I hope it pushes more lens manufacturers to keep making exotic zoom ranges like this. As good as most lenses are these days, not as much need to upgrade unless they're really special.
And for once it actually has reach! I've heard many times when I have my 24-70/2.8 by bystanders... 'wow that's a nice lens I bet you can shoot really far with that thing'. All because of the size of it!
Thanks for the review. I just got back into photography and I have had this lens for a couple of months now. I replaced a 24-105 f4 lens and I am loving it. The extra reach and faster aperture make a huge difference. I also purchased it to save money buying multiple primes. It is a bigger lens and it does draw attention but it is nice not having to switch lenses to get different shots. My initial thoughts on this lens was “gimmicky” type of lens. It doesn’t know if it wants to be wide angle or telephoto. I will admit after watching your thorough review that my initial opinion has changed. While it’s not the type of lens I would choose for my workflow (corporate video) it is the type of lens I would love more for personal use. For example when I take vacation and traveling to Europe next year. I got caught up just this past weekend and had a use for it. I took a group photo with a beautiful lakefront view in the background, so I pull out my 24-70 and ND filter. Then I wanted to shoot a couple…..hold on and wait while I switch to my 85mm F/1.4. Then one of the subjects wanted to capture a group photo of me and my family with my camera and I had no time to switch back to the 24-70, so she wound up backing up another 12 feet to get us all in the frame. This is a lens that solves the problem of missing the moment changing lenses and carrying an entire backpack of lenses from 16-35mm all the way to 70-200mm. Definitely going to pick this one up. Not for business, but for pleasure.
@@ChrisHagan Bro….your talking to a Brotha that is accustomed to using a double camera strap on my back with two full frame camera bodies (with battery grips) having a first Gen GM a 24-70mm F/2.8 and the first Gen GM 70-200mm F/2.8 for 10 hours on weddings and at least 4 hours for event photography. I go to the gym , push and pull heavy weights and cover 25- 30 miles weekly in cardio, all just to make certain that anything they throw at me is easy for whatever job I can handle. I charge them a lot…..I won’t let them break me.I I appreciate the warning, but rather than carrying a camera bag full of full frame lenses……..Brotha, I will be happy to carry this one piece of glass (regardless of its size) all day in Cancun and Italy, Greece, Turkey and Israel just for pleasure. 😂😂😂
This is absolutely the best lens I own. I also have the Tamron 20-40mm f 2.8 (not expensive and sharp) and carry only both of these 2 lens when travelling overseas. The image quality of both lens are amazing. The 20-40mm is good for videoing my family and the 35-150 is great for zooming in in theme parks, zoos, etc. I even carry this lens with the Freewell K2 lens filter attached on my backpack strap with Peak design capture clip and it is not too bulky.
Really informative and well done video. Topics are spot on. Just got mine. Got rid of my 1) Tamron 70-180 f2.8 & 2) Sony 35 f1.4 GM. Keeping my Tamron 17-28 F2.8 for ultra wide. I loved the 35 1.4 GM, but also never shot too much wide open. It was nice to have, but F2 at 35m is good enough for me. Just tired of switching lenses. Thanks!
It's one of those lenses that I feel like you have to use to really appreciate the versatility. I'm holding on to the 35 GM because it's easier to balance on a gimbal, but yeah, the results from the Tamron at f2 are spectacular.
Very honest review with good input for me. Thank you so much. I used the Tamron for 5 month now and I like it pretty much. I just got the 70-200 GM2 for a try at home. Oh man, the Bokeh of the Sony is so good. Sharpness is allaround visibly better in the Sony. Pictures out of the GM have a nice touch, which make them stand out from the ones I did with the Tamron. I am torn, I like the pictures out of the Sony more. But that flexibily between 35-70mm is missing which is so nice when you travel with one lens. Hard decision since I have a Leica q2 with 28mm to use on the wider end :)
I hear you. The Sony 70-200 leaves me loving it every time I've rented. Zero complaints. But would probably still be a need to change lenses if you're shooting an event indoors or something that you want to go wide with. The Tamron currently sits alone in being able to cover such a range. It's such a hard decision between the two for a lot of people I think.

I bought it months ago, no regrets. It's a bit heavier than Sigma 24-70mm (sold by now), but I didn't care. I would suggest renting it first and using it in a real work scenario before committing.
@Chris Hagan a few times in the wide angle end, but I used to miss the telephoto ALL THE TIME with the Sigma. I was considering buying the 70-200 f4. I'm glad I waited. When working, I just move farther or ask my subjects to move a bit.

Hey Chris. Thank you so much for putting up your real world experience to understand the lens practicality. I’m seriously tending towards this lens for my travel and street photography. I recently purchased this lens to see if it would be practical enough for my use cases especially considering its weight. While I feel the weight is not so drastically different from Sony 70-200 GM II or even the Sigma 24-70 f2.8, I feel it is still very much noticeable for everyday photography. Nevertheless, your video helped me to understand some real world scenarios for my much awaited decision. I’m still undecided whether to return or keep it as I seriously love its image quality and flexibility with just a single lens instead of two 24-70 and 70-200. But I’m also thinking towards how practical it is to carry the continuous weight instead of using a lighter 24-70 for 70% of the time and 70-200 for the remaining 30% time during my travels 🤔 Nonetheless, keep up the great work!
whenever i see someone with a 70-200 nikon or something similar i really dont envy them even though this lens is big, its not THAT big. yet im in a happy medium between 24-70 and 70-200; tho i do own the 24-70 f4 just in case i really need the wider angle indoors (with flash light of course) otherwise i'd value the aperture more most of the time. im planning to get rid of the 24-70 f4 and get 16-28 sigma soon. will be a better complimentary lens
I intend to purchase the original DSLR Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-F4 lens in both Nikon and Canon mounts for the Nikon D5500 and Canon 80D respectively. And once I purchase both the Sony A74 and Nikon Z5 Mark 1 or the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2 I intend to purchase the Mirroless Tamron 35-150mm F2-F2.8.
Believe it or not, I waited a year before I took this lens out of the box but once I did, it was hard to put it down. The size of this lens draws lots of attention when traveling so be careful and make sure you have an Apple AirTag or some other tracking device in your camera bag.
Informative video. I appreciate the perspective. However, I think I’d actually prefer a wider side of the lens over the longer. Hence, I’d take a 20-65mm 2.8 in a heartbeat. When I’m shooting indoors, the ability to go wider is crucial. 35mm is amazing, but having the ability to shoot 20mm is priceless.
That new 20-70 that Sony made would've been tough to turn down if it were a 2.8 instead of f/4. But I did see a rumor that Tamron is working on a 20-50 f/2. We have so many 24-70s, maybe they start making more on the wider end.

Thanks! Trying to get there one day. Looking at the big picture, I lean toward Sony because of the 3rd party lens options from Tamron and Sigma. So many good ones to choose from. A7 IV is a great place to start if it works for your budget. If Sony releases an A7C II, would also be a good one.
Hi Chris I like your 5 questions you asked. I like that 35mm -150 range, I am just not a big fan of the size and weight. I am coming from M43 (GH5), now I am Sony (A1 & A7Siii) and I know if a lens is big or too big for me I will not take it out with me for different reasons. I really like my 35mm f/1.4 GM, waiting for the 50mm f.1.4 GM. Could have had the 50mm f/1.2 GM that bigger size and 262 more grams in weight kept me away from that lens but inside I will use my good friend lens (I have gone APSC on the 35mm) Strangely enough I would get the 70mm - 200 f/2.8 GM (II) I do think though I would not be always taking that around with me b/c of the size. Size being smaller is important to me but that is my thing. ...I have zero issue moving my legs with prime lenses. I really liked your review, you did in my view simply an outstanding job from start to finish! The crazy part is however good you currently are as long as you stay with this you will only keep improving, exciting! I really appreciate your speaking style. Not once did I ever hear anything that made me think when you were saying, “a matter of fact,” your talking allows space for people to have their own views while you inform, educate and entertain. Thank you! Definitely took some time but it was fun. Figured if I was going to rent it to see what I liked and didn't, might as well share my results for others. I had a similar path. Shot GH5 before switching to Sony full frame. The 35 GM is perfect for everyday walking around and usually is the one lens I'd take anywhere I want to keep it simple. I've never owned a 50mm but use the old Sigma 50 for most interviews at work. Definitely interested in the new 50 GM, but it's not quite a need yet. But the 35-150, like others have said, just nothing quite like it. Thanks for watching!

yes, it can replace 24-70 2.8 esp. if you 24mm prime . And yes , walking around Sayulita with such a huge lens, mehhh) I would use lens like this only in working scenarios. Nice review!
I had my first video shoot with this lens yesterday and loved it. I almost bought a 70-200 but I don't do a ton of telephoto stuff, so I was concerned that the 70-200 would collect dust, but this is very versatile! I A/B'd them in store, and the the 35-50 feels like a bigger range, which maybe sounds strange but you have to try it. I'm considering getting a second camera body for my primes and "gluing" this lens to camera.
Nice video. Was really considering this lens for a while to perhaps replace a few primes. What bugged me however was that it was external zooming so only a matter of time until it gets dust in. Also, when you are comparing size, you are showing it with barrel inside, and not fully extended. =)
Really great review. This just confirmed it's my next purchase. Do you think it would be better with a lens collar? It's a similar weight to the Tamron 50-400 and that has one. A little concerned it might put too much pressure on the body when extended on a tripod.
I do think it would be better with a collar. But I have used it for wedding ceremonies (30ish minutes or so) on a tripod on my A7 IV without a collar though. No issues doing so.

On a A7RV it is 61MP 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 on full frame mode and in 26MP (apparently sharper/more detail than A7IV at 33MP) APS-C mode it's a 52.5-225mm f/2.0-2.8 lens. A 35-225mm f/2.0-2.8 lens with 8 stop IBIS.... what's not to like!
@@-MrEVIL- so you are thinking if a photo taken at 61 megapixel in full frame at f/2.8 focused at the center of the frame than crop it down to 26 megapixel in the centre of the frame the image depth automatically turns into f/4.2 like shooting with an APS-C sensor? Does that happens to your images ?
@@Jeo-What kind of, using center of your ff sensor is basically the same as using a whole crop sensor, and in that case the aperture is multiplied alongside the focal length
@@-MrEVIL- First, do that to a photo you have taken at shallow depth like f/1.2~2.0 with your full frame camera and crop it down as much a you like and le me know if the depth has changed on the image or... it's just what you had been told to believe.
If you are out there with a a6100 and a tamron 17-70 2.8,...you get the same exact attention than your FF with this tamron, so,..yeah you are right, just embrace it,...I'm getting this lens, maybe this friday....it depend what sigma will show, if another 70200...tamy, if they surprise us with a 35-150 competition, or ...an unicorn 24-105 2.8, well, will think about...
Nice review. Always wondered about at 150mm with no image stabilization is like. The size is not a big thing but the main negative is no tripod mount/foot. Way to large of a lens to not have one. I usually use the tripod mount to trap my 70-200 for my camera strap.
I actually prefer the Tamron 28-200 as the most versatile all around lens. Optically it is magnificent, and in this age of acceptable high ISO the 2/2.8 is less of a have to have feature. And it is really light too
Honestly that's one thing I could've added to the review. A lot of what I export for work / social is at 1080. So I don't mind cropping in on the image if I absolutely must. But with the 35-150 I was able to get the desired framing in camera on just about everything.
@@ChrisHagan Even if the original video is 1080p, exporting it in 4K helps a lot on TH-cam. 1080p looks great on PC until TH-cam degrades it to oblivion.
As long as you don't mind the size, Tamron 35-150. It can be the one lens you need to cover a variety of situations. If you found yourself needing something wider down the road, Tamron 17-28 would pair nicely with it.
All good points! I’m a new Sony A7R5 owner with the 14/1.8GM and 40/2.5G primes. This lens looks like a great addition as a travel set up, but you made a great point about size - I’m going to travel in Asia and Europe where I might struggle with carrying a big lens around for all day / candid street photos lol From an image quality only perspective, can you describe any differences with the way this lens renders colours / contrasts compared to a typical Sony 24-70/2.8GM2 and 70-200/2.8GM2? Yes. All footage handheld with active steady shot. I think one or two of the golf cart shofs are the only ones where I lightly used Premiere's warp stabilizer.
Hi Chris. I’m still learning and looking at a Sony A7IV. I’ve been thinking about investing in one good all around like this. I like to shoot all kinds of things. Street photography to events and just for fun. Would I benefit from getting two lenses like the 28x200 and a17x28 as I’m learning? If I did get this 35-150, what would you recommend just for a simpler all around for a weekend trip that’s smaller.
Hi! In my opinion, I'd start with one lens like a Sigma 24-70 or Tamron 28-75. They're both really good versatile lenses that you'll probably find yourself using a lot, even as your lens arsenal grows. After that, then you can decide whether you need something like a Tamron 17-28, 70-180 or 35-150. It's a good idea to get a feel for how you like to shoot before jumping in with multiple lenses. If you find yourself wanting to go wider, a 17-28 would be great. But if you find yourself not needing to go wider than 28 and often in need of something longer than 75, then consider the 35-150 or 70-180. Even though the range is a bit redundant, if you aren't going to shoot ultra wide, a 24-70 or 28-75 would be a great weekend travel lens if you want to leave the big 35-150 at home.

It turns the same way as Sony zooms. Twisting clockwise extends the barrel. But this is the opposite of the Sigma 24-70 DG DN so my own muscle memory was fully tested lol
Saw a rumor that they're doing something "different" with a 70-200. So I'm intrigued. In a year there will probably be more choices than we know what to do with.
I haven’t done astro, but from what I’ve seen, you’d probably want a bit wider and brighter. Sony’s 20mm f/1.8 is great. And you’d get more use out of it than just astro. Sigma also has some wide, bright options that are solid.
I’ve been shooting professionally since the 80s. This is the best zoom lens I’ve ever owned.

And once I purchase both the Sony A74 and Nikon Z5 Mark 1 or the future Nikon Z5 Mark 2 I intend to purchase the Mirroless Tamron 35-150mm F2-F2.8.
Believe it or not, I waited a year before I took this lens out of the box but once I did, it was hard to put it down. The size of this lens draws lots of attention when traveling so be careful and make sure you have an Apple AirTag or some other tracking device in your camera bag.

Informative video. I appreciate the perspective. However, I think I’d actually prefer a wider side of the lens over the longer. Hence, I’d take a 20-65mm 2.8 in a heartbeat. When I’m shooting indoors, the ability to go wider is crucial. 35mm is amazing, but having the ability to shoot 20mm is priceless.
That new 20-70 that Sony made would've been tough to turn down if it were a 2.8 instead of f/4. But I did see a rumor that Tamron is working on a 20-50 f/2. We have so many 24-70s, maybe they start making more on the wider end.

Thanks! Trying to get there one day. Looking at the big picture, I lean toward Sony because of the 3rd party lens options from Tamron and Sigma. So many good ones to choose from. A7 IV is a great place to start if it works for your budget. If Sony releases an A7C II, would also be a good one.

Hi Chris I like your 5 questions you asked. I like that 35mm -150 range, I am just not a big fan of the size and weight. I am coming from M43 (GH5), now I am Sony (A1 & A7Siii) and I know if a lens is big or too big for me I will not take it out with me for different reasons. I really like my 35mm f/1.4 GM, waiting for the 50mm f.1.4 GM. Could have had the 50mm f/1.2 GM that bigger size and 262 more grams in weight kept me away from that lens but inside I will use my good friend lens (I have gone APSC on the 35mm)
Strangely enough I would get the 70mm - 200 f/2.8 GM (II) I do think though I would not be always taking that around with me b/c of the size.
Size being smaller is important to me but that is my thing. ...I have zero issue moving my legs with prime lenses.

I had a similar path. Shot GH5 before switching to Sony full frame. The 35 GM is perfect for everyday walking around and usually is the one lens I'd take anywhere I want to keep it simple. I've never owned a 50mm but use the old Sigma 50 for most interviews at work. Definitely interested in the new 50 GM, but it's not quite a need yet. But the 35-150, like others have said, just nothing quite like it.

Great video! Been thinking about replacing my Sony F4 70-105 for a lower f stop lens with the same reach but had all the concerns you addressed. Can’t ever imagine forgoing the Sony 35mm GM though, it’s gives crazy delicious images. Worth losing the reach for:)

yes, it can replace 24-70 2.8 esp. if you 24mm prime . And yes , walking around Sayulita with such a huge lens, mehhh) I would use lens like this only in working scenarios. Nice review!

I had my first video shoot with this lens yesterday and loved it. I almost bought a 70-200 but I don't do a ton of telephoto stuff, so I was concerned that the 70-200 would collect dust, but this is very versatile! I A/B'd them in store, and the the 35-50 feels like a bigger range, which maybe sounds strange but you have to try it. I'm considering getting a second camera body for my primes and "gluing" this lens to camera.
Yep. The wide end is where the biggest changes are made in terms of field of view. It's on my A-cam all day now for wedding video.
Nice video. Was really considering this lens for a while to perhaps replace a few primes. What bugged me however was that it was external zooming so only a matter of time until it gets dust in. Also, when you are comparing size, you are showing it with barrel inside, and not fully extended. =)
Really great review. This just confirmed it's my next purchase. Do you think it would be better with a lens collar? It's a similar weight to the Tamron 50-400 and that has one. A little concerned it might put too much pressure on the body when extended on a tripod.
I do think it would be better with a collar. But I have used it for wedding ceremonies (30ish minutes or so) on a tripod on my A7 IV without a collar though. No issues doing so.

I shot with LUMIX S5 II, I run Native and adapt Canon Lenses but I need to see if I should adapt Sony Glass.
On a A7RV it is 61MP 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 on full frame mode and in 26MP (apparently sharper/more detail than A7IV at 33MP) APS-C mode it's a 52.5-225mm f/2.0-2.8 lens. A 35-225mm f/2.0-2.8 lens with 8 stop IBIS.... what's not to like!

@@-MrEVIL- so you are thinking if a photo taken at 61 megapixel in full frame at f/2.8 focused at the center of the frame than crop it down to 26 megapixel in the centre of the frame the image depth automatically turns into f/4.2 like shooting with an APS-C sensor? Does that happens to your images ?
@@Jeo-What kind of, using center of your ff sensor is basically the same as using a whole crop sensor, and in that case the aperture is multiplied alongside the focal length
@@-MrEVIL- First, do that to a photo you have taken at shallow depth like f/1.2~2.0 with your full frame camera and crop it down as much a you like and le me know if the depth has changed on the image or... it's just what you had been told to believe.

Sounds like they have something cooking in that department. Their other telephoto zooms get pretty good reviews. Haven't used one for myself though.
Nice review. Always wondered about at 150mm with no image stabilization is like.
The size is not a big thing but the main negative is no tripod mount/foot. Way to large of a lens to not have one. I usually use the tripod mount to trap my 70-200 for my camera strap.

I actually prefer the Tamron 28-200 as the most versatile all around lens. Optically it is magnificent, and in this age of acceptable high ISO the 2/2.8 is less of a have to have feature. And it is really light too
I've heard a lot of good things but haven't tried it yet. Would like to though. That's a great range.

Honestly that's one thing I could've added to the review. A lot of what I export for work / social is at 1080. So I don't mind cropping in on the image if I absolutely must. But with the 35-150 I was able to get the desired framing in camera on just about everything.
@@ChrisHagan Even if the original video is 1080p, exporting it in 4K helps a lot on TH-cam. 1080p looks great on PC until TH-cam degrades it to oblivion.

As long as you don't mind the size, Tamron 35-150. It can be the one lens you need to cover a variety of situations.
If you found yourself needing something wider down the road, Tamron 17-28 would pair nicely with it.
All good points! I’m a new Sony A7R5 owner with the 14/1.8GM and 40/2.5G primes. This lens looks like a great addition as a travel set up, but you made a great point about size - I’m going to travel in Asia and Europe where I might struggle with carrying a big lens around for all day / candid street photos lol
From an image quality only perspective, can you describe any differences with the way this lens renders colours / contrasts compared to a typical Sony 24-70/2.8GM2 and 70-200/2.8GM2? Thanks

Yes. All footage handheld with active steady shot. I think one or two of the golf cart shofs are the only ones where I lightly used Premiere's warp stabilizer.

Hi Chris. I’m still learning and looking at a Sony A7IV. I’ve been thinking about investing in one good all around like this. I like to shoot all kinds of things. Street photography to events and just for fun. Would I benefit from getting two lenses like the 28x200 and a17x28 as I’m learning? If I did get this 35-150, what would you recommend just for a simpler all around for a weekend trip that’s smaller.
Hi! In my opinion, I'd start with one lens like a Sigma 24-70 or Tamron 28-75. They're both really good versatile lenses that you'll probably find yourself using a lot, even as your lens arsenal grows.
After that, then you can decide whether you need something like a Tamron 17-28, 70-180 or 35-150. It's a good idea to get a feel for how you like to shoot before jumping in with multiple lenses. If you find yourself wanting to go wider, a 17-28 would be great. But if you find yourself not needing to go wider than 28 and often in need of something longer than 75, then consider the 35-150 or 70-180.
Even though the range is a bit redundant, if you aren't going to shoot ultra wide, a 24-70 or 28-75 would be a great weekend travel lens if you want to leave the big 35-150 at home.

Does is zoom/turn “backwards” like other Tamrons on Canon Mount?
It turns the same way as Sony zooms. Twisting clockwise extends the barrel. But this is the opposite of the Sigma 24-70 DG DN so my own muscle memory was fully tested lol

Would this Tamron 35-150 lens be good for astrophotography?
I haven’t done astro, but from what I’ve seen, you’d probably want a bit wider and brighter. Sony’s 20mm f/1.8 is great. And you’d get more use out of it than just astro. Sigma also has some wide, bright options that are solid.
