A lot of people have talked about the “O, swear not by the moon” line from Romeo and Juliet but I haven’t really seen anyone explain it soooo....
This line is spoken by Juliet after Romeo swears by the moon to always love her. She interrupts him and says the line “O, swear not by the moon, the inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circled orb, lest that thy love prove likewise variable.” What she’s basically saying is “Don’t swear your love for me by the moon because the moon is constantly changing and I want you to always love me reliably,” which refers to the way that the moon is constantly waxing and waning.
The music video itself also has multiple Romeo and Juliet references.
Firstly, Jinyoung in the white bedroom. As he looks out the window, a white bird flys out. This is referencing the scene in which Romeo says his farewell to Juliet before he has to leave for Mantua. (He’s leaving since he killed one of the Capulets and is now banished.) The two lovers sit in their bedroom and argue if the bird they heard chirping outside was a nightingale or a lark. Nightingales are nocturnal, so Juliet says it’s a nightingale to try and convince Romeo that it’s still nighttime and he doesn’t have to leave yet. Romeo says it’s a lark, a bird that sings in the morning, meaning that the night has passed and he has to leave for Mantua. If he doesn’t leave, he’ll be killed, so the lark can also symbolize a forewarning of danger.
Jinyoung turns to see the bird flying out the window, perhaps signifying that his time is up or that sad sort of “I have to leave now” feeling. Like I said before, it could also symbolize that he’s in danger.
I didn’t see much from Bambam’s laser scene, but the light does seem to shine around his finger, creating a ring, perhaps symbolizing Romeo and Juliet’s secret marriage.
Jackson’s scene is by far my favorite, the visual is absolutely stunning. The two sides that seem to be grabbing or leering at one another symbolize Romeo and Juliet’s families (the Montague’s and Capulet’s respectively) fighting with one another. Jackson sits in the middle of it all with a crown on his head. This symbolizes the Prince in the story, trying to keep his city under control in the midst of the two families constantly being at each other’s throats. At the end of the story, he actually blames himself for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths, saying that if he punished the two families from the beginning, he might have been able to get the families to be at peace with each other.
I find it fitting Jackson is in this scene since apparently his last name, Wang, means king in Korean.
Next, Jaebum walks into a room with a vial on a table. I assume that this is a vial of poison, which was what Romeo drank to kill himself.
Yugyeom is standing in what looks like a hedge maze. I assume this symbolizes the orchard, the place where Romeo first proclaims his love to Juliet. This is also the place where Juliet’s iconic “Romeo o Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo” scene takes place. This line is actually heavily misinterpreted. “Wherefore” doesn’t actually mean “where” but rather, “why.” She’s asking why Romeo has to be Romeo, seeing as he’s a Montague. She’s basically asking why the person she loves has to come from the rival family. You’ll also see the same bird(s) that flew out of the window in Jinyoung’s scene. The first time is very brief, it flys by Yugyeom very quickly. The second time, many of them swarm past Yugyeom, perhaps symbolizing that he’s in great danger, even greater than before since there are several more birds.
Mark’s scene was a bit of a tough one to analyze. The first few shots, he’s just in an empty white room. But, for a few seconds, he’s in a different room, and if you look close enough he seems to be holding some sort of scarf or cloak in his hand. This isn’t actually a reference to Romeo and Juliet, it’s a reference to the story that inspired R&J.
The story is called Pyramus and Thisbe, and it’s quite similar to R&J. There are two lovers who can’t be together because their families forbid it, and through some unfortunate events and wrong assumptions, they both end up committing suicide. The way that it happens is they both agree to sneak out in the middle of the night so they can meet up and run away together. Thisbe arrives first, but a lioness attacks her and rips her cloak. Thisbe gets away safely, but her torn cloak is left on the ground and covered in blood (the lioness had just hunted so it had some blood still on its mouth). When Pyramus arrives, he finds the cloak torn and bloodied and assumes that Thisbe is dead. He stabs himself with his sword and dies. Thisbe comes back and finds Pyramus dead, and with her lover gone, she sees no reason to live and also commits suicide.
Mark holding the cloak references Pyramus finding Thisbe’s cloak. What’s interesting is that the author of the story says that “Pyramus never doubted that he knew all,” suggesting that Pyramus was blinded by his ego and love for Thisbe, clouding his better judgement and leading him to make assumptions that cost him his life. So, Mark’s scene could perhaps symbolize being so blinded by love that it makes you irrational.
Youngjae’s scene is filled with many white coffins, and for a brief second we see him laying on one. After finding out Romeo has been banished, Juliet’s parents try to marry her off, not knowing that she’s already been secretly married to Romeo. So, Juliet goes to the Friar for help, and the Friar gives her a potion that will make her fall asleep with the appearance of death. He tells her that she’ll fake her death and be buried in the Capulet tomb, and from there, he’ll tell Romeo about the plan and Romeo will take Juliet to Mantua with him once she wakes up. Youngjae lying on the coffin symbolizes Juliet lying in the tomb. However, when he sits up, the room is still empty and dark. Due to some issues with communication, Romeo never learns about the plan and assumes Juliet to be dead. He visits the tomb and kills himself just before Juliet wakes up. Youngjae waking up to the same dark empty room full of coffins symbolizes how Juliet wakes up; in a dark place surrounded by dead people, including her lover.
For a brief moment, we see all of them staring up at the balcony. The balcony is empty, no one is there to be “Juliet.” I’ll talk about this scene again later.
The last important scene to discuss is Yugyeom releasing the lark. The room is full of masked figures, a moon in the center. Yugyeom releases the lark and lets it fly straight towards the figures and the moon. The figures most likely represent all of the people that made choices contributing to Romeo and Juliet’s deaths. The moon in the center is the very thing Juliet asked Romeo not to swear by. But, Yugyeom releases the lark and lets it fly to the moon. The lark represents danger, and the moon a fickle and unstable love. Yugyeom releasing the lark symbolizes that he’s accepted his fate, the danger and toxic love both.
Now, “toxic love” might be confusing since Romeo and Juliet are often viewed as the ideal faithful and loyal lovers. However, a lot of what Shakespeare writes suggests that they were obsessed with each other and that they only fell in love over looks. This is especially hard to deny when you consider that the events of the story all happen over the course of three days.
So what does all of this mean? Well, I believe that the MV is about an obsessive one-sided love. Remember when the scene with the empty balcony? There’s no Juliet standing there, or any Juliet at all throughout the music video. The person they’re in love with won’t be their faithful Juliet. They won’t be able to reciprocate the same unconditional love. The lyrics say “I’m ready to die with you,” showing just how far this obsession goes. Yugyeom releasing the lark not only represents them accepting their fate, it also represents them being consumed by the toxic love. Their better judgement has been shrouded by what they think is love, so they submit themselves to it and let themselves become pawns. Their obsession gives them hope and they want the love to last, saying “Swear not by the moon,” but in the end, there’s still no happy ending.
I know this is a really long analysis, but I absolutely love how they used so many elements of Romeo and Juliet’s story. The best art can be interpreted in different ways though, so this is just what I think the music video conveys. Please feel free to reply, it took me a while to type this out lol

this song and MV was inspired by Romeo & Juliet. their theatrical Teaser had narrated line from it as well. the 2 sides during the King Jackson part were the Montague and Capulet feuding. i assume that the Coffins where the robed side were gathered around was Juliets coffin and GOT7 represents Romeo with the poison bottle.
i would have to say this is my favorite comeback because the imaginary was so well done! and the song is just so so so good. their choreography is on point and their style is perfect. Jackson and Bambam singing and mark having more lines makes it great!

Fun fact: Youngjae's high note in the last chorus was supposedly lower in pitch but he made it higher because he is "more comfortable" with it. He belts this high note live after that streneous dance choreography. His stability and voice control never cease to amaze me.

They're actually "playing" Romeo and Juliet on stage in the tent (hence the balcony as a prop + the tent at the beginning) and once they're done with their performance they leave in the wagon (with the horses).

i think in terms of album content, styling, wins, promotions, charting, etc., Lullaby stood as the greatest GOT7 concept/comeback. BUT! 'Spinning Top' saw GOT7 reach a new level of god tier musicality. i honestly believe 'You Are' crawled, so 'Look' could walk, so 'Lullaby' could run, so 'Eclipse' could fly, so 'You Calling My Name' could soar. they have just become such an incredibly cohesive group when it comes to their albums, and because of this their discography is one of the best of all time. IM TERRIFIED to listen to "DYE" because i keep telling myself "nah they cant top this". im waiting to be clowned...

this is actually inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and ahgases think that the start where there is a huge tent/circus is bc they’re actually in a theatrical play. the boys are playing the story all throughout the video, and in the end where they’re riding horse carriage (or smth) is the where they ended their play. some said that it is also based on Shakespeare’s phrase/sentence: “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.”

Oof I'm a sucker for Shakespeare references and this is officially the song that is sending me down the Got7 spiral. What's the Got7 version of "slip into the diamond life" cuz here I go... The imagery in this video and choreo, the way they took one of Juliet's sharpest lines and made a whole concept that evokes the pain of inconstancy and betrayal and the desire to cling to evanescent things like love or even life. I'm also a sucker for moon imagery, and using the phases of the moon to represent mutability, the full moon as a symbol of madness, but also the moon itself as an image of purity GOD the possibilities are endless I just love this video so much and I can't wait to see the full choreo and live stages!
Got7's version would be Welcome to the bird nest cause you know ahgase=baby bird and birds live in nest. Happy you like the song, though you must know their best songs are their b sides, you should check the b sides in whatever album you choose to listen. Besides this album i recommend Spinning Top and 7 for 7 all songs produced by the members themselves.

If you have a thing for metaphors, I would also highly suggest the Flight Log Trilogy (Departure-Turbulence-Arrival) -it's a narrative inspired by the concept of losing your friends/loved ones to a tragic accident and having to find a reason to live on. There's a video on TH-cam that ties all of the details together nicely, but I would suggest watching it on your own first so that you can have your own interpretation. The order of the MV releases go: Fly, Hard Carry, and Never Ever (teasers are chock full of symbolism, so I wouldn't skip them). Their main theme is fire and water, harking back to the symbolism of rebirth, second chances, and rising from the ashes. Because our fandom is known as baby birds (and phoenixes), they also weave in bird imagery. With that said, we welcome you to our Nest with open wings!

Eclipse was my favorite comeback but wow Not by the Moon is perhaps their best comeback to date. I watched it three times in a row when I first saw it. I was just as dumbfounded by this song as I was when PD reacted to LOONA's So What 😂

You Calling My Name has definitely been my favorite comeback and album from Got7, but DYE is fighting for that spot. Not By The Moon is so incredible, and the entire album kills me (I can't wait until you react to Poison)

”You are” was in my opinion their best comeback when it comes to concept and music. You are is my favorite title track and Teenager, Face, To me and Moon U are some of my absolute favorite b-sides. The concept of them writing all the songs and performing in normal clothes and just having fun. 7for7 was the album that made me a fan and I’m a little sad that The era is a bit underrated

Jackson literally killed me with his vocal lines and his raspy voice. He definitely got the Best part and the best set. A king. Just right where he belongs in that throne omg Jackson honestly deserved more vocal parts in other songs cause he's a good singer too but since Got7 have like 4 great vocalists so...
the thing i love the most about got7's music is their ability to create more than just a song. i like to say to people that their music is atmospheric in regards to song progression and emotional exploration. literally take any song, put your headphones on, and just listen. my favourite song, "The End", is one of the best examples, imo. the chorus progression is just insane (honestly, just listen to the depth and wholeness and tell me i'm wrong), the lyrics are beautifully and depressingly real, and it's all wrapped up in this feeling of uncertainty, nostalgia, and inevitability.
just think got7 get slept on so much. they have a reputation for being the crackhead group (which they totally are, and we love them for it). but they also possess incredible artistry that quite often gets swept under the rug.

'The King that we deserve' I couldn't say that better, my god...
I was eating my dinner while watching this and I almost choked up lmao during those "why am i hearing my voice".
This is such an amazing Got7 comeback! I really liked the symbolism in all their solo scenes, like Mark's scene where he is holding a dress (I'm assuming of his absent lover) and he is surrounded by silhouettes of women but he is focused just on his "lover" in his arms and no one else.
-Jackson i think represents Romeo and Juliet walking away from the fights between their families and taking their own paths towards each other.
-JB has the poison that Juliet drinks but I think he is switching it out because he doesn't want his lover to die.
-Jinyoung is the iconic balcony scene where Juliet tells Romeo to "swear not by the moon" and I think the dove flying out the window in the beginning represents the spreading of their message of "not by the moon.
-Youngjae is lying on what kind of looks like a cooling board for a dead body but he sits up and I think that represents that love isn't over.
-BamBam's scene I'm not sure of but I think he is almost in a cage of lights and he is content because he is used to seeing the lights around him. But then other lights shine down and they aren't straight down or organized. To me this represents the chaos that occurs when Romeo and Juliet decide to go to each other.
-Yugyeom's scene is like a classic romance garden scene, but he is alone and there is a storm. I think the storm also represents the "dark" vibe PD was talking about. I think the storm also represent the absence of someone he is waiting for and the inner turmoil one would experience because they are worried something happened to the person they are waiting for.

-The statue in the museum where they are dancing is behind Jackson's throne scene
-The dove flying into the moon and shattering it when the cloaked people are standing around the coffin I think symbolizes their message of their love following through to change the fate of the lovers. The moon explodes and then when they are dancing in that same area the background is falling apart because that is no longer going to be a reality, no one is going to die if they can prevent it.
- I think they all white outfits represent the purity of their love when everything else around them seems grim or dark

I forgot to mention I think they opening and closing scenes are just showing them on the road performing show to show. In this case they are doing Romeo and Juliet and they are separated from other (they are alone with just Got7) and I think that also goes with the message that they will return.

Runaway and Page are actually my favorites so I agree with u. Personally as a title track my fav is YCMN but then I think DYE (this mini album) is way better than YCMN one. So yeah, they are balanced haha. Got7 kings of versatile.

this album is on another level. i wasn't the biggest fan of Call My Name album. i mean, i liked the songs but compare to the end, believe, time out, page, call my name wasn't my cup of tea really, and i didn't know how to feel about this comeback. i was pretty afraid about listening to the album, so i started with Poison, and wow the album has been on repeat since it came out. Perfection is the word for this piece of art.

So my favorite comeback will forever be “Fly” because that whole era and album just hit different when it came out but then when “Spinning Top” came out I was so shook like that entire album was a masterpiece!!
However, in terms of their best comeback I feel that this one tops “You Calling My Name” just because I feel like now that have properly matured into the fine ass men that they are and they’re showcased how fine they fucking are, this one just showcases pure talent and creativity. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve know for a very VERY long time that GOT7 has been this talented and creative but I think now people are finally starting to see it and I’m so proud of them. The fact that my bias Mark has more lines in this comeback also put it higher in the ranks because finally my baby is no longer being slept on. Overall in terms of line distribution, the MV, the concept, the song itself, the FUCKING CHOREO (DONT even get me started) this comeback is simply superior. And they all look just beautiful, the way they should be.
