I realized the proper golf downswing is practically identical to a SS or 3rd baseman turning a double play. I mentioned this to a golf pro not long ago and he said Hogan actually said this! That's fascinating to me.
@@zachwilliams4453 @zachwilliams4453 awesome man, it's crazy isn't it! And wow! Hi Eric, In this stance since we don't bend from hips and rather bend from upper body I think the shaft at stance will be more verticle (in my case at more than my usual 45 degree angle). During the downswing when hips bend the shaft will shallow. If I keep shaft 45 degrees at stance then I end up hitting very low shots especially my 3 wood.
Yes thats part of it.....as a general check I would look to get the butt of the club roughly pointing at the belt buckle from down the line in terms of height/angle of shaft at setup
Hi Eric, love this, I’ve often tried the butt back thing and always ended up messing it up. I think this tip of staying taller to start is what was missing. One thing I found that people might need to be aware of is that if you start taller you might need to address the ball on the toe. I had to do that or i shanked like crazy when I lowered on the downswing.
Hi Eric, thanks for the reply. Something I have been thinking about for a while in my game is to “feel” like my hands move at the same pace as my body turn, for all shots not just controlled wedge shots. What do you think about this?
Hey Steve! could be good. Too simplistic to say for sure YES or NO....would need to see what ACTUALLY happens when you FEEL that. If that simple FEEL produces perfect motion then I love it. If it doesn't then I hate it :)

Thanks! In terms of the FEELs here.....this would apply the same with all clubs. The length/lie angle of the club would naturally distance some minor setup changes but in terms of the FEELS here....would be the same concepts throughout.
My pro said that if you look at a lot of baseball players setting up in the batters box, they do this move where they push their hips forward while they're getting set. I always assumed it was something they did to stay loose. He pointed out they do it so they can push the hips back during the swing and get a more powerful rotation. Byron Nelson has been reported as saying, “You can’t stand too close to the ball.” Perhaps this has been a technical reason explaining that. Thank you. This was very interesting and probably will help me.

thanks. I've been working on this actually and find that standing taller and keeping the chest closer to the hips by just rounding the upper back felt more comfortable and kept me from hitting a lot of fat shots. Shots were more consistent and the divots were nice and shallow now. However, i realize sometimes by doing this my hands were to close to my body at address and i hit some shanks to the right?
You got it! I would need to see your swing to give you a 100% solution....need to see what's actually going on. Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and we can fix could be several things...should be easy to fix but need to see
Good point, Eric. Don't stand too far away (tried and failed, the ball comes out lower and more unpredictable). But I guess you have to make sure that the lie on the clubs fit your swing as well? My seven iron has 61.5 degrees of loft. Other game improvement sets 62.5 or even more. Which means you can stand a bit more upright with those.
Agreed---for sure good to always get lie angles checked.....there are other variables at play like length of arms, club length as well as lie angle. But yes....always safe to confirm lie angles!
as i deal with my lumbar stenosis in my swing, that right side crunch is very painful. i just can't do that anymore. results...thin thin thin. question...do you feel weight more on your toes at the top then to the heals going down?
Hey Randy! Want to work the pressure to trail heel and lead toes in backswing....then back to middle in transition....then toward lead heel and trail toes in follow through More on the pressure in feet throughout downswing details here: th-cam.com/video/S-sWOuNt_O8/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUWRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vICBmb290d29yaw%3D%3D th-cam.com/video/pdRisKYTAjc/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUnRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHdlaWdodCBpbiBmZWV0IHRlbGxpbmcgeW91 Those two should go through the details well!
Yep...I like armpits over balls of foot and hip center over ankle. Butt line about a fist/clubhead behind heel line. that would be optimal to allow rotation/prevent early extension. not everyone will do it nor need to but it would stack the odds in the players favor
In terms of the FEELS here.....yes, this would apply the same with all clubs. The length/lie angle of the club would naturally distance some minor setup changes but in terms of the FEELS here....would be the same concepts throughout.
Eric, what about weight distribution? Is the top-heavy part also due to weight too far towards the toes? This would create an off-balance situation where the body corrects with hips moving forward. Maybe it's posture and weight distribution where you want your chest move over your toes and an even weight distribution heel to toe?
100% It can go both ways really in terms of posture (how bent over your are) and your weight in feet. Ideally is pressure in balls of feet. If your upper body is way too far forward IT DEPENDS how far back you kick your hips.....if your upper body goes forward and you dont push hips back weight will be too far on toes. If you push hips back a bunch tho weight could actually be too far on heels So I've seen it go both ways. I went more into details on the setup part here as well may help: th-cam.com/video/5REpAHSNZd0/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUcRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIGVhcmx5IGV4dGVuc2lvbg%3D%3D
This is my feel virtual! I lift my toes just slight before going into my swing. Has helped with keeping my hips and chest back (and over each other) and "checking" my posture. It's easy to let all the weight go to your heels though and fall away. Balls of the feet like Eric said is the sweet spot!
I’m hitting the box behind me and getting a shoulder turn down towards the ball, however, am now hitting before the ball or at the ball. what’s going wrong?.
I like being on the wall pushing my right cheek into the wall recenter with the cheek still on the wall and left cheek on the wall but trying not to let the right cheek leave the wall until around impact
I found out not too long ago with my irons i had to stand up at address. It helps me get down. If i want to hit up on a driver i sink into my legs more at address helps me get vertical force. I used to be the opposite
always anomalies :) For every 1 Keegan who can make that setup work I can show you 100 regulars golfers who start like that and cant play worth a lick lol :)
Trail hip must not move out towards the target line/ball too soon or at all! Hips should move in a more elliptical motion rather than in a circle. This video seems to be a follow up to You Won't Believe How Easy This Move Makes The Downswing with Trevor Saltzman. I've been focusing on the hip movement and everything else seems to fall in place.
There is a second, other vital reason. IF the club head is not on plane in the downswing (i.e. over the top), your body will automatically stop or slow hip rotation. If you didn't you would pull it like crazy or pull-slice it. The club head MUST be from the inside i.e. on plane in order to turn through properly.
I meant no disrespect. Watch all of your videos and really enjoy them, but KB was the first thing that popped into my mind when I watched this. His address is crazy. Clubs look 6 inches too short for him!@@CogornoGolf
Get in friggin shape. It doesnt take but 20-30 minutes a day Do 3 sets 12 push ups 3 sets 25 sit ups 1 set of 20 body weight squats And look up a TH-cam video on lower back stretches. Idc what you do if you want to get better you have to be able to move. This is just starters for most people that do not do anything but think they'll get better at golf
The easy feel for players to get this is..... keeping the right heel down until impact. If you examine the 2 examples you show ..Hogan, and Hovland.... Both keep the right heel down until impact. Ludvig Aberg is also a good example. The master of keeping the right heel down is... Moe Norman. ;)
It is virtually impossible for your trail leg/hip to move forward if you keep the trail heel down. The moment that heel comes up... the thigh and hip moves forward.
Yep agreed I like that one.....Steve and I did some good ones on right foot and leg that effect things here you may like: th-cam.com/video/0vJn7x-wvp4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUhRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGZvb3QgcmlnaHQgbGVn th-cam.com/video/KxvJmqqBwTY/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUhRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGZvb3QgcmlnaHQgbGVn
@@CogornoGolf Yes. Rolling on the instep, keeping the trail heel down until impact... Just that swing thought alone, I find with my students, gets them working the lower body correctly, without much more input from me. ...and it helps in areas like the sequencing and timing of the downswing motion... also impact, release and follow through. It really sets the body up to do a lot of the good things automatically. Cheers Eric
People don't tell you that your right elbow pushes your left side out of the way .no thought other then you club beats your shirt buttons to the ball. Any sport your elbow controls your throw whether it is a club racket or football or baseball oranything you throw and unless you are trying to straight line your swing you are throwing your clubhead.

Those two should go through the details well!
Excellent, Eric!!
Thanks Bob!
Great Eric!
Thank you!
Would you say hips over ankles and shoulder over toes?
Yep...I like armpits over balls of foot and hip center over ankle. Butt line about a fist/clubhead behind heel line.
that would be optimal to allow rotation/prevent early extension.
not everyone will do it nor need to but it would stack the odds in the players favor
I love this, but as a tall guy who has a really long torso, I feel like I have to flex my knees way too much… any advice?
Wider feet at setup!
Great Vid Eric....awesome.
Thank you!
Great video!!!
Thanks George!
Is the focus the same with the woods? I seem to be able to manage this setup and move with my irons, but my driver/3 wood gets super sweepy.
In terms of the FEELS here.....yes, this would apply the same with all clubs.
The length/lie angle of the club would naturally distance some minor setup changes but in terms of the FEELS here....would be the same concepts throughout.
Another great video Eric 👍
Thank you!
Eric, what about weight distribution? Is the top-heavy part also due to weight too far towards the toes? This would create an off-balance situation where the body corrects with hips moving forward. Maybe it's posture and weight distribution where you want your chest move over your toes and an even weight distribution heel to toe?
100%
It can go both ways really in terms of posture (how bent over your are) and your weight in feet.
Ideally is pressure in balls of feet.
If your upper body is way too far forward IT DEPENDS how far back you kick your hips.....if your upper body goes forward and you dont push hips back weight will be too far on toes.
If you push hips back a bunch tho weight could actually be too far on heels
So I've seen it go both ways.
Hey Rob! Not sure....cant say for sure without seeing on video. Send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and we will get it sorted
What if I still have this problem even if I am pretty vertical with my setup?
Would need to see your swing Steve to say for sure
Could be back backswing pivot, shaft too steep, face to open, etc etc
I like being on the wall pushing my right cheek into the wall recenter with the cheek still on the wall and left cheek on the wall but trying not to let the right cheek leave the wall until around impact
I like that one a lot! Just make sure belt buckle still pushing toward target as left cheek goes back on into follow through
This is very timely. I usually have this issue when hitting longer clubs.
hope this helps you and you are well Jim!
Loved it. 🙏
Thanks Mark!
Excelente Eric!!
Thanks Juan!
I found out not too long ago with my irons i had to stand up at address. It helps me get down. If i want to hit up on a driver i sink into my legs more at address helps me get vertical force. I used to be the opposite
I like it!
Man, this and right hand dominating slices is my problem. And I can't for the life of me stop. Gonna take this to the range!
Hope it helps, Zach!
It's great to hear someone with the same opinion regarding setup. Change from your normal erect standing position as little as possible with each club
100%👊
Genius
Appreciate your support!
What about Keegan Bradley?
always anomalies :)
For every 1 Keegan who can make that setup work I can show you 100 regulars golfers who start like that and cant play worth a lick lol :)
😮😅
Trail hip must not move out towards the target line/ball too soon or at all! Hips should move in a more elliptical motion rather than in a circle. This video seems to be a follow up to You Won't Believe How Easy This Move Makes The Downswing with Trevor Saltzman. I've been focusing on the hip movement and everything else seems to fall in place.

“MUNICIPAL”….😂. That’s an awesome hat. And great video!!
Love Municipal! Thank you!

This video couldn’t have come at a better time for me lol
:) Glad to hear that!
Keegan Bradley
Yessir John---of course there will be some anomalies to everything :)
I meant no disrespect. Watch all of your videos and really enjoy them, but KB was the first thing that popped into my mind when I watched this. His address is crazy. Clubs look 6 inches too short for him!@@CogornoGolf
100%......99/100 golfers from his setup would early extend like crazy.....we see it everyday. He's that talented
Golden
Thank you!
Were all three of those guys me? Because all three of those guys are me.
:) Hope this one helps!
This is likely why many times I lose my balance forward over my toes.
could def be part of it!
I came for old Ben Hogan swing sequences.
Hard to beat :)
Gotta squeeze them glutes hey Eric! ✌️😊
always :)
This is getting confusing...
Feels like every 20 years the whole teaching script gets flipped again.
:)
Get in friggin shape.
It doesnt take but 20-30 minutes a day
Do 3 sets 12 push ups
3 sets 25 sit ups
1 set of 20 body weight squats
And look up a TH-cam video on lower back stretches.
Idc what you do if you want to get better you have to be able to move. This is just starters for most people that do not do anything but think they'll get better at golf
I mean just look at Eric. This dude's no slouch I bet he has a hell of a training program. Something I'd really be interested in seeing
Yep agreed I like that one.....Steve and I did some good ones on right foot and leg that effect things here you may like:

@@CogornoGolf Yes. Rolling on the instep, keeping the trail heel down until impact... Just that swing thought alone, I find with my students, gets them working the lower body correctly, without much more input from me. ...and it helps in areas like the sequencing and timing of the downswing motion... also impact, release and follow through.
It really sets the body up to do a lot of the good things automatically. Cheers Eric
The "Slammi' Sammy squat".
Old school Sam Sneed's technique is magic.
yessir
People don't tell you that your right elbow pushes your left side out of the way .no thought other then you club beats your shirt buttons to the ball. Any sport your elbow controls your throw whether it is a club racket or football or baseball oranything you throw and unless you are trying to straight line your swing you are throwing your clubhead.
Right elbow for sure a bit part! Details on that in recent video here: th-cam.com/video/hP366W2yYS4/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUWRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IGFybQ%3D%3D
