Saved me a trip to the dealers, thanks! Starting problem on R1100RS (1993). Changed the battery, no improvement. Watched your vid, excellent, no extraneous commentary, no annoying music! Ordered a new starter from ebay Germany, €60, arrived within 4 days. Only problem was the little spigot hole not being fully drilled out. Once done, sorted. Remounted in 15 minutes.
Cured the lazy starter problem and the real bonus, cleared the ABS fault as well. Dodgy starter pulling too much current from the battery, not leaving enough to drive the ABS unit, consequently I've been riding for 4 months without the ABS. Back on the bike with confidence now - confident it will start when I want it too, and stop without locking up when necessary.
Will be looking out for your other vids next time I need to do some maintenance.
Stay safe, best regards from France.

Great reference video. My 1150 rt developted a similar problem so I purchased a new starter and dowl pin from motorworks £210.00 and worth every penny. came back to the video a couple times just to ensure I was on the right track and four hours later plus an extended jump start kit RT back together with a quiet starter. also checked the clutch plate while the starter was off.

Nice video. Not sure if mine is on the way out on my R1200RT but every now and then I press the starter and it turns once, then dies. Sometimes if I hold the button down longer than 2 sec it drains the power until a factory reset happens. Usually only happens once after a short ride if I'm getting petrol or going shopping, so engine is still warm. And if I let go, let the battery recover for a few secs it then starts as normal. Battery shows 12v+ on the dash with engine off

Thanks for the video, it was thanks to it that I was able to do the job on my 2001 RT.
HOWEVER... I had to remove the footrest plate and now are unable to reinstall it as the upper M10 bolt is slightly misalligned with the frame, and I'm scared that I'll damage it if I try to force it in.
Any tips on how to sort this out? - Thanks!

Great video, well shot! I believe that failure of glued magnets is most common problem. This was issue with mine. Newer starters use a clip to hold magnets in place. Parts to replace cost as much as Ebay unit with 1 or warranty. Personally I did ebay

I have a similar issue but when I took the starter off and tested it as you have it does spin right up. Also the battery I used to test it is the bike battery and reads 12.75V. I have a neutral light, kickstand up, key on, and kill switch on but get nothing (including no lights). I hear clicking in the fuse box is about all I get (and neutral dashboard lights on). Any advice? Anybody. Tell me where to go next and I will try it later this evening.

    • @kthschsslr

Clean all your your battery cable connections first.
Then use a jumper wire as demonstrated in the video to trigger the starter.
If the bike cranks, work backwards from there, electrically.

    Good work!
If only the carbon brushes are worn out and the rest is still ok, you can get these as spare parts (for both Valeo and Bosch starters) for a lot less than the whole starter (~10 EUR).
Rebuilding the starter is pretty easy, you will find youtube videos about it. If the coil is burnt, it's probably cheaper and safer to buy a new starter.
I wouldn't put any grease at the contact, it will reduce the conductivity - but that's a bit of personal taste ...
