Immigration to Ireland from countries that are not predominantly white is a relatively recent occurrence here. Most of the people of colour in Ireland have not been born here. This wagon is looking for notice is all! If a white man was in Nigerian and his name was Olusegun Abosede the same assumption would be made, and not an eyelid would be batted!

Poor Bray resident Ms. O'Neill has been recently badly harmed by the comedian Tommy Tiernan, in Vicar Street, Dublin, where she left his show.
One can only wish her well with the recovery from this terrible racial insult, and hope, she receives good professional help to regain a sense of nigerian/irish humor.

I was born in Dublin and have lived in London for almost 20 years-since I finished school-which quite straightforwardly makes me an Irish immigrant. Ostensibly I am Irish, but when the inevitable “Where do you come from?” is asked, that answer, rarely, if ever, satisfies people. Race, it would appear, complicates things. - Emma Dabiri ( Irish author, academic, and broadcaster. )

She made some good points, but she's distancing herself from blackness, Africa, Nigeria and shows a yearning to be simply Irish. She has to look inward & resolve this.

It is remarkable that so many people remain offended by the mere suggestion that they themselves might subscribe to these beliefs. If so, ask yourself, what is it that makes you immune to the centuries of socialisation?

Ahh lovely You named your daughter after your father. 🙏🏼 Eddie Murphy & Shaquille O'Neal must have had the same problem.
The term implicit bias was first coined back in 1995 by psychologists Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald, where they argued that social behavior is largely influenced by unconscious associations and judgments.
Since the mid-90s, psychologists have extensively researched implicit biases, revealing that, without even knowing it, we all possess our own implicit biases.

This is brilliant. My daughter is mixed race African/Middle Eastern/ Irish. She is 13. When she was 5 she came crying to me saying that she could never be a princess as no princesses in movies have her color skin. Unfortunately that was only the tip of the iceberg in terms of her feelings too come of lack of social references. ‘Be the change you want to see’ We are all capable of making things change ❤

Well done Emer, excellent talk, laying out clearly the challenges and barriers faced by minoritised people in predominantly white societies is a difficult task in the face of so many triggered individuals taking time out of their day to punch down. The idiotic and triggered responses here and on other media just reinforce all of the things you are pointing out, maybe they will cop on at some point - who knows 🤷‍♀ The best form of defence for their pure stupidity is attack - keep up the really great work, don't let them get you down, you have genuine allies in the community. Predominant white socities? Its called centuries old basic racial demographics! If You can't handle white people then go to the east or africa to feel more comfortable simple as, if whiteness is an issue you have racial issues not the society at large...

11:00 why our media is not diverse. I have written to RTÉ. But the problem is most people doesn't feel its important, that courses on anti-racism are enough. The reality is its surface versus root level. One is about logic the the other is about social construction. That is why is so important that there is a reduction in American and British media dominance and space is given to other continents from where some Irish people's heritage comes from so that we can all celebrate by hearing the various music, business, life experiences of Nigerians, South African, Filipino, Brazilian, Eastern European music. I am not anti-American or Anti-British only that these dominate our media & they don't need to, we need young people and others to be exposed to the wealth and beauty of other countries etc, that's why TV is so important. It's why more people need to ask from broadcasters via our politicians that we want diversity on TV. That includes Roma and Irish traveller TV presenters aswell Well done Emer. Sorry to hear of the negative experiences.

How is the Nigerian government handling their diversity programs for women and minorities? How diverse and inclusive a society is Nigeria? And, the people on the street, the regular folks, not the elites in cabinet, how open minded and welcoming are they? What is life like for non Nigerians in Nigeria? Are Nigerian institutions inclusive? I already am aware of our failures in Eurocentric societies; I want to know about how well are non-Eurocentric societies fairing when it comes to its treatment toward European minorities in their lands. This is a conversation we never seem to have. BTW, prejudism leaches into so many more things than just gender, race and being a minority. I live in a society where although in my country I am in the majority in my province I am not and have gotten sh** on everyday of my life because of my ancestry from people who look just like me; what does one say about that? so far silence.
