    I loved it. It's hilarious to think about how many people will watch the trailer thinking they're getting a semi-tame cerebral thriller only to realize they've signed up for the pure insanity of the third act. Also, the cinematography is absolutely sunning.

    Great review! Nick really echoed my thoughts completely and I rated it the same. The “subtext is literally the text” pretty much sums up my issues with the film. I feel like Alex sacrificed so much depth and character development in the film in service of the metaphor he’s presenting. At the end of the day my biggest gripe is that it does feel written by a man about women’s trauma. I really love Jessie Buckley but she can only do so much within the confines of this role. For the most part she feels like a stand-in for the role of “traumatized woman” and is just there to serve the metaphor by heap loads and loads more trauma onto throughout the film. She doesn’t feel whole or truly realized, she’s more so symbolic in the way that Rory Kinnear’s many men are symbolic. It does feel very on the nose and obvious to me so it’s interesting people are so confused what the movie is about, but I’m glad it is sparking conversations about these things, I just really would be curious to have seen what a woman director would have done with this film. Props to the cinematographer and sound design for creating a beautiful film and the body horror was very well done too, there’s definitely a lot of pros and cons to be had here.

    I like Alex's movies and am totally obsessed with Jessie Buckley from the minute I first saw her performance in 'Beast' so cannot wait to see this film. It already strikes a chord. The guy who I left my (extremely) abusive husband for, was 14 yrs younger at the time and our relationship was beyond intense but I remember trying to break it off in the beginning and his reaction at the time. Dead calm. Like the eye of a hurricane. When we decided to mutually part ways five years later...will never forget when he casually said "Do you remember that day when you wanted to leave me? Do you know why I showed zero emotion?" - I remember we had been driving on the highway at that time - "Because I decided to floor it and crash my car into a wall. With you sitting next to me". As I stared at him in shock. The realization hit me that you will never (100%) truly know your partner. Even if you spend a lifetime with them and I literally shuddered, while walking away. It is one thing to threaten S...and another to take that person with you. Ps. Apologies for my macabre confession and Thank you both for the recommendation. ❤❤

    What do you think of the Green Man folklore Involved in the movie? A figure representing rebirth often depicted with a face made of leaves

    • @bengrimm_up_all_night
      @bengrimm_up_all_night 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Edwin interesting. I read "The Green Man is typically portrayed as a human face surrounded by dense foliage. Such images appear as far back as the eleventh century, in church carvings. As Christianity spread, the Green Man went into hiding, with stonemasons leaving secret images of his face around cathedrals and churches. He enjoyed a revival during the Victorian era, when he became popular with architects, who used his visage as a decorative aspect in buildings." and that the Green Knight was a form of Green Man legend, which was Def a real Arthurian legend from the 14th century

    I appreciate that you guys understand some of the fear that comes with just being a woman. I've tried explaining it to so many men who just look at me blankly, or try to mansplain why I'm wrong!

    • @velcro-is-a-rip-off
      @velcro-is-a-rip-off 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually tried to reframe how I think of "paranoia" or "fear" in the case of just existing as a woman. I refer to it as "survival instinct" and I'm not sure if this was something we inherited instinctually that maybe we develop it through evolution (there are scientific studies related to the gut feeling of reading someone's bad intentions) or if it's something we develop over time and growing up. But whatever it is, it's like having eyes in the back of our head, which is on a swivel, and the nuance of not making it look like we are as aware of our surroundings as we are (because not looking paranoid is part of the built-in in security mechanism).

    I think I liked it more than you but it was a good review and I like the references you saw in it. For me, it did a great job of evoking the sometimes blinding panic of needing an escape route that isn't always to be had and the often resulting caution-to-the-wind, frustrated anger of 'I can only be terrified for so long before it gives way to the feeling of, sod it then, let's do this', (like when faced with hide and seek, she gives her own countdown and opens the door when she's 'supposed' to run and hide). As to the 'on the nose' metaphor points, I get what you're saying but in all fairness, I don't think Alex was aiming for subtlety.

    I really wish we could get another (longer) vid on this film where Nick expounds on a lot of the ideas he introduces here. I LOVE Alex Garland, but this is definitely his most confounding project to me. I don’t know if anyone else is interested, but I just watched this for a second time with my brother this week (also an Alex Garland fan, his first time seeing this), and we talked in circles about it after, but later I wasn’t able to find any real discussions on TH-cam that I thought were really hitting near the mark. I refuse to believe that AG’s message is simply “Men bad”, but if it’s not, then it’s really hard to decipher what his motivations were, and he hasn’t said much about it himself.
    Maybe enough has been said, and it is what it is, but that’s not the feeling I got the second time I watched it recently.
    Let Joseph see it and make a review: part 2… if ya wanna. I’d watch. 🙃

    As a woman...I hated this movie lol. Idk why, I feel like there's so many reasons why but I can't pinpoint it to just one but this movie made me want to go rewatch the Office just to be able to get the ick off me.
    It could also be because my husband's best friend committed suicide last week and we all wholeheartedly believe that it was his wife's fault because he did the cooking, cleaning, laundry, worked a full time job and every time he was away from her for more than 30 minutes she would call him at least 2-3 times to complain to him about what he was doing wrong or what she needed him to do that she could have just as easily done herself. Women can be assholes too and this one was such a selfish, rude and bully of a person that I think he wanted a divorce but she told him she would take everything from him from his house to his kids and whatever child support she could get. If you're one of these asshole women, do better ladies...

    I watched half of the movie for the first time tonight. Watching the other half tomorrow. I felt sad for Harper but really for all women. I can’t hike by myself because I’m female. I don’t want to even walk in my own neighborhood alone. Men in trucks will slow down as they get close and just stare. I’m thinking, great, is this person trying to kidnap me? Most men, even in 2024, have no clue or even want to understand what women have to worry about.
    Btw. The cinematography in this movie is beautiful. The tunnel scene had me on edge. Tomorrow, when I watch the 2nd half, I don’t want to see any more dead animals. 😣

    I loved the movie. I haven’t seen a ton of old surrealist films but based on a few, it reminded me of that. The subtext = text… the imagery basically being THE MOVIE… if you look at it as a surrealist film, that isn’t a negative, it’s just how it’s supposed to be.

    You guys are the best! After I watched this movie I immediately pulled up your TH-cam post. I love hearing both of your insights. As a woman, I had a similar feeling to perhaps the Get Out experience. It was simultaneously traumatic and cathartic to watch the main character be vigilant and afraid with every encounter, simply because she is female. I recognize every version of men in this film, and I will guess that every woman relates with me on that. It is maddening and infuriating, and I wish I could do a cosmic scream that she did, multiple times. I walk away from this film feeling seen, but it makes me sad that so many people/men will walk away from this film “grossed out” or offended or defensive or dismissive. Life imitating art imitating life. Thank you Nick for the women’s studies books and authors - I am definitely going to check that out. And lastly, I am going to check out this writer more deeply - I am amazed that a male writer cared enough to write this film and amazed that he was able to get it right.

    I have to assume much of it has no purpose. Like all art ( artsy fartsy art ) it’s completely just bending reality and open to interpretation.
    I kept hoping for a vague Alien landed and keeps trying to learn male female roles thing. Makes a bunch of men and then tries to reproduce to fix itself. Maybe it falls in love with a her and then reproduces itself but doesn’t understand how all this human stuff works. So he is making it up as he goes along and just trying different things.

    My take is if not for the title of “Men” and the super on the nose metaphor of the forbidden fruit and the garden of Eden this could have been a pretty good movie about this ladys trauma with her one man who clearly is a terrible misogynistic narcissist. But to paint this as a condemnation of all men turned it into an off base, pretentious disappointment. Which is a real shame because the cinematography and acting were pretty damn good. This is a destructive message that we see all to often these days. Throw in the fact that her choice of men being her terrible husband was never called in to question. Ball dropped from a film maker whos previous movies Ive loved

    I really appreciated this review! Just saw this film last night and was blown away by its message. The symbolism of the woman who is in perpetual danger throughout her existence because religion, societal conventions and all other constraints placed on her, making her vulnerable to the world of men around her. The message is correct that all men are the same and want to be loved, unconditionally, without giving anything in return and the woman is expected to provide this love. Yet, the opening scene with her eating the apple, was a foreboding of things to come, the allegory of Eve and the snake. The fact that even Mother Nature becomes a threat as it's tainted with how it could become dangerous for a woman because men are a part of her world. Brilliant!

    So I think we can all agree that Garland is all about details and the cinematography here by all accounts is gorgeous if not perfect. That's Garland saying to us "there are no accidents here and I will tell you the truth. But you're gonna have to find it." However, from Harper's perspective this is not the case. She is saying "whatever I say is truth". But we definitively know this is not the case. In fact, she lies, I submit, more than once. She lies horribly to Geoffrey about playing the piano. She's actually quite proficient. This technique which Garland uses to great effect has become known as the "unreliable narrator."
    Now in the church we see the stone podium which on one side has the carvings of the 'green man' and on the other side is what is known as a 'Sheela-na-gig'. This is certainly a certain amount of low level blasphemy imo worthy of its own discussion. But it's not unheard of for local people to inculcate their own folk stories into their local Catholic church. But I digress.
    The Sheela-na-gig nobody knows what that really is it's all over the map. However feminists have adopted it as their own because of big va jay jay, and have put new carvings up. What Garland is saying is "no one really knows what a Sheela-na-gig is, so I'll show you one!!" and that's exactly what he proceeds to do and actually what the creature is at the end! A Sheela-na-gig! With a tip to the hat to John Carpenter's The Thing. Where that creature had everybody fooled. Just like the audience for this movie!!
    Now, my hypothesis is that the "truth tellers" in the movie are the men actually telling Harper the truth! Take the first conversation with the vicar. James hit her. Yes, it's a battery usually a misdemeanor, but he's right it's not a *capital offense!* Yes it's wrong and unpleasant but people should not be executed for it! So if the truth tellers are the men and Harper is lying, how much lying is she doing?? Well she lied about the piano, and she lied about being chased out of the woods. The cop is quite literally onto her. And she knows it. It's why after the cop stands next to the tree, all the other "forbidden fruits" fall out of the tree! We see two flashbacks. One where she walks out of the woods, and another later on where she is being chased. It can't be both! Which was it?? The vagrant probably was living in those outbuildings she walks by after climbing out (she wasn't running). This rabbit hole keeps on going! Anyway Garland was kind enough to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to the actual horror this movie wants to tell (but can't lol) and it is scary indeed. Garland did not go 4D with this movie - he went 5D!! Garland also pays homage to "The Shining" in this movie as well imo. Garland has "jigsaw puzzled" his previous works and it's no different here!

    Ex Machina is a 8 5.
    Annihilation is a 6.5.
    Men is a 5. Not a good sign Senor Garland that each of yout movies sucks more. I am not a actor or director so I give you props for making art, but not a fan of Men.

    Worst movie I’ve seen in years. Literally not one scare just a couple of gory scenes. All these people saying it’s horrifying and a great film are smoking crack..... yea there’s underlying messages but the movie is so stupid and boring you won’t care to even bother figure out what those messages are. Trust me don’t waste your money on this trash you’ll just be disappointed

    Preachy, pretentious and idiotic movie. One-sided (never explores toxic female side), no one in A24 Horror films act like a human being (she just watches a guy give birth to other people for 5 minutes and just stands there...doesn't fight or run or do anything) and it was as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face. Boring, plodding and nothing entertaining about this flick.
