Isn't that still in the TV version of the movie? I think it is. They just didn't put credits over it. The idea was to stretch the movie out for TV in order to make more cash.
I actually like this version of the theme song. And by shortening the version by eliminating the love part only further distanced Margot Kidder’s role being reduced to just a few lines (in the very beginning & end of the film) since Lana Lang was Clark’s main love interest. But as for the theme itself, I love it ever since I recorded it on ABC with my VHS tape.

Think I only saw this title sequence once - it was always the dopey slapstick version rest of time. Remember they showed a slightly extended version in 90s which includes Evil Superman 'romancing' Lorelei in the next room to Vera Webster, you just hear her giggling through Vera's wall.
I wish Warner would release this extended TV version on DVD. I owned it on VHS and grew up with it. Not just the superior opening credits, but so many good relevant scenes were also included in that.
Never say never! The fact that Warner Bros released the TV version of Superman The Movie in high definition blu-ray last year was an absolute shocker. The one advantage WB had was they discovered a previously unknown print of the TV cut in their storage facility. Who knows if they’ve got a corresponding print for the TV edits of II and III ??? One can only hope.
Peter P21 also when superman 4 was first shown it was in its full uncut format but was trimmed down so this copy must still exist in the vaults so 2/3 and 4 could all get this treatment in time we can all hope

Ken Thorne's score is highly underrated, weird that it lends itself to more listening than the original. The original is the best but Thorne's changes are unique and quite good.
@@blazed420dayz3 people are just conditioned to hate what comes after. Thorne did amazing work with John's original score. It is a treat to listen to all the soundtracks and see the differences. Thorne is not given enough credit because the audio was not promoted the same as when Donner was involved.
I have a beautiful TV rip of 'S III' with these titles and the extra tv version stuff recorded from UK ITV in 1990, with commercial breaks. It's 720x540 resolution, mono sound, but excellent quality. I vividly remember seeing it in the cinema as a four year old (was terrified by the robot woman for weeks) but its the TV version I remember most.
I never saw it like this. When I first saw superman 3 as a kid I felt something was missing.. to this Day the theater version of Superman 2 has the best version of the theme.

Among the remaining Donner scenes included all of Gene Hackman’s scenes as Lex Luthor, as well as a few scenes that were either too good or too expensive to reshoot.
If Donner had been able to completely finish “Superman II,” he probably would’ve served as a co-producer while screenwriter Tom Mankiewicz helmed directorial duty on “Superman III.” At least that’s the way Donner pictured it when looking back on it.
With “Superman IV,” it depends on whether the original camera negatives still exist. I have no idea about whether Warner Bros were able to find them or not.

Because Lester did not have good intentions on how to make a decent Superman movie. It did well with ‘S II,’ but Donner & creative consultant Tom Mankiewicz were the ones who deserve most credit for ‘S II’s success. Tom Mankiewicz did rewrites and eliminated a lot of the campy, slapstick crap originally written for the first two. A lot of this silly crap showed up in ‘S III.’ Chris Reeve said Richard Lester was always looking for the next gag. Had Donner & Mankiewicz remained involved with the franchise, ‘S III’ would’ve been a different film. Mankiewicz left when Donner was fired. Chris helped write ‘S IV’ as you know & even wanted Mankiewicz involved with it as well, but he told Chris that Superman should not get involved with world politics(nuclear arms race).

The hotel at Niagara Falls, Paris, the magic kiss, and then a couple parts of the battle in the city and in the fortress were reshot Lester. If you watch the Fortress battle, there are noticeable differences from when the set was moved to the other studio in between 1 and 2. This is how you can tell what was filmed by Donner and what was filmed by Lester. Also, the Donner Cut of Superman 2 shows that the crystal chamber doesn’t change his clothes which was something that didn’t make sense with the Lester Cut for the ending of the fortress battle.

Superman 3 isn't actually a bad film I think the only problem with it is the amount of comedy that was in it which needed to be toned down a bit. And I also thinj that either Brainiac or Bizarro should've been used as the primary antagonists and get rid of the supercomputer arc and the three other villans. But leave Gus in it and make him smarter and team up with Lex to create Bizzaro to make Superman look evil.

I remember that WPIX 11 played the two different cuts of Superman 3 in the mid 90’s. One was a cut that was shorter than the theatrical cut but had some extra scenes and the other was the full ABC extended cut. I had the former until I taped over it (after buying the VHS) but was only able to watch the latter at the time... 😔😔😔

I don't think it is a good idea to mess with the opening titles for this movie. The point of the original was to set the tone of comedy! Out of curiosity, where does the movie begin in this version?
It begins with the space credits as shown here, then goes straight into the Employment Office prologue of the original movie, which then segues into the Metropolis slapstick opening but with the onscreen credits removed.
These titles were included by the Salkinds to stretch out the run time of the film for TV. When the Salkinds sold the broadcast rights to the first three "Superman" movies to ABC, their contract stipulated that they'd get paid per minute instead of a flat fee. The slapstick opening sequence in the TV version actually contains more silly, stuff that didn't make the theatrical cut for that same reason.
Should of opened like this in theaters, the theatrical version with slapstick sucks ass! Richard Lester fucked it all up! And don't even get me started on Superman 4😡

It's the actual TV version - the opening credits were squashed when broadcast on TV (not cropped/pan-scanned like the rest of the film), so it was possible to stretch it out to 2.4 again :)

It's real. I remember taping this off TV when I was very young and years later when I saw the DVD I was like 'wtf is this?'...haha. TV version also had the scene with Gus in the unemployment office before the downtown scene.
This particular arrangement of the great Williams theme is not too good.... But I do prefer the credits taking place in space. Too bad there's not an alternate opening action set piece too. ;)

These titles are still a bit shit. But compared to.......and what I can only describe as bad 'carry on' movie opening titles, it's a vast improvement. All that needs fixed is for the late Robert Vaughn to be replaced with Gene Hackman, and Richard Pryor replaced with Otis. Don't get me wrong, they were great at what they did in life. But in this movie, they should have not.

One credit that should have been in the opening instead of the ending:

The problem was that he was given an orchestra the size of a high school band.
He’s also a good friend of John Williams. John is who recommended him to take over after John passed on Superman 2. I thought that was really neat.

Things went sour with Kidder & the producers. This movie should not have been made. More Pryor than Superman.

It's real. I remember taping this off TV when I was very young and years later when I saw the DVD I was like 'wtf is this?'...haha. TV version also had the scene with Gus in the unemployment office before the downtown scene.
This particular arrangement of the great Williams theme is not too good.... But I do prefer the credits taking place in space. Too bad there's not an alternate opening action set piece too. ;)

It’s just the TV version. In America it would have played on ABC. No idea if the TV version made its
way to UK television but I would assume so and if so, it’d be the same version as the US.

The TV version was played here in the UK back in the early 90's, as my parents taped it off television at the time.

These titles are still a bit shit. But compared to.......and what I can only describe as bad 'carry on' movie opening titles, it's a vast improvement. All that needs fixed is for the late Robert Vaughn to be replaced with Gene Hackman, and Richard Pryor replaced with Otis. Don't get me wrong, they were great at what they did in life. But in this movie, they should have not.

TheLoon but you managed to get it into its original widescreen aspect ratio. How did you do that? Did you have access to the original footage, or did you stretch it out yourself?
It's just stretched, but the TV version was squashed, so it comes out to the correct ratio when stretched out again :)
