the term 'outsider art' always makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.. it, not always but often, goes hand in hand with a condescending, patronising tone, like "oooh look how weird it is!" To me it's weirder that we can draw a line of supposedly concrete definition between different kinds of expression based on how 'normal' you are. Obviously I'm glad i can learn about all these amazing musicians, but if anything we're the outsiders being so fascinated+surprised with other perspectives on art + life
I find "Vernacular art" to be a better definition for the reasons you point out. That seems to be the widely accepted label in visual art, and I'd prefer it in the musical world, too.
This is 14 years old but for me outsider music helped me realize that there is no such thing as a good song or a bad song as long as you are expressing a music that is inside you. The music might not be conventionally good compared to the charts we have all grown up with but that is not the point. the point of art is to express not to impress.
"Disinfo" was the first place I heard about BJ Snowden, so I am grateful to them and to Irving for bringing her to my attention. Yet I don't know how to feel about the whole "Outsider" label and BJ's inclusion in this. I personally don't think she should be included with a twirling reverend, a guy making fart noises on his hand, or "Lazy and Crazy". She is more along the lines of Daniel Johnston, Shonen Knife, and the B52s. People with unique voices, original sounds, and unusual subject matter.
The author they speak to is insufferable, but I'm so glad I bought this $10 Disinfo Tv DVD at Hastings back in 2007ish It truly opened my mind to some interesting concepts.
Wow I was surprised to see such negative feedback to something I wrote that I wasn't even sure what side I was on. I think I was getting at that there are myriad tunings one can have for say the guitar and I assume any instrument. And beautiful music could be made from any of them even a so called out of tune instrument. It might only sound better because you are conditioned to that tunning. Now I've become convinced that that is the case. We only love a certain tune because we are taught.
Yes but it is your opinion that something sucks. Someone else's' opinion might be that it is amazing. More people tuned into one thing doesn't make it better or worse. I'm not sure I'm even into the term outsider art. It is still a label. Everyone must then draw a line somewhere as to what is good of bad or whatever. This is what becomes impossible maybe. No one will draw the same line. whats grating mediocrity for you might be revelatory specularity to another. Balance is always changing.
While I kind of agree with posthumanhero that this is some kind of silly marketing gimmick, don't know what tuning instruments would do. I mean anyway your instrument is tuned is the way that it is tunned. Some might think that Flipper didn't know how to tune there instruments. I don't know. Yah know what? I don't have any idea. Were all right sometimes. We all have funny tastes in music and it should all be available to experience. Let's all be authentic and have a good time. That's bogus man!
Not, it is just a map to find what you interest on, the try-hard intellectual are people like you that tries to show smart you are by pushing people categorization down... Imagine it like computer folders...
Outsider music is pure music with no preconceptions …just humans expressing themselves in a really moving and beautiful way.

In Italy we have Mariottide, a plurirattistated artist
we love BJ Snowden!
@muskypucker Not only did BJ Snowden study at Berklee, but that has no importance since "suck at music" doesn't mean anything to start with anyways.
I don't thiNk anyone said she sucked. I

CURLY TOES
Too much indentification... :3
Fellow cluster A people!
@kindofobvious Well, it is weird because it is different than the rest. Now, if it s worse or better, now that requires a very long discussion.
Harvey Sid Fisher
That dude at the end is soooo creepy!
No, it's good because it's good - it just happens to be bad at the same time.
Just be aware...drugs can do this to you...what?
lmao
Blech, this is another useless term for try-hards who want to be perceived as intellectual about music. It's similar in effect to the word "arthouse".
