    It is the biggest selling comic by one author. Batman and Superman have the unfair advantage of multiple authors and countless reboots. This is one story line

      Exactly, One Piece is by far the largest most detailed fantasy universe ever created. Imo it makes Game of Thrones look small by comparison.

      In term of world detail, only LOTR come close to one piece, but one piece is definitely #1. In term of character detail and backstory, Games of thrones is pretty strong and could be above one piece but then don't forget about the manga jojo's bizarre adventure who may be the #1 out of them all.

      If you think multiple authors is an advantage, you... are wrong. Very, very, very, almost embarrassingly wrong.
      Pretty much everything bad that's ever happened to any American comic character was the result of switching authors with different visions...

    I think one of my favourite things about one piece is how he saves islands.. by accident.
    Like his first fight with Buggy the clown. He wasn't out to save the town from Buggy, he just wanted his hat back.
    Alabasta, he was helping a ladies request and ended up saving the city.
    CP9, who cares about the world government? He just wants Robin back.
    It has the needs of Shonen Jump to be a hero saving people while still keeping them as the "bad" Pirates. That's some genius writing.

    I feel you left out one important factor:
    Those named characters once introduced in the canon version of the story do actually remain a part of that world.
    For example the Arlong pirates are one of the first enemies Luffy encounters, they as a group and one of their members returns hundreds of chapters later in the fishman arc.
    if a character is named and has entered the canon of One Piece it remains a part of that world till it dies leaving a lot of theories and debate open for fans.

    One thing that I feel is often overlooked in these one piece analysis videos, is how well oda handles power scaling. Often authors can get lost in the narrative and constant growth of the characters where the series ends with insanely unreasonable levels of power that it pulls the reader out of the experience (looking at you Toriko and Naruto). Oda introduces super early on what the strongest in the world are capable of through Mihawk, strongest swordsman in the world. Which makes Zoros path to this goal clearer in that we have an idea of what he will be able to do later on in the series. Same goes for the admirals with Aokijis first introduction in the show and so on. Its been overall pretty consistent and has helped to avoid those asspull moments common in shounen. Of course the manga isn't over and this usually a problem in the last couple arcs, I have complete faith in Goda, may he stay healthy and creative.

    Finally started it 2 months back, currently on episode 202, the series has been incredible so far although I had a rocky start with getting used to the large amount of episodes.
    Update 1 month later: so I've made it up to episode 615 and I've been doing nothing but binge watching this series as much as I possibly can for the last month and let me tell you it has been an emotional rollercoaster and a half with a twist around every corner and yes Oda successfully managed to make me cry over a ship, and I've loved nearly every arc that's come my way except from the first 2/3 of thriller bark and fishman island but other than that I've had a fantastic time with this show so far that I will not forget throughout my life.

    I just finished reading the Skypea arc (I think that's what its called) and whoo boy. For me, the greatest appeal to Oda's storytelling is the way he starts off an arc with many seemingly unrelated plot threads, gradually bringing them together as the arc progresses, before finally tying them all together to one simple action that resolves the whole conflict; in Skypea's case, the ringing of the bell. There's always a sense of growing dread and the scale of the conflict gets bigger and bigger as the story narrows down and comes together towards the climax.
    It can only really be described as epic, and Oda as a genius.

Then Arlong's douchebaggery escalated to stealing Nami's treasure and lying about it so she would remain his cartographer slave.
      It was emotionally intense watching Luffy take on Arlong and then destroy the map room in Arlong Park, finally finishing Arlong. It was so satisfying and so well designed. Fights aren't truly interesting unless the emotional/philosophical/personal battle is apparent and sufficed through the physical fight.

    4:06 wanna know something insane? SuperEyePatchWolf said it would take another decade for One Piece to outsell batman. It's only been just over 4 years since he released that vid and One Piece is only 4-5 million away from becoming the 2nd best selling comic in existence.
    EDIT: One Piece has just become the 2nd best selling comic in existence withe 490 million over Batmans 484 million, on its 24th anniversary no less. With the inclusion of volume 99 & 100, im certain it will reach 500 million and rival both the harry potter franchise & the entire dr seuss collection.

      That's not too shocking in 2021 considering that comic book stores are filled with manga just to actually make some sales since new western comic books aren't as appealing as they once were.

      @@mobius7988 I don't know why the american comic book industry is so against trying something new. There's an insane plethora of stunningly good western webcomics, some of which honestly look and are written better than books by professional artists. I think a western equivalent of Shonen Jump, showcasing various comics by various different artists, would sell gangbusters.

    "What gets me here is that this (Senor Pink) is one tiny unconsequential character in One Piece's world and yet still Oda manages to imbue him with the sense of depth and grounding that many writers fail to give even their main protagonist. And that's to say nothing of the amazing job Oda has done in establishing the main major heroes and vilains of One Piece's story."

    My dream for one piece once it ends, is for madhouse and Oda to team up and give one piece the hunter x hunter treatment. Vastly condensing its story to only its major points with consistent animation and action scenes. Not because I think some story arcs aren't needed but I think it's necessary to make it digestible while still maintaining the feel of a grand adventure. Mainly due to the fact that I think even if you tell someone where to start, just the sheer amount that's either ahead or behind them is frightening enough to discourage anyone from starting.

It's not super far along right now, but episodes are being released at a rate Toei could only dream of, so it's definitely worth looking into if a faster pace is your cup of tea.

      It had great powers and explanations for them
      It had a lot of great characters
      Honestly it could have easily been a giant series right next to one piece
      There was just one problem and that was toei screwing everything up
      They completely changed the feel of the series
      The anime ended way too soon and left a bad taste in peoples month's so they never read the manga
      Honestly when toriko manga was cancelled it was at its hight and the last chapter showed that
      They just left the planet to explore space and there were multiple different universes, 2 of torikos demons didn't even get a single meal
      The manga had a couple more years but jump screwed it up and canceled it (sadly it wasn't the only one)

      A lot of people don't start One Piece because they complain about the art style but I don't understand that problem. When I first started watching it, I noticed nothing about the art style, just seemed like a regular anime.

    This is gonna be a bit long but I just wanted to gush about the show.
    I grew up with One Piece, I started with the god awful 4kids dub that was on TV and my brother and I ended up watching it together online in the early days of the internet, back when OneManga was still running. He continued watching it without me and I would occasionally sit down with him and watch it without context. I ended up seeing a lot of random parts of the Impel Down arc through this. I don't remember a whole lot about it but it was entertaining and a lot of fun to watch.
    Years later after dropping out of school I decided to try rewatching the series, this would have been around 2013, the Arlong Park arc, Drum Island arc and Enies Lobby arc all hit me pretty hard as someone who had been isolated from not just their friend group but from almost everyone. At the time I was living with my mother and no one from school made the effort to check on me until years later. I ended up forgetting where I was and losing interest around the introduction of Brook. But it was Robin that probably hurt the most, I was bullied a lot through high school, treated as a freaky quiet nerd. The type of person boys would dare each other to date because it was a form of punishment. I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety and progressively got worse over the years.
    I am 23 now, I am 2 years older than the series at this point and I'm rewatching it with my girlfriend. I saw that the series was on Netflix and decided to try catching up this time. I watched most of it alone but as I got to Arlong Park my girlfriend started getting interested, she sat down with me for most of it and then dropped off again as the Baratie arc started, she started picking up more interest when Baroque Works showed up and we watched all of Drum Island together and it was the most I've ever seen her cry about a piece of media. Chopper hit me hard as a teen when I was isolated for years after dropping out, and it hit me hard again because of quarantine and the fact that I decided to cut myself off from my family years ago because of abuse.
    I identify a lot with Chopper because of the themes of social isolation and wanting to find a friend that becomes your family. Like I can not put into words how upsetting it was seeing him all beat up over that mushroom. And then Enies Lobby happened. I remember Robin's story hitting me much worse when I was a teen, I felt hopeless about making friends and pretty convinced I was never going to find people that understand me. I think it hurts a lot less now knowing that I was wrong.
    One of the reasons I was convinced that I was going to be alone is that I am trans, and for a long time I kept it a secret and felt like if I told people I would be treated like a freak and isolated again. Once I started getting out and socialising with people again, I didn't want to put them off (I have a lot of conservative male friends who make a lot of anti trans jokes) and I was worried they were going to be hostile to me or cut me out of their lives. So I stayed quiet for almost 10 years. And when I started dating my girlfriend (who is trans) I came out to her and she encouraged me to come out to my other friends and I had never felt more relieved that the vast majority have been supportive. I'm talking about this because One Piece has always been something around me, something that put my loneliness into a story about a human-deer and a girl with the ability to grow arms.
    And it's not like the whole experience has been smooth, I got kicked out of a house for being trans, the whole time I was there my housemate screamed about me constantly and threatened to throw my things out into the street. Even as I packed my stuff into a trailer she was threatening to call the cops on me, once I had moved to the next place - I felt scared of my housemates because of my old one, I knew they were good people but I was legitimately traumatised. I got paranoid they were talking about me in whispers, which I knew was irrational but it made me feel anxious . One week after moving the landlord showed up and told me we had two months and that he was going to kick us out so he could have his house back during COVID. I was homeless for the 3rd time during a plague and ended up asking my girlfriend if she wanted to move in together and that is where we are at. I bring this up because I see some parallels between me and Chopper, social rejection, the fear and paranoia that comes from that, the relief when you find people that love and understand you.
    It got kind of off topic but I wanted to talk about how this series has made me feel, I tear up a lot when I think about Drum Island. It's my favourite arc and Chopper is my favourite character and I just find it funny that I relate more to a talking transforming reindeer than to any other Straw Hat. We love these characters because we see ourselves in them, and their stories are funny, heartbreaking and exciting. The best decision I made during COVID was to rewatch this series and now it has become a nightly thing for me and my girlfriend, after Drum Island she's watching all of it with me and we are mid-way through Thriller Bark.
    Also "Ain't nobody born into this world to be alone" is one of my favourite quotes of the series and Sol was a great character, it felt like his words were aimed at a younger me and that just fucks me up a lot.

      It is so sweet to hear how OP has influenced peoples' lives. As for me, during a difficult emotional time I had in school, I would remember Luffy climbing the Drum island mountains and it motivated me very much. Just his raw willpower in general made me pull through many tough moments.
      I think you might appreciate the Whole Cake arc since it has a lot to do with family, and of course there are plenty of other amazing moments I cannot spoil, please continue to watch everything! :)

    I'm glad someone went through the trouble of proving how amazing One Piece is.
    Honestly it's one of my favorite manga series.
    I don't watch the anime a lot though.
    I usually just watch my favorite fights from the manga.
    I just prefer to get the story from the manga itself, it's less time consuming, it's Oda's direct vision and it's overall a wonderful journey reading every panel.
    I can't even imagine watching the anime in its entirety.
    Especially when it takes me 4-5 minutes tops to finish a single chapter.
    I heavily recommend reading the manga to get into one piece!

      Currently doing it. I had watched the anime before (finished the Skypea arc) but dropped, I loved the good things about it, but it just had too much filler. So now I decided to "restart" my One Piece experience by reading from page 1. ...One of the best decisions of my life.

    • @nfzeta128
      @nfzeta128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Th0tSlAyErIII
      @Th0tSlAyErIII 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      nfzeta i agree, BUT... Filler is something that, with no exception, slows down the flow and pacing of a story and if there's too much of it, then it can sometimes ruin the experience.

    • @nfzeta128
      @nfzeta128 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Super J-star I actually think One Piece hits an exception, at least for the most part. The anime usually has the filler in between arcs and given how arcs go it actually switches things from a seemingly too fast pace to a normal one. In the manga you don't usually feel it but after a long and impactful arc in the anime the filler arcs are a nice wind-down while also letting you further explore the characters.
      As far as I'm concerned other than a few exceptions the filler in One Piece elevates the story.

    • @akhandpathi7461
      @akhandpathi7461 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      nfzeta yeah I agree with you mate, One Piece fillers are really well done, unlike a certain anime with ninjas in it. Don't get me wrong Naruto is my all time favourite minus the fillers. But one piece fillers are gorgeous, I still remember that Rainbow mist filler and the crazy creativity put in those episodes

    I think one of One Pieces's main draws for me is just the childlike joy that's in every single episode. Watching Luffy fight and get into the most random bullshit with his crew every episode is great, and even the small moments like him and Chopper being obsessed with cool bugs and finding the biggest stick over the course of Sky Island. It's been ages since I've watched a show where I can't hate any of the main cast. It's just impossible to even dislike any of the Straw Hats

      re' you The problem for me is that I get tired. Tired of the same book, game, manga, anime, etc. The longer the series, generally the slower the pace. Being long can be bad for so many reasons. Sometimes I just don't want to wait more. I don't want to keep catching up year after year. Eventually with most series I just stop caring and move on because it takes too long to finish. Other times even if it's complete, the slow pacing makes me get bored and I can't struggle to the end. Or even if the pacing is good, sometimes it eventually just gets boring watching the same types of adventures, the same world and the same character. Seeing a series that's, say, 26 episodes long and has great pacing and hits me with a complete plot with a satisfying ending.. That's often much more enjoyable than something insanely long.
      It's like eating different kinds of hamburgers for every meal every day. Even with slight changes, a lot of people will get bored eventually.

Most of his shows are fairly dark all the way through and have lots of theming and symbolism. One piece has moments of that but it's later on and it's not the main focus. One piece is far from a turn your brain off anime/manga but is also not one where you have to kick your brain into overdrive. At least I think so, right Alec?

    Wow. Man I never knew One Piece was so detailed. I always liked the cartoony style, and can remember watching the 4Kids dub back in the day, but I've always written One Piece off as being junk since it was at the top of the Shonen Jump list. I thought surely it's only lasted this long just because it'd garnered many fans over the years. But I think I'm really seeing why so many people like it. And hearing Senor Pink's story fucking broke me, and that was just your explanation of it. I can't even begin to imagine the other stories that are told. I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna plunge into One Piece; fuck watching the anime though, there's over 900 episodes of that. I can read faster than I can watch.

There's been times where I'd stop reading for a few months but then hop right back in. Work keeps me away from it more than I'd like, but I've just finished Volume 33/Chapter 316 having finished the AWESOME Skypiea arc and starting Water Seven, near the end of the Davy Back Games now. I can't really get enough of this series. I've been picking up those 3-in-1 Omnibuses and mowing through them.

It's my most favorite one piece movie (I liked it more than Strong World, which is my second fav op movie and I recommend it to new viewers too) and though it's darker than its usual mood, it still felt like an adventure, the comedic timings are great, I love the conflicts that happened within the crew members, and the animation was superb.

      Yeah I've seen many people who are turned off by One Piece because of it's unusual style. You'll really have to discard the thought of what makes a conventional story to really appreciate One Piece, mainly because it's so not plot-driven. Try giving it another chance when you feel up to it.

    • @feliperodrigues5437

      The Arlong arc is when the "real" One Piece starts for me, and it only gets better from there, so read or watch at least until you finish Arlong arc, then decide if you want to keep going or not.

    • @Natboy129
      @Natboy129 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aaron Koh It wasnt quite the unusual style, Im a visual person and One Pieces art just... Repulses me.... I admire the expression and creativity that goes into it, but i dont like it that much at all. And since that wasnt changing anytime soon I decided to just give up, plus the story came to a screeching halt which i couldnt force myself through. The promise of "It gets better its just got a really slow start" wasnt enough for me.

      Joshua Jung How stupid can you be?

  • @PurpleZebras150
    @PurpleZebras150 7 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    I've heard a lot of different reasons for people not watching the "top" or "most popular" anime (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Cowboy Bebop, etc). "It's overrated", "It looks stupid", "It's too long!", "Aren't those kinds of anime for cringey weeaboos?"...
    I, too, was turned away from One Piece and the other "all time best" anime for some of these same reasons and more, and it took years after I first started watching anime to even try to watch them. Surface value, I can see why people are turned away. I know people who've given One Piece an honest try and not liked it - to each their own.
    But for those of you out there who have not seen One Piece - give it a try. You may very well be missing out on something you might really enjoy. Don't take other people's word for it, you have to give it a try yourself. Videos like this one that ask you to try One Piece are only scratching the surface of why you should watch it.
    I think the thing that most sets it apart from other anime is the vastness and uniqueness of the universe Eiichiro Oda has created, but most importantly the way he gives value to the characters and the story in a way that emotionally strikes me more than any other anime has been capable of.
    Please just give it a try :)

      The animation turns me away from One Piece.. seriously.
      After watching:
      •Hellsing Ultimate
      •Monster
      •Black Lagoon
      •Samurai Champloo
      •Berserk
      It's hard to watch One Piece based off the animation alone..
      But, I had the same feeling about:
      •One Punch Man
      •Mob Psycho 100
      •Naruto
      •Bleach
      I enjoyed those..
      I really want to give this a chance, but reading the comments? It seems everybody prefers the manga over the anime.. I truly just want to watch an anime, is this really worthwhile before I walk the plank off into the deep end?

      I don't know why, but I genuinely laughed out loud.. so by chance do you know the episode that would be of the arc you speak of?

      Just because it's better than a series that is infamous doesn't mean it's not bad
      If I murdered 1 person I'd still go to prison or get a death sentence. Saying "well that guy murdered more people" doesn't do anything.
