I rented the new (2023+) non-PHEV Prius in Japan last week through Toyota Rent-a-Car, and I was incredibly impressed. Such a well-rounded, practical, efficient vehicle. And the looks, it's just so good-looking now. Toyota absolutely knocked it out of the park with this generation.
It's not as practical inside. Don't underestimate that. One of the key advantages of a Prius was how practically spacious it was inside carrying cargo.
Brilliant channel! Brilliant car! Had Prius cars for the last 20 years; never let me down. Saved so much money on maintenance, fuel and time not wasted in the garage. No need to worry about expensive clutch, starter motor or alternator changes, either. Totally recommended 100%
I bought a 2017 Prius Prime new. I have always thought the front end was more Lexus than Toyota. My running average for more than six years is 97.6 mpg (US gallons). I am very interested in the new version Prius Prime.
Yeah huu... The last IS was a success in term of design, but everything I see now from Lexus are Boxy SUV's with horrendous lines. It seems like the engineers drawing the Toyotas are not invited in the Lexus headquater.
MAN Toyota is really stepping up its game! For me this is basically the ideal car: Super frugal, thanks to hybrid technology, low roof line and seat position (all which I like), sporty drive feeling, good/enough luggage space. For me who drives most kms on holidays, this seems ideal: No worries about congestion at the charger whilst allowing me to drive an EV on 99% of all other driving. I wish it was a bit cheaper though.... As usual EXCELLENT review by Autogefühl !👏👏👏 Not everybody wants a resource wasting SUV!

It's great to see a sensibly sized electric car rather than ridiculously sized SUV's that will never go off road or carry skiing equipment. When I was at school parents picked up their kids in cars. Today they pick up their kids in trucks, juggernauts and shipping containers. The world may have gone mad but at least you can count on superb reviews by Thomas. Thank you.
The Prius now is truly a gorgeous looking vehicle for the first time since its inception. The interior is modern, smart and clean. And that colour is also amazing. Toyota finally nails it.
The exterior is amazing, what a true transformation from previous generations. Interior is a bit mixed, some seemingly cheap solutions but I love that they keep a bunch of buttons for controls.
Great and very detailed review from Thomas as always, what a pleasure to watch! Also want to point out filming and color\developing job - nice proper contrast helps to enjoy those exterior shots, I didn't expect that I would be able to fall in love with prius but after your filming I'm pretty close to that. Thanks to the team of Autogefuhl ❤ great job
This was the first of your reviews I've seen and the best of the Prius discussions. Since we are the same height, it was especially useful for me. Thanks.
I have to be honest, this is one of the very first cars that actually looks like the "futuristic concept cars" we have seen for so long. Toyota finally was able to make it.
As ever a great review, thank you. The first thing I find interesting is that I could do almost all my usual mileage in this car on the battery. The ICE is there when I need to go further, faster, or both. The second thing this car demonstrates is that you do not need a huge battery with all that added weight and expense. I think ever bigger batteries, heavier cars, ever more complex engineering work arounds, and ever greater expense is a design dead end. On batteries Toyota have announced this month that they have got solid state to work in time for 2027 models, so lighter batteries for a given range are nearly here. I like the UI/UX decisions in this car so much more than in the German premium brands. For instance I find the current Mercedes models look absolutely wonderful inside but verge on being unusable because of the overuse of touch screens, capacitive buttons, and simply too many things to change or set. A three way comparison between this Prius, the new Honda Civic, and the Mazda MX30 R EV would be an interesting take on where state of the art small PHEVs currently are.
I love these things. They’re so awesome. It’s just a shame, as some other commentators have said, that we don’t get this in the UK anymore because we demand new developments in battery electric and zero emissions…
Apparently it's to do with the SUV body style being more popular in the UK. The CHR fills that gap. There is an official statement from Toyota explaining this ( possibly on the Top Gear site but it's definitely out there ). For taxi users they are suggesting the Corolla Sports Tourer
I really like the wacky design. Toyota makes some of the best practical cars out there, but they've always looked and felt boring, so it's good to see something that stands out.
@@autogefuehl i wonder why honda insight was taller than s2000 , areodynamics and not rolling over matters there too lol, especially if you can get grippier tire on for fun (they sold as manual and hybrid toghtehr in a car) . maybe the customers were too lazy to get into and out the car? preserving momentum can be fun and is better for longveity agaisnt battery degradation, fuel loss, lubrication usage etc, to soem extent its better for tires longveity too . its not just for saving money its supposed to also be for minimizing reelase of suppsoedly endocrine disrupting "forever chemicals" sort of stuff from todays heavily petrol based tires. if cars got super light again we might be abel to go back to natural rubber from trees like it used to be , or at least have less petrol in the mix sort of thing, or maybe some harder plastic sort of thing so it doesnt wear so much. ................................climte change prdiction have been so non accurate and they dont even agree on whats happening, so i personally dont care, especpially as theyve been using anti climte change as a excuse for taxing productivity, controlling people more, etc , such as road use tax by ulez cameras, esg score "how blackrock conqiered the world" by colbert report on substack , stuff funded from pinted money from federal rserve (eseenetially stealing from everyon else), and my suspicion based on other obviosuly bad stuff the people who push this narrative also push . .................................but what feels bad in nature makes us avoid it for the sake of maximum spreading of out genes because we are deisgned to be liek that by natural genetic selection and whatever gave us all these co-incidentaly nice and sometimes unlikley-to-happen genetics . its because of this that we have natural desires like segsual desire, desire for meat , eggs etc. so similar to hwo burnt food causes cancer and is disgusting to us, inhaleing exhuast fumes of cars might be considerably bad to a extent, although smoking wasnt seen as cancer causing until after heavily processed seed oils, margarine, etc replaced natural fats in cooking ... and that stuff is burning at ur face, while most cars fart probably goes up into space beyond atmosphere, i dont know. it wont let me send much but i think itll let me send one of these : www.emissionsanalytics.com/news/gaining-traction-losing-tread weight is more unsafe in crash , worsens road wear which (to appease emissions people) causes more emissions ,etc tax dollars wasted, raw resources wasted etc. maybe combustion and hydrallics can be used in suspension to get it to move at optimal height and angle to get the structually stronger parts to protect people better, simialr to audio a8, and possibly a fully hydrallic version could also work as luxry suspension for preserving momentum around turns by tightening things, or making things a bit bouncy and super smooth, or activly having both when optimal, lifting car to make it easier for disabled or lazy people to get stuff into and out of car with minimal muscle and joint movement, and for light offroading (lot of people like subaru crosstrk because its small, cheap, but also lifted).
Thanks for another great video. Interesting that you said the hybrid engine would eventually kick in when yiu had it in EV only mode, but it never seemed to kick in until you switched it to Sport to test the top speed.
5:33 I really wonder, what is that SYNC toggle on AC controls? Is it somehow related to "closed circuit" air circulation? I haven't been able to find it in the Prime variant manual.
According to Toyota, they stopped selling the mk4 as only 52x were sold in a year mainly to taxis, where’s the Corolla sold almost 3000, I say it was down to the looks of the refresh , if they aren’t bring the Prius to U.K. or New Zealand, then they should offer the 13kwh pack in the Corolla
Never thought the day would come where I'd love to own a Prius. With around 60 km EV range this would be enough for me to put fuel in it no more than 3 times a year. I barely travel 45km a day so it'll be EV mode most of the time, and maybe even forced to avoid EV mode before the petrol goes stale.
Great video review Thomas. I must say, I've always hated the Prius and what they stood for but now this new model has completely changed my opinion! Great looking, sleek design; and with the sunny weather we've had, I could get a few full recharges each week. This is now on my wish list 👍
Regardless of make and model, that beeping of the speed"limiter" (12:29) would be the first thing that I turn off (permanently if I can). Mercedes using a hotkey for this is a really good idea. One more button to press right after the "start/stop off" button. ☺ "Hey car! Don't be smarter than you need to be." (Also, to damn the "emissions & Euro7". Talk about MY carbon/ eco-footprint [pollution level] AFTER private jet flights for the rich are banned.)
@@autogefuehl Yes, I was not up to the final part when writing the comment but rather at the interior overview. Nevertheless Peugeout steering wheel is smaller and is cut straight at the top and bottom part. Not sure how Toyota steering wheel which is bigger does not cover the dashboard. Are the instrument that much higher positioned?
The old Prius was exceptionally well packaged; 0.24 drag coefficient, good headroom, huge cargo space. Even as the styling improves enormously, the new design takes steps back in all three of those respects. If they'd have simply adopted a couple of cues from the old Prius and the Tesla Model Y for the roofline -- in other words, more height over the driver and front passenger -- they'd have maintained that drag coefficient and the headroom of the previous model. Also, dual zone climate control on the Euro model but not in the US. Why?
But then it wouldn't be a Prius. It's about keeping the overall design in proportion if you still want it to look like a Prius but not the old one. In ok with the compromises the rear headroom is not really a problem unless you're taller than 6'-2". I've had a 2004 Prius for 19 years and I might have had a handful of people who were 6'-2" or taller. Oh, and though there is less headroom, there is actually more space overall when it comes to seat and leg room at least compared to my 2nd gen Prius. The bigger issue is the reduced cargo space, but only compared to the previous regular hybrid version. Because when you compare it to the previous Prime versions, the new one actually has more space.
@@mrxman581 The problem remains; the lower roofline over the front seats is purely for looks and actually slightly impairs aerodynamics and fuel economy; you want the roofline to peak over the front seats. The big improvement in the battery packaging on the new Prime is of course welcome, but while there's definitely more space than on a 2nd generation it doesn't stack up quite so well compared to the 3rd or 4th, even though it is longer. And why all the styrofoam where there should be cargo capacity and why such a narrow tailgate? It just seems to me that while the bones of the new model are really, really good, they got stuff they had control over kind of needlessly wrong.
@@dblissmn I understand what you mean, but I like the decision they made to have a sexy sporty hybrid/plug-in hybrid that's relatively affordable. When the 2nd gen came out, it was one of a kind and remained the workhorse of hybrids for many years. In the interim many other cars have come to market that now do much of the same. Toyota needed to change the direction of the Prius line. In fact, many in the industry though Toyota was planning to phase out the Prius now that its entire line up have hybrid versions. The Prius has done it's job over 20+ years and it was time to move. Many thought that if the Prius would continue it would be as a pure EV. That could still happen which would be cool.
The prius might have been the biggest glow up in recent car history, 99% of the world always mocked how the first gens looked ugly, now its legit a beautiful car pragmatic but aesthetic at the same time. All that a person needs tbh
Looks nice but I am not sure why some manufacturers place the instrument cluster at such a weird angle. Looks like you have to peek over the steering wheel.
This is without doubt the best looking Prius from a design pov. Fluid lines much more sportier. Great tech and Toyota have been in the hybrid game forever. Toyota’s are built to last and taxi companies will be ordering like crazy. Great review Thomas. 👍🏻

This is my dream car…..and I’ve had some amazing cars! We recently had our tyres slashed and let down on our SUV. This is the way….again 😊
Great review, your attention to the details is very impressive.
07:04 "That's what I said" 😂
😁
😂😂
Thomas 👍👍👍
Prius🤙
😀
cheers m8 !
Love the color
looks so good is crazy
Great video review Thomas. I must say, I've always hated the Prius and what they stood for but now this new model has completely changed my opinion! Great looking, sleek design; and with the sunny weather we've had, I could get a few full recharges each week. This is now on my wish list 👍
cheers m8! Keep tuning in :)
Good job 👏🏼…. Thomas. From Japan 🇯🇵
Best greetings 🖖
Looks striking. Amazed that Toyota UK are not selling this. Not everyone wants an SUV....
When will this come to the uk
Sadly not
Regardless of make and model, that beeping of the speed"limiter" (12:29) would be the first thing that I turn off (permanently if I can).
Funny how no one complains here on the instruments above the steering wheel, but when Peugeout does it everyone goes crazy
And why I exactly talked about a couple of minutes in the driving part plus in the interior part!
I think yes thats the difference
@@autogefuehl Fair enough
Wow Okay that is a pretty looking car TBH I like the new look
The old Prius was exceptionally well packaged; 0.24 drag coefficient, good headroom, huge cargo space. Even as the styling improves enormously, the new design takes steps back in all three of those respects. If they'd have simply adopted a couple of cues from the old Prius and the Tesla Model Y for the roofline -- in other words, more height over the driver and front passenger -- they'd have maintained that drag coefficient and the headroom of the previous model. Also, dual zone climate control on the Euro model but not in the US. Why?
Will keep my 2020 prime a little longer, don't like my head brushing the roof, and I also like to see the speedometer.....
That could still happen which would be cool.
prIus finally sexy! will Toyota release an all EV version would be cool
The prius might have been the biggest glow up in recent car history, 99% of the world always mocked how the first gens looked ugly, now its legit a beautiful car
pragmatic but aesthetic at the same time. All that a person needs tbh
I'm drawn to the houses on the road lol they have such a vibe!!!!!!!!
Absolutely beautiful design!
Spacecraft look , galaxy flying.
Hopefully we get the bz compact crossover in the U.K.
We already get the bz4x here in the UK, I’m pretty sure!
New Chr is coming to UK so it's good news
Pffhhhh,, what a beautiful car,, 💖🥰💖
It looks fantastic, it really looks like a futuristic concept car.
I agree
Beautiful! Ö
That solar panel ..... will be a real PLUS for clients in southern Europe
Looks nice but I am not sure why some manufacturers place the instrument cluster at such a weird angle. Looks like you have to peek over the steering wheel.
Best looking car I've seen in a long while. Shame it costs that much to buy.
Wonderful car …and good looks comes at no extra charge
Beautiful car!
I wonder why the 2023 Prius is not selling very well?
Dashboard from the
Nineties 😂😂😂🤟
Great review nice car but sadly not coming to the UK what a pity.
👍
Can you turn both seat heating and cooling on at the same time?
Very good question , I will test that next time
Der schönste Prius den es je gab.
It's like a toddler crying grabbing onto anything as you try to pull them towards becoming full electric
Not really. Hybrids are a superior solution to full Electric.
. electric is kinda a scam
Beautiful ✅
This just seems very inspired by Opel Ampera to me,in a good way obviously
This is without doubt the best looking Prius from a design pov. Fluid lines much more sportier. Great tech and Toyota have been in the hybrid game forever. Toyota’s are built to last and taxi companies will be ordering like crazy. Great review Thomas. 👍🏻
thanks m8 !
Love that yellow. Every one I've seen in California is grey or white
yay leatherette for dust mite allergy bros. great looking car. :D
Je la trouve très belle cette Prius !
