Maan, the American media sometimes overhype EU players, the dude did nothing but sit on bench in Europe, when he cameback from NBA he couldn't even make it in Euroleague, same thing happened with Darko Milicic, I think it's pretty clear that you need to use lotery picks only for youngsters dominating in Euroleague or any of the top leagues. Luka was always a safe pick, same as Wemby, if ur 18 and dominating against grown ass men that some even played in NBA, I think it's an easy decision.

Luka was MVP and Euroleague champion.
Bender was the worst player on a bad Euroleague team.
Yet in the US they compared the two. even their playing style is not similar.
It is like when it comes to Europeans all logic goes out of the window and every new guy gets the reputation of the last European guy that entered the league.
Imagine picking up 5th some guy from Chicago, just because a year before some other guy from Chicago who has better stats and skills, had a great season.

I'm usually skeptical of the "jack of all trades, master of none" type of prospects. And that's exactly what Bender was. Never excelled at one particular thing, just showed flashes, and that combined with his size made scouts hype him up too much.

  • @AdamKlownzinger

With busts, as well as steals, it’s almost always easy to diagnose with numbers and context.
He was a bench-warmer who played i think less than 7 MPG on a team in Israel of all places, and because he was 7 feet tall and made a 3 pointer in a game before (even though I’m pretty sure his percentages weren’t good), he was a top-5 pick. Thanks to Kristaps, who himself was much more productive on a superior team.

What about a series of “how good they could have been” you probably could come up with a shorter better title but guys like Archie Goodwin, James White, Jonathan Bender could be in that series possibly. It's interesting to compare the final-season stats of the three European stretch guys taken (or about to be taken) in the top-five of NBA drafts since 2015:
    *Wembanyama (France):* 21.7 PTS | 47% FG | 10.5 REB | 3.0 BLK | 2.5 AST | 0.8 STL
    *Porzingis (Spain):* 10.7 PTS | 47% FG | 4.8 REB | 1.0 BLK | 0.9 STL | 0.4 AST
    *Bender (Israel):* 5.5 PTS | 47% FG | 3.0 REB | 0.9 BLK | 0.8 AST | 0.6 STL
There's a clear outlier there. Bender should NOT have gone 4th overall even in a weak draft. Worth noting that he was nearly a year younger than Wembanyama - and two years younger than Porzingis - before coming out and clearly needed that extra time to develop his game before heading to the US.
He averaged a pretty strong 17.2 PTS/53 FG%/6.6 REB/1.1 BLK in 10 Spanish league games at 25-years-old before an ACL tear this season. If it were 20 years ago, when teams were comfortable bringing 'older' guys in from overseas, he might have got another shot in the league if he kept improving his game but with today's youth movement I doubt it unfortunately.

  • @jackbombay1423
    @jackbombay1423 ปีที่แล้ว +9

He has made big numbers in the spanish League this season and he´s 25. I think he´s a very unconsistent player with flashes of that might be... and let´s face, 7 footers who can do everything that he was expected to do (defend mutliple positions, pass and shoots three) are very unlikely to happen every draft. But as GM you don´t want to miss the chance. And for those who keep saying you don´t want to invest your picks on europlayers: Giannis, Jokic and Doncic, salute you.

He was basically his generation's Nikoloz Tskitishvili. Basically people saw Porzingis and any big man with an outside shot was overrated.

Greetings from one coach from Croatia. Believe me,we ALL in bball culture in Cro were so surprised when we saw what draft place he landed. We all knew that after rookie contract he will be out. His coach Nikola Vujičić was Euro League legend, old school center position with no shooting,no passing,no jump shot,no driving to basket, just dunking and laying buckets underneath basket. And he schooled Dragan on his Euro League experience. That cant pass in NBA today.

Okay I’ve finally watched this in full after my comment yesterday. Fantastic video. One thing I’ll say is Dragan even today is still young and I think in both the nfl and nba today there is a level of impatience when it comes to developing super young talent if they aren’t nba ready. I’ll give a few examples that took a while to develop, Jermaine O’Neal (4 years) Steve Nash (4 years), Gerald Wallace (3 years) - I’m not saying give them a decade but sometimes it could take longer and I just think teams aren’t willing to put in that time anymore. Obviously phoenix gave Dragan three years but I think there’s something to “growing up in the system” phoenix had two head coaches in 2/3 years dragan was there. He could never get used to a system unfortunately.

They can do a Jokic pass and the next 5 plays they lose the ball; they can do a Mutombo block but they can get dunked on 3 times; they can hit back2back 3s but miss the next 10. Versatile (unless you average 20/10/7) and super athletic high energy 2 way prospects (Josh Jackson, Stanley Johnson, Winslow, Badley) are always risky

Every team keeps trying to find the next Durant, or some goofy ass reason, "Unicorn". KD is a guard like big that can score in ungodly amount of ways. Porzingis was the "unicorn" but let's be real, he's a KD0.5 and is permanently injured. Dragan Bender is just one of the casualties on the way. Wembanyama looks to be KD2.0 but with a subpar scoring percentage, I doubt it.

He should’ve been a 2 nd round pick at best. ( Yes in ✊🏿) But don’t mean it in a racist way by any means .

every year the nba attempts to hype up a really tall guy that is capable of "doing it all". we see it often. they see a 7 foot guy who does things a 7 footer doesnt do and they get overhyped. victor is the latest overhype guy of that elk. i dont think he's gonna have this amazing career everybody is already projecting him to have. there are far too many examples of a 6'10 or taller guy coming into the league with "guard skills" and they end up quickly becoming a bust or they just become okay. its a gamble and you hope that it translates to NBA competition. i personally wont be surprised to see victor disappoint many at least in the first few years of his career. he needs more weight and we need to see him against actual NBA competition. wouldnt we all just love to create the ideal 7 footer with great ball handling and is a shot creator type of player. thats what the nba looks for every draft. its why you see guys get drafted with similar profiles to that of a victor.
