    BMW cautions that the oil sight glass measurement should be taken when the engine is still hot after a long ride. If the oil is at the top of the sight glass when the engine is cold, it is likely overfilled as the oil will expand when it gets hot.

    Oil cooler is thermostatic controlled, so if you change the engine oil when cold you will still have half a litre of dirty oil left in the oil cooler, and when you start the bike and reach operating temperature that dirty oil will flow into the engine, result contaminated oil and over filled sump, not good.🫣

I just recently changed out a temp gauge on my 1956-7 60 John Deere and shorted out the volt meter. And now it won't start. It just turns over. Any ideas? Thanks. Jeff

    Just a thought. Really good video folks. One tip though. Putting an empty oil filter on the bike means that there is going to be about 5-10 seconds of no oil pressure during startup. The rattle sounds are pretty clear. To fix that, as long as you have an oil filter
    that is mounted vertically, pour oil into the filter after you lube the o ring. This way, when you start the bike, there will be immediate oil pressure. And that's a good thing.

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Festa Sr. Great tip. Thank you! The old oil that came in the bike made the bike rattle like that every time I'd start it. I have a video tour of the bike as it was when I got it in the works.

    If you're unable to fill the oil filter with oil then yank the plug wires off the plugs,and spin the engine over with the starter for a few seconds to get oil into the filter,and pump before you put the wires back on,and start it...Apparently they want Royal Purple oil in the engine as they went to the trouble to print off a decal,and place it above the oil fill..

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd edwin Credibility from a man with experience is the thought process here. I think I mentioned the factory manual says to use 20w50 at 1:25. I was instructed by a guy who drove one of these 120k miles to "clutch it like a car and run the 0w40 Mobile1 in it." So that's what I do. Another guy who rebuilds these and is factory trained says to use different differential gear oil than factory. I've run into this kind of thing on Chevy front axles, and transfer cases too. Sometimes the factory recommendations are the best they had at the time of printing and someone figures something out that's better. I try to be open minded and go with what is found to be best through my experience and the experience of others. I'm always happy to change practice for any practice that's better than what I'm doing.

      eric barlow I have the complete CD ROM on the 1200 series, but nothing on the owners manual side. I can only guess it's low on brake fluid or the notorious ABS motor is shot. That's common on 2005 and 2004 models I hear.

    • @rhkips
      @rhkips 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      briansmobile1 Yeah, I've not been impressed with Royal Purple's motor oil since they removed their Synerlec additive from the entry-level version.
      But I'm willing to bet it was the "Brian" additive in the Mobil(e)1 that made the difference~ ;D

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rhkips
      Ha ha! I see what you did there! I have absolutely nothing against Royal Purple nor do I know all about Synerlec, (that sticker was from the LVPD maintenance dept) but I do like Mobil1 oil obviously. I really like Valvoline and Lucas as well. The bike starts SO much quieter than before (especially after sitting for a few days) and sounds so much smoother at temp and speed now. Using the 0W40 on a bike (motorrad) is VERY controversial online, but BMW (dry clutch) guys swear by it and I'm beginning to see why. (DON'T use on a wet clutch Japanese bike like a Goldwing!)

    • @rhkips
      @rhkips 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      briansmobile1 Eh, any time anyone uses something other than what's written on the oil cap, the internet loses its mind. Lubrication is an incredibly complex subject, and it's completely unrealistic to expect The General Public to know enough to really make an educated decision. It's a topic I've wanted to make a video on for a while now, but no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to condense it into any less than about 2 hours. XD
      There's been a recent influx of third-party oil additives that function very similarly to Synerlec, which I may choose to do a video on instead. I'm a huge advocate of such additives, and while Lucas makes some good products, they don't hold a candle to some of the stuff that's out there. Until you've seen a 300,000+ mile Ford 4.6L taxi engine dismantled and still have visible crosshatch in the cylinder walls, it's difficult to imagine why any one product might be better than another... ;)

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Oneal I AM that customer! That's one reason I love being a mechanic. lol Seriously though, just explain that if you do that you'll have to interrupt their job in order to take in new ones and it's a flawed concept policy that will take longer on their car in the long run.
      The best practice there is to ask folks when they drop off a car "when do you plan to pick it up" this way you don't hurry for nothing, and you can acquiesce the impatient ones for a expedition fee. HA!
