as I'm not a fine artist, but my daughter is, so knowing what might be good for her vs. what is good for me is really helpful to me! You're the best! And thanks for help with the brushes too! :)
I was going to make a comment about it not being Chinese, but I see someone already has ^-^ I didn't see any annotation, but that's probably because I'm watching on mobile. But anyways, thanks Amy for this video! It has definitely helped me make up my mind about getting this set! :)
Thank you so much Amy for sharing this review. I love seeing your reviews on products. It really helps me choose products that would be right for me in my stash.
milphene Hi! I'm not Prairie but I just recently bought a set of watercolors from Mijello :) its a korean brand. I bought the 36 colors 7ml tube set. They are amazing and very vivid! Definitely artist grade paints. The Mijello brand also sells student grade paints called "Mijello Silver Class" while the more professional ones would be "Mijello Mission Gold". They have pans sets as well as tube sets. You can search them online. They're much cheaper on Amazon or some other online shops :) I've tested several brands including Van Gogh, Koi watercolors (which both of them are student grade) and Winsor & Newton artist grade paints (professional) and for the price and quality, I like working with Mijello the most :) you should try them out!
+Elizabeth Gunn yes I've seen them online - I buy all this stuff myself so I can't get it all at once LOL! I do want to try them out sometime (and will post a video if and when I do :))
I have this watercolor set too, I'm a little disappointed about the case tho'...It doesn't close securely and its's very loose (it opens very fast) so I always keep it inside the box.
these are in the same range as the cotmans from winsor and newton and if you live in the us you will probably get this set cheaper than a winsor and newton as they are eu based. if you start you should check out @PennyBlack, Jill Foster is mixing like crazy with these colors lol, as to lightfast: I wouldn't know I am sorry :) I know winsor and newton didnt fade on me yet so I guess these will do fine specially for simple cards and tags :)
I will order me the koi and do a comparison with cotman and koi and post you the link for reference, that way you know in the us wich one is best for you.
I really want this for my birthday but when i go online i see they are like 20-35 dollars with free shipping and im like oh yay. But when i convert the prices its becomes $40+ and im like oh hell nah
Thank you for sharing your honesty with the products that you purchase. It is truly helpful when deciding for myself. I was just curious if you have ever considered any of the Dr. Ph Martins? Thank you again, I truly love your videos.
+Holly H. I don't plan on trying them - not right now anyway - maybe down the road I might. My personal downfall with them is their liquid consistency - I'm horribly clumsy and I just see disaster with me and those. They're gorgeous water colors though...... ;)
+Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) Thank you so much for responding and your honest thoughts! I get the whole clumsy thing. Cards usually end up being double takes as I always smear, smudge, or spill. Thanks again.
Just got my set with a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby. When I first used the brown on the bottom right (not very sure of the name atm) I found that it came out freckled on my paper. Does anyone else have this one problem? Am I doing something wrong here?
+Ananda Dita I thought so too but all the other colors worked fine. I did use my palette more and found out that the darker colors are cracked in pan. My brush bristols fall loose as a whole too. Manufacturing defect or Hobby Lobby gave me a super old set
Because these are cheaper watercolors you aren't getting purer high quality pigments - the "freckling" you're seeing is the fillers and whatnot - which varies from color to color - to get truly smooth watercolor you need to get higher quality (i.e. More expensive) watercolors
The price point of a product doesn't determine whether its student quality or a more professional quality. Although you may not have meant it, it sounded like you insinuated that.
I love my Koi water colours. I have the pans and the tubes. I use them more than the Windsor Newton.

The colors are great - I wouldn't have considered purchasing this before seeing your video. Thank you!
Sakura Koi is a Japanese brand
+Christine Lee Sakura Koi is a Japanese brand but I think this field set is "made in China". The ones in tubes are the ones which are made in Japan, though there's no significant difference between the colors... I think.
But it’s as good as things made in Japan
The only thing is China paint has lead
I think the actual box is made in china, not the paint
I got mine at Hobby Lobby witha 40% off coupon and have not useed it much. I really like the one you did the review on the mission colors. They are awesome.
Amy, you do the absolute best product reviews. You cover everything and I appreciate what a good job you do!
Sakura Koi is from Japan, as the word "Sakura" means cherry blossom in Japanese.
I have a travel set of 12 colors and I'm loving using it every time I can.🤗🖒
I love this little kit! You are right when recommending for card makers!
Love my set. I think I have had it over a year. Not wild about the water brush, but it does work.

You keep on sighing on the mic... it's giving me the chills.
since some of the darker colors look a lot like black on camera I was like "what, who needs that many blacks???"
Omg!! I just got that little koi set today... im loving it!
This is actually from japan.
obviously you didn't read/see the annotation :)
Jeszica Moragas there's an American version and a Japan version
I was going to make a comment about it not being Chinese, but I see someone already has ^-^ I didn't see any annotation, but that's probably because I'm watching on mobile. But anyways, thanks Amy for this video! It has definitely helped me make up my mind about getting this set! :)
I just purchased this set! I haven't yet used it, but it is nice to be affirmed! Annette

+Kayla Renee (A Scrappy Mess) I'm glad! :)
Great review, I have this set, I take it on vacation, TFS.
what korean watercolors do you have that you recommend? I'm trying to collect watercolors from different countries too!

thank you for the review... this video helped a lot and I just ordred my set!
just that this product is Japanese□
Prima Marketing has watercolors now! Would love for you to review them!
+Elizabeth Gunn yes I've seen them online - I buy all this stuff myself so I can't get it all at once LOL! I do want to try them out sometime (and will post a video if and when I do :))
nice bright colors
im dying to buy this. its really expensive in my currency i tell u,
Yes its expensive too in my country currency
Where do you live? In my country Koi is much cheaper than Cotman, Van gogh, etc
Ye, it’s $40 but it is worth it :D
Would have liked to see you try out the brush.
I live in Indonesia and those watercolor set aren't cheap here, i feel like you could get a watercolor set tgat is cheaper and work the same
it also has a thumb ring on the bottom so you can hold it on your hand if you can't set it down anywhere. I got my set at joanns when they had 50% off
Yes I showed that in the video
+Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) yep you did a nice review. I love that thumb ring lol.
If you want to try the best of the best watercolor Schmincke is heavenly!!!
+Marjolein Dekker It's on my someday/maybe/hopefully wish list and has been for some time LOL!
I see a SSS order in my future!!
I just upgraded from artist loft (they are extremely chalky) to these. I also got a bit of tubes to be experiment with.
Are the kois chalky? I hate chalky watercolors... please tell me
When you wana change to another color you rubb your brush on the yellow things on the sides
Thank you i had to know how they worked before buying them :D!
Are they chalky? Transparent or opaque?
Thanks for the review. Take care. sue
I love it Thanks
Thank you.
Are they chalky
I have this one, too, but I can't tell witch are warm or cool red, yellow, blue. Can you please tell me?
DoughnutBuranasaksin red, yellow and orange are warm colors while blue, violet and green are cool. I hope that helps.
iDooDliArt I meant i'm not sure whice one is warm red or cool red.
DoughnutBuranasaksin the crimson lake is the warm and the light red the cool. I hope that helps. Enjoy your art making.
thank you :)
I have this watercolor set too, I'm a little disappointed about the case tho'...It doesn't close securely and its's very loose (it opens very fast) so I always keep it inside the box.
You can try contacting the company to see if they'll do anything about it - my case is perfectly fine and closes securely
Doodle Fairy same with me.. The lid isn't that secure..
Is it the same as petit color?
more than likely yes
can i make more diffrent shades by mixing them up?
yes
Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) thnku 😙
What is the Russian palate that you mentioned in your video?
It's a White Nights palette :)
+Prairie Paper & Ink (AmyR) Thanks!!

What is the make of your water brush?

Have you tried Brusho?
+BreAnn Loveland no I haven't - hopefully one of these days I'll get my hands on some to try out :)
What kind of paper do you use?
everything is listed and linked in the description box below the video
why should we buy 24 and 36 colors when we can creat them from 12 colors? someone tell me plz
Dương Phong Lê They do it to save them the time to mix all those colors. Well, thats what i use them for lmao
lol 😂 thanks for ur answer
I really want this for my birthday but when i go online i see they are like 20-35 dollars with free shipping and im like oh yay. But when i convert the prices its becomes $40+ and im like oh hell nah
What kind of paper are you using? Would printer paper work? I'm out at the moment and it might take me a while to get paper for watercolor
watercolour paper - it's linked below the video. And no printer paper will not work
I got my set at AC Moore with my 50% off coupon!
Thank you for sharing your honesty with the products that you purchase. It is truly helpful when deciding for myself. I was just curious if you have ever considered any of the Dr. Ph Martins? Thank you again, I truly love your videos.

maybe u used wrong paper that doesn't absorb well

spøøky jim do you have it now?
The price point of a product doesn't determine whether its student quality or a more professional quality. Although you may not have meant it, it sounded like you insinuated that.
no but the price point is determined by the process to make them and what type of ingredients is in them. Semantics.
I don't wanna spend 20 dollars easily.
Does it chalk a lot? Does it dramatically fade overtime? How quality is the container? Is it worth it?
Coffee Jaytee You can get it for like 5 or 7 dollars in some places
Yeah but some cheaper ones are not really that great, this set is pretty good for beginners. There’s also a 12 pack set
@@sockjean2967 just bought a sakura koi 30 watercolor set for 12 dollars
the colors are nice but the darker colors are VERY chalky
you can get this on amazon for $20
and there's a link to it on Amazon in the description box below the video
I don't know, I didn't care for Koi watercolors. They seemed too chalky to me.
I got mine for 7
I bought this on amazon today for 18$
