    Here is a full review of my 1970s vintage Seiko automatic chronograph that I bought on eBay for only $150USD. The reference number for this specific watch is 6139-6012. There were a lot of questions and doubts about this watch when I bought it.
    I've been looking for a vintage automatic Seiko chrono for a long time. I think they offer amazing value for money. It's pretty much impossible to find a new automatic chronograph for under $600. With vintage Seikos there a lot of options. In this video I will give you some advice on 3 things you should do when buying a vintage Seiko Chrono.
    I'm happy with my watch although it does have some shortcomings. Enjoy the video!

    A fine review, Oleg! I wore this watch from 1971 until 82 but with a bright blue starburst dial. It came to me from my uncle in the Air Force via the PX, a JDM like this one. In anesthesia residency it was a true tool watch enabling the timing of ventilator cycling in the operating room when one could not simply set the ventilator rate but I had to time the cycle in seconds and divide into 60 to get breaths per minute. It took years of HARD knocks through high school, college, medical school with several broken bands until it failed while timing a ventilator cycle, the chronometer second hand spinning like a propeller. I kept it for years too unsophisticated to take it to a watchmaker but I finally left it behind for a Casio to time the vent. Maybe 5 years ago I picked up another, then another, finally a third on EBay! 1/3 works great and is a prize in my rotation. I much prefer the modest 39 mm size to the larger Pogue. It sits beautifully on my small 6.75” wrist. When I turn it to check the time it flashes in the sun and I can almost feel my other arm around my first girlfriend when I was 16.

    The dark mark on the minute hand is from resetting the chrono and the sweep swings back so fast, it flexes and if the minute hand is between the sweep and the 0 position the sweep hits the minute hand and chips the paint off. The dial is original. Also, I have a 1971 model with seiko 5 Speedtimer on it. That's how you know it's jdm, when it says Speedtimer, your 6139 here is a global version, not jdm. Still cool though. Also, 1 more thing, they ALL came with hardlex mineral. Acrylic crystal is aftermarket. I recommend you get a mineral replacement. Still an awesome watch.

    Great review Oleg , fortune favours the brave and it looks like you got yourself a good watch by taking the risk. Not sure I would be that confident without actually handling the watch , such as the ones you purchase from the flea market. So far I have bought all my watches new, but I can definitely see the attraction of bargain hunting the vintage market. There must be untold numbers of watches out there but I always think there will be loads more people who have more knowledge of watches than me getting in there first and snapping up the good ones. We have plenty of antique and curio shops here in Scotland and I think I may just be looking there for that next watch I cannot live without :-) Really enjoying your channel so keep up the good work.

      Thank you Tom! I love vintage watches and hunting for vintage pieces. I think there are some incredible watches and some incredible deals on watches in the used/vintage market. However, you do have to be careful because it's very easy to buy "headache" instead of a watch. My advice would be to start cheap (under $50) and try to test out the watch as much as possible before buying it. Good luck, and all the best, Oleg.

    keep in mind to keep the chrono always running.. and in case you use it and have to reset the Chrono don't do a "hard reset" beginning from between the 2 o'clock and the 10 o'clock position.. otherwise you can damage the hands and the movement.

    • @24hourstime
      @24hourstime  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry but I didn’t get you @GITMO. Can you please elaborate?

    • @gitmoholliday5764
      @gitmoholliday5764 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hashimsheriff703 the chrono of a 6139 is running without heavy pressure on the mechanism ( which is good ) the moment you stop the chrono it will build up pressure and that eventually can cause the mechanism to fail, and it is very difficult to find spare parts.
      ( a hard reset = if you stop the chrono when the secondhand is positioned between the 1 o'clock marker and the 11 o'clock marker ) that sudden reset could make the secondhand vibrate and damage the hour and minute hand.

    Sorry I was late to view this really good video. Once again my French Bulldog (Brie) says hello to Bond! I think she wants to meet him. She says he's cute. Anyway,looks like you got a really nice watch for the money. Anytime you can get one for under $200 that is functioning well then it is a deal. I have a lot of these 6139's as well as the 6138's. All very cool watches. The one thing about your watch I like is the chronograph seconds hand snaps back fast to zero. That is a great thing. Most are very sluggish returning to the zero. Good luck with your videos. I appreciate someone who takes us back in time to the 1970's!

    • @24hourstime
      @24hourstime  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you my friend and say hi to Brie! I'm really happy with the purchase. It was nerve-wrecking opening the box for the first time and testing the chrono. Luckily, my risk has paid off. Do you find any different in the movement (accuracy etc...) between 6139 and 6138?
      All the best, Oleg and Bond.

    If it runs and chrono works that's good enough most important thing is the dial and whether if it is original. If you are willing to shell out thousands for a speedmaster don't be cheap on these 6139s they are every bit as historic if not more - first automatic chronograph and first in space.

  • @wireguided9572
    @wireguided9572 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Oleg. It's a lovely looking watch, pity about the negatives. The day/date change is the same on the 6139 "Pogue" I found it a bit weird changing them on mine. I find that if you change the day first and then you can change the date without the day advancing any further. Great vid.

    Seiko collectors never cease to amaze me. Why do you persist in overrated, obsolete, and poorly made watches? I wore Seiko back in high school. I wonder if the quality control was as bad then? Reminds me of of British sports car enthusiasts. They were so forgiving of their cars imperfections, yet at what cost? Where are those companies today? Most have bankrupted. Those that are still around were bought out by other companies. These companies do things right and produce quality cars for their customers. Sadly, Seiko can produce quality time pieces. They just seem to prefer to sell nostalgia. Why would anyone buy such lackluster products. Then again, I have noticed that many Seiko customers also like Soviet era junk. All I can say is remember the words of PT Barnum.... LMAO!

    Hello, I have aserious note thought. Watches which com from Venezuela could have a very horrible history. The Police steal many watches from Venezuelans, could be from dead corpse, soldiers kill ppl ver vasg, or from people who are arrested, or whoever they want. Many who flee out of Venezuela have to leave their homes and the government of Venezuela confiscate the homes so they take everything and they might sell watches of the previous owners of the the housed. We have family in Venezuela, they know I collect watches and they told us about that situaton. I myself wouldn't buy if the seller is in/from Venezuela, those watches could have a lot of spilled blood and lost lifes on them.
    I hope this helps you a bit more.
    Kind regards,
    Walter

    So 150 dollars for a Frankein watch with disgusting paint spots all over the dial ( the date window omg) you call it an "amazing value"? Personally I call it a scam..Face it my friend the dude who sells you that crap robbed you...And how a "JDM model" have not a japanese date disk but a english/spanish one? Juste make no sense..exept maybe the guy who butchered this watch change it too...Anyway so I hope since the video came out you put this junk in the trash..
