For me it was a no-brainer. I bought it recently because it’s such a versatile focal and aperture range. It’s been almost entirely on my camera, even despite its heft. It’s big, it’s heavy but somehow it doesn’t feel like that while I’m using it. Superb offering from Tamron!

As a sports shooter, this lens is very interesting. It's about perfect for basketball shot from the baseline. Usually a 24-70, and 70-200 are used ideally on 2 separate bodies, but this covers the majority of that range.

  • @stevenboesky6692

I have this lens and so far I love it. For the first time in ages I traveled with one lens instead of a backpack full of lenses. That said, if I'm shooting portraits or other specialized photos I prefer my primes, but for generalized photography this lens does it all. I'm shooting mostly using the A1 so if I need more reach I can easily switch to crop mode and get 225mm which negates the need for a 70-200. Also, if I need wider I could always bring my small 20 mm 1.8. Between those two lenses I've got pretty much most of the focal lengths covered except for wildlife. I don't mind the size at all and while pricey, you could replace a whole bunch of lenses with just this one. It is very sharp and the colors are great. Thumbs up on this lens

As a filmmaker, this looks like a great lens. Starting from 35mm in full frame going up to 150mm, with f/2 to f/2.8, sounds like a great range to work with. When I had the GH5, I shot with the 12-60mm f/2.8 on an entire feature film. Not once did I change lenses. Now I'm shooting with full frame Sony cameras, and this Tamron lens looks fantastic. It's definitely pricey at the moment, but, it's going on my B&H wishlist for now.

Man, I think this is an insanely killer lens and ALMOST would replace my Sigma 24-70 & 70-180. I just use the wide end of the 24-70 more than I think and I know I’d regret not having it. If Tamron or Sigma made a 14-24 f/2-2.8 or f/2.8 that can be used with 82mm filters for less than $1200, it might be worth checking out.

Seems like it would be a nice lens to have for event photography especially.
Event photography is hard with just one body, since you feel like you need a 24-70 in some situations and 70-200 in others. But for a lot of events I think this would be perfect and it could save you from having two bodies around your neck all day.
That said recently I'm moving in the other direction and doing primes more.

  • @HomesickMac
    @HomesickMac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This is my first real zoom lens and it's a revelation. The weight is even contributing to the stability when doing video pull-ins & outs, it stabilizes the camera when handheld, but maybe that's just me. The most important part is that this is now a perfect solution for my live music and event photography. I've just got it so I only did a couple of hours of photo shooting, it's just great. Superb AF, smooth zooming ring (yes, a bit stiff but I'm OK) and yepp, the flares are an issue. However, _everything_ else on this lens is just superb. I've never owned a 24-70 or 28-75, no 70-200 so I cannot compare, but I can relate to it by watching my photo bag now. Instead of several other primes, I'm now packing a Tamron and a Sigma 16mm f1.4 (in crop mode aprox 22mm) paired with my trusty A7III, and that's it. Practicing smart framing with the Sigma without the need to crop more in edit, this is such a great combo. The purchase of this Tamron did delay significantly the planned acquisition of an FX-3, but hey, I'll be making money on the way and get it definitely faster. Btw, thank you for that other video on the Tamron app to configure the custom buttons on this lens..

As a self portrait shooter this lens (when I can find one) will change my life! I have the trio now, and an 85 1.4. I’ll be happy to have just 2 lenses to lug around in nature. I rarely take the 28-75 off because it’s a pain to switch lenses and compositions - so mostly the other lenses sit in my bag. This will open up a whole new world for me!!
    Great review! Ty so much!!

  • @sceneCatgirl
    @sceneCatgirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The fact that now there's a lens that can be paired with the Sony 16-35 gm and the Sigma 150-600 with no gaps or overlap is kind of amazing, and f2 at the wide end is just the icing on the cake. Honestly though the weight is kinda making it hard for me to want to rush out and buy it at the moment though, but if I do start to feel like carrying heavier gear though and want to invest in a high end lens, this will definitely be my go to standard zoom

Personally I’ll go with the new G2 version of the 28-75 because I already own the 70-180 and this is just a bit too pricey and heavy for me, plus it’s nice to get a holy trinity all with the same filter diameter. If I was starting from fresh and didn’t have the 70-180 I think I would buy this one though, perhaps combine it with a 16-35 GM instead of the 17-28 tamron that I currently have.

16-35 and this 35-150 is a dream setup. Throw in the 35 f1.4 GM and 12-24 and I wouldn't need anything else for like all time. Keep in mind with the higher MP A7 cameras, you can set a custom button to Super 35mm mode and then get another 50% zoom out of your lenses. Effectively turning the 35-150 into a 50-225 roughly....amazing.

I'd love to see them update the 17-28 with a 20-35 instead, though. Can you imagine three lenses covering everything from 20-300mm, all with AT LEAST /2.8 and all with USB-C direct input?!

I'm transitioning from µ4/3 to full frame and decided to start with the A7 IV and this lens. As someone who's starting a Sony kit, this lens sounds like a no brainer! I'm probably going to invest in the 16-35 GM to complement the wide end, and a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for portraits. And I'll wait a bit to see if I need anything with more reach for wildlife, but honestly I think I might stop at these 3 lenses!

Seems like the best possible set-up for 3 lenses with portraits/events/everyday shooting! For wildlife check out the Sony 200-600 and the Tamron 150-500. Tamron costs less and would provide an even transition from this lens, but does have 100mm less reach, which I think is a disadvantage.

This lens replaced my RF 70-200 f/2.8 and the camera it mounted to - I switched to Sony specifically for this lens. Canon has shot themselves in the foot as far as I'm concerned, by locking down aftermarket RF glass like they have.
I've mostly been shooting roller derby with it because that's the majority of my photography these days, but I'll also be using it for family sessions, events, martial arts tournaments, etc.
On the a7RIV I got to put it on, even the APS-C mode at 26mp is a step up from the R6's 20, and the crop factor makes this a 52-225. It's a win/win for me.

I've been using Tamron lenses for decades, on my film cameras (Canon) and now on my DSLRs. Same lenses work on both and I've had them for well over 20, probably closer to 30, years. I have 2 18-200s and a 28-270 (I think). I personally love having to carry only one lens to do everything for most of my photography. I have a Sony a7r3 now with lenses that cover 12-400, but it would be great to have this and only carry it. The 12 and 14 are specifically for Milky Way and Aurora, so I don't carry them for other stuff. Now I'm thinking about this one. I'm not sure if I love this review or hate it, if you know what I mean. Thanks. :)

You can tell it's a great lens when you have very few available on the used market. People are holding on to them.
It's a little short for wildlife so I'll probably get the 70-180 for now and a 50-400 or something similar after that. The 35-150 is still a versatile walking around lens so at some point I wouldn't rule it out. I'm new to Sony so I'm carefully acquiring my glass and watching a lot of reviews. Thanks for yours!

Would love to see this lens used in a more active or music video perspective rather than just slow mo shots. Like really dive into its use with movement and performance. Walking shots, talking shots with handheld movement, testing the auto focus and continuous focus. Anyone can make stuff look "cinematic" with slo-mo pans, tripod shots, while using a good color grade. I would say poor video example, but good review overall. However, most people don't use these lenses to just do fully slow motion travel-esque videos. Also, these all-around lenses from tamron have been bought by a lot of small budget freelance directors, so you're missing an entire audience with that one.

Since I have this lens, this is what I have decided. Pairs well with the 20 G or the 16-35 GM and will be replacing the 24-105 G. Will it replace the 24-70 GM - no, I will sometimes want 20 fps with the A1 and I like the smaller and lighter weight for those times that I don't need the 35-150 range. Will it replace the 70-200 GM - no, the GM II will be replacing the old GM. With the 1.4x TC, that gives me 100-280 f/4 which I sometimes require and like the 24-70 GM, sometimes I want the 20 fps. And for those times, I don't need the 16-35 I can pair up the 24-70 GM with the 70-200 GM II.
I am amazed at the quality of images I'm getting out the lens - it is quite stunning for an f/2-f/2.8 zoom. Now if Sony comes out with a 28-70 f/2, well I don't know what I will do. :p

Good review, Dunna! This looks like a beautiful lens and I am excited for the direction that Tamron is going in with their Tamron Utility software but I know that this lens is just too big and heavy for me to consider it. I am going more minimal these days - more fun to carry and more likely for me to shoot more that way, especially on the street.

Had mine for 4 days.. It has now been at Tamron for 10... What NO ONE tests is autofokus when zooming! All tests are made at a fixed focal length and people running in weird patterns.. For action shots that is pretty important it stays on the subject when zooming.. I have NEVER had so many unsharp on my A1.. It's by far worst at the small turn from 150 to 135.. That little turn makes the autofokus jump like crazy.. I had to refocus ALL my shots on a bikerace where my old 85/1.4GM had no problems and my 200-600 also no problems.. If that is normal by Tamron, it's OUT for me.. And I will go for the 70-200(though missing the wide area)

If you shoot landscapes and don't need the wide apertures then just go for the Tamron 28-200 - it is a great lens and will replace the 24-70 and 70-200 to make you bag so much lighter

Although I was unsure about the price of this lens I went ahead and picked it up and can say that it has not let me down. Colors, sharpness, and contrast are pretty incredible on a single lens with this much versatility. Asides from lens flare, the one thing that has disappointed me is that the setting for linear and nonlinear is a global setting. Then again this is more choice that you’ll get with any other lens at this point.

I've been using the A7iii with mostly my old A-mount Zeiss glass, so a timely upgrade to the A7IV plus this lens should be ideal for everyday hybrid shooting.
I can still use the Z 16-35, plus have the 85 1.4 GM for non studio portraits plus the 200-600G for wildlife so fits really well.

If you are earning money shooting events, this lens is one of the best lenses available ant can be the only one. There are not so many cases when I need 24 or 200mm I mean something what I cant achieve with 35 and 150. The only issue I met is autofocus with 7rm3a. It misses a lot. With 7m4 it is excellent, but not with 7rm3a. And also 1100+ gram is significant.

i'm going to order this when i pull more money together, i usually shoot events so i love the minimalism and it fits well with the 17-28 f2.8 i have. i'm going to sell my 85mm f1.8 to pay for it.
That'll leave me with the 17-28 for wide angle work, the zeiss 55mm if i want to travel light and this will be my telephoto without the need to switch lens if i want to go wide, props to tamron for puting this together!
i also think if this was a sony branded lens it would be about $4000

Its a no brainer for me. It replaced my 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses as well as 85 and 135 1.8 lenses. though 1.8 lenses are better for bokeh and low light but I can manage with this as ISO capabilities of these new cameras are way way better. Also post processing is gone so far that handling 3200-6400 ISO is easy.

I just switched to Sony from Panasonic MFT and bought this lens yesterday… biggest downside is weight and length as it’s big for a daily carry, probably not that far off a Sony 70-200mm 2.8 but I have also the new Sony 16-35mm F4 which is ultra light so horses for courses!

Being small and compact has never been an objective of a mirrorless camera. It's just a marketing tactic to fish out DSLR shooters to switch to mirrorless during its early years and I blame Sony for that for which they now abandoned that philosophy on their 4th gen bodies.
Even if you make full-frame camera bodies as compact as a GoPro, the laws of physics still dictates the lens design and it will always be like that until a new and economically viable way to bend light has been invented.
Mirrorless has a much important tech than being compact and those are the ability to see the images you'll shoot real-life, a faster live-view shooting, no more calibration, or even the ability to create a much better lens design due to a smaller flange distance of mirrorless cameras hence the emergence of the f/0.95 lenses and the 35-150mm f/2-2.8
As of now, compactness is the job for small sensor cameras like the fuji X series, Sony's a6000 series, and m4/3rds

I’m somewhere in the middle. I have the Sony 24-105mm F4. I would love the extra range on the long end but I worry about the weight/size increase and the loss of the 24mm length. I shoot some snow sports, outdoor travel and day hiking, and I’m getting into astrophotography. The 35mm F2 seems like a cool addition for astro though. Do you think this would be a good fit? I would likely want to sell my Sony but don’t need to.
