X4 Foundations: 7.0 Beta 1 - Testing 10 Rays vs a xenon I and K

  • Hello everybody,
    Did not had much hope for the Rays firepower, but wanted to test if the "blob": • X4 Foundations: Will ... , is still around in beta.
    So, I took my boron fleet for my usual around the universe patrol and, as luck would have it, a xenon I and K "volunteer" to assit me with my tests.
    Notes:
    - Yay....no more "blob" :D Tho, a quick "mating" attempt was made, one with the Shark and one amoung themselves. :P
    - hmm... upgrades in attack scrips? Sure, still clumsy, the ever present "Leeroy Jenkings" destroyer, with bonus "I will run by draining my shield while under fire" (huh!?), but not bad results. Was ready to do my usual tactic vs xenon I, have the interceptor Makos kill the turrets and my torpedo Hydras kill the capitals, but wanted to test only the Rays, and they did good. While some may argue that the I and K were distrated, what can I say...at least no more "blob"
    - I expect even better results if I do the, make a separate fleet with destroyers and order only the leader to attack - tactic, but w/o the "blob", maybe I don't need to do that anymore.
    So, in the end, what can I say, might as wel back up your saves, cuz it might be something about this update.

    It feels like they are completing an extremely difficult task =)
    They barely move, they perform strange maneuvers, but it seems like they can stick together as a group!
    By the way, from my point of view, RAY is the most powerful destroyer =)
    I collect it for 2L flasks (good against fighters, and in the vicinity they break the guns of Ships)
    x8 Guided missiles in the bow against ships loaded with heavy swarm missiles
    and the remaining turrets and rails. The DPS is excellent, the supply ship handles equipment well outside of combat.
    For air defense tasks, Guppies with rails work well, a squadron of 3 RAY and 2 GUPPIES with fighters comes out (Mako because of the speed, since the barracuda likes to fly away to hell knows where and then at its usual speed they will return more slowly, but maybe this has been corrected in this patch , haven't tested it yet)
    So a group of guppies is the most versatile unit; if there is supply, you can load the guppies with missiles to fight capitals, and put in interceptors to fight fighters, or vice versa.
    A group of guppies with rails, as an air defense, which has torpedo-carrying barracudas + Small trade ones for replenishment, and as an extra cargo bay
    3 guppies power!
    a mobile group that can handle a lot.
    Rey is good as a siege engine; if you charge unguided missiles and heavy classters, you can easily demolish 3-4 stations, but it will take a long time =)
    So that’s 400 missiles with 12k damage each
    That works out to 4,800,000 damage for one
    try to find stations that have more HP
    BOROONS Best!
    Although the Split Raptor is a sharpened universal thing,
    I made a funny build for unguided missiles (split shotgun missiles xD), so he flew up to the destroyer and demolished it in seconds (the victim was Behemoth)
    And the raptor can carry about 1900 missiles in my assembly)
    The rattlesnake is 1200, and also adds serious DPS.

      It’s really possible to make a smart AI and it will be a great game, taking into account the possibility of modding

      @@leonidnikityuk9460 I don't want to depress you but that is what many players said and hoped (me included) since the release of X3. I really don't think Egosoft can do it, they either don't have the money of the people for it.

      Too bad that the ingame experience does not confirm your optimistic view of missile Rays.😋

      10 Rays with 4 the first 2 turrrets, up and down, 4 dumbfire turrets in total, with 447 heavy cluster missile each.
      Great in theory, right?
      Well, there are a few problems:
      - the missile turrets would not fire, tried defend, atack all, some Rays firing with atack my target
      - the missile turrets would only fire at close range
      - the missile components on the aux ship went poof, and the Rays were almost empty, well those that fire anyway

      run out of missile in 3 minutes.
      In conclusion, theory is great, is the practice that fail us. 🤓

    Nice to see the ai being a bit competent.
    I wonder if splitting them up into two smaller groups would of worked better, and sending the other group to flank some. That way they may be able to more easily get past eachother and into gun range. Also could help if the xenon k got close to one group and forced it to retreat, that way the other group a bit away from them could keep up the pressure till the first group repositioned

      I could not be bothered with making multiple wings with the destroyers in my fleet. The most effort I'm willing to make is to temporary dismantle the 10 destroyers wing, make a single fleet with them, with bombard for commander roles, kill a target, then asign them back to the carrier. Everything beyond that enter in "too much micro for my taste" category. 😋

      x4 ai is in a really weird position from a fundamental design standpoint imo. It seems pretty clear to me that the intention is for the AI to be fairly independent and micro free. I can tell that by just how clunky it can be to try and micro the ai. The skill mechanic also embodies this, as what's the point of a pilots skill level if the game intended you to constantly micro them. Compare it to a game like nebulous fleet command, where the ai isn't really as independent, requiring the player to tell it where to go and what to shoot and just handling the movement, but is also built around seemless micro and player inputs. Then of course a real issue seems to arise with x4 when the independent ai not designed to be microed, still needs a bit of micro to be maximally effective.

      @@CreeperDude-cm1wv To be honest, the greatest enjoyment I get in X4 is sitting on the bridge of my flagship and have the AI do stuff, with as little intervention from me as possible. 🤓 That is why I enjoy super carrier gameplay so much, I bring my carrier in the middle of the enemy forces, select launched status for bombers and interceptors and just watch the fireworks, while focusing some random fighter, like any self-respecting armchair admiral. 😅

    Nice, looks promising. Maybe couple that with 2 Guppy with fighters focus on shield damage may be interesting.

      I used to have 5 Rays and 5 Guppies with 8 torpedo Baracuda each on bombard, as an anti capital force for my fleet, but ever since I've encounter the Kha'ak Ravager, I've sold the Guppies with fighter bombers asign to them. Since I've "bribed" Boso Ta, I would no longer encounter the Kha'ak capital, but just in case, I've made the change to 10 Rays instead.

      @@ragnos28 Ok, i was thinking about that because the Ray main gun is really weak against shield.

      @@nicolasletellier6162 Actually, the shield is the only good dmg it has, 7.300 mj, vs dmg to hull that is 4,000 mj. 😋

      @@nicolasletellier6162 Welp, the fact that most Rays would not fire, cuz too busy maneuvering, because formation who? did not helped matters. 😐

    Main problem seemed to be getting in each other's way. If they were to be split up into multiple groups to attack from a few different angles, they would have been even more effective.

      Yeah. You see, I keep them in the forward X shape formation (is the standard formation for ships under bombard role, and I just use it for any destroyers) that kept them nice and spread, but any attack command makes any formation go bye bye.
      Maybe someday, Egosoft will learn how to make ships to keep a bloody formation. 🤨

      ​@ragnos28 If you had 10 individual players for those 10 destroyers, and gave them all an attack command against a single target, do you think they would maintain formation? They might know to spread out better, but I doubt they would maintain some perfect formation while attacking a single target.

      @@michaelbennett7561 I don't have 10 individual players to assist me in game, I only have the AI.
      And if ships can fly in formations, they sure as hell atack in formations, just point the "nose" at the target. As for ships maintaining formation, a viewer gave me this game as an example: th-cam.com/video/gQy6JquanXM/w-d-xo.html , so apparently, it can be done, technology these days man... 😮

      Well, since the crew is boron, they can live to their pacifist ideals, since the Rays, for the most part, rarely kill anything. 🤪

    I've found the A.I especially when it comes to fleet attacks acts more stupid the worse your FPS is, recently upgraded from an 8700k/gt1080 to a x800x3d/4090 and the Fps in battles is smooth as butter until your throwing many hundreds of units around and they behave far better and don't seem to clog up or just stop firing at things like they do on my slower system, putting VRO in the mod list also makes things better as the longer engagement ranges means ships will stop and bombard from afar and not to the stupid mating dances.

      I don't think I will upgrade my 8700k/gt1070 any time soon. I was looking out of curiosity, at what I would replace my graphics card with, in case the current one would fail, and ...the prices were holy shit 😮 let alone a new system 😱

    Btw. Do you know if AI uses heat in any way? Maybe it's possible to slasher mod the destroyer main batteries and half their numbers and derpiness for the same dps?

      I think the AI uses heat, otherwise they would just keep firing. 🤔As for modding the main batteries, I've modd with annihilators the destroyers in my terran fleet (the only ones that I've actually named), but all others are just like they got out from the shipyard.

    Personally, i think that ai capital ships should forget that they have boos button. They do almost nothing useful and drain shields like crazy. 5-10 m/s speed boost in exchange for shields? Are you kidding me?

    I still like them in a mixed fleet. having them pin a XL ship to 1 or 0 mps is valuable. Letting them strip shields is valuable.
    But I still don't think I'd run pure Ray's, good or bad.

      Combined forces works best against capitals. And like I said, my backup plan in case the Rays derp out (more than usual, lol), was to have the interceptors Makos to defang turrets and the Hydra wing bombing with torpedoes.
      I don't trust any destroyers in the game to engage xenon capitals on their own.🧐
