    "I'm afraid to commit..."
Yeah, no kidding... that HURTS, when it rips it out of your hand... My lawnmower did that once... Sheared the key off, it was out of time. When that thing kicks, and rips the handle out of your hand... Ouch. My hand was buzzing for a couple weeks... Very unpleasant...
To this day, when I grab a pull start thing, I remember that, and I think "please don't rip the rope out of my hand...."
    Fun video. Nice job.

Get rid of the T handle and get a ... cane handle (L shaped) pull start replacement. That way, it just slips out of your hand. That or just hold one of the two arms of the T handle, as opposed to crossing it between your fingers.

Glad to watch. when I was a teenager, my family bought old cars and we rebuilt the eng. Not fix, rebuilt. We replaced rings and bearings. and put back together ( old 6 cyl. and v8 - mostly ford ). As adult - just brakes, starters, altenators, etc. It makes me feel young to see you working on the engines. Most enjoyable - thank you.

Mustie1, This is one of THE helpful videos I have come to find. I'm running a professional pressure washing company and the pressure washer was having the same issue. The pull start was ripping out so hard it was recoiling and breaking the rope several times. I thought it was weak rope or the pull start assembly was broken. So I replaced and still it was happening. I had no way of know what to do but this video was clear and to the point. Today, I did the same, valve clearance adjustment, and cleaned and adjusted the magnet. It worked! No pull start issues. One of the best videos I have used for the company. Thank you.

Hi Mustie1, The one thing I thought I would mention regarding the engine dying after 10-15 mins of use can sometimes be caused by a faulty fuel tank vent causing the fuel tank to build up a vacuum while the engine is consuming fuel. Great video btw. Cheers

Two comments. On Briggs coils, the coil has "engine side" to get the install correct. Also the green gas goblins and water love to hang out in the fuel shut off,
So the coil problem got the owner a complete engine tune and all Mustie fans a complete troubleshoot tree on running issues of the Honda. Fantastic.

I never liked the term "technician" every job under the sun is some kind of "technician" but only certain jobs have been historically important enough to end up with it's own term. No one says law technician its lawyer. No one says medical diagnosis technician its doctor. The same goes for mechanic, the term technician devalues the importance of a mechanic.

One thing that wasn’t covered on the fuel side was to check the fuel bowl retaining bolt, it could’ve had blocked passage, sometimes it’s the issue on no fuel since its the lowest point in the bowl, and dirt will settle there after sitting for long periods of time then when started it gets sucked in the ports. This was an excellent video, thanks for sharing.

When I was a kid back in the 1970's .I'd go digging through the scrap piles and find old junk lawnmower engines for my homemade go carts ..bring the engines home and try to get them running ....My Dad was an Old Us Army Veteran .when he came back home from the Army in the 1950's .he went into the Pennsyvania coalmines and a Mine Mechanic..there were no jobs for Veterans back then so they took what they could get ...My Dad was Creative ..if Dad needed a part and couldn't get one he made one ha ha ..I miss those old timers ...when I had a lawnmower engine that had a sheared off flywheel key .My Dad would cut one out of a plate of steel .stick the homemade steel key in his bench vise and with his file he would file it down till it fit perfectly ...Dad always said .you wouldn't want to use this steel key if you were still using the engine on a lawnmower. But on a go cart I dont see a problem with using steel for the key ..Dad fixed many engines for me and they ran great for what I needed them for ......We lived way out in the country back then and would have to drive many hours to get to the city to find mower part so Dad made what we needed ....The Days of the Old timers are gone ..everything can be bought on the internet today

I've watched many small engine mechanic videos, Probably in the hundreds. And this video demonstrates musty at his very best. I don't know any small engine mechanic. That has the troubleshooting and diagnostic skills along with the practical knowledge of musty. Great job! 👍👍👍 By the way as soon as I saw the problems I said To myself, it's either the valve timing or the magnito.

Malcolm Rowe @DannMarceau Indeed! This is one of the reasons I kept watching and subscribed to Mustie1’s channel early on. He troubleshoots the way most of us with less experience would encounter issues in real life. Most of us now know you check for spark, check the fuel, check the carb etc. But if you overlook something or don’t see it act up the first time around, now what? Darren shows us. There’s no shame in it, we just want to fix whatever is the cause and carry on. That’s real life and really useful education. Best content of its genre on the web. I enjoy many others, but I always check Mustie1 first. He’s made me a better “in-house handy man”.

I think that's part of why I enjoy his channel so much when something doesn't work it's like a joke between him and whatever he's working on. I know TH-cam demotes your channel if you use foul language but I honestly get the impression that is just who he is and I particularly enjoy it. Gives me power to keep trying to figure out whatever I am working on.

my guy has a gas powered pressure washer that i have broken the rip cord ( as we now call it )so many times it s just a pain in the butt to replace all the time. so i asked if i couldn t just jumper it to get it to run? he came up w/ a socket an extention and a cordless drill that he put the socket on the big bolt head in the center of the motor pulled the trigger and got the motor spinning and quick as a bunny it was running! so now i just start the darn thing like that whenever i use it. it saves so much time and effort since the rip cord doesn t need to be on it now!

Mustie, this video is awesome. taught me tons. Got may hands on an old craftsman rototiller, crank case and fuel take full of water and piston stuck. Tore it down, new carb and got the thing to run( one of those briggs carbs with too damn much linkage). Ran a few minutes then quit...would not restart. Got fed up...then watched this video. I remembered during my attempts to restart the tiller the pull cord would jerk from my hand. Aha, mustie says timing issue. Checked fly wheel key and coil gap. Viola, set the gap at 12 thou and the booger started on 3rd pull, purring like it oughta. Thx bro. I am hooked on your video lessons.

When taking out the little pin that keeps the float in place, notice it does not have to click into place, because it is long enough that if it vibrates all the way One Direction or the other it will hit the side of the bowl, and because it’s long enough it will never fall out.

I really appreciate your knowledge, presentation style, and your channel.
I am completing the rebuild of an Ex-cell pressure washer. It has a Honda GX390 engine and an Annovi Reverberi RKV-4G32 pump.
    Regarding the pump:
I replaced pistons, spacers, piston o-rings and nuts, check valves, and unloader o-rings. I had problems with the unloader, the spring was missing. The shaft keyway was also broken, suggesting the pump became difficult to spin. I put a spacer and a shorter main valve spring in the unloader because this unloader and spring are obsolete, and I cannot find a new or used one.
The unloader fastening bolts are hollow tubes that bolt in to the manifold. One is 1/2" low pressure side, and 3/8" on high pressure side. These original bolts are steel and extremely corroded. I replaced them with a set of brass ones. I replaced the o-rings on these tubular bolts. I replaced the keyway key.
I hooked up the water supply and the unloader leaked at the new tubular mounting bolts. I had crushed the o-ring. It must have slipped out during reassembly.
Replaced it. No more leaks. The engine ran for about 5 seconds, then bogged down. The pressure gun trigger was stuck. I pulled very hard on the trigger and water shot out like a rocket.
It seems I have too much pressure building up internally. I am researching this problem. I suspect the unloader that was missing a spring may be part of the problem, but not sure.
What else can raise the pressure inside the pump? Can the two tubular bolts mounting the unloader be the problem? The 1/2" tubular bolt mounts the low pressure inlet side. The 3/8" bolt mounts the unloader to the high pressure outlet side. These tubular mounting bolts do have orifices.
The motor is a Honda GX390. The pump is an Annovi Reverberi RKV4G32. All pump parts are AR parts specified in AR parts breakdown for the pump. The two tubular unloader mounting bolts (Part# AR2121 are"brass"). The original ones were carbon steel. I can't find a reason for this difference, except the brass ones look like a newer design and since they are brass, they should not corrode like the steel ones. The unloader is a VR 3/B.
Can you enlighten me about what can make the pressure increase to the point the motor bogs down like this?

  • @larryfine4498
    @larryfine4498 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thought I would share my kickback story as it may help others with the same issue. When magnets, valve timing, points, coils and all the other issues are not your problem, run a compression test. Had a Tecumseh LEV120, L head lawn mower. Mower pull start kicked back violently when plug wire was connected. Appeared to have decent compression. After chasing all of the usual gremlins, I decided to run a compression test. 25 PSI max (way to low). Next, I did an leak down test. It immediately failed. I could hear the air blowing out the crankcase vent and in to the intake manifold. Engine had a cracked compression ring. My conclusion; during the combustion stroke, the intense pressure leaked by the piston, pressurizing the crankcase, forcing the piston to reverse direction abruptly. My customer chose not to repair the engine as it was 18+ years old.

Just wanted to say thanks. My pressure washer kicked the bucket back in May and I didn't have the chance to take a good look at why it stopped working until recently. At first I thought it was the carb. Cleaned it out (there was junk in the bowl so I thought that was it at first). Put it back together, tried to start it, and it pulled the starter cord out of my hand (and felt like it almost broke my arm in the process too. :/ ). I didn't have much time to get into the guts of the thing so I put it away until I had more time.
I saw this video back on the 5th when you published it. I hadn't touched the coil but you gave me an idea of what could have been wrong. This past weekend I pulled off the flywheel and sure enough, the key that keeps the flywheel in sync with the crank had sheared and the two were now out of phase by about 90 degrees. Of course nobody in my area carries the specific size of key the engine uses so I had to order it. No biggie, two days and five bucks later I had three of 'em. Put the flywheel back on, slid the pin in, put the thing back together, and gave it a pull. She fired right up on the first try! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
