Once a monk said to his elder: ''I feel that I am dead to the world''
His elder calmly looked at him and said: ''If you are dead to the world, take off all of your clothes, go naked to the city and stay there, walking naked amongst the people''
The monk the replied in shock: ''But without clothes the other people will see me naked, will make example of me and mock at me''
And the elder finished: ''Dead people don't need clothes nor care for the mocking of others''

I'm Greek orthodox. I was watching a documentary about the most "hardcore' orthodox monks in Mount Athos, that live with no electricity, with very little food / water etc. One of them was being interviewed, and he said that when he was living in society, he used to love to listen to Ozzy, Scorpions, Iron Maiden etc, and he was playing guitar on a band as a teenager

I always had a feeling that metal is the style of contemporary music that carries the spiritual in itself the most. Even genres that define themselves against Christianity, like black metal, ultimately rebel against that which has become rotten in the institutionalised forms of that tradition: the corruption, the all-show no-substance pharisee mentality, the vacuous mall-Christendom with no real spiritual content. To notice and stand against that indicates that you have an orientation towards the spiritual, but haven't found your path yet.

I went to my friend's Orthodox church with her and told the father after service "Black Sabbath is why I'm here". He was pretty confused and amused and asked me if he could quote me on that. I was pretty serious, so I said yeah and told him to listen to After Forever when he had the time. Despite listening to Sleep and OM a ton, I had no clue that this was even a thing. The longer I live and look at what's going on around me, the more I want to abandon modern society just and focus on what's important in life. I don't think I can buy into the books 100%, but I can tell you that for me, the teachings and lessons I got from that Orthodox church has definitely been wayyy more beneficial to my well being than the alternatives. Thank you for enlightening me on this. And I must also give thanks to the TH-cam botnet for summoning me this video. Love will overcome, brother.

As hardcore atheist I still respected people with different faiths, as I believed this to be the right thing in a world that splits groups wherever possible.
Metal was a strong uniting force opposed to what was going on mainstream.
Today I'm on my way to orthodoxy. I came from a different route through symbolism, but its heartwarming to see the metal folks again.

I have a funny story. For a while I worked as a cleaner in a retirement home for priests. It was kind of commedical to work there as a metalhead but one day I overheard one priest listening to Naziha Azzouz & Adel Salameh - Risalla and figured that maybe, just maybe, the man would be interested in Om too. So I burned a CD for him (Advaitic Songs) to see if he were perhaps open for it. Now, what I did not think of, was that this man obviously was a lot older than me and his ears had not been what they had been. So when he played the cd, he put it on full volume, shaking the entire appartement and him turning it off after a while.
He wasnt so much moved by the form of Christianity in it however. Perhaps because of his priesthood (he was a Franciscan priest), but more likely because me not being able to explain what this project was about. I hope however, that without me, he might have given it another chance.

Bones and skulls of deceassed monks are kept as a respect for the deceased monks. The monks that are alive are usually not scared about handling a skull, which is not something usual, often times this would only by done when relocating them for some reason. But sometimes a monk will want to watch a skull to remember that he too is mortal - for a monk, remembering death is part of his fight, a way to remember him there is a judgment day so he must keep going his spiritual efforts. As for the text, a monk has nothing to do with rebellion in the social sense, he used this word as a sense of distancing himself from the world itself. Speaking of monks, a christian monk's path is about humility. Look up the book written by Saint Silouan from Athos.

Great video. Being religious myself and a metalhead (not Christian, I'm Muslim) it very much seemed to me that "metal = satanic" is a stereotype. Metal is an expression of all sorts of emotions, all sorts of thoughts and beliefs. You have bands that are deeply left wing (Agathocles, Napalm Death, Terrorizer) and bands that are deeply right wing (Absurd, Graveland, Grand Belial's Key). There are bands that sing praises to God, and bands that blaspheme Him.

As I got older I started to lose interest in metal's constant flirtation with satanic ideals and imagery and started to see it for what it really is; it's not just that it's evil, it's a fake and gay controlled opposition to what people perceived as a Christian hegemony in the western world, despite that hegemony having already been terribly deteriorated even by that point. It's not cool to be running around with zero inhibitions allowing your passions to drag you from one mindless hedonistic pleasure to the next. When you're preoccupied with fulfilling every base desire that pops into your mind the showrunners don't even have to use any kind of hard power against you to keep you obedient because you're already a slave to your vices. There is nothing in this world more difficult, dark and BRUTAL than facing the reality of what really controls this world and denying your passions in pursuit of physical, mental and spiritual perfection, a standard that no man in this world save One has ever reached and can never truly reach.

Interesting stuff. I would caution however (as I would caution Catholics and any other Christians) that it is actually incorrect demonizing or equating the natural world with evil. "The world" consists of evil, but it also consists of good. A monk or a priest has a different vocation, and their relationship with the world will inherently be different. A lay person should not be avoiding engagement with the physical world, however.

But I think the danger for most people who'd do this purely from their own volition, is to likely become easy prey to delusions of grandeur before experiencing any struggles relating to body or other sense based discomfort, as a result of raw living, while also worshiping the Lord. Perhaps 9/10 times people will fail, because of that "first" hurdle/easiest trap. You need a level head and calm, all of the time.
