I've watched this video at least fifteen times it's amazing to see how it looked back then at what is in the landscape now
Born and raised here. I hate what Richmond has become.
I live there 25 years ago and I'm glad I can't see what it's become. I used to love driving Monument Avenue.
I liked some of the "now" pictures, but as a person prejudiced against modern (post 1940's) development, I hate to see those skyscrapers in the background. I'm glad a few buildings from the past were preserved.

After 13 yrs in richmond virginia....me and my family moved to Tennessee.. but the memories and friendships that me and my family had will never be forgotten
I moved to Richmond from East tennesee in 1988 and I'm about ready to get the hell out of here move back to upper east Tennessee by kingsport area.

Ahhh this would be so much more enthralling were the locations and dates included. Some are obvious, but not all.
As someone who has never been to the East coast,none of these were obvious for me. Locations and dates would have been very insightful.
Which ones were obvious? I literally lived in RVA, had two different apartments in Carytown, and a third a litter further off towards than fan/school on Grace Street. That was back in college, but it wasn't that long ago, less than a decade. I couldn't recognize sh*t, lol. I very much wanted too though!
@@conclavecabal.h0rriphic some were obvious to folks like me who studied the Civil War, like Robert E Lee's home, the Confederate White House, etc. But no, I wouldn't think any of it is obvious to the casual observer. I suppose the Poe museum would be because it says it on the building lol

I love these "Then and Now" videos as they fade from one age to another. I enjoy looking to see what, if anything, has been changed and how a lot of those buildings are still there. And as interested in seeing what buildings aren't. Well done. 😊👍

Love seeing the pictures of the Old south I have been blessed to be born and raised in. Beautiful seeing the historical homes and buildings preserved and still a part of today. Such a rich history we come from

@Dogsoldier 1950 so that's roughly 2,149 more blacks lynched than whites. Of course this is just based off the reported lynchings but if anything the unreported lynchings would just make the divide even bigger as many black lynchings went unreported at a far higher rate than whites

the Unknown Source...Did you get the chance to drive Monument Avenue and see the destruction of almost every monument? it is so disgusting! It is part of this Nation's history...and whether good or bad...it is still our history...there to remind everyone where the South was once and where we are today. Is our nation a perfect Nation...of course not. Will it ever be a perfect Nation...of course not. It is because this great Nation is a Nation of people, and people are not perfect, but we have a system of government, based on that incredible document called the U.S. Constitution, and the so very critical Bill of Rights, that gives us the means of addressing things that we do not agree with and the ability to vote those people into office who will do what benefits legal Americans and benefits businesses ( ethically and legally ), and to vote out those politicians who will not do the will of the people. This great Nation does NOT belong to any political party, or to any corporation, or banking institution, or special interest group, or any religion. It belongs to ..."We, the People..." And it is our duty...yes, our DUTY...to insure that our elected politicians follow the Constitution and especially the Bill of Rights, and to vote them OUT OF OFFICE if they do not. The Democratic party has openly and fully endorsed Socialism...the very opposite of a free America, and it is stunning to see and hear so many seemingly intelligent people gladly supporting it.

Visiting from England I had the pleasure of visiting Richmond in 2012 when travelling all round the United States. Saw in one photo a walk along the river and under a tunnel where I walked and although not shown in the film a monument/box where a black guy had made an escape from slavery and massive walls built to hold back flood waters. Had a really enjoyable time in this beautiful city and everyone I met was extremely charming, hope to return one day to explore it's history in more detail.
Don't risk it unless you are black. Too dangerous. That is what the communists have done to America. We are in the early stages of WWIII now, against the globalism masters this time.

As an individual who was born in VA and who has lived in four different countries including the UK, I will say, as much as I love travelling, I always love returning to VA and admiring the rich history of the state.
@@pariswright7094 Wrong and ignorant of the facts. i am in that tiny minority of Americans who actually have a passport. I lived abroad as an expat for nearly a decade and am thoroughly familiar with the third world. You probably haven't. Go live in the third world for a period of years (not two weeks), then get back to us about it. Preferably, learn and speak their language fluently, as I did, so that you are more aware of what is going on around you there.
Richmond Virginia is my favorite city
I live in Arlington but have visited Richmond many times. I always enjoy seeing this beautiful place.
My wife and I, were just in Richmond last week and have spent the past month coming and going. We love the area and how polite people are their. Coming from Salem, Va but grew up around and in the Richmond area it definitely brings back memories and how different it has changed since the 80's and early 90's when I remember.
Lived in Richmond from 1981 to 1986, and again from 1989 to 1994. Haven't been there since 2001 on a visit; will be planning a visit. It's changed and many of the people I knew from those days are no longer with us, too, or are just somewhere else. Feeling nostalgic.

I really miss Richmond. It is so nice but there is a county divide that will never let it reach its full potential.
I lived and worked there and courted the love of my life there in the late 60's and early 70's. I really liked Richmond and the people there. I waited for the girl to finish college and she met and married someone else. Well!
Once Stone boy gets done with it this is all we will have left of Richmond is memories and pictures.

I keep telling people, over and over that Richmond VA is one of the most beautiful cities in America, and perhaps in the top 10. Stunning to say the least.
Truth Betold65....this last July, I visited some dear friends in Richmond. I hadn't been back to Richmond since I left way back in about 1980. I told my friend that I particularly wanted to drive down Monument Avenue; once a beautiful avenue with the Civil War monuments at the intersections of several blocks. Monument Avenue also has a great many houses; and an old Catholic church ( I think) that has amazing architecture, that dates back many decades, all along the streets. All of the monuments had all been torn down,save a couple, with graffiti covering what bases were left. I felt like crying. Just as the first commenter, Fools On the Hill, above so very accurately said, how are we to be reminded of this Nation's past and how far we have come...if there is nothing left to see and to remind us?

I was born in Virginia and lived in Virginia for the last 60 years.
My brother was born in Richmond 62 years ago, lived there for about 5 years until my dad was tranferred to Omaha. it was a cultural shock moving to the midwest! LOL.but living in Richmond, saw so much history, went to Jamestown on a school field trip,loved living there..A state rich in history and beauty..Live now in S.C. but have traveled back there.

Ah RVA. I had some random guy try to sell me a snub nose for 40 bucks, right on broad street- in broad daylight no less. It was fun living there for a couple of years though. I had an apartment right in carytown- sometimes when it was nice I'd walk to my classes. The area surrounding Richmond is a smoldering pile of sh*t though. The place is crawling with junkies and panhandlers knocking on your car windows. Classy times. Its fascinating seeing these old photographs and imagining the lives of the people who lived there long before us...

I worked in downtown Richmond for many years and I recognized some of these buildings from the "then" pictures. When I was in Nimes, France years ago I saw a structure, I think it was a temple. I was struck by how much it looked like the Capitol building in Richmond. I had good reason to think that as I learned later that Thomas Jefferson used it as a model for the Richmond Capitol building.
Went to the Traedgar Iron works museum a few years ago, where all cannon was made for Confederacy. Fascinating history and a do not miss. Glad it made ur list here.
Not ALL cannon, but about 90%.
Some were made in Athens, GA.
So sad what to witness the destruction of beautiful historic Monument Avenue and the decline of Richmond.

I feel sorry for all the home owners on Monument Ave. I hope they can sell their houses while they can make a profit. Then I hope the stupid city leadership pays the price for the consequences of it's decisions to let the city become what it has as the civil war tourism drys up in Richmond. As well as the state of Virginia. I hope the citizens of the city of Richmond hold them accountable.

...And the Jefferson Davis and Columbus statues weren't removed by any kind of political process at all, just torn down by the Marxist mob, like a crew of modern Jacobins or Mao's Cultural Revolution goons. That isn't a democratic process at all, especially as the polling showed that wasn't what the voters wanted. But, again, idealism that ignores the popular will is typical of you communists.
And, as far as "traitors" go, so were Washington, Jefferson and Paine, at least to the British crown, but they won the war, so no one gets to call them that. Treason is a curiously flexible business in American history. However, judging from your commie co-conspirators in Portland, looks as if you are tearing down their statues also, Well, except for Paine, since he never had a statue there in the first place.

Don't want to be critical but I don't like the slow fades bc you're looking at a garbled mess for a few seconds and then you lose the comparison. They should alternate back and forth a few times w some very quick fades maybe. Otherwise great!
This landscape was not from 5 years ago. The people in the pictures are from the 18 hundreds.
