I was in Chicago at the end of ghetto Cabrini-Green and happened to walk through there by dumb as* accident, not so bad then and remained in Chicago up through the time when it became too decadent and bougie. It became very expensive.
Robert Taylor homes were on the south side and way up there with Cabrini-Green. Odd thing about Cabrini-Green was that, when I got there it was smack down in between 'nice' neighborhoods, but That's Chicago, in a nice place and walk one block, hmmm, not in Kansas anymore.

Going tomorrow night - Clive Barker is my favorite writer/artist - love Candyman - love that Tony Todd, Vanessa Williams and Virginia are in the film - I have trusted Jordan Peele this whole time - he said he kept Clive in the loop and that this was truly a spiritual continuation. I loved that they connected baby Anthony into this story. However, that was it for me. Great acting & directing, but the story lost me. I really didn’t understand the point of adding in another “Candyman” story. I get the social commentary and the anger of unjust killings. Yet, when I watched the original Candyman, I felt his rage was not only about his unjust killing but also the fact that his murder/story was forgotten for some time. It is one thing to cruelly kill me. It is another thing when no one pays for my murder, & then I am easily forgotten because of my killer. Candyman was killed and then discarded, all because he was black. Candyman wanted to be remembered. He wanted his pain to echo off of people telling his story. He wanted to be feared. His strength was in his revenge, in the cruelty of his murder; his strength was within the bee stings and the hook. He fed off of being the ultimate urban legend. I feel like the original Candyman wouldn’t want to share his story with anybody else’s pain. His pain was enough!
I did like that they made Anthony an artist, similar to the original Candyman’s occupation before he was murdered. Nice touch there.
I miss the Sweet to the Sweets graffiti, and the walls within walls feel of the high-rise projects. I understand the low rises are all that’s left, but the high rises were the perfect backdrop of this story. A place full of pain and violence built on Candyman’s ashes/death site, was just perfect!
I miss the storytelling that was so haunting in the original film. Candyman is storytelling within a story. Even though I liked the puppets; nothing beats the conversation with the janitor lady telling the murder of Ruthie Jean, & the young boy telling the story of a young boy’s murder in the bathroom. Real horror from excellent actors! That was missed.
I also understand the hypocrisy of the legend of Candyman. With the social commentary, it can get lost that this is a horror film. Yes, he was unjustly killed by white ppl. Ppl then don’t understand why he kills black ppl and/or kids. However Candyman, like many villains who seek revenge, become consumed by revenge and rage. In this consumption is where they lose their righteousness and ultimately kill victims who are truly innocent. It makes the character/villain right & wrong at the same time. You understand their rage, yet you also understand they are the boogeyman and need to go!
I am disappointed in the film but I can appreciate it at the same time

I said the exact same thing. I loved the visuals and the ways of telling the story in this movie but at the end of the day, the original Candyman seemed kinda tacked on like his pain is to be shared and passed on but that solves nothing. The pain of the others is similar in that they were treated unjustly but why linger as another Candyman when the original established that pain and anger has rage, yes but concentrated rage or retaliation. What point is there to bring others into your fight for revenge when there is no one to fight? I get it the police are the new enemy but it doesn't make sense, movie wise. I understand every point you said and agree absolutely. This movie is not a masterpiece like the original but not to be taken lightly either.

I just saw this about an hr ago and I do have to say I loved the movie and agree with you guys on alot of your points. Visually and story wise, this movie delivers but the overall movie hits a bump with the reason why there has to be another. Candyman is created from fear and has pain and tragedy tied to it but why continue the pain that's been done to you by having it be shared with others? The legacy of Candyman continues but why? Also needed alittle more of the other 2 Candymen as well. I remember just hearing their names and then seeing the end credits deal which kinda cheapens their story but maybe that's all for the sequel which this movie kicks off at the end .Great review, well said and just great vibe overall. That's a sub right there.👌

So, I think this Candyman omits any sequels following the original Candyman.I think it was smart because it is taking the opportunity to build on the lore set up from the original Candyman, I like that they kept it to Cabrini-Green, I just wish they would have taken the time to weave each generations "candyman" into the story better and flesh out the lore more. We need more time with the characters uncovering the lore and seeing the character development through that uncovering.

Hey, guys. Can I suggest a slight format change (since you do spoiler reviews)? I suggest this because I love you both but I'm also scared of spoilers. My suggestion is to say at the very beginning whether you liked the movie or not (just a thumbs up or down from both of you). You do this a every once in awhile, just say something like "I really liked those movie... I did too." Otherwise I do tend to initially avoid watching your videos until after I see the movie (or until after I decide that I'm probably not going to see the movie), but there are also a lot of your videos that I can't watch because I do eventually want to see the movie at some point. What do you think? Cheers!

I'm so glad you asked why WIlliam suddenly became unhinged and wanted Anthony to become CM, because I didn't get it. A few other questions...
Why did Anthony become...possessed I guess, in the church scene?
How was Anthony even seeing "Sherman" instead of Tony Todd as Candyman? Sherman was William's childhood memory.
There was something said about multiple CM's at the end, so is Sherman just one of the CM's but we're still acknowledging Tony Todd as CM since his face was at the end?
I have so many more questions because this movie didn't add up for me, but maybe im comparing it too much to the old story lol.

The social commentary was way too heavy handed, it does a disservice in my opinion, what made the old candy man so good was it was a horror movie first and the social commentary was weaved into the atmosphere, in this movie the social commentary was the plot with hints of a horror movie.

Mmmm it’s relative to how things are today. It’s being very open with a lot of people’s reality and bringing it back to the root of the story being of racism in the first place and express generational hurt + living conditions of minorities that hasn’t changed or healed … what’s happened is the previous movies did the rolls reversed to make it more watchable for the times in my opinion. In my opinion it just wasn’t scary enough compared to the original. It was trying too hard to be “woke” as much as I hate that term. It leaned heavy into the racial aspect of the story too blatantly where as the original did it in a more vague way. Seems these days everything needs to be spelled out for us and thats the problem with some movies today. This nee candyman wasn’t nearly as bloody either. Lots of missed opportunities. The movie ended just as it was getting started. Hopefully they will do a part 2

I mean the biggest thing I could gather is its almost like Emmett Till.. And tales of the hood 2 and American gods where they explain that part of strange fruit and pain and racism.. And scarafice of carrying the burden of just misery and hurt and senselessness. Except in candy man it turns it on its head to use someone to avenge or make this lasting horror of people doing wrong but turns it and aims it at everyone.

A lot of people Saud in first trailer when he's going by window not sure if ut was obvious that it as police car in that one. But they looked at his reflection and said that's tony Todd in the reflection. That's his role in ythis movie they can have his reflection in mirrors or his voice lol they theorized. Funny thing is this is same shot. Just they made it more obvious this us police car and added a lot of bees 🐝lol. Can't wait for this and all the TH-cam videos about this lol

I love that you mentioned Teyonah’s character wearing a headwrap. It irks my soul when I see Black women in movies just going to bed with their head uncovered. I recently watched Spacejam 2, with my little cousins 🙃. I appreciated LeBron putting on a durag as he prepared to go to bed, but then was immediately put-off bc his wife just hopped into bed without a scarf/bonnet, 🤦🏾‍♀️

He might be seeing a parallel between him and Helen. Plus history usually this happens so if ut didn't happen to him then that'd be a first lol. He did get out like the movie lol but he came back he didn't know lol. This reminds me of odeniuous I think that's how you spell it where king and queen have baby. There's a prophecy saying the baby will grow up kill his dad and marry his mom so they see ent the baby away. Decades later the baby grows up found out where he came from so he goes back to see if he can find his parents or people who knew them. Came across someone on road they fought he killed him cause that's what they did back then. Turned out he was the king so he went to the queen to apologize and stuff. They ended up getting married after falling in love. Woman at beginning pops up and says the prophecy gas been fulfilled and clued then on everything. I think the mom killed herself or something and the son stabbed his eyes out. Messed up story. But it reminds me of this alittle bit like the story structure some beats lol. Yuck I seen that in trailer or clip him picking in mirror lol. Yuck lol. Anthony got bit by bee turns into candyman like Peter got bit by spider and became spiderman lol.

Candyman (2021) is such a amazing horror movie of the year. The story, perfomance's, music, images, direction, social commentary, and cinematography was outstanding and incredible. Tony Todd once again did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Candyman as he put tons of emotion and depth into his role just like the original. It definitely and completely reintroduced and revitalized the horror classic. It was decent. I'm absolutely and positively watching it all over again. 😍💯😎👍

  • @NicksFilmCorner

As someone who only just saw all the Candyman movies recently, this one was personally my favorite (though I like the original as well). The visual aesthetic - from the shadow puppets to the mirror sequences - was so well done, and it was really eerie. The acting was great all around, and Nia DaCosta's direction was fantastic. I do think it needed an extra 10 minutes just to flesh out a couple of things, but otherwise I really liked it. Great review!!
