  • Welcome to our tour of historic downtown Leesburg, Virginia! This is our hometown and we'll show you the significant buildings of this charming Northern Virginian town, as we explore the history of Leesburg, VA.
The Town of Leesburg is located in Loudoun County, Virginia--just a little over 30 miles from Washington, DC. Leesburg was established in 1758 and has a rich history that spans three centuries. This is where we met when we were teenagers, growing up here!
We decided to tour our hometown and began our tour at some buildings that were among the first to be built in Leesburg, VA. Next to the Loudoun Museum is a log cabin, which is an example of a covenant house. We'll tell you more about the history of covenant houses in Leesburg and stop by a covenant house that we even took our engagement photos in front of!
There are lots of things to do in Northern Virginia and Leesburg is one of the best towns to visit in Loudoun County. It's filled with bars, shops, restaurants--and history! Most people walk around downtown Leesburg, without realizing the history behind its Loudoun St. and King St. The crossroads of these two roads were integral to the commerce of Leesburg and--even today--houses most of Leesburg's shops and restaurants.
One of the main buildings in Leesburg, VA is the Loudoun County Courthouse. This courthouse has existed as long as Leesburg has and is in the heart of downtown. From the Civil War to historic court cases, this courthouse has been the focal point for a lot of significant events in this historic town in Virginia.
We next ventured to the Thomas Balch Library, which was constructed in 1922 as a memorial to Leesburg-native, Thomas Balch. This history and genealogy library is one of the cutest buildings in the Town of Leesburg.
An unlikely place to visit in Leesburg is one that has a lot of history regarding slavery in Virginia. We traveled to the original site of the old Methodist Meeting House, whose congregation split over the issue of slavery. Those separate congregations still exist today: Leesburg United Methodist Church and Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
A popular tourist attraction in Leesburg is Dodona Manor, which was the former home of General George C. Marshall. The creator of the Marshall Plan owned this house, with his wife, for nearly 18 years. Dodona Manor offers tours of the home and gardens.
A spot in Leesburg, VA that we often visit is Market Station. Famous for its restaurants, such as Tuscarora Mill, this shopping area used to be a grain mill. This area used to be Leesburg's wharf district and was a center for manufacturing and transportation. It also happens to have one of our favorite restaurants!
We had a lot of fun touring our hometown! We realized how much we took the history of the Town of Leesburg for granted and now have a fresh perspective on where we grew up.

Fantastic historic travel video! We've just discovered that my husband's 8th great grandfather, Francis Awbrey/Aubrey (born 1690), owned the land that Leesburg is built upon. It was a tobacco plantation, which was passed to his son, John, then sold to John Carlisle, who then sold it to Nicolas Minor. 😊

    Leesburg is a beautiful
Historic town I've heard mentioned, but never knew anything about. I enjoyed seeing the log cabin since I lived in one built in 1741. Also I am Methodist and that segment was interesting to me. All and all a great "get acquainted" with Leesburg blog! Keep up the good work.

We don’t think so. You should be able to pay a daily fee, depending on what facilities you’re trying to use. The fee is around $6.00 per person.
